Florence A. (Bautsch) Pohrman
PORTLAND, Ore. - Florence Pohrman, 72, of Portland, formerly of La Crosse, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997.
The daughter of Gustave and Mabel (St. Jacque) Bautsch was born Sept. 23, 1925 in La Crosse. She graduated from Aquinas High School. On May 4, 1944 she married Wesley (Lad) Pohrman, moving to Portland where she resided thereafter.
She is survived by two children, Teri of Napa, Calif., and Tina (Jane) Sommers; two granddaughters, Courtney and Jessica of Eugene, Ore.; a sister, Ruth Eide; three brothers, George and William (Evelyn) Bautsch, both of La Crosse, Gustave (Faye) Bautsch of Wausau, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two infant sons and one brother.
Funeral services are Monday and interment at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Portland.

Macel I. Croninger
GAYS MILLS/VIOLA, Wis. - Macel I. Croninger, 87, of Gays Mills and formerly of Viola, Wis., died Saturday, December 27, 1997 at the Sannes Skogdalen Nursing Home, Soldiers Grove, Wis.
She was born near Viola October 17, 1910 to Pearl and Cora (Fruit) Drake. She married Orie Croninger on March 19, 1934, he preceded her in death on March 1, 1986.
She is survived by her daughter, Lois A. (Pat) McGinley, Gays Mills; four grandchildren, Kevin (Joleen) McGinley, Madison, Wis., Maureen (Mike) Speck, Plain, Wis., Patrick McGinley, Waunakee, Wis., and Gregory McGinley, Portage, Wis.; seven great-grandchildren, Amanda McGinley, Sean McGinley, Andon McGinley, Eryn McGinley, Matthew Speck, Meghan Speck, and Michele Speck; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred Kanable and Hazel Clark; and a brother, Delburn V. Drake.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 30, 1997 at the Gays Mills Congregational Church. Greg Smiley will officiate. Burial will be in the Viola Cemetery. Friends may call at the Dommersnaes Bertram Family Funeral Home, Gays Mills, on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.

Shirley J. Zimmerman
TOMAH, Wis. - Shirley J. Zimmerman, 72, of Tomah, died Friday, Dec. 26, 1997 in Elk River, Minn. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church, Tomah. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Tomah. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home, Tomah; and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

Catherine J. Bakalars
Catherine J. Bakalars, 88, of La Crosse, died at the home of her daughter in Fridley, Minn., on Saturday, December 27, 1997.
She was born on March 10, 1909, in Marathon, Wis., to George and Anna Hoffman. She married George Yost. He died in 1956. On September 22, 1962, she married Frank J. Bakalars, Sr.
In addition to her husband, Frank, she is survived by three daughters, Delores ``Lori'' (Rolv) Slungaard of La Crosse, Therese (Norman) Bruseth of Sussex, Wis., and Rita (Joseph) Hoesley of Fridley, Minn.; a son, Richard (Mary Lois) Yost of Tyler, Texas; two stepdaughters, Marie (Ray) Smith of La Crosse and Janice Brown of Irvine, Calif.; two stepsons, Frank (Sandy) Bakalars, Jr., of Stoddard, Wis., and Marvin Bakalars of La Crosse; 24 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. In addition to her first husband, George, she was preceded in death by two sisters, ten brothers and a stepdaughter.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 1997, at St. Pius X Catholic Church. The Rev. Joseph Rafacz will officiate. Burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and again on Wednesday from 9:30 to 10 a.m. A rosary will be recited at the funeral home on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Helen E. Stephan
TREMPEALEAU, Wis. - Helen E. Stephan, age 89, of Trempealeau, died Saturday, December 27, 1997, at St. Francis Nursing Home in La Crosse, Wis.
She was born March 14, 1908, to Carl and Louise (Gizegorzewska) Kunda in Winona, Minn. She attended area schools.
On May 2, 1934, Helen married Byron Stephan in Winona, Minn. She was deputy Treasurer for the village of Trempealeau for a number of years.
She was a member of St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church and its Altar Society.
She is survived by her husband, Byron; one son, Carl (Joanne) of St. Paul, Minn.; three grandchildren, Kathleen of St. Paul, Minn., Mark (Faith) of Sacramento, Calif., and Jeanne Kiel of Stillwater, Minn.; two sisters, Delores (Orvin) Wamhoff, Couerdalene, Idaho, and Dorothy (Lawerence) Mumey of Hazel Park, Mich.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Sally Koba; a brother-in-law, Edward Koba; and three brothers, Joseph, John and Frank.,
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 31, 1997, at St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church in Trempealeau. Father Robert Wagner will officiate. Burial will be at a later date. She was cremated.
Smith Mortuary in Galesville assisted the family with arrangements.

Dorothy K. Mercer
PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. - Dorothy K. Mercer, 84, of Prairie du Chien, Wis., died Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. John's Catholic Church and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien.
Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at the Garrity Funeral Home, Prairie du Chien, where there will be a rosary at 5 p.m. and a wake scripture at 7:30 p.m.

Dorothy Lillian DeBow Lee
SPARTA, Wis. - Dorothy Lillian DeBow Lee, 93, of Sparta, Wis., died early Saturday morning, Dec. 27, 1997, at the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Nursing Home, Sparta.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Facility Chapel on the second floor. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Sparta.
Friends may call at the Page-Smith Funeral Home, Sparta, on Monday from 6:30 to 8 p.m.; and at the hospital chapel from noon until the service on Tuesday.

Norbert J. Hammes
Norbert J. Hammes, 86, of La Crosse died on Sunday, December 28, 1997, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center.
He was born on June 18, 1911, in La Crosse to John and Rose (Kroeger) Hammes. He married Marie B. Baumgartner on May 7, 1935, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Hokah, Minn. He was a longtime employee of the Dolly Madison Dairys of La Crosse.
Norbert is survived by his wife, Marie; two daughters, Mary (Gene) Ostrem of Sparta, Wis., and Jean (Jerry) Pierce of Great Falls, Montana; six sons, Norbert (Nancy) of Marquette, Iowa, Jerry (Phillis) of Rochester, Minn., Donald (Lorraine) of La Crosse, Leonard (Carol) of Lakeland, Fla., Michael (Sandy) of Onalaska, Wis., and James (Jamie) of Edgerton, Kan.; 24 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a grandson, two great-grandsons; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Hammes; and four sisters and two brothers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 1997, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. The Rev. Lawrence B. Berger will officiate. Burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service. A rosary will be recited at the funeral home on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

Florence L. Neumann
Florence L. Neumann, 73, of La Crosse, died in her home on Friday, December 26, 1997.
She was born on March 13, 1924 in Caledonia, Minn. to Peter and Ella (Meyer) Twite. Florence married Edwin Neumann on October 6, 1943 in Caledonia, Minn. He died on March 16, 1989.
Florence is survived by a daughter, Betty (Duane) Meyer of Holmen, Wis.; six sons, Roger (Kathy) of Rochester, Minn., Darrell (Vickie) of Westby, Wis., Glenn (Judy) of DeKalb, Ill., and Kermit (Raven), David (Elaine) and Larry, all of La Crosse; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; three sisters, Helen St. Mary, Alice (Harold) Heaney and Evelyn Anderson of Caledonia, Minn.; and a brother, LaVern (Annette) Twite of Houston, Minn. In addition to her husband, Edwin, she was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, December 30, 1997 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church. Rev. Steven Staude will officiate. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.

Willis L. Ghelf
STODDARD/DE SOTO, Wis. - Willis L. Ghelf, age 80, of 350 Elm Street in Stoddard and formerly of rural De Soto, died on Monday morning, December 29, 1997 at her apartment. She was born at La Farge on August 15, 1917 to Thomas and Katherine (Melvin) Mills. On June 27, 1936 she married Francis A. Ghelf at Waukon, Iowa. They farmed for forty years in the town of Wheatland, rural De Soto, in Vernon County. Mr. Ghelf died in August, 1991. In the fall of 1992 she moved to Stoddard. She also had worked as a cook for the De Soto Area Schools and at Northern Engraving in La Crosse. She was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in Genoa; Valley View Homemakers; had been a leader in the Redmound Strivers 4-H Club; and for several years had taught Sunday school at the Redmound Methodist Church.
She is survived by one son, Loren (Jean) Ghelf of Genoa; one daughter, Debra Wickham of Ferryville; one daughter-in-law, Mary Ghelf of Genoa; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Scott (Thelma) Mills and Charles (Betty) Mills, both of Viroqua; one sister-in-law, Hazel Mills of Viroqua; two special friends, Jeanette Smith of Geona and Dorothy Huntington of Stoddard; other relatives; and many friends. She was also preceded in death by three sons, Tom in 1964, Ronald in 1987 and Wayne in 1991; one brother, George W. Mills; and one sister, Etta Espe.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 2, 1998 at St. Charles Catholic Church in Genoa, with Father Larry Dunklee officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday, January 1, 1998 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua, where there will be a prayer service at 4 p.m. Friends may also call at the church after 9:30 a.m. on Friday.
