Helen K. Neubauer
Helen K. Neubauer, 69, of La Crosse, died on Thursday, Feb. 19th, 1998, at the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Medical Center.
She was born August 10, 1928, in Holmen, Wis., to Edward and Esther (Brown) McCabe. Helen was a 1946 graduate of Holmen High School. She then worked for the La Crosse Autolite prior to her marriage and raising her family. She married Walter M. Neubauer on September 10, 1949, in St. James Catholic Church, La Crosse. She had worked at La Crosse Printing for 23 years, retiring in 1992. Helen was a member of T.O.P.S. and one of her proudest accomplishments was reaching the status of K.O.P.S. for twenty-nine years. She was also the current Co-President of the St. Anne's Altar and Rosary Society at Holy Trinity Catholic Church and was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. Her hobbies included traveling, shopping, baking and making quilts and afghans.
Helen is survived by her husband, Walter; two daughters, Theresa M. Kistler and her longtime friend Robert Ratigan of La Crescent and Diana H. (Rock) Johnson of La Crosse; three sons, David W. (Debra) of Holmen, Robert J. of Galesville and John C. (Shari) of La Crosse; eight grandchildren, Heather (Cris) Morales, Amber and Courtney Kistler, Heidi, Justin and Latasha Neubauer and Andrew and Christopher Neubauer; three sisters, Grace (Lyman) Halverson of Kenosha, Wis., Angeline (James) Haug of Holmen and Mary (Richard) Hanson of Holmen; three brothers, William (Irene) McCabe of West Salem, John (Marlene) McCabe of Holmen and Joseph (Arlone) McCabe of Holmen; her mother-in-law, Lauretta Neubauer of Sparta, Wis.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Francis McCabe; two sisters, Margaret Davidson and Agnes Kofta; two grandchildren, Chelsea and Ian Kistler; and her father-in-law, Mathias Neubauer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, Feb. 23rd, 1998, at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. The Rev. Lawrence B. Berger will officiate. Entombment will be in the St. Francis of Assisi Mausoleum Catholic Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. A rosary will be recited Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m.

Catherine M. Vingers
Catherine M. Vingers, age 84, of La Crosse, died Friday, February 20, 1998, at the Hillview Health Care Center.
She was born on December 12, 1913, to William and Lillian (Plunkett) Ipsen and graduated from La Crosse Central High School. She married Leslie A. Vingers in La Crosse on June 30, 1934.
Catherine worked for Electric AutoLite for 25 years, and later worked as a school crossing guard and an Avon Cosmetic Representative for many years. She was a member of the Roy L. Vingers American Legion Post No. 52 Women's Auxiliary and St. Thomas More Catholic Church Altar Society. Catherine was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and her family will miss her very much.
In addition to her husband, Catherine is survived by one daughter, Gloria (Richard) Nimmo of Holmen; grandchildren, Linda (Len) Deschaine of Holmen, Richard Nimmo of La Crosse, Robert Nimmo of Sparta and Cindy Nimmo of Holmen; four great-grandchildren, Joseph and Jacob Deschaine, Kristen and Richard Nimmo, all of Holmen; three brothers, Wilbert (Jean) Ipsen and William (Mary Jane) Ipsen, both of La Crosse and Henry (Arlene) Ipsen of Florida; along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Geraldine Fazzio and Virginia Mach.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, February 23, 1998, at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church with Rev. Edward Thome officiating. Burial will follow at Catholic Cemetery.
Friends may call on Monday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of services.
Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is in charge of arrangements.

Homer J. Wardwell
Homer J. Wardwell, 83, of La Crosse, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at his home after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born Oct. 10, 1914 to William and Hattie (Jacobus) Wardwell at Retreat, Wis. He served with the U.S. Army for four years during WWII. He married Ethel Erickson on March 27, 1948, in Curtiss, Wis. and enjoyed 50 years of marriage. Homer worked for the Trane Co. for 45 years was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church for over 50 years. He was a member of VFW Post 1530.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel; by two children, Bill Wardwell and his wife, Kathy Emery of Sauk City, Wis., and Karen (Lenny) Jenks of Burnsville, Minn.; by five grandchildren, Mark, Jenny, Alexandra, Joseph and Max; by a brother, Loren (Earleen) Wardell of La Crosse; and by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Maurice and Halsey; and three sisters, Myrtle, Audrey and Ardys.
``He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be forever missed.''
Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. The Reverend Duane Kamrath will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the Dickinsn Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson Street, from 5 to 7 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the service.
Memorials may be given to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or to the Gundersen-Lutheran Hospice Program.

Lenore M. Stenslien
WESTBY, Wis. - Lenore M. Stenslien, 86, of Westby, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at the Norseland Nursing Home in Westby. She was born on July 13, 1911, in Coon Valley to Nordahl O. ``Dinty'' and Maren (Wang) Nelson. She was baptized and confirmed at Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church. In 1929, she graduated from Westby High School and attended St. Olaf College where she studied music. On Feb. 14, 1931, she was united in marriage to Pearly J. Stenslien. She was the organist for Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Westby, and then became a member there: She was the church organist for over 50 years. Lenore played for Baccalaureate and Commencements for many high school graduations. She also played for the silent movies and in later years with the Snowflake Band and for community events.
She is survived by her six children, Patricia (Roger) Jaeger and David (Audrey) Stenslien, both of Westby, Paul (Linda) Stenslien of West Salem, Judy (Robert) Hebl of Greenfield, and twins, Mary (John) Tuff of LaMirada, Calif. and Marty Stenslien of Westby; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Delaine (Donald) Jefson of Westby and Inez (Tennes) Navrestad of Greenwood; and her brother-in-law, Norman Melby of Westby.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Odell Nelson on March 3, 1978; her grandson, Jeffrey Jaeger on Aug. 30, 1978; her husband, Pearly on May 29, 1984, and her sister, Valborg Melby on Aug. 8, 1991.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 1, 1998, at 1 p.m. from Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Westby. Pastor Gary Daines will officiate with burial in the Coon Prairie Cemetery. Friends may call on Saturday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Vosseteig Funeral Home, 708 S. Hwy 14 in Westby, and after 12 noon on Sunday at the church.

Herbert D. Olson
ROCKLAND, Wis. - Herbert D. Olson, 67, of Rockland died of cancer on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. He was born July 19, 1930, in Sparta to John and Mary (Olson) Olson. He married Delores Langrehr on April 1959 in Bangor. Herbert, grew up in the Fish Creek Valley Area, and farmed the family farm his entire adult life. He was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife, Delores of Rockland; four sons, James (Sheryl) Olson of Bangor, David (Kris) Olson of Cashton, Paul Olson of Sparta and Howard Olson of Bangor; one daughter, Kathryn (Allen) Herman of Bangor; two grandsons, Tyler Allen Herman and John David Olson; one step-grandson, Kent (Diane) Kisow of Sheboygan; three great-grandsons, Josh, Ryan and Sam; one brother, Clarence Olson of Rockland; six sisters, Verna (Ernest) La Due of La Crosse, Stella Holmberg of Sparta, Hazel Olson of Naperville, Ill., Ethel (Charles) Warren of Bloomfield, Michigan, Florence Olson of West Allis, Wis. and Joyce (Harold) Arrowood of West Allis, Wis.; several nieces and nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Myrtle Rutlin; two brothers, Everett and Lloyd Olson and a great-step-granddaughter, Abbie.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bangor. Rev. Roy Hefti will officiate. Burial will be in the Rockland Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. till time of services. The Fossum Funeral Home in Bangor is assisting the family with arrangements.

James J. Volden
VIROQUA, Wis. - James J. Volden, age 74, of Viroqua, died Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 24, 1998, at the Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua.
He was born on Feb. 12, 1924 to Mandus and Anna (Olson) Volden. On June 7, 1947 he was united in marriage to Arlene Peterson. They had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last June.
In addition to his wife, Arlene, he is survived by nine children, Duane (Connie) of La Crosse, Richard (Judy) of Onalaska, Ron (Janice) of Madison, Gary (Kathy) of Viroqua, Vickie (Herb) Moore of Owatonna, Minn., Mark (Brenda) of Viroqua, Judy (Larry) Williger of Viroqua, Elaine (Wayne) Kelly of Waterville, Iowa, and Diane (Ron) Christianson of Westby.
He is also survived by his 30 grandchildren, Laine (Kelly) Volden, Ryan Volden, Brent, Ryan and Chris Kimm, Jeff Volden, Stephanie Volden, Kim Volden, Scott (Stacy) Volden, Brian (Tina) Volden, Cory Volden, Marsha and Wendy Olson, Troy, Travis and Eric Volden, Kari Moore, Carolyn Adsit, Melissa, Brooks and Megan Volden, Angie Iverson, Shane Iverson, Nicole Williger, Mandy (Charles) Robitaille, Tiffany Schaller, Patrick and Michael Kelly, Ryan and Kyle Christianson; three great-grandchildren, Michael Volden, Samantha Johnson and Taylor Olson; one brother, Ardel (Mary) of La Crosse; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Arlene; one brother in infancy; and two sons-in-law, Loren Christianson and Daryl Iverson.
James will be remembered as a loving husband, dad and grandpa who enjoyed his family.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998 at 1 p.m. from Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church. Pastors' Paul Jordahl and Steven Meyer will officiate with burial in the Vang Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. with a 7:45 p.m. prayer service at the Vosseteig Funeral Home, 708 S. Hwy. 14 in Westby. Friends may call on Saturday after 12 p.m. at the church.

Delores Lange Kruse
Delores Lange Kruse, 72, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, at Bethany Riverside Nursing Home in La Crosse, where she had been a resident since Aug. of 1995. She moved to La Crosse, in May of 1994, so that she might receive the care she needed from Hearten House in Holmen.
Delores was born to Elizabeth and Ora Miller on April 28, 1925, in Elgin, Ill. In addition to being Mom to her daughters Connie and Joan, Delores enjoyed knitting, sewing, creating stained glass pieces, shopping, golfing with her husband, Don, and her profession as a realtor.
She is survived by her husband, Don Kruse of Elgin, Ill.; two daughters, Connie (John) Stahly of Elgin, Ill. and Joan (Robert) Witte of La Crosse, Wis.; a step-daughter, Karen (Arnie) Rohlwing of Elgin, Ill.; a step-son, Joe Kruse of Elgin, Ill.; and grandchildren, Amanda, Ben and Cory Witte of La Crosse, Wis. and Todd Stahly of Elgin, Ill.
Funeral services will be today at 1 p.m. at the Madison Funeral Home in Elgin, Ill. The Dickinson Funeral Home has been in charge of the arrangements in La Crosse.
The family of Delores Kruse is very thankful for the care she received during these past four years in the Bethany Lutheran system in La Crosse.

James L. Slama
EASTMAN, Wis./MARQUETTE, Iowa - James L. Slama, 53, of Marquette, Iowa, and formerly of Eastman, Wis., died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. Funeral Services will be Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at 11 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Eastman, Rev. John Cassidy officiating. Friends may call today from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien, Wis., where there will be a wake scripture at 8 p.m.
He was born Jan. 31, 1945, in Racine, Wis., son of Daniel and Agnes (Smethurst) Slama. He married LeAnn Kessel on October 14, 1967, at St. Wenceslaus Church in Eastman, Wis. He worked for 3M Company in Prairie du Chien for 32 years. He was a member of the Prairie du Chien National Guard for 16 years.
He is survived by his wife, LeAnn of Marquette, Iowa; one son, Travis (Cindy) Slama of Marquette, Iowa; two daughters, Michele Slama of Prairie du Chien, Wis. and Gail (Dr. Paul) Kunch of Ft. Madison, Iowa; his mother, Agnes Slama of Eastman, Wis.; one brother, Roger (Kathy) Slama; and one sister, Roseann (Roger) Feye, both of Eastman, Wis.; three grandchildren, Brett, Sarah and Evie. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Robert.
