Ethel I. McKahan, 90
Ethel Izora McKahan, 90, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998.
She was born to Fanny and George Dumond on April 22, 1908, in Ellsworth. She was baptized in 1908 and confirmed at Ezekiel Lutheran Church on Aug. 15, 1937.
Her step-mother was Jessie Dumond. Her brothers and sisters were Chester Dumond, Grace Heacox, Vivian Bratlie, Ermyne Collamore, Eunice Stehlow, Leo Collamore, Joyce Olson and Norval Dumond.
In 1925 she married Selmer Peterson. They had three children: Geniveve (Maurice) Reazin, Loretta (George) Most and David (Joanne) Peterson.
In 1964 she married George McKahan and the families of Ray (Betty), Bob (Joyce), and Melvin (Virginia) McKahan, and Donna (Jim) Killian, Doris Spear and Mary (Wayne) Olson joined her family.
She was a member of Ezekiel Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her children: Loretta and David; her step-children: Mary, Doris and Donna; her brother, Norval; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral was Monday, Dec. 14, at Ezekiel Lutheran Church with the Rev. William Montgomery officiating.
She was to be buried in the Hartland Presbyterian Cemetery, south of Ellsworth.
Cashman Mortuary handled arrangements.

Gary L. Halverson, 50
Gary Lee Halverson, 50, died in his sleep on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, of heart failure.
He was born in St. Peter, Minn., on Oct. 20, 1948. He completed high school in Emerado, N.D.
He attended UW-River Falls and later graduated from Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College in New Richmond.
He served in the Strategic Air Command of the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict. He later served with the Wisconsin Army Guard.
He was employed by the S.B. Foote Company of Red Wing, Minn. He was an avid motorcyclist and enjoyed cross country rides.
His favorite pastime was bow hunting. He was a past member of Masonic Lodge #109. He was a current member of the Vietnam Veteran's Association, American Legion Post #121, and 40 et. 8 Voiture #904.
He lived with his parents on a farm in rural River Falls and assisted his father in the farm operation.
He is survived by his parents, Adolph J. and Marilyn Halverson; two brothers: Kurt and Kim; a sister, Adria Alamami; two sons: Chip Halverson of River Falls and Kevin Floyd of Milwaukee; and a daughter, Jamie Halverson of Fredric.
Visitation was Friday, Dec. 11, at Cashman Mortuary.
Funeral was Saturday, Dec. 12, at Ezekiel Lutheran Church with the Rev. William Montgomery officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Chip Halverson, Dave Halverson, Kevin Floyd, Kim Halverson, Mike Halverson and Royce Baar.
Cashman Mortuary handled arrangements.

Marie C. Denissen, 93
Marie C. Nimsch Denissen, 93, of Maplewood, Minn., died Oct. 5, 1998.
She is survived by two children: Marlene Denissen and the Rev. Dan Denissen of River Falls; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a sister Pauline Bidon.
She was born March 31, 1905.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at River Valley Christian Church, 5900 Lake Elmo Ave. North (Hwy. 36 and CTH 17), Lake Elmo, Minn.
Visitation will be an hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery. Memorials are preferred.

Rebecca Hoffmeyer, 46
Rebecca E. "Becky" Hoffmeyer, 46, River Falls, died Sept. 30, 1998 at United Hospital in St. Paul following a long illness.
The daughter of Frank and Edith Hoffmeyer, she was born July 3, 1952.
She is survived by her father and stepmother, Frank and Leona Hoffmeyer of River Falls; sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Elmer Perkins Sr. of Ellsworth; brother and sister-in-law, Don and Crystal Hoffmeyer of Lake City, Minn.; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, her sister Pamela, her nephew Gordon Gibbs and her grandparents.
The funeral was Sunday at First Baptist Church of River Falls with the Rev. Robert Lillo officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.

Al Kraft, 88
Al (Elias John) Kraft, 88, of River Falls, and formerly of Aberdeen, S.D., died Oct. 5, 1998 in River Falls.
The son of Fred and Rosalia Goetz Kraft, he was born Oct. 13, 1909 in Aberdeen. He grew up there and graduated from Central High School and the Aberdeen School of Business.
He married Bessie Ann Niesen on Oct. 30, 1931 in Miller, S.D.
As a young man, he worked for the Milwaukee Railroad and was stationed in Chicago. He longed to return to South Dakota, and he became the state purchasing agent in Pierre, setting standards that are still in use. He returned to Aberdeen and worked for the Internal Revenue Service, eventually becoming field division chief.
He then worked for Midland Distributors of Sioux Falls where he was Salesman of the Year several times.
He retired in 1971 to spend more time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed sports, crossword puzzles and novels of the early West.
At age 35 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged with the rank of yeoman 2nd Class at the end of the war.
Mr. Kraft was a life-long Democrat, and as a young man worked, through many public speaking engagements, to build the party in South Dakota.
He held chief ranger positions with the Catholic Order of Foresters of the Aberdeen Court where he spearheaded many fundraisers.
Mr. Kraft worked to build the American Legion baseball program in South Dakota.
As a youth he was a member of St. Mary's Church in Aberdeen, acting as altar boy at the dedication of the new church. He later was a member and served as an usher for many years at Sacred Heart Church in Aberdeen.
He also was affiliated with the Elks, United Commercial Travelers and the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son Kenneth, who died in 1962; a grandson; two brothers; a sister; and a brother-in-law.
Mr. Kraft is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law: Alan and Denise of rural Hammond and Dennis and Ruth of Jamestown, N.D.; three daughters and sons-in-law: Marlyce and Edward Stader of Sturgis, S.D., Jackie and Jake Vezzoli of Burnsville, Minn., and Mayren and Jack DeCrans of Blaine, Minn.; 20 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Bridget Catholic Church. Interment will be at St. Bridget's Cemetery.
Visitation was set for 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Cashman Mortuary.
Pallbearers are grandsons Chris DeCrans, Tony and Rick Vezzoli and Steven, Kendall, Scott, Ken and Al John Kraft.

Matthew Leier, 28
Matthew Leier, 28, Star Prairie, died Sept. 30, 1998.
The son of Ronald and Claudia (Christenson) Leier, he was born Dec. 13, 1969, in River Falls.
He graduated from St. Croix Central High School in 1989 and attended Indianhead Vocational Technical Institute in Rice Lake for two years, earning a degree in small business administration.
He had been working for 3 1/2 years for Scientific Molding Corporation in Somerset.
He was an Eagle Scout and a member of the St. Croix Harley Riders. He enjoyed country western concerts, snowmobiling, four-wheeling, hunting and especially motorcycling. He particularly enjoyed listening to WIXK and Allan Cooper.
Mr. Leier is survived by his parents, Ron and Claudia Leier of New Richmond; son, Michael of Rice Lake; one sister and brother-in-law, Christina and Robert Ennis of New Richmond; grandparents, Wesley and Donnalda Christenson of Amery and August and Dorothy Leier of Somerset; and three nephews, Joshua, Zachary and Andrew.
The funeral was held Oct. 4 at the United Methodist Church in New Richmond with the Revs. Patricia Asp Zealley and Alan George officiating. Jerry Rang was organist, and Paul Gavic played guitar and sang.
Casketbearers were Bryan Johnston, Chris Rick, Jeremy Hohler, Jason Standert, Dan Fuller and Joe, Cory, Greg and Ted Leier. Rob Ennis was honorary casketbearer.

Clifford E. Mayer, 79
Clifford Eugene Mayer, 79, of Hastings, Minn., and formerly of Hudson, died Oct. 3, 1998 at his home in Hastings of cancer.
The son of Ernest and Edna (Nye) Mayer, he was born Aug. 28, 1919 in Upham, N.D. He attended school systems in North Dakota and Wisconsin.
He worked on the family farm helping his father support the family. Later he worked as a railroad engineer. He worked for the Soo Line for 10 years and then for Hudson Memorial Hospital for another 10 years. He worked at St. John's Hospital for 17 years before retiring in 1984.
On Jan. 23, 1943, he married Effie Nelson in River Falls. They had four children.
Mr. Mayer enjoyed fishing and doing yard work at his home.
He was preceded in death by his son James, sister Dorothy and brother Donald.
He is survived by his wife Effie of Hastings; two daughters, Barbara Tri of Cottage Grove, Minn., and Diane Mayer of Denver, Colo.; son Michael Mayer of Hudson; sister Donna Coulter of Hudson; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral was Tuesday at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson with Pastor Keith Lueneburg officiating. Cheryl Forester sang and played the organ.
Casketbearers were Jeannie Tri, Brian Kelly, Matt Graetz, Arthur Coulter and Neil Wilcoxson.
Burial is in the Willow River Cemetery in Hudson. Memorials are preferred.
