Kessler, Valerie A. (nee Fink)
October 6, 1949 - November 17, 2002
JANESVILLE -- Valerie A. (nee Fink) Kessler, age 53, of 302 N. Pearl St., died Sun., Nov. 17, 2002, at home. She was born on Oct. 6, 1949, in Edgerton, and was the daughter of Odin and Shirley (Brendon) Fink. Valerie married Albert Max Kessler on July 5, 1968, in Rockford, IL. He died on Nov. 18, 2000. She was employed by K-Mart and was a member of the Women of the Moose.
She is survived by her son, Victor (Denise) Kessler of Las Vegas, NV; her 3 daughters: Amy Kinsey of St. Louis, MO, Beth Kessler, and Odessa Kessler, both of Victorville, CA; 9 grandchildren; her father, Odin Fink of Janesville; her 2 sisters, Linda (Robert) Kleba of Belvidere, IL, and Peggy Forrett of Janesville. She was preceded in death by her mother and husband.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Thurs., Nov. 21, 2002, at the SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME, with Rev. John Hagen officiating. Friends may call on Thursday from 2 p.m. until the time of services at the funeral home.

Kilmer, Wanda Maxine
August 9, 1919 - November 15, 2002
JANESVILLE -- Wanda Maxine Kilmer, age 83, of 1120 Elida St., died Fri., Nov. 15, 2002, at Haven House Hospice. She was born in Janesville on Aug. 9, 1919, the daughter of Wandell "Rosy" and Margaret (Semrow) Kilmer. A lifelong Janesville resident, Wanda was a 1937 graduate of Janesville High School and was employed by Parker Pen for over 40 years before her retirement in October, 1981.
She is survived by her brother, John "Jack" (Mildred) Kilmer; and sister, Doris (LeRoy) Keegan; both of Janesville; 2 brothers-in-law, Gene Frye of Afton and Norman Johnson of Madison; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and 2 sisters, Billie Frye and Betty Johnson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tues., Nov. 19, 2002, in the SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME, with Rev. James Melvin officiating. Burial will be in the Town of Rock Cemetery. Friends may call at the SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the hour of service.

Lilja, Sharon L.
June 19, 1943 - November 21, 2002
PECATONICA, IL/JANESVILLE -- Sharon L. Lilja, age 59, of Pecatonica, IL, died at 8:57 a.m. Thurs., Nov. 21, 2002, in Rockford Memorial Hospital. She was born on June 19, 1943, in Portage, WI, daughter of Palmer and Geraldine (Dutcher) Peterson. She lived the past 11 years in Pecatonica, moving there from Janesville, WI. She was married to Larry Lilja in the First Lutheran Church, Janesville, on March 10, 1991, and was a member of First Lutheran Church, Pecatonica. She graduated from Janesville Senior High School, Janesville.
Survivors include her husband, Larry Lilja of Pecatonica; a brother, Larry (Marilyn) Peterson of Darlington, WI; 4 stepchildren: Robin Lilja, Jana Lilja, Krista (Ed) Gellis, and Bjorn Lilja; 7 step-grandchildren: Kyra, Corbett, Etienne, Madeline, Keziah, Adah, and Israel; a niece, Kristin; 2 nephews, Chad and Todd; and many very special friends.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Mon., Nov. 25, 2002, at FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH, Pecatonica, with Rev. Tom Jacoby, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Pecatonica Cemetery after cremation rites. Arrangements by KENNETH L. COUNTRYMAN FUNERAL HOME, 529 Washington St., Pecatonica, with visitation on Sunday from 3 until 4 p.m. at the funeral home. A memorial fund will be established in her memory.

Luethy, Rosemary
November 15, 1934 - November 21, 2002
JANESVILLE -- Mrs. Rosemary Luethy, age 68, of Janesville, died Thurs., Nov. 21, 2002, at home. She was born on Nov. 15, 1934, to Frank and Elsie (Brunhoeffer) Bundy in Beloit, WI. She attended Beloit Memorial High School. Mrs. Luethy was united in marriage to Frederick Luethy on Jan. 9, 1963, in Rockford. She was employed by the Freeman Shoe Co. for 22 years as a joiner. She also worked at the Rock County Health Care Center as a supervisor for the Housekeeping Dept.
Mrs. Luethy is survived by her husband, Frederick of Janesville; 3 children: Lonnie (Sue) Luethy of Beloit, David Krohnke of Janesville, and Greg (Melanie) Luethy of Janesville; 5 grandchildren: Michele Hazeltine of Janesville, Robert Hazeltine of Janesville, Adam Hazeltine of Janesville, Brook Luethy of Madison, and Christopher Luethy of Janesville; 2 sisters, Barbara Abbott of Black River Falls and Patricia Frederick of McHenry, IL; 2 special sisters-in-law, Marcy Bundy of Clinton, IA, and Jean Luethy of South Beloit, IL; special niece, Jeanne (Michael Henzl) Boschi; and several other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother; 2 brothers, David (Sue) Bundy and their son, Michael, and Frank "Jack" Bundy; 3 sisters: June Broderson, Mrs. A. J. "Bea" Boschi, and Laura Jean Barrett; and daughter-in-law, Cindy Krohnke.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Mon., Nov. 25, 2002, at the ROSMAN-UEHLING-KINZER FUNERAL HOME, Beloit, WI, with Rev. Dave Meding officiating. Burial will be in Shopiere Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday from 6 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

Matthews, Lavina Martha Ann
February 5, 1926 - November 27, 2002
JANESVILLE -- Lavina Martha Ann Matthews, age 76 of 703 E. Centerway, died Wed., Nov. 27, 2002, at home. She was born in Milton, WI on Feb. 5, 1926, the daughter of Otto and Alice (Stelter) Paul. She married Maurice G. "Matty" Matthews on Oct. 13, 1956, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church; he preceded her in death on Dec. 28, 1997. Lavina worked for Parker Pen, Borg Instruments and Oaks Manufacturing. She and her husband owned and operated the South Side Cheese Shop for several years. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, and she enjoyed working at the Janesville Flea Market, sewing, cooking, crafts and gardening.
Lavina is survived by her 3 daughters: Grace (Nels) Becker of Janesville, Paulette (Russell) Tinder of Orfordville and Viola (Roger) Helgesen of Green Bay; 2 sons, David (Tami) Matthews of Ft. Wayne, IN, and Charles (Pamela) Symonds, III of Whittier, CA; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 3 sisters: Elrena Heminover and Carmen Mattingly, both of Janesville, and Lenora Wenham of Little Chute, WI. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; 2 brothers, Eldon and Harlow Paul; and 3 sisters: Arvella Alverson, Viola Paul and Verna Nelson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Sat., Nov. 30, 2002, at ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, with Fr. Steve Umhoefer officiating. Entombment will be in Mt. Olivet Mausoleum. Friends may call on Friday from 6 until 8 p.m. at SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME.

McKearn, Gerald A. "Grub"
October 9, 1919 - November 24, 2002
DURAND, IL -- Gerald A. "Grub" McKearn, age 83, of Durand, IL, died at 9:20 a.m. Sun., Nov. 24, 2002, in Swedish American Hospital, Rockford, IL. He was born on Oct. 9, 1919, in Beloit, WI, son of Mr. and Mrs. John A. and Anna G. (Clark) McKearn. He lived over 50 years in Durand, IL. He was married to the former Dorothy Green in Beloit, WI, on Nov. 9, 1946. He retired as a plant superintendent at Greenlee's in Rockford, IL. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Marine Corp. in 2nd Airdrome Battalion 17th AA Battalion. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Durand, and taught CCD classes there. He was a former member of the Durand School Board for over 10 years. He graduated from Beloit High School.
Survivors include his sons: Jim (Anne) McKearn of Aurora, IL, Thomas (Patricia) McKearn of New Hope, PA, and John (Cassandra) McKearn of Glenco, MO; 9 grandchildren: Pamela, Kate, Nathan, Julie, Joseph, David, Marissa, Katharine, and Elizabeth; and 3 great-grandchildren: Channing, Ashley, and Aaron. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a daughter, Patricia; 3 brothers; and a sister.
A funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wed., Nov. 27, 2002, in ST. MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, with Msgr. Eric Barr officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Durand, IL. Prayers will be said on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at MCCORKLE FUNERAL HOME, 101 Main St., Durand, IL. Friends may call on Tuesday from 6 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home. A scripture service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Mihel, Joseph J.
March 18, 1918 - November 23, 2002
ELKHORN -- Joseph J. Mihel, age 84, of W3930 County Road NN, Elkhorn, died Sat., Nov. 23, 2002, at Lakeland Health Care Center. He was born on March 18, 1918, in Racine, WI, the son of Frank and Sophia Mihel. Joe was a salesman with Sexton Foods and Milwaukee Cheese Co. for over 40 years, retiring in 1999 due to ill health. Joe served as a Staff Sgt. in the U.S. Army from October, 1942, until February, 1946. He married the former Laurienne Traver in Elkhorn on May 29, 1964.
Joe is survived by his wife of 38 years, Laurienne; a daughter, Donna (Walter) Janke of Waukesha, WI; a son, Dale Mihel; 3 stepchildren: Bruce Wauters of Scottsdale, AZ, Sue Gibson of Elkhorn, and William (Judy) Wauters of Madison; and 8 grandsons. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers; and 3 sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Mon., Nov. 25, 2002 (TODAY), at HAASE-DERRICK-LOCKWOOD FUNERAL HOME, 730 N. Wisconsin St., Elkhorn, with Fr. Juilo Mirables officiating. Visitation will be at 5 p.m. until the time of services at the funeral home. Arrangements completed by HAASE-DERRICK-LOCKWOOD FUNERAL HOMES.

Oberley, James D.
October 7, 1917 - November 19, 2002
JANESVILLE -- James D. Oberley of 1421 Maple Ave., died Tues., Nov. 19, 2002, at Mercy Hospital. He was born in Westfield, IL, on Oct. 7, 1917, the son of Charles and Minerva (Miller) Oberley. He married Ruby Moore on April 19, 1941, in St. Charles, MO. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. James was employed by General Motors as a millwright, retiring in 1980. He was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Loyal Order of the Moose #197, UAW Local 95 retirees, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports, gardening, and fixing things. He especially enjoyed helping family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby; 2 children, Dr. Larry (Kathleen) Oberley of Iowa City, IA, and Dr. Terry (Edith) Oberley of Madison, WI; 4 grandchildren: Matthew (Khanh) and Alex, both of Madison, Rebecca and Christopher, both of Iowa City; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Fri., Nov. 22, 2002, at MT. ZION UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, with Rev. Deborah Thompson officiating. Entombment will be in Milton Lawns Memorial Park Mausoleum. Friends may call on Thursday from 6 until 8 p.m. at SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME. Memorials are preferred to Mt. Zion United Methodist Church or HospiceCare Inc.
