Russell D. Flick
De Soto, Wis. - Russell D. Flick, 61, of R.1 De Soto, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, in his home. He was born Nov. 24, 1936, in De Soto to Vernon and Margaret (Parisius) Flick. He graduated from De Soto High School and then served in the Army for four years. On June 16, 1962, he was united in marriage to Bonnie Hess. They lived in the De Soto area all their married years where they were co-owners of the Winneshiek Manufacturing Co.
Russell is survived by his wife, Bonnie of De Soto; one daughter, Kelly Flick of La Crosse; four sisters, Gloria Hutzler of De Soto, Anita Clough of Eau Claire, Diana Flick of La Crosse and Sallie Flick of De Soto; five brothers, Dale of De Soto, Gordon of La Crosse, Keith (Sharon) of La Crosse, Lester (Sue) of De Soto and Harlan (Pam) of Muscoda. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Shirley; and two sisters, Joan Flick and Marilyn Meyer.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 27, 1998, at 11 a.m. in the Larson Funeral Home in De Soto. Pastor Alice Richards will officiate with burial in the De Soto Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. today.

Thomas G. Tollefson
FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Thomas G. Tollefson, 52, of 49 Ried Terrace, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at his home. He was born March 19, 1946 at Appleton. Son of Alvin G. and Grace A. Tebo Tollefson.
He graduated from Green Bay West High School, attended Milton College and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Tom worked several years as quality controller at National Can at Green Bay. He acquired Real Estate Brokers license and worked in that capacity in Green Bay, Viroqua and Fond du Lac. He was employed as a salesman in residential and commercial Security Systems for American Telegraph (ADT) and Wells Fargo and spent the rest of his adult life in various self-employed and sales positions. Tom loved nature and the outdoors where he enjoyed boating and fishing. He was an excellent horseman and dog trainer.
Survivors include his parents of Fond du Lac; one sister, Pamela Tollefson of Bayside, Wis.; and grandmother, Floella Tollefson of Prairie du Chien, Wis.
Memorials, in lieu of flowers, may be sent to the charity of your choice or to Ascension Lutheran Church Building Fund, 37 Martin Place, Fond du Lac, Wis. 54935.
Uecker-Witt is in charge of arrangements. Reverend Jeffrey J. Blain will officiate. Inurnment service will be held at Rienzi Cemetery.

Hugh V. Eddy, Sr.
MERRILLAN, Wis. - Hugh V. Eddy, Sr., 90, of rural Merrillan, died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, in the Tomah Veterans Administration Medical Center.
He was born June 20, 1908, at Sparta, to Edgar N. And Clara (Howard) Eddy. Hugh was raised in the Big Creek area near Sparta. He graduated from Moller's Barber College in Milwaukee.
He married the former Elnora Aleda Gilbertson in 1932, at Black River Falls. The couple had eight children and Elnora died in 1981.
Hugh was a World War II Army veteran. He also had the distinction of being the oldest man with the most dependents to ever be drafted from Jackson County, Wis. When he was drafted into the Army in 1943, at the age of 35, Hugh and his wife had five children.
He was employed as a barber in Cataract, Sparta, and Fort Mc Coy, before coming to Black River Falls. In Black River Falls, Hugh and his brother, John, barbered together. He also owned and operated his own barber shop and had also worked with Howard Pierce, Merlin Horswill, and James Feldmeier. He and his family had lived in various rural locations in Jackson County until purchasing a farm at Wrightsville from his brother, John, in 1944.
Following his retirement in 1973, Hugh enjoyed raising ponies, attending auctions, and visiting with friends and relatives. He also was an every morning customer at Hardee's of Black River Falls for many years.
For the past one and 1/2 years, Hugh was a resident at the Tomah Veterans Administration Medical Center. His family is most appreciative of the excellent care that he was given by the staff of Building 402.
Hugh was a life member of the Disabled American Veteran and was a member of the Miles-Hagen American Legion Post #200 of Black River Falls.
Survivors include three daughters, Janice (Vincent) Blaschke, of Tomah, Christine Sandeen, of La Crosse, and Karen (Stuart) Pfiefer of Mercer; five sons, Hugh Jr. (Doris), of Nelson, Robert (Janet), of Black River Falls, Gary (Soonie) and Howard (Linda), both of Hatfield, and David (June) Eddy, of Mondovi; 27 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; which includes three sets of twins; and many nieces nephews and friends.
In addition to his wife, Hugh was preceded in death by three sisters, Lulu Preston, Pearl Mathews, and Vera Davidson; and four brothers, John, Arthur, Charles, and Roy Eddy, Sr.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 10 a.m. from the Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls. The Rev. Ron Walters (Grandson-in-law) of Park Falls, officiated and burial, with full military honors was conducted by Miles-Hagen American Legion Post #200 and Thompson-Red Cloud VFW Post #1959, was in Riverside Cemetery.
Friends called at the Buswell Funeral Home on Tuesday, Aug. 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until services. There was a VFW service, conducted by the Thompson-Red Cloud VFW Post #1959, at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday in the funeral home.
Casket bearers were Gary Eddy Jr., Scott Eddy, Joshua Eddy, Dan Blaschke, John Krosinski, and Kevin Eddy.

Margaret Frances (Robbins) Staats
Margaret Frances (Robbins) Staats was born in Syracuse, New York, on Oct. 4, 1922 to Dr. and Mrs. Edward Robbins.
She attended St. Lucy's Academy and graduated in 1940. She met her future husband, George Staats, while they were both employed by the Carrier Corporation in Syracuse. Margaret and George were married in St. Lucy's Catholic Church on Aug. 11, 1951.
They made a new home in La Crosse upon George's acceptance of a position at the Trane Company. Margaret graduated from UW-La Crosse in 1977, an avid lifetime learner.
She was a member of the Legion of Mary in Syracuse and a long time member of St. Thomas More Parish in La Crosse.
She served as den mother in the local Cub Scouts. She enjoyed boating, sewing, gardening, lively debate and discussion of topical issues and spending time with her eight grandchildren.
Margaret died at home, surrounded by family in the early morning hours of Aug. 14, 1998. She is preceded in death by her husband, George.
She is survived by Edward and Rhonda Staats of La Crosse and their children, Alexander, Christopher and Jonathan, Elizabeth and Joe Blonigen of Stevens Point and their children, Jason, Andrew and Emily, Robert and Catherine Staats of Palatine, Ill., Sherry and David Poellinger of Green Bay, and their daughter, Melissa, and Kathy and Bill Gianoli of Coon Valley and their son, Troy.
Visitation will be held at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home (200 West Ave.), La Crosse on Sunday evening, Aug. 16, from 6 to 8 p.m., with a rosary to begin at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church on Monday, Aug. 17 at 11 a.m., followed by entombment at Chapel of Devotion Mausoleum at Woodlawn Cemetery.
Memorials preferred to New Horizons Shelter-Women's Center.

Ruth I. Johnson
ONALASKA, Wis. - Ruth I. Johnson, 85 years of Onalaska, died peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 13, 1998 at the Onalaska Care Center, where she was a resident.
She was born Jan. 20, 1913 in Burns Township to Ray and Isabelle (Indahl) Scafe. She was confirmed in the Bells Coulee Lutheran Church by the Rev. Otterson. She married Vernie Johnson on Dec. 24, 1932 in West Salem. Ruth served as Club Leader for the Onalaska Merry Makers 4-H Club for 40 years. She also spent summers with the group at Upham Woods in Wisconsin Dells. Ruth was an active exhibitor with the La Crosse County Fair, and with fair judging, and had a special talent for tying fish flies, and she continued this work for many years.
She is survived by her husband, Vernie L. Johnson of Onalaska; one son, Donald V. (Myra) Johnson of Onalaska; two daughters, Leona M. (Arlan) Gilbertson of West Salem, Lois J. Crady of Sparta; one brother, Albert (Helen) Scafe of Ashton, Idaho; one sister, Isabel (Elmer) Kastenschmidt of Mindoro; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Clifford; one brother, Harry Scafe; and two sisters, Ethel Staff, and Evelyn Freier.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 17, 1998 at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Onalaska. Rev. Norris Baumann will officiate. Burial will be in the Neshonoc Cemetery in West Salem. Friends may call at the Fossum Funeral Home in Onalaska from 5 until 8 p.m., and at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until time of services.

Loren F. Ghelf
GENOA, Wis. - Loren F. Ghelf, age 61, of Genoa, died on Friday morning, Aug. 14, 1998 at his home.
He was born on June 3, 1937 in Jefferson Township, rural Viroqua to Francis A. and Willis (Mills) Ghelf. He graduated from De Soto High School in 1955. He then served in the U.S. Army and on May 26, 1962 married Jean Venner in Genoa. They lived in Redmound, rural DeSoto where he hauled milk and then in Victory, prior to moving to Genoa. He had worked at Trane Company and for the past 30 years worked in customer service at Ferguson Plumbing Supply in La Crosse. He retired due to failing health in February, 1998. He had served as Mayor of Genoa for 18 years and was a member of the Genoa-DeSoto American Legion Post No. 246 of which he was a past commander, and St. Charles Catholic Church in Genoa. He also had served on the Genoa Fire Department. One of the greatest enjoyments for Loren was to go to his brother, Wayne's farm near Redmound and help with field work. After the death of his brother he would assist his nephew, Kirk Ghelf.
Loren is survived by his wife, Jean; one daughter, Joan (Steve) Kennedy of Des Moines, Iowa; three grandchildren, Sean Bagniewski, Matthew Kennedy, and Kristen Kennedy. He is also survived by one sister, Debbie Wickham of De Soto; one sister-in-law, Mary Ghelf of Genoa; 14 nieces and nephews; and 18 great-nieces and great-nephews; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his father in 1991, his mother in 1997, and three brothers, Tom in 1964, Ronald in 1987, and Wayne in 1992.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 17, 1998 at St. Charles Catholic Church in Genoa with Father Larry Dunklee officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military rites by Genoa-DeSoto American Legion Post No. 246. Friends may call on Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua, where there will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call at the church after 9:30 a.m. on Monday.

Gladys E. (Thompson) Dale
BLAIR, Wis. - Gladys E. (Thompson) Dale, age 87, of Blair, Wis., died on Friday, Aug. 14, 1998 in the Grand View Care Center in Blair, Wis.
Gladys was born on April 18, 1911 in Tappen Coulee, rural Blair, Wis. to Brede and Jonette (Johnson) Austad. She was baptized and confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church in Blair, Wis.
Gladys attended the Sunnyside Elementary School in Tappen Coulee and graduated from the Blair High School. She attended beauty school in Winona, Minn. and was employed as a beautician. Gladys was also employed as a cook and waitress at area restaurants and the bakery and also worked at the Countryside Lefse Company prior to her retirement.
Gladys married Norman Thompson on June 3, 1944 in Blair, Wis. He preceded her in death on April 14, 1957. She later married Thomas Dale on April 14, 1973 in Blair, Wis. He preceded her in death on Oct. 29, 1990.
Mrs. Dale is survived by a son, Michael (Kathryn) Thompson of Osseo, Wis.; three daughters, Alta (Roger) Fuchs, Joanette (Duane) Stenberg and Glenda (Michael) Berg, all of Blair, Wis.; two step-sons, Allan Dale of Chippewa Falls, Wis., and La Vern Dale of Galesville, Wis.; eight grandchildren, Craig (Jennifer) and Cory (Jennifer) Thompson, Kayla (Mark) Skoyen, Angela (Sid) Moen, Paula (Steven) Zastrow, and Jason (Heather), Gregory and Carol Stenberg; five great-grandchildren, and a sister, Isla Berg of the Grand View Care Center in Blair, Wis.
In addition to her parents and husband, Gladys was preceded in death by a daughter, Bonita; a granddaughter, Kelli; two sisters, Mable Solberg and Clara Gunderson and two brothers, Omar and Albert Austad.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Aug. 17, 1998 at 11 a.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church with burial in the church cemetery both in Blair, Wis. Rev. Kevin Jones will officiate.
Gladys's grandchildren will serve as casket bearers.
Visitation will be Sunday, August 16, 1998 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Jack Funeral Home in Blair, Wis. and also one hour prior to the services at the church on Monday.
