Laverne William "Bud" Scheel
Laverne William "Bud" Scheel passed away Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, in Menomonie at the Dunn County Health Care Center after a very long illness.
He was born June 14, 1914, in Menomonie, the second child of Herman and Bertha (Sager) Scheel. He grew up in Menomonie and married three times, having two daughters with Mary E. (Kottke) Scheel. He did a short time in the Army and traveled to Spain and England.
He returned to Menomonie and did a milk route for the Teegarden Cheese Factory. Then he helped build the dam at Menomonie and his construction career began. He helped build several dams in South Dakota, Arizona, Oregon and Washington. He retired in 1974 and returned to Wisconsin in 1977 where he enjoyed his gardening. He loved to grow tomatoes.
He is survived by his daughters, Sue Scheel and Lorna (Verne "Woody") Redwood; grandsons, Travis and Daniel Redwood of Everett, Wash.; a stepson, Eliot Johnson; granddaughter, Toni Johnson; great-grandson, "Little" Eliot Johnson; and nieces, nephews and cousins in Washington, Oregon and Wisconsin.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Bertha (Sager) Scheel, and two sisters, Viola Lemon and Hazel Godferson.
The family of Laverne "Bud" Scheel would like to say the following:
"We want to thank every one of you for your friendship to our father. As we all know, Bud could be a very trying person at times. We all loved Bud and did everything we could for him. Bud had been sick for several years. After his tracheotomy, the doctors said he could no longer live alone. He always told us how he did not want to stay at the health care center.
"We brought him out to Washington to be with his family, so we could take care of him. He was doing wonderfully out here. But unfortunately, he got very upset with us because he could not eat what he wanted. The doctors had him on a very strict diet and we made sure he followed it. The alternative of a colostomy was not acceptable. We all know how Bud loved to eat. It was truly amazing the amount of food he could consume. That was his greatest pleasure in life. To add to his displeasure, Woody was so sick with cancer. Bud was no longer the sole center of attention.
"He chose to go back to Wisconsin, thinking he would be able to live on his own and eat what he wanted when he wanted. But this dream did not come true. It was heartbreaking when he left, but we honored his right to. Friends and distant family members only see parts of what goes on in a family. Only people close know the whole truth. We have lost our father and grandfather. For this we grieve deeply. But it helps us to know that the people he cared most about were with him the last 16 months of his life.
"We want to take this time to thank Jerry Cinker and his family for all that they have done for Bud and us. You are a good man and a true friend to Bud until the end. We will never forget everything you did. Thank you so very much."
Memorial services were 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at the Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie with the Rev. Dave Whelan officiating. There was no visitation. Burial was in Peace Lutheran Cemetery in Menomonie.
