VARELA, Joaquin (Quin) B., 87, of Tucson, passed away December 13, 1996. Preceded in death by daughter, Mary Hernandez. Survivors include wife, Virginia; daughter, Alice V. (Manuel) Padilla; sons, Joaquin Y. (Maria), George Y., Frank Y. (Armida), Tony Y. (Mary); sister, Esperanza Valencia; brother, Santos Varela; 25 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Monday, December 16, 1996, 4:00 p.m. to Mass time at Santa Rosa Church, 2015 N. Calle Central, with Rosary at 7:00 p.m.Mass will be offered Tuesday, 9:00 a.m., Santa Rosa Church. Interment Holy Hope Cemetery. Arrangements by TUCSON MORTUARY, INC.

CORLIES, William M., died December 12, 1996. Husband of Marie Corlies; father of Jerry (Christine) Corlies of Tucson, Michael (LaWand) Corlies of CO and Kenneth (Barbara) Corlies of CA. Preceded in death by son, William M. Corlies III, grandfather of Tegan, Tara and Kristin Corlies. Mr. Corlies retired after 30 years in the U.S.A.F. as a Chief Master Sergeant. He was serving in Pearl Harbor when attacked by the Japanese. He also served in the South Pacific battles, Korea, Hokaido Vietnam, and the Philippines where he saw action and proudly serviced his country. He was also the recipient of many citations and honors for his service. He was a member of the K. of C. St. Martin De Porres Council.Rosary will be recited 6:30 p.m. Sunday, December 15, 1996 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL. Mass will be offered Monday, December 16, at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church, 1375 S. Camino Seco. Entombment in Our Lady Of the Desert Mausoleum. Friends may call from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, December 15 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

HUERTA, Ernesto M., 73, died December 12, 1996. Arrangements by BRING’S MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 236 S. Scott.

LAMBERT, Donald Platt, of Tucson, passed away December 10, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Doreen; daughter, Jane Turner of McLean, Virginia; son, Fraser Lambert of Broomfield, Colorado; and brother, John Lambert of Toronto, Canada. Services will be private.

MURPHY, Leo F., died Wednesday, December 11, 1996, of cancer at the age of 69. A veteran, he moved to Tucson in 1980 when he retired from the telephone Co. He was widowed in 1987 by Muriel, his wife of 32 years. He worked in service community for over 36 years. He is survived by his two sons, Robert of Cataumet, MA and Kevin of Tucson, AZ; and three grandchildren, Joshua, Angela and Sarah. The world is a better place for having known and loved him. Services will be held at St. Cyril’s Parish Hall, at the corner of Pima and Swan from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., come early and be part of the solution. In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to the American Cancer Society or the Tucson Medical Center’s Hospice program.

ORR, Helen Ridinger, 87, a longtime resident of Tucson passed away December 10, 1996 after a brave battle with lung cancer. Born December 5th 1909 in Saunemin, Illinois. Survived by son, Michael (Kathi); grandchildren, Charles, Ursula, Margeaux and her son Andrew, her only great-grandchild and the joy of her heart. Also survived by her beloved cousin, Dave (Pat) Ridinger of Tucson; nephew, Richard (Carol) Ridinger of Florida and niece, Dolly (Robert) Fabian of Pennsylvania as well as numerous friends and relatives. Preceded in death by husband Edgar M. ‘Bud’ Orr; parents Charles and Clara Ridinger; and brother Charles ‘Bud’ Ridinger. A high school teacher in Illinois for many years Helen taught in Christopher, Dwight and Saunemin after graduating from the University of Illinois. She taught English, band, glee club and symphony, her students taking many awards through the years. She was an avid bridge player and accomplished artist. One of her many joys was her long affiliation with Delta Zeta Sorority. Her indomitable spirit grew stronger after blindness and several operations befell her in the last few years. Many thanks to her friends in Delta Zeta and the St. Joseph’s Hospital Low Vision Support Group, especially to Dan Krueger, coordinator for their friendship and kindness through the years. Thanks also to the caring personnel of Carondelet Hospice and Bluefield Adult Care Home … Grace, Joan Ann, Debby, Lillian, Mike, Kjersli, Pat, Esther and Drs. Raymond Moldow and Mark Blew. Thank you all for the love shown to my mother. Helen was born in the Christian Church Parsonage in Saunemin and found the Lord on her death bed. Thank you Jesus. A private family memorial will be held following cremation. RAYMOND, Michelle Marie, 19, of Tucson, Arizona, died December 10, 1996. She is survived by parents, David and Barbara Raymond; brothers, Ronald (Lynn), William (Heidi), Philip (Wendy); grandparents, Nina Raymond Tucker, Bruno (Lucy) Roitero; aunt, Deborah (Rick); uncle, Dan (Georgia); great aunts, great uncle and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins. Preceded in death by brother, John; grandparents, Robert G. Raymond, Gloria M. Roitero; uncle, Richard Glen Raymond. 'Michelle, you are the bright light in our eyes, the center of our world and the star of our universe. Your energy, love and caring will be in us all forever. Your light will never be extinguished. We Love You.' Friends may call 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, December 16, 1996 at the ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave. at Magee. SCHMUTZ, Ervin Marcell, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Range Management, School of Renewable Natural Resources, University of Arizona, passed away December 7, 1996 at the age of 81. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Velda Beames Schmutz; daughter, Annita D. (Thomas) Harlan; grandson, Thomas P. (Suzanne) Harlan; sister, Pauline (Elmer) Cox; and brother, DeWayne (Shirley) Schmutz and numerous other relatives. He was born in St. George, Utah, October 26, 1915, eldest son of the rancher, Marcell E. Schmutz and Annie Blake Schmutz. He did his undergraduate work at Dixie Junior College, St. George, Utah, and at Utah State University, Logan where he also completed a masters degree in range management. He worked 15 years in Texas for the U.S. Soil Conservation Service, then turned his attention to achieving a doctorate in range management from the University of Arizona, where he subsequently served for 25 years in teaching and research. He was a strong, lifetime advocate for land conservation and intelligent use of resources and authored many publications in those causes. He believed passionately in education and established several scholarships to help young people acquire college degrees. Those who would like to contribute to the Ervin and Marcell Schmutz Scholarship in Renewable Natural Resources, or to the Ervin and Velda Schmutz Scholarship in Soils and Water Science should write checks to the University of Arizona College of Agriculture and post them to the Development Office, College of Agriculture, Forbes Building, University of Arizona, Tucson 85721. STEVENS, Roy Lee, 87, longtime resident of Tucson, died Thursday, December 12, 1996. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jetta in 1994. He is survived by his son, Bobby (Lila) Stevens of Las Cruces, NM; daughters, Patsy (Byron) Whiffen of Rio Rancho, NM, Joy Hiscott of Tucson; grandchildren, Lisa Silva, Jeffrey Stevens, Michael Stevens all of Las Cruces, Larry Wiley, Rick Wiley, Kellie Chivers all of Tucson and 13 great-grandchildren. Mr. Stevens retired from L.B. Price Mercantile CO. in 1987. He was a member of New Testament Baptist Church. Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 16, 1996 at East Lawn Palms Cemetery, 5801 E. Grant Rd., with Dr. J.C. Joiner of New Testament Baptist Church officiating. Friends may call at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY one hour prior to the service. Memorial donations, in lieu of flowers may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1636 N. Swan Rd. WINTERS, Wayne, 81, of Tombstone, Arizona, died Saturday, December 7, 1996 at the Sierra Vista Community Hospital. Wayne was a newspaperman and small mining businessman. Services, Saturday, January 18, 1997 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Tombstone, AZ. Arrangements by Hatfield Funeral Home, Sierra Vista, AZ.

YODER, Florence Mae, 95, died December 11, 1996. Mother of Stanley (Molly) Yoder, Dudleyville, AZ and William G. (Rosemarie) Yoder of Green Valley; three grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren also survive. She was a Deputy County Assessor for Gila County also on the City Council of Winkleman. Former owner of Yoder’s Agency in Winkleman and past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations to the Diabetes Association, 40 N. Swan Suite 116, Tucson, AZ 85711. Memorial Services will be held at a later date. EVERILL, Delena S., 88, passed away December 11, 1996. Survived by husband, Sidney; son, Keith (Marty); daughters, Betty Pfrimmer and Janice (Brian) Roberts; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; sister, Oreva Kinney and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She worked as a registered nurse at the San Xavier Hospital and the DMAFB Hospital. She was a member of the Church of Christ on County Club Road. Memorial Service will be 12:00 noon Saturday, December 14, at the Church of Christ, 145 N. Country Club, with Hugh DeLong officiating. FISHER, Alice C. Loving mother and grandmother. Born on March 5, 1925 in New Bedford, Mass, she died in Tucson on December 10, 1996. She was a long time resident of Joliet, IL and spent the past 20 years inTucson. She was a member of The Daughters of The American Revolution and was a 17 year employee of the Pima County Health Department retiring in 1993. She was preceded in death by her parents, Milton Carroll and Ruth Kaseman and a daughter, Mary Ann Fisher. She is survived by two sisters, Ruth Renaut of Baltimore, MD and Sally (Bob) Ellis of Delta, CO; three sons, Lind (Melita) Fisher of Tucson, William (Kimberly) Fisher of Phoenix and Douglas (Jannette) Fisher of Gilbert; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive. There will be a Memorial Service at Streams in the Desert Lutheran Church, 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 14, 1996. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Lung Assn., 2819 E. Broadway, Tucson, AZ 85716 or American Heart Assn., 5325 E. Pima 85712. FLORES, Frank 'Pancho' 66, of Tucson, died December 10, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Nellie; niece, Ramona Wilson and her children, Bobby, Connie, Josie and Stephanie as well as many other nieces and nephews. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. on Friday, December 13, 1996 at St. Nicholas Center Chapel, 349 W. 31st. A Rosary will said at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be at 9:00 a.m., December 14, 1996 at St. Nicholas. GALLO, Joseph M., 75, passed away suddenly December 11, 1996. He is survived by his son, Joseph Gallo (Patty); daughters, Mary Terry and Dana Carlton; son-in-law, Gary Guerrero; grandchildren, Anthony, Jenee’, Matthew and Stephanie Terry, Amber Guerrero, Jessica and Lindsey Jankowski-Gallo; great-grandchildren, Tara and Johnathan Terry and many other family and friends. Mr. Gallo was preceded in death by his wife, Mary and daughter, JoAnn Guerrero. Joe was a life member of both the VFW Post #549 and the DAV AZ Chapter 2 and also BPO Elks Lodge #2532. Memorial Services will be held11:00 a.m., December 14, 1996 at VFW Post #549, 1884 S. Craycroft Rd. It was Joe’s wish that any memorial gifts be made to the Cancer, Lupus or Heart Foundation.

HASHIM, Mustapha. A jazz musician and music teacher who performed professionally under the name of Kirt Bradford with the famed Jimmy Lunceford in the 1940's, died December 10, 1996. He was 83. After Mr. Lunceford’s death, Mr. Hashim moved to San Diego where he married and began to raise a family. He worked at the Naval Air Station at Brown Field as a gardener and continued to study, teach, write and play music. In 1963 he and his family moved to Tucson, Arizona where he worked as an Accountant for Pima County. He retired in 1974 and moved to Guadalajara, Mexico where he taught music and performed under arts grants to increase the appreciation for jazz in Mexico. He returned to the U.S. in 1979 and lived and performed at various times until his death, in San Francisco, Honolulu and Tucson. He is survived by his children, daughters, Pamela Garcia and Sidney Eng of Tucson, Arizona, Stephanie Daniel of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Diana Cunningham of Oakland, CA and Cheryl Ward of San Francisco, CA; sons, Charles Hashim of San Pablo, CA and Hashim Mustapha of Green Valley, Arizona, as well as seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Hashim was preceded in death by his wife, Helene R. Hashim. Memorial Services will be held at South Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses located at 25 E. District Street, Tucson, AZ. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Mustapha Hashim Music Scholarship Fund in care of 1541 S. Desert Crest Drive, Tucson, AZ 85713.

MORGAN, Frances Donahue, 70, died December 10, 1996. Survived by her children, Barbara (Ray) Armstrong, Arthur (Christine) Morgan, Audrey (John) Finley and Aleta (Dan) Bloch; nine grandchildren, Richard and Audrey Armstrong, Erin, Daniel and Tyler Morgan, Jessica and Alex Finley, Elias and Thomas Bloch. Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Sanford H. Morgan in 1986. Private family Funeral Services and burial were held by EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY. Contributions may be made in the memory of Frances Morgan to the Reid Park Zoo, 1100 Randolph Way Tucson, AZ 85716.
