Robert Carl Schenk
Robert Carl Schenk, 63, of New Lisbon, died March 5 at Hoss Memorial Hospital in Mauston.
Mr. Schenk, the son of Carl and Lillian Schenk, and was born March 6, 1933 in Rice Lake. He married Anne Simmons on June 7, 1958 in Haugen. Mr. Schenk lived 35 years in Kenosha, where he was employed by American Motors and the Chrysler Corporation for 30 years before moving to the New Lisbon area in 1993. He was a member of the Dusty Roadrunners Good Sam Camping Club, Carriage Travel Club and the Local 72 UAW. He served for 2 years in the Army.
He is survived by his wife, Anne; a son, Bruce of Kenosha; two daughters, Connie Piquette of Houston, Texas, and Colleen Schenk of Waukegan, Ill.; his father, Carl, of Rice Lake; two brothers, John of Gurney, Ill., and Carl R. of Hermantown, Minn.; a sister Charlene Dakin of Lafayette, Calif.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Selmer M. Severson
Selmer M. Severson, 91, of Sand Creek died March 21 at the Dallas Healthcare Center.
Mr. Severson was born March 26, 1905 in Sand Creek to Sam and Tone (Homme) Severson. He was raised at Sand Creek and attended school there. On Jan. 30, 1929 he married Beatrice T. Wheeler in Barron. They owned Severson's Grocery Store in Sand Creek for 47 years. Mr. Severson was a member of the Sons of Norway and an avid flyer and enjoyed fishing and playing the violin.
He is survived by his son Michael of Chetek; his daughter LuWanna Rederer of Chetek; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his brother Maurice of Sand Creek; and his sister Gladys Sells of Chetek.
He was preceded in death by his wife Beatrice on Aug. 25, 1988 and a daughter, Darlene Waterhouse.

Dennis Siewert
Dennis W. Siewert, 36, of Rice Lake, died March 10 at Lakeview Medical Center.
Mr. Siewert was born July 14, 1960 to DeWayne and Rita Siewert in Rice Lake, where he resided all his life.
Survivors include his parents, DeWayne and Rita; two brothers, Mark of Phillips and Scott of Eau Claire; and his maternal grandmother, Beatrice Howard of Rice Lake.

Sister Ambrosine Gembara
Sister Ambrosine Gembara, SSJ-TOSF, of Immaculata Congregational Home in Bartlett, Ill., died March 16 . A Mass of Resurrection was March 20 at the Sacred Heart Chapel of the Immaculata Convent, with burial in Resurrection Cemetery in Justice, Ill.
Sister Gembara spent 66 years in religious life teaching primary grades at St. Adalber in Milwaukee; and St. Mary of Perpetual Help and Our Lady of Sorrows in Chicago. Prior to coming to Immaculata Convent she lived in Rice Lake at St. Francis Convent.
Survivors include two sisters, Claire Piwowar and Sister M. Louise, SSJ; and a brother, Matthew.

Mabel Spahn
Mabel Spahn, 83, of Birchwood, died March 9 at Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry, Ill.
The former Mabel Morey was born Nov. 11, 1913 in Chicago to Edward and Grace Morey. She resided in Chicago, where she married John F. Spahn. Mrs. Spahn had worked at Laystrom Manufacturing as a punch press operator for over 30 years, retiring to Birchwood in 1982.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara White of Crystal Lake, Ill.; a son, John of Hampshire, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Spahn died in 1971. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Wayne and Donald; and five grandchildren.

Carl Stang
Carl A. Stang, 91, of Prairie Farm died March 5 at the Pioneer Nursing Home in Prairie Farm.
Mr. Stang was born April 29, 1905 in the Town of Prairie Farm, the eldest son of David and Anna Marie (Johnson) Stang. He was baptized and confirmed in the Solum Norsk Evangelical Lutheran Church and grew up on the family farm. During WW II he served overseas in the Army vehicle maintenance division. Upon returning home, he remained on the farm with his brothers and sisters until moving to Pioneer Home in April 1993. He was an active member of the American Legion.
Survivors include a brother, Julius; and a sister, Marie Stang, both of Prairie Farm.

Hazel Stokes
Hazel Stokes, 77, of Barron, died March 30 at Barron Medical Center. Interment will be at Wayside Cemetery in Barron.
Mrs. Stokes was born Dec. 6, 1919 in the Town of Maple Grove to Jess and Maud (Hanson) Lake. She grew up in the Barron area and on Nov. 6, 1937 she married Alvin Stokes in Rice Lake. She worked at the Munsingwear plant in Barron and later at the Farmers Store in the dry goods department. Mrs. Stokes then worked at the apron factory for a short time. In later years she was a homemakers aide for the Department of Social Services. She also helped her husband with his bait shop. Mrs. Stokes was a member of United Methodist Women and an active member of Hope Ladies' Aid for over 50 years. She enjoyed her flower gardens, quilting and sewing.
Survivors include two sons, Larry of Barron, and Gerland of Almena; two daughters, Patricia Turgeson of Rice Lake and Darlene Nelson of Barron; 15 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren; a brother, Niles Lake of Belvedere, Ill.; and three sisters, Dorothy Schneider of Eau Claire, Eleanor Erickson of Barron, and Irene Finsterwalder of Roseville, Minn.
Mr. Stokes died in 1988. Mrs. Stokes was also preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca Ann, and a granddaughter, Rebecca Diane.

Lumir Subrt
Lumir Subrt, 77, of Poynette and formerly of Rice Lake, died March 26 at the Columbia County Health Care Center in Wyocena.
Mr. Subrt was born March18, 1920 in Rice Lake to Rudolf and Otillie Subrt. He spent his early years in the Town of Bear Lake. In 1941 he entered the Army and served in France during World War II, where he was wounded in the Battle of Normandy and was awarded the Purple Heart. Later he was with the Corps of Engineers division in France. In 1945 he returned home to farm and later moved to Chicago, where he operated a landscaping and tree trimming business. On Nov. 20, 1965 he married Eleanor Svitak in Chicago. They moved to Poynette in 1981. Mr. Subrt was a member of the VFW, Veterans For Peace and the WFLA-ZCBJ Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor, and his son Clark, both of Poynette; and two sisters, Martha Frolik of Rice Lake and Mary Jean Just of Cumberland.

Robert Taylor
Robert D. Taylor, 52, of Dallas died March 4 in Aspen, Colo.
Mr. Taylor was born Sept. 19, 1944 in Rice Lake to Arthur and Viola (Borgen) Taylor. He was raised on a farm near Dallas and graduated from Barron High School in 1962. He entered the Army and served 2 years in Thailand before attending Chippewa Valley Technical College, where he graduated with a degree in agribusiness. Mr. Taylor had spent a winter working in the ski patrol at Buttermilk Mountain in Aspen. On Oct. 7, 1972 he married Lynn Perry in Barron. They farmed near Dallas and, later, Mr. Taylor worked as a rural mail carrier for the Chetek post office. He had served on the church council, including as president. He also had served on the Town of Dallas board. Mr. Taylor had been active in bowling, golf, softball and skiing and also enjoyed deer hunting and watching and reading about sports. He had also served as Dallas Girls Softball coach and was supportive of community athletics. One of his biggest joys was supporting his daughters' activities at home and in school.
Survivors include his wife, Lynn; two daughters, Jessica and Amanda, both of Dallas; two sisters, Sharon Sawusch of Park Ridge, Ill., and Jan Kearsey of Aspen.

Bernard Thome
Bernard F. Thome, 68, of Rice Lake died March 3 at St. Joseph Hospital in Marshfield.
He was born Jan. 2, 1929 to Fred and Frances Thome in the Town of Bear Lake, where he grew up and attended Edgewood Rural School. As a young man, Mr. Thome worked at the concrete factory in Rice Lake, Master Engines Exchange and Vinopal's City Service Station as a mechanic from 1948 until his induction into the U.S. Army in January 1951. In 1953, he returned to Rice Lake and continued working as a mechanic at City Service Station, which later became known as Main Street Service Station. He worked there for Chuck Hildebrandt until the station closed. He was working part-time as a mechanic for Cenex in Rice Lake.
Mr. Thome married the former Betty Lou Hanson in Rice Lake on Aug. 13, 1955 and was a widower since February 1996. Survivors include a son, Steve of Cameron; two grandchildren; two brothers, Ray Thome of Lisle, Ill., and Larry Thome of Rice Lake; and five sisters, Audrey Bilodeau, Mildred Frank and Betty Sirek, all of Rice Lake, Agnes Hrouda of Haugen, and Suzanne Thome of Lisle, Ill.
