Martha M. Sonsalla
INDEPENDENCE, Wis. - Martha M. Sonsalla, 95, of Arcadia and formerly of Independence, died Tuesday, July 14, 1998, at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare-Arcadia Nursing Home.
She was born July 29, 1902, in Lewis Valley, Trempealeau County, to William and Barbara (Sluga) Pietrek. She married Luke To Sonsalla on Nov. 21, 1923, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, North Creek. He died April 5, 1970. Martha was a homemaker, an avid reader and enjoyed writing, painting and gardening.
Martha was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, its Women's Organization and Rosary Society. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and volunteer group for senior citizens of Trempealeau County.
Survivors include five children, Maryan (Justin) Dantonio of Zanesville, Ohio, Luke J. (Peggy) Sonsalla of Chippewa Falls, James M. (Rosetta) and William (Louise) Sonsalla, both of Plant City, Fla., and Grace (Gerald) Wolfe of Arcadia; a sister, Mary Martha Stelmach of Arcadia; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband; son, Edmund; three sisters and seven brothers.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Independence, with Rev. Leonard Kaiser officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Edison Funeral Home, Independence. Friday there will be an American Legion Auxiliary service at 5 p.m., prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a rosary at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Helen J. Surdick
Helen J. Surdick, 75, of La Crosse, died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, in her home.
She was born Aug. 31, 1922, in La Crosse, to John and Julia (Petzel) Miehl. Helen married Joseph J. Surdick on Oct. 27, 1951, at St. John's Catholic Church in La Crosse. Joe preceded her in death on July 5, 1995.
She is survived by a daughter, Susan (John) Blancher; and a son, Joseph S. (Julia) Surdick; grandchildren, Steve, Julia and Katrina Blancher and Joanna Surdick; a sister and brother-in-law, Veronica (Sherman) Stellpflug; a brother, George (June) Miehl; a sister-in-law, Margaret E. Erickson; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a brother, John.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 17, 1998, at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1333 S. 13th St. Reverend Larry Berger will officiate. A private family burial will follow.
Friends may call at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of services.
Memorials are requested to Holy Trinity School or of your choice.

Millard G. Johnson
BLAIR, Wis. - Millard G. Johnson, 82, formerly of Galesville and Trempealeau, and presently a resident of the Grand View Care Center in Blair, died suddenly surrounded by his family, at the home of his daughter, La Vonne Thompson in rural Galesville, on Tuesday, July 14, 1998.
He was born Nov. 14, 1911, in rural Jackson County to Menford and Gena (Seljestad) Johnson. He married Stella Brenengan on June 15, 1932, in Winona, Minn., and they have spent 66 happy years together. Millard worked for the Gale Packing Company, as head mechanic of the field crew for many years. He also farmed in the Galesville and Blair area. He was also a professional butcher by trade, for various stores and for the general public. He enjoyed the outdoors, all sports, antique collecting, socializing with his many friends, and his yearly trip to the West Coast to visit relatives. His greatest joy and treasure were his family.
He is survived by his wife, Stella, a resident of the Grand View Care Center in Blair; one son, Donnie (Helene) Johnson of Galesville; two daughters, La Vonne (Rolly) Thompson of Galesville and Jean (Harland) Gabrielson of Holmen; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Lillian (Elmer) Christopherson of Preston, Minn.; and one sister-in-law, Helen Johnson of Oregon City, Ore.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Orene.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, 1998, at the French Creek Lutheran Church in Ettrick. Rev. Kathryn Ingbritsen will officiate. Burial will be in the French Creek Cemetery.
Friends my call at the Fossum Funeral Home in Onalaska on Friday from 5 until 9 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 11 a.m. until time of services.

Bernice J. "Bea" Hutson
RAPID CITY, S.D. - After a lingering fight against cancer, Bernice J. ``Bea'' Hutson died in her Rapid City home.
Bea was born Jan. 29, 1923, to Emil and Emma Antonson, at Granite Falls, Minn. She grew up on their farm and attended school in Granite Falls.
She married John E. Hutson in 1953. They were married in Warrenton, Va., at Vint Hills Farm Military base. John and Bea moved to John's hometown of Sparta, Wis., in 1956, where they lived until 1988. In 1988, the couple moved to Rapid City, S.D.
Bea dedicated a greater portion of her life to the support of youth activities. She was a co-founder of the Wisconsin High School Rodeo Association. Involved at both the State and National High School Rodeo Association, Bea touched the lives of young cowboys and cowgirls throughout the United States.
She was a lifetime member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association with over 20 years of professional secretary and timing experience.
In Sparta, Bea was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and in Rapid City, she was involved with church circles and activities at the Faith Lutheran Church. She was also active in Rapid City's New Neighbors organization.
Bea died Tuesday, July 14, 1998, in Rapid City, S.D., at the age of 75.
She is survived by her husband, John of Rapid City; and her son, Jon of Chicago, Ill.; her brothers, Arnold Antonson and Ervin Antonson of Granite Falls, Minn.; her sister, Ruth Hanson of Montivideo, Minn.; her brother and sister-in-law, Gordon and Dot Hutson of Sparta; her brother-in-law, Pat Patton of Minneapolis; and mother-in-law, Verna Hutson of Sparta.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Evelyn Strasheim; and her father-in-law, Claude Hutson; and her sister-in-law, Darlene Hutson Patton.
A visitation will be held Thursday, July 16, between 4 and 7 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. memorial service at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City, S.D. Church and graveside services will be held Saturday, July 18, 1998, in Sparta, Wis. In Sparta, services will be held at the Trinity Lutheran Church with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Formal service will be at 11 a.m., followed by interment at the Mount Hope Cemetery.
Osheim-Catron Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements in Rapid City and Page-Smith Funeral Home is responsible for services in Sparta, Wis.
Memorials will be given to the National High School Rodeo Foundation, American Cancer Society and the Rapid City Garden Club.

Robert E. Weigel
Robert E. Weigel, 71, of La Crosse, died on Sunday, June 28, 1998, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Green Bay, Wis. He was born on June 5, 1927, in La Crosse, to Albion and Lucille A. (Olsen) Weigel. He married Bonnie J. Rank on Aug. 26, 1950, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in La Crosse. Bob served in the Navy from 1945 to 1946. He was an electrician for 50 years and an electrical contractor for the past 25 years. Bob was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers 135. He was past president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 1254 of La Crosse; past president of the Wisconsin State Aerie; and past Great Lakes Regional President.
In addition to his wife, Bonnie, he is survived by a daughter, Mary Stuhr of Holmen; three sons, Gary (Starla), Kenneth and Daniel (Diane), all of La Crosse; 14 grandchildren, Kristine, Adam, Megan, Linse, Alycia, Andrew, Phillip, Benjamin, Nicole, Chad, Keith, Ashley, Rachel and Nathan; three great-grandchildren, Alex, Eric and Elainie; two sisters, Lorraine (John) Rau of Vero Beach, Fla., and Patricia Goyette of Appleton, Wis.; and three brothers, Gerald of La Crosse, Thomas (Carol) of Winona, Minn., and James of Valencia, Calif. His parents preceded him in death.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 3, 1998, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, La Crosse. The Rev. Lawrence B. Berger will officiate. Entombment will be in the Gardens of Peace Mausoleum, Mormon Coulee Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Friday from 9:30 to 10 a.m. An Eagles memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Henry N. "Hank" Holley
Henry N. "Hank" Holley, 62, of La Crosse, died on Monday, June 29, 1998.
He was born in Evanston, Ill., on Aug. 26, 1935, to Henry N. Sr., and Gertrude (Safford) Holley. He married Maria Kritchman on Nov. 16, 1957, in La Crosse.
Hank graduated from La Crosse Central High School in 1953, and earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1957. He entered the United States Air Force in 1958, and left as a captain in 1964, after serving five years as a fighter pilot. Hank's love of flying continued throughout his life.
Hank worked as a sales engineer with the Trane Company for several years before moving to La Crosse in 1965. He enjoyed a long and fulfilling career in banking, including positions at the State Bank of La Crosse for 23 years, and in independent financial consulting for four years. For the past six years, Hank has worked at River Bank and was instrumental in establishing the River Bank branch in La Crosse.
Hank was active in many civic organizations during his life. He also served as the treasurer of numerous organizations. He was a former director of the TYME Corporation and State Bank of La Crosse. He was currently a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, the Flyers Association, the Blue Max Aero Club, Kiwanis, the Southside Business Association, the Old Guard, and the Board of Directors of Oak Grove Cemetery Association.
Hank is survived by his wife, Maria; his beloved daughters, Rebecca Holley Guzman and her husband Edward of McFarland, Wis., and Rachel Holley Sciortino and her husband Tony of Menomonee Falls, Wis.; two grandsons, Hank Guzman and Benjamin Sciortino; one sister, Abby (Claude) Reinke of Oceanside, Calif.; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Duane and Arlene Kritchman of Des Moines, Iowa; five nieces; and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 2, at 11 a.m. from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Rev. J.L. Mattes will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the church today from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services. The family requests that memorials be given to Hank Holley Memorial Scholarship Fund at Central High School. The Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is in charge of arrangements.
Hank's treasure in this world was people. He enjoyed supporting and encouraging his fellow man. A gentle, sensitive man of courage and integrity, he put great faith in the human spirit. Hank will be best remembered for his loving heart.

Erma L. Fuller
VICTORY/KENOSHA, Wis. - Erma L. Fuller, 78, of Kenosha and formerly of Victory, died on Monday evening, June 29, 1998, at the Hospitality Manor in Kenosha, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born May 21, 1920, in the town of Genoa, Vernon County, to Herman and Alma (Bobst) Oliver. She lived in La Crosse before moving to Kenosha in 1960. She was a homemaker and an excellent seamstress, and she enjoyed caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also an avid bingo player.
She is survived by one son, Eugene ``Gene'' (Donna) Fuller of Kenosha; three grandchildren, Jennifer (Jon) Aiello of Somers, Wis., Mark Fuller of Kenosha, and Shelly Ashton of Milwaukee; and two great-grandchildren, Anthony Paul Aiello and Alex James Aiello. She is also survived by one sister, Beth Hayter of South Beloit, Ill.; seven brothers, Clifford (Myrtle) Oliver of La Crosse, Ivan Oliver of Ferryville, Arnold (Eileen) Oliver of Stoddard, Richard Oliver of De Soto, Paul Oliver of Orfordville, Orris (Gladys) Oliver of La Crosse and Lorrin Oliver of Westby; one sister-in-law, Evelyn Oliver of De Soto; other relatives; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Merlin Oliver.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 3, 1998, at the Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua, with Rev. Dr. Steven Fossum officiating. Burial will be in the Mormon Coulee Memorial Park in La Crosse. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Piasecki-Althaus-Thulin Funeral Home on 52nd Street in Kenosha. Friends may also call at the Thorson Funeral Home on Friday after 8 a.m.

Betty J. Blihovde
VIROQUA, Wis. - Betty J. Blihovde, 67, of 250 Bigley Plaza, Viroqua, died Monday, June 29, 1998, in LaCrosse. She was born on Oct. 4, 1930, to Arthur G. and Margaret (Siler) Oyer. On March 24, 1956, she was united in marriage to Donald Blihovde. They lived in La Crosse and Ferryville prior to retiring to Viroqua.
She is survived by her husband, Donald; two daughters, Judy Howel (Mark Willger) of Prairie du Chien, and Doris (Silas) Howel of Westby; one son, Donald Blihovde Jr. of Viroqua; six grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Avonelle (Herman) Anderson of Westby; a special niece, Judy Oyer of La Crosse; and nieces and nephews. Her parents, four sisters and one brother preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 3, 1998, at 2:00 p.m. from the Vosseteig Funeral Home, 708 S. Hwy. 14 in Westby. Pastor Jack Mithelman of the Coon Valley Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Coon Valley Lutheran Church Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday evening from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Friday after 1:00 p.m., both at the Vosseteig Funeral Home in Westby.

Jennie L. Youngthunder-MacIntosh
BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis./DULUTH, Minn. - Jennie L. Youngthunder-MacIntosh, 38, of Duluth and formerly of Black River Falls, died Monday, June 29, 1998, in Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. Funeral services will be noon Thursday from the Pat and George Youngthunder residence and burial will be in Decorah Cemetery, both in rural Black River Falls. Friends may call after 7 p.m. today at the Youngthunder residence. The Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls, is serving the family.

Dorothy L. Meek
BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis. - Dorothy L. Meek, 82, of Black River Falls, died Monday, June 29, 1998, in Pine View Nursing Home, Black River Falls. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday from Black River Falls Evangelical Lutheran Church and burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls, and from 9 a.m. until the time of services Friday at the church. Memorials may be given to Black River Falls Evangelical Lutheran Church, Jackson County Humane Society or Black River Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
