Arnold Jacob Johnson

“Arnie”

Beloit

Native Beloiter and business owner Arnold Jacob Johnson, age 86, died at Premier Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 following a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his mother and father Elias and Maren Johnson, his sisters Viola Johnson and Ruth Monnot, a brother Christopher Johnson, sons Christopher and Gregory and grandson Nicholas Johnson. He is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Betty, his son Andrew (Jeanie) of Janesville, a daughter Jennifer (Marvin) Hoekman of Beloit, and five grandchildren; Eric Johnson of Minneapolis, MN, Tamara (Dan) Meldrum of Beloit, Christopher McKinney (Amanda Engstrom) of Pennsylvania and Meghan McKinney (Kyle Slavin) of Beloit. He leaves behind two great grandchildren, Dalton Johnson of Beloit and Lacey May Meldrum of Beloit. Surviving are his brother Harold (Hardy) Johnson, sisters Rang Mowers, Sollie (Jack) Carter and Mary Hanaman, sister-in-law Lorraine “Boots” Johnson, all of Beloit as well as a sister-in-law and brother-in-law Lawrence and Gloria Woodman of Evansville Manor and sister-in-law Irene Martinson of Beloit. Many nieces and nephews will miss Uncle Arn as well as numerous dear and close friends.

Arnie married Betty Lee on March 18, 1944. They would ultimately raise four children and walk a path they never would have dreamed. Arnie Johnson was an active man. In his younger days he garnered the Beloit Jaycees Outstanding Man of the Year Award as well as becoming a Beloit Charter Member of the Toastmasters. He was president of Merrill School PTA and a charter member and president of Calvary Lutheran Church. He taught Sunday School and enjoyed the frequent Penguin Club dances with Betty. However, Arnie’s true energy was reserved for his dedication to handicapped children. With the birth of their second son, Christopher, and the knowledge of his severe handicaps, came life-long work on behalf of mentally challenged children and all those less fortunate. Arnie was president of the local chapter of the Association of Retarded Children (ARC), president of the state ARC, on the state board and organized the state ARC convention. He moved on to a position on a national AARC committee while also lending his efforts to fund drives to purchase and outfit a building to house the Beloit Center for Retarded and Handicapped Children.

Arnie was a Beloit booster without question. As the owner of Kitto the Printer he encouraged people to shop Beloit first. Many years later Arnie sold Kittos to his son, Gregory, who ran the business with Arnie as an employee for many years. Arnie Johnson was one of those stalwart, honest men with a dry, often corny sense of humor. He never missed an opportunity to tell a joke. That he happened to be of Norwegian heritage was of great substance to him and interest to others, but the true measure of Arnie was his quiet love for his family and his fierce and undying adoration for Betty. Arnie and Betty loved their weekend salvage expeditions to garage sales and antique stores. Arnie had a gift for refinishing and restoring cast-offs. Often family and friends were unable to tell new from old when he was done. The name Arnold means to fly high like an eagle. That’s what Arnie used to tell people. He did visit the eagle’s aerie when he was young although then his wings were made of metal and the rush of air past his face came from the propellers of his AT-11. When he landed permanently after WWII, the eagle remained his friend and slowly, over the years, he collected quite an aviary. The eagle and Arnie kept each other company. It’s not too much of a stretch to think of Arnie soaring with his namesake. Surely they will take our prayer to him.

Good bye, Dad. We’ll catch up with you soon.........

The family would like to thank several individuals and agencies for their long and dedicated care of Arnie. Dr. Shelly Johnson of Beloit Hospital. The entire staff of Beloit Memorial Hospital’s third floor as well as the housekeeping and cafeteria staff. The staff and doctors of the VA Hospital in Madison and the staff of the ICU of University Hospital Madison. The staff at Premier Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing, especially the Rehab Wing staff. The staff of Hospice Care Inc., especially Sarah, Shelly, the CNA’s and the volunteers who sat with Arnie. Special thanks go to Tracey, Donna and Richmond for their loving support and care of Arnie and Betty. In the last five years Arnie spent many, many hours, days and in some cases, months under the care of nurses, doctors, CNA’s, LPN’s and techs. We thank you for your many kindnesses, for your professionalism and for your willingness to extend your heart towards Arnie the patient and perhaps more, towards Arnie the man.

Arnie’s Funeral Service with Communion will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 13, 2009 in the SCHOENFELD-MARK FUNERAL HOME, 1000 Inman Parkway, Beloit with the Pastor Kurt Handrick officiating. Friends will be received on Friday, June 12, 2009 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home and again on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. All are invited to share a catered lunch to be served in the new Community Room. Interment and Full Military Burial Rites will take place on Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Eastlawn Cemetery. A memorial is being established in Arnie’s name.
