Raymond `Doc' Hulett
TAYLOR, Wis. - Raymond ``Doc'' Hulett, 92, of Taylor, died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at the Onalaska Nursing Home, Onalaska. He was born on Feb. 6, 1906, near York, to parents Edward and Regina Hulett. He moved with his family in 1916, to a farm east of Taylor. He graduated from Taylor High School in 1924. He worked at various jobs in the Taylor area, but mostly helped on the family farm.
Doc lost the thumb of his left hand in an accident while a teenager, and had it surgically replaced with the ring finger of his left hand while he was in the U.S. Army. It was one of the first operations of its kind and the Army made a film of the surgery for use as a medical training aid.
Doc joined the U.S. Army on April 9, 1941, and served over 22 years, attaining the rank of master sergeant in the medics. He was always quick to add ``also in the infantry.'' He served overseas a total of over 80 months. Most of the combat time was in the European, Pacific and China Burma India theatres during World War II. He received many awards, decorations and commendations during his service, but the one he was most proud of was simply ``I was a good soldier just doing my job.''
After leaving the Army, Doc became interested in junior baseball. He was always of the belief that teaching young kids, both boys and girls, discipline and preparing them for the life ahead could be accomplished best through sports. He made up teams of players from Taylor, Blair, Black River Falls, Pigeon Falls, Hixton and Alma Center. This involved a great number of children over the years. He spent thousands of dollars of his own mony on traveling out of town as well as tournament fees, equipment, meals for the kids and maintenance of the baseball diamond.
Doc was never married and lived alone in Taylor for over 30 years. He had five brothers, Arthur, Stanley, Alvin, Selmer and Normey, as well as two sisters, Sadie Molstad and Dorothy Stevens, who have all preceded him in death. He is survived by 11 nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
Doc was a patriot to the country and Army that he served and loved, while applying his love of baseball and discipline to many children. He will be sadly missed.
