James Ralph Thomas
James Ralph Thomas, 86, of Homewood Addition, Mannington, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at Wishing Well Manor, Fairmont. He was born July 24, 1913, in Mannington, son of the late Joseph Ord and Margaret Ethel Myers Thomas. He was a member of Flat Run Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post 40, Mannington. He was a graduate of Mannington High School and retired from G.A. Brown Construction Co. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Florence McClain Thomas; an aunt, Hazel Toothman, of Barrackville; and a niece, Jean Evans, and nephew, Gary Thomas, both of Mannington. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Hugh Thomas and John R. Thomas, and a sister, Nancy Spadafore. Friends may call at Masters Funeral Home, Mannington, from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, with a Memorial service by American Legion Post 40 at 7:30 p.m. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, with the Rev. Judith Lively officiating. The Honor Guard of the Charles Milan Post 40 American Legion will conduct flag-folding services at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Farmington.

Rev. Regis J. Wasco
The Rev. Regis Jacob Wasco, 69, of Fairmont (Bellview community), died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at Fairmont General Hospital. He was born Sept. 26, 1930, in Bradenville, Pa., son of the late Jacob and Julia Varga Wasco. He was pastor of Word Faith Ministry Church. He retired from Sears as a service technician. He served with the U.S. Army in the Korean War. He enjoyed his church work and helping others. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Lois Ison Wasco; a son and spouse, William and Kathy Wasco, of Morgantown; three sisters, Marcella Orange and Bernadine Gison, both of Greensburg, Pa., and Madelyn Wasco, of Latrobe, Pa.; and two grandchildren, Matthew Wasco and Rachel Wasco. Friends may call at Frey Home for Funerals from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, until 11 a.m. service with the Rev. Tom Hewitt officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens, with flag-folding by local veterans organizations.

Thomas J. Chepko
Thomas J. Chepko, 69, of Daytona Beach, Fla., formerly of Morgantown, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, of cancer at Memorial Hospital, Ormond Beach, Fla. He was born July 26, 1930, in Morgantown, son of the late Steve and Mary Chepko. He graduated from St. Francis High School and West Virginia University. He lived in New Jersey and worked in New York City for Amstar Corp. He is survived by three sons and spouse, Thomas M. Chepko and James Chepko, both of South Amboy, N.J., and Scott and Jeannie Chepko, of Westfield, N.J.; two daughters and spouse, Tanya L. Chepko, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Tiffany and Carl Partozoti, of Cuddy, Pa.; a brother and spouse, Steve and Ida Chepko, of North Augusta, S.C.; a sister, Helen Bang, of Ocala, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Casey Jeannie Chepko and Ian Thomas Chepko, both of New Jersey. Volusia County (Fla.) Cremation Society will provide cremation. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Frankie Alice Bordo
Frankie Alice "Nanny" Bordo, 78, of May Street, Fairmont, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at home. She was born Aug. 18, 1921, in Enterprise, daughter of the late John Louis and Bessie Jane Bostic Craig. She was a homemaker and mother. She worked as a supervisor for the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Washington, D.C.; for Stroffers Restaurant, in Detroit; and at the Westinghouse Lamp Plant and as a waitress at Say Boys Restaurant, both in Fairmont. She was a member of Mount Sharon Free Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Shinnston High School. She was a former member of Fairmont Moose Club. Among her hobbies were bingo and playing cards. Friends and family will remember her as a pillar of love and support. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, John L. Bordo (they were married April 7, 1958); a daughter, Sue Ann Strawderman, of Fairmont; two grandchildren, Kelly Ann Strawderman and Roddy Lee Strawderman, both of Fairmont; nieces and nephews and their spouses John "Rick" Harter, Peggy Harter (Mrs. Tom) Rundle, and Rhuann Harter (Mrs. James) Cabral; and great-nieces and -nephews Jimmy Watson, Tonya Watson, Tommy Rundle, Todd Rundle, Paul Rundle, Shanna Harter and Stacie Harter, all of Fairmont. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Betty Lou Ridgley; a granddaughter, Kimmie Lee Strawderman; and a nephew, Greg Watson. Betty Jean Plymale
Betty Jean Plymale, 67, of Leander Drive, Glenn Allen, Va., died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, in Crump Manor Nursing Home, Glen Allen. She was born March 19, 1932, in Grafton, daughter of the late Harold and Thelma Board Griffith. She retired as a nurse from Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center and from Libbie Convalescent Home, Richmond, Va. She is survived by her husband, William Plymale; a daughter, Mrs. Jeffrey (Karen) Zavilla, of Grafton; a son and spouse, Robert and Debra Plymale, of Richmond; a grandson, Joey Zavilla; two sisters, Lula Smith, of Reedsville, and Jane Summers, of Grafton; and two brothers, Harold J. Griffith, of Danielson, Conn., and Robert Griffith, of Grafton. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Shuman. Jean Ballard McGuigan
Jean Ballard McGuigan, 71, of Bound Circle, Westover, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, after a long illness. She was born July 29, 1928, in Ivy Dale, daughter of the late Capt. S.C. and Opal Miller Ballard. She was a graduate of Hinton High School and attended West Virginia Business College. She retired from the Bank of Raleigh in Beckley. She was a lifelong supporter of the WVU Mountaineers and a member of Wesley United Church in Morgantown. She is survived by her husband, Jack McGuigan; a daughter, Jean Ann McGuigan, of Westover; and a son, Doug McGuigan, of Elkins. Graveside service at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens Cemetery will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, with Dr. Ken Ramsey officiating. McCulla Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jonnie Bonita Johnson
Jonnie Bonita Johnson, 76, of Grafton, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at her home. She was born Oct. 7, 1923, in Pennsboro, daughter of the late John Bunyan and Ora Mildred Lamm Montgomery. She was a member of Blueville United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Raymond H. Johnson; two sons and spouses, John Elliot and Shirley Johnson, of Baltimore, and Raymond Lee and Alice Johnson, of Rockingham, N.C.; three sisters, Syble M. Morgan, Betty L. Shaluta and Sara L. Strader, all of Grafton; five grandchildren, Bonita Irene Daiker, of Stafford, Va., Julie Ann Cook, of Grafton, Michelle Coble, of Rockingham, and John Elliott Johnson Jr. and Debra Wray, both of Baltimore; and eight great-grandchildren. Betty Connor Moore
Betty Connor Moore, 71, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, in Ogden, Utah. She was born Sept. 30, 1928, in Days Run, daughter of William Morgan Connor and Ethel Olson and wife of Emmons Lionel Moore. She touched all around her with her special light. She is survived by a son, Michael Moore, of Gig Harbor, Wash.; two daughters, Susan Barrett, of Lynchburg, Va., and Constance Shields, of Salt Lake City; two brothers, Albert Connor, of Days Run, and John Connor, of Masontown; two sisters, Bertha Nicholson, of Dunbar, Pa., and Judy Thomas, of Morgantown; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Graveside service at Utah Veterans Memorial Park, Camp Williams, Bluffdale, Utah, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 13. Evans & Early Mortuary, Salt Lake City, is in charge of arrangements.

Junior Stottlemire
Junior Stottlemire, 76, of Morgantown, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000. He was born March 13, 1923, in Marion County, son of the late Thomas Earl and Ethel Estep Stottlemire. He is survived by two sisters, Norma Jean Cordwell, of Osage, and Opal Lindsay, of Morgantown. Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William H. Bendgen
Word has been received of the death of William H. Bendgen, 79, of Baltimore, formerly of Morgantown, on Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999. He was a son of the late Daniel and Rose Bendgen. He is survived by two daughters, Mary Ann Rochfort, of Baltimore, and Claire Tric, of Alexandria, Va., and two sisters, Sister M. Amadeus, of Louisville, Ky., and Dorothy Dawson, of Denver. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Wilma, four brothers and three sisters. Burial was in Baltimore.

Virginia Wolverton McCoy
Virginia Wolverton McCoy, 83, of Morgan Drive, Morgantown, formerly of Waynesburg, Pa., died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at Monongalia General Hospital. She is also survived by a grandson, John Robert McCall. Hastings Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, with the Rev. John L. McDonald officiating. Martha Myers Nedrow
Martha J. Squires Myers Nedrow, 62, of Masontown, formerly of Brownton, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000. She was born March 10, 1937, in Barbour County, daughter of the late Odis and Bertha Bolyard Squires. She was a homemaker and a loving grandmother and loved flowers and birds. She enjoyed gardening. She was Protestant and attended Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, at Herring. She is survived by her husband, Glenn Nedrow; a son and spouse, Samuel L. "Pete" and Dora Myers, of Simpson; a daughter, Debbie DeSantis, of Arthurdale; a stepson and spouse, Rodney and Judy Nedrow, of Masontown; two brothers, Roy Squires, of Grafton, and Don Squires, of Newburg; three grandsons, Michael Myers, of Masontown, Mr. and Mrs. Jason DeSantis, of Arthurdale, and Samuel P. Myers, of Simpson; a granddaughter, Micala D. Myers, of Simpson; a great-grandson, Ashton Britton, of Arthurdale; six stepg randchildren and six stepgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Squires and Mary Squires Maxwell, and three brothers, Clifford, Charles and James Squires. Margaret A. Carr
Margaret A. Carr, 87, of Clarksburg, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at United Hospital Center. She was born Aug. 23, 1912, in Harrison County, daughter of the late Michael and Mae Saccoman Desist. She was a fitter for Stone & Thomas for 19 years and retired in 1991. She was a member of Catholic Daughters of America Court 334, Harrison County Senior Citizens, and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Clarksburg. She is survived by a daughter, Betty Carr Krambeck, of Cherry Hill, N.J.; a brother, Samuel Desist, of Forrest City, Pa.; three sisters, Concetta Decco and Marie Keener, both of Clarksburg, and Virginia DeCando, of Patterson, N.J.; three grandchildren, John F. Krambeck, of Mount Laurel, N.J., Valeri Carr Trout, of Earleville, Md., and Holly Virginia Krambeck, of Beijing, China; and a great-grandson, Stephen White, of Mount Laurel. She was also preceded in death in August 1988 by her husband, Robert J. Carr (they were married, Aug. 13, 1934); four brothers, William, Joseph, Dominick and Ralph Desist; and two sisters, Annette Desist and Pauline Pansy. Friends may call at Bartolo Funeral Home, 515 W. Dessie Toothman Hines
Dessie May Toothman Hines, 99, formerly of Westover, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, in Ravenswood, at the home of her daughter, Rosemary Hunt. She was born Jan. 3, 1901, in Grant Town, daughter of the late Larney E. and Charlotte Ann Shuman Toothman. She was the oldest living member of Riverside United Methodist Church. She was a lifelong member of Pythian Sisters and a member of Womens Christian Temperance Union. She was a Block Leader during World War II. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and friend. She is survived by two daughters, Rosemary C. Hunt, of Ravenswood, and Delma Christopher, of Westover; a son and spouse, Donald W. and Betty Donaldson Hines, of Palmerton, Pa.; a sister and spouse, Roy and Rose Radcliff, of Grant Town; 11 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Henry A. Hines; three sons, Ralph H. Hines, Daniel J. Hines and Richard L. Millie Phares
Millie Lucinda Phares, 80, of Rowlesburg, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, in Grafton. She was born Oct. 5, 1919, in Horseshoe Run, daughter of the late John and Emma Jane Simmons Worting. She was a nurse's aide at Hopemont State Hospital and a member of Erwin United Methodist Church. She is survived by three sons, Terry Worting, of Stephenson, Va., Edgar Flynn, of Grafton, and William Flynn, of Etam; a daughter, Pam Bucklew, of Erwin; a sister, Susie Sager, of Winchester, Va.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Edgar Flynn; her second husband, Donald Phares; a brother and two sisters. Dorothy Henry Moore
Dorothy Irene Henry Moore, 68, of Perry Avenue, Morgantown, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at home. She was born July 22, 1931, in Monongalia County, daughter of the late David Gilbert and Madeline Hacker Henry. She was Methodist and was an employee with Mylan Pharmaceuticals in Morgantown as a machine operator for more than 21 years. She is survived by a daughter and spouse, Cheri M. and Robert Bayles, of Morgantown; a son and spouse, James C. and Karen Moore, of Morgantown; three sisters, Deloris Kathleen Phillips, of Over Cheat, and Virginia Pauline Casteel and Betty Lou McIe, both of Westover; two brothers, Charles E. Henry, of Akron, Ohio, and Paul Richard Henry, of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; and three grandchildren, David Robert Moore, Stephanie Michelle Moore and Keith Allen Bayles. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Moore; two brothers, Hillis M. Henry and Gilbert E. Henry; and two sisters, her twin, Doris Jean Henry, and Anna Louise Russell. Joan Boord
Wanda Joan Boord, 70, of Burton, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at home. She was born June 26, 1929, at Earnshaw, daughter of the late Everett and Marian Robinson Rush. She taught for 27 years in Wetzel County schools before retiring. She was a member of Maranatha Bible Class and Earnshaw United Methodist Church, where she taught the adult Sunday School class for 32 years. She is survived by her husband, Wayne Boord; a son, Douglas Boord, of Burton; a daughter and spouse, Sharon and Charles Smith, of Wilmington, N.C.; a sister, Julia K. Rush, of Hundred; three brothers, Neil Rush, of Reading, Pa., Zane Rush, of Wilmington, and Ernest Rush, of Raleigh, N.C.; two granddaughters, Alexa and Anastasia Smith, of Wilmington, N.C.; and six nieces and nephews. Harvey O. VanHorn Jr.
Harvey O. VanHorn Jr., 83, of Morgan Manor, formerly of 510 Center St., Morgantown, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, after a long illness. He was born March 15, 1916, in Lost Creek, son of the late Harvey Sr. and Kathryn Stout VanHorn. He was a graduate of Lost Creek High School and Salem College. He was retired as an independent insurance agent. He was a member of Maranatha Assembly of God Church. He is survived by a daughter, Linda Kesner, of Weston; a son, Denis VanHorn, of Smithfield, Pa.; two sisters, Lela Gerstner, of Weston, and Leola Bond, of Harrisburg, Pa.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Opal M. VanHorn, two brothers and two sisters. He donated his body to medical science. A Memorial service will be held at a later date.

W. Hugh Phillips
W. Hugh Phillips, 88, formerly of Morgantown, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was born July 3, 1911, in a log cabin on his grandfather's farm in the Ridgedale Community (Bloody Run), son of the late Charles Goff and Linnie Mae Chipps Phillips. As a young man, he first worked in his uncle Willey Phillips' grocery, located on University Avenue at the current site of the Salvation Army. Later, he accepted a job with R.C. Raese in his grocery on Stewart Street. Several years later, he had saved enough money to buy his own store on Third Street -- Phillips Grocery, which he ran for 40 years. In 1945, he bought a farm in Stewartstown where he specialized in select beef cattle. He ran the farm until he moved to Scottsdale more than 50 years later. He was an active member of IOOF for more than 55 years and held the office of Grand Master. He served on the boards of directors of Wesley United Methodist Church and, for many years, the United Way. He had also served as buyer of meat products for the Rock Forge division of Meals-On-Wheels. He is survived by two sons and spouses, Hal and Martha Phillips, of Scottsdale, and Capt. Dick and Trish Phillips, of Morgantown; two daughters and spouses, Sally and Joe Medrick, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Nancy and Carl Taylor, of Jefferson City, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Bill Phillips, Greg Phillips, Tonia Medrick, Jennifer Medrick and Theresa Kolton; and a brother, Judge Ralph E. Phillips, of Ripley. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Sarah Thorniley Phillips; two sisters, Mildred Phillips and Virginia Emerson; and a brother, Charles Phillips. Susan Sayre Monroe
Susan Sayre Monroe, 98, of Rosewood Center, formerly of Maple Avenue, Grafton, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at Grafton City Hospital. She was born at Huffman Rocks, in Taylor county, April 1, 1901, daughter of the late Grant and Mary "Molly" Carson Sayre. She was educated in the Taylor County schools, having graduated from Grafton High School as salutatorian of the Class of 1920. That same year she was employed by the First National Bank of Grafton and remained in that employment as assistant cashier until her retirement in 1974. She was a charter member of the Quota Club of Grafton, serving as treasurer for a number of years; a former member of the Grafton Business and Professional Women's Club and the Woman's Club of Grafton. She was a past matron of Naomi Chapter 12, Order of the Eastern Star, and served as its secretary for many years. She held membership in the Trinity United Methodist Church of Grafton. She is survived by a daughter, Mary Virginia Monroe, of Grafton; a cousin, Kate Curran, of Parsons, and several nieces, including Betty Linn Hull, of Levittown, Pa., and Rebecca Linn Woodruff, of Seffner, Fla. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ray A. Monroe, whom she married June 1925; a brother, Thomas Paul Sayre; two brothers in infancy and a nephew, Roy Monroe Linn. Margaret V. Neason
Margaret V. Neason, 90, of West Francis Street, Grafton, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at Grafton City Hospital. She was born in Grafton, Jan. 7, 1910, daughter of the late John C. and Mollie Custer Posten. She was a bookkeeper for Musgroves store, secretary of Westover Cable Co. and retired as a seamstress for Heflins Clothing store. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. James (Mary Louise) Tucker, and Sharon R. Neason; a son, Louis D. Neason, all of Grafton; a granddaughter, Shelly Marie Neason; and a great-grandson, Kyle Neason, both of Jane Lew. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Louis D. Neason, on Jan. 27, 1959, whom she married July 27, 1936; two sisters, Muriel Posten and Genevieve Ewers; and brother, Carl Posten. George S. "Teener" Stewart
George S. "Teener" Stewart, 81, of East Reese Street, Oakland, Md., died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland. He was born Aug. 9, 1918, in Vindex, son of the late Harrison B. I and Sylvia L. Shirley Stewart. He retired as an office manager for A&P Stores Inc. for more than 41 years, serving in Oakland, Parsons and Kingwood stores. After retiring, he was manager and partner of Miller's Market from 1979-1982. He served nine consecutive terms on Oakland Town Council, where he chaired the street department committee. He was a founding father of Oakland Little League, serving as its president for many years, and coached the Moose team. He was an active member of Oakland Church of the Nazarene, serving on the church board. He served with the Army Air Corps in Europe during World War II, and was a member of Proctor Kildow American Legion Post 71, Oakland. He was an avid woodworker, he was known for his wooden crosses and Christian plaques, which he donated to many people and churches. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jennie M. Uphold Stewart; a son and spouse, Bradley A. "Brad" and Patsy K. Stewart, of Oakland; a granddaughter, Amanda K. Stewart; and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, the Rev. Leroy Stewart and Harrison B. "Bum" Stewart II. Friends may call at Stewart Funeral Home, 32 S. Second St., Oakland, from 7-9 p.m. Saturday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, and at Oakland Church of the Nazarene from 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17, until 11 a.m. service with the Revs. Arthur Evans and Richard Walker officiating. Angelo J. Daniels
Angelo J. Daniels, 84, of Lloyd Street, Fairmont, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at home. He was born in Fairmont, Sept. 25, 1915, son of the late Vincenzo and Camilla Marconi Daniels. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in France, where he was wounded following D-Day. He earned the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He retired from Sharon Steel Corp. with 33 years of service. He was a member of the VFW on Fairmont Avenue and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He was an avid bowler in earlier years, and enjoyed his garden. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Julia Ann LaCova Daniels, of Fairmont; two sons and spouses, James A. and Joyce Daniels, of White Hall, and John R. and Beverly A. Daniels, of Katy; a daughter and spouse, Catherine and John Arnett, of Pleasant Valley; two sisters and a spouse, Anna and Frank Retton, of Fairmont, and Louise Perry, of Fairmont; two brothers-in-law and a spouse, John and Frances LaCova, of Fairmont, and Johnny Allevato, of Fairmont; four grandchildren, John C. Daniels, Jennifer B. Daniels, Sand ra Sarsfield and Renee Huey; and three great-grandchildren, Joseph Sarsfield, Mary Beth Sarsfield and Michael Huey. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Antonio Daniels and Mick Daniels; and two sisters, Mae Guido and Teresa Allevato. Friends may call at Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from 7-9 p.m. Sunday and from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday. Service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, with the Rev. Casey Mahone officiating. Burial will follow in West Virginia National Cemetery, in Grafton. Full military rites will be performed by local veterans organizations in Grafton.
