Georgia Setterquist Cowles, 92
Georgia Setterquist Cowles, 92, of Gainesville, Fla., died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, at Shands at the University of Florida.
She was born in Havre, Mont., and lived in River Falls for almost 60 years with her first husband, Theodore F. Setterquist, chair and faculty member of the Department of Chemistry at UW-River Falls.
In 1987 she moved to West Columbia, Texas, with her second husband, Osborne B. Cowles, an intercollegiate coach who began his career at UW-RF. She had lived with her daughter, Janet, for the last 4 years.
She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in River Falls and an active community member.
Survivors include her daughter, Janet Gharrity; two grandsons: James Gharrity of Janesville, and Christopher Gharrity of Denver; and three grandchildren: Leah, Matthew and Griffin.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. on Jan. 8, at Trinity Episcopal Church.
Memorials can be made as donations to the National Jewish Medical and Research Center, 1400 Jackson St., Denver, Colo., 80206-2762.

Mae L. Dado, 81
Mae LaVonne Dado, 81, of River Falls, died on Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, at the River Falls Area Hospital.
She was born May 2, 1918, in the town of Vance Creek in Barron County, the daughter of Charles and Alice Greene.
She married Michael E. Dado on June 19, 1937, in Faribault, Minn. They settled in the town of Vance Creek where they farmed for 20 years. They moved to Reeve, where they operated a service station for 9 years.
In 1967 they moved to River Falls, where they both worked at UW-River Falls. Mae retired in 1975 and continued to live in River Falls until her death.
She was an active member of St. Bridget Catholic Church. She enjoyed playing cards, camping and spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Alice; two grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Michael; one sister, Florence of Faribault, Minn.; her sons: Gary and Arlene Dado of Amery; Kenneth and Cheryl of Balsam Lake, Mike and Diane Dado of River Falls; her daughters: Patricia and Allen Gale of Hastings, Minn., and Kathleen and Jeff Dusek of River Falls; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral was Tuesday, Dec. 21, at St. Bridget Catholic Church with the Rev. Jerry Harris officiating.
Interment was in St. Bridget's Cemetery in River Falls.

Anna M. Grotenhuis, 85
Anna M. Grotenhuis, 85, of River Falls, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, at The Lutheran Home: River Falls. She had been a resident of The Lutheran Home for several years.
Prior to moving to The Lutheran Home, Anna and her husband, George, lived in the WelLHaven Senior Apartments and Briarwood Apartments, both in River Falls.
She was born on March 8, 1914, in Beldenville, the daughter of Oscar and Petra (Hokling) Peterson. She attended the one-room country school at South Rush River. Following school, she worked as a live-in nanny in the Twin Cities. On Nov. 16, 1938, she married George Grotenhuis at the Norwegian Lutheran Parsonage of South Rush River, now Our Savior's Lutheran Church. The couple had five children: Darlene, Diane, Donna, Deloris and Allen.
They lived in the town of Martell until the early 1960s when they moved into the city of River Falls. Friends have told Anna's family that she was the most caring, giving and loving person. Her life centered around her love for her family and friends.
She didn't have a job outside the home, but was always there to help others, whether it was babysitting, taking people to medical appointments, delivering Meals on Wheels, coordinating neighborhood drives for charities and staining and varnishing new homes George built.
When she wasn't busy canning, baking, cooking or gardening, she was busy with needlework. She enjoyed playing games with her family, friends and neighbors, going to the family cabin, traveling and being involved in the Homemaker's Club.
She loved children, and enjoyed teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at the First Reformed Church in Baldwin.
She had several health challenges during the past 13 years. She never complained and always kept her sense of humor. Through her faith in God she found strength to deal with life's challenges.
Visits from family and friends were very important and appreciated. Christmas was her favorite time of the year and her Norwegian heritage was displayed as she prepared lefse, rosettes, fattigman, krumkaka, roumagrot, fruit soup and sandbakkels.
She loved all the lights, singing, poems and decorations that accompany the holidays. Thirty years ago she was planning a Christmas Eve dinner for 50 relatives and served them lutefisk.
George and Anna shared a special time together the night prior to her death, as they enjoyed a Christmas program at The Lutheran Home.
She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Julie Biermaier; and her brothers: Arthur, Edor, Palmer and Walter Peterson.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, George, of River Falls; her daughters: Darlene and Tom Myers of Hastings, Minn., Diane and Bob Erickson of Belle Plaine, Minn., Donna and Gary Johnson of Tomah, and Deloris and Tom McArdle of Shoreview, Minn.; a son: Allen and Donna Grotenhuis of Palm Harbor, Fla.; her grandchildren: Scott and Sandy Myers, Jodi and Steve Nielsen, Jeffrey and Emily Myers, Amy and Jens Winkel, Jason Erickson, Adam Johnson, Ryan Johnson, Kelsey Johnson, Bradley Johnson, Melissa McArdle, Sarah McArdle, Kim and Ryan Barker, Kelly Grotenhuis; great-grandchildren: Brittney and Trent Nielsen, Alex and Alaina Myers, Zach Biermaier, Jazmine Barker; her sisters: Esther Hoklin of Sioux City, Iowa, Alice and Russell Hanson of Beldenville, June Cunningham of Chippewa Falls; a brother: Newell and Mabel Peterson.
Funeral was Saturday, Dec. 18, at the First Reformed Church in Baldwin, with the Rev. Harlan DeJong officiating. Organist was Brenda Lokker and soloist was Theresa Johnson with congregational singing. A special poem was read by Melissa McArdle. Readings were by Scott Myers, Jodi Nielsen and Sarah McArdle.
Burial was in the Baldwin Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Scott Myers, Jeffrey Myers, Jason Erickson, Adam Johnson, Ryan Johnson and Bradley Johnson.
Memorials are preferred.
Pallbearers were her grandsons.
Cashman Mortuary handled arrangements.

Richard V. Bucek, 50
Richard Vladimir Bucek, 50, died Monday, Dec. 20, 1999, at his home in River Falls.
He was born Nov. 2, 1949, in Minneapolis, the son of Vladimir and Jeann Bucek.
He graduated from high school in Minneapolis. He was a staff sergeant in the United States Army in the early 1970s and served in Vietnam. He lived in River Falls for 5 years, working at Fox's Ace Hardware for a time.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Jean M. Bucek.
He is survived by his father, Vladimir "Lad" H. Bucek of Brainerd, Minn.; a sister, Linda and Jim Pedersen of Shakopee, Minn.; nieces Kathye Jo and Dawn; great-nephews Chad and Zachary; a good friend, George LaFave; other relatives and friends.
Memorial service was Tuesday, Dec. 28, at Nelson-Murphy Funeral Home, with Randy Baar officiating.
Interment was at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Nelson-Murphy Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Gertrude L. Gore, 81
Gertrude L. Gore, 81, of River Falls died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999, at Osseo Area Medical Center in Osseo.
She was born March 15, 1918, in Barron County, to John and Ruth (Quam) Prosser. She married Clarence Gore on June 29, 1940.
While living in Turtle Lake she worked as a seamstress. In 1961 she moved to Osseo and worked as a bookkeeper for the Beef River Telephone Co. She has been a resident of River Falls since 1967.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence, who died Sept. 21, 1979; her parents, John and Ruth; and a brother, Hugh Prosser.
She is survived by her children: Linda Johnson of White Bear Lake, Minn., Becky and Allen Rongstad of Osseo, Kristine and Paul Brown Gore of Hull, Quebec, Lance and Julie Gore of River Falls; a brother, Robert Prosser of Turtle Lake; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral was Monday, Dec. 27, at Park View Methodist Church in Turtle Lake, with the Rev. Ted Simpson officiating.
Burial was in Lake View Cemetery, Turtle Lake.

Loretta Steffenhagen, 76
Loretta Steffenhagen, 76, of River Falls, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at The Lutheran Home: River Falls.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 30, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Green Bay.
Burial will be in the Fort Howard Cemetery in Green Bay. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Memorials are preferred.

Frankie J. Weiss, 73
Frankie J. Weiss, 73 of Osceola died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999 at the Osceola Medical Center.
She was born Dec. 28, 1925 in River Falls, the daughter of Francis and Hazel (Edquist) Kelly.
She graduated from River Falls High School and attended UW-RF for one year.
On May 2, 1944 she married Sheldon A. Weiss in Madison. She and Sheldon owned the Big Lake Store. She was always a homemaker and outstanding mother and grandmother. She enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, reading and music. She received special honors for her volunteering at her local hospital and church.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by her sons: Terry and Margie Weiss; Sheldon "Dean" and Kelley Weiss; her daughters: Carol and Don Gilbert; Jeannie Palmsteen; Wendy and Jody Videen; her sister: Connie Cudd; 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday at the St. Joseph Church by Fr. Thomas Thompson. Music was provided by Diane Newman and Marie Weiss.
Interment was in the St. Mary Cemetery in Farmington.
