NEHRING, Walter Kenneth. In memory of Walter Kenneth Nehring, born November 25, 1920 in Gary, IN, passed away December 10, 1996. Memorial service 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 14, 1996, Community Hall, 3810 N. Romero Rd., Rev. Daniel J. Valasakos officiating. Remembrances may be made to Southern Arizona Hospice, Memorial Foundation, 4330 N. Campbell #256, Tucson, AZ 85718

ORR, Helen Ridinger, 87, a longtime resident of Tucson passed away December 10, 1996 after a brave battle with lung cancer. Born December 5th 1909 in Saunemin, Illinois. Survived by son Michael (Kathi); grandchildren Charles, Ursula, Margeaux and her son Andrew, her only great-grandchild and the joy of her heart. Also survived by her beloved cousin Dave (Pat) Ridinger of Tucson; nephew Richard (Carol) Ridinger of Florida and niece Dolly (Robert) Fabian of Pennsylvania as well as numerous friends and relatives. Preceded in death by husband Edgar M. ‘Bud’ Orr, parents Charles and Clara Ridinger. A high school teacher in Illinois for many years, Helen taught in Christopher, Dwight and Saunemin after graduating from the University of Illinois. She taught English, band, glee club and symphony, her students taking many awards through the years. She was an avid bridge player and accomplished artist. One of her many joys was her long affiliation with Delta Zeta Sorority. Her indomitable spirit grew stronger after blindness and several operations befell her in the last few years. Many thanks to her friends in Delta Zeta and the St. Joseph’s Hospital Low Vision Support Group, especially to Dan Krueger, coordinator for their friendship and kindness through the years. Thanks also to the caring personnel of Carondelet Hospice and Bluefield Adult Care Home…Grace, Joan Ann, Debby, Lillian, Mike, Kjersli, Pat, Ester and Drs. Raymond Moldow and Mark Blew. Thank you all for the love shown to my mother. Helen was born in the Christian Church Parsonage in Saunemin and found the Lord on her death bed. Thank you Jesus. A private family memorial will be held following cremation. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph’s Low Vision Support Group c/o Dan Krueger, Carondelet Foundation, P.O. 13170, Tucson, AZ 85755.

PARE’, Madeline Ferrin, 94, of Tucson, Arizona, died Wednesday, December 11, 1996. Was born and raised in Penacooke, NH moved to Chicago, Illinois where she lived for 20 years. She moved to Tucson with her three children and extended family, Margaret Brown Moore in 1948. Madeline graduated Cum Laude from the U of A. She taught History at Sunnyside High School where she was the head of the department. She was the author of the Arizona History Textbook, Pageant. She is survived by two children, David Ferrin Pare’ of San Diego, California, Margaret Pare’ Forgach of Tucson, Arizona and a brother, Steven Ferrin; 22 grandchildren of Chicago; many many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation, Sunday, December 15, 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be held at Holy Hope Cemetery Mausoleum Monday, December 16, at 1:00 p.m. with Interment to follow. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pima Federal Credit Union, P.O. Box 50267, Tucson, Arizona 85703 in the name of Madeline Ferrin Pare’. SCHMUTZ, Ervin Marcell, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Range Management, School of Renewable Natural Resources, University of Arizona, passed away December 7, 1996 at the age of 81. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Velda Beames Schmutz; daughter, Anita D. (Thomas) Harlan; grandson, Thomas P. (Suzanne) Harlan; sister, Pauline (Elmer) Cox; and brother, DeWayne (Shirley) Schmutz and numerous other relatives. He was born in St. George, Utah, October 26, 1915, eldest son of the rancher, Marcell E. Schmutz and Annie Blake Schmutz. He did his undergraduate work at Dixie Junior College, St. George, Utah, and at Utah State University, Logan, where he also completed a masters degree in range management. He worked 15 years in Texas for the U.S. Soil Conservation Service, then turned his attention to achieving a doctorate in range management from the University of Arizona, where he subsequently served for 25 years in teaching and research. He was a strong, lifetime advocate for land conservation and intelligent use of resources and authored many publications in those causes. He believed passionately in education and established several scholarships to help young people acquire college degrees. Those who would like to contribute to the Ervin and Marcell Schmutz Scholarship in Renewable Natural Resources, or to the Ervin and Velda Schmutz Scholarship in Soils and Water Science should write checks to the University of Arizona College of Agriculture and post them to the Development Office, College of Agriculture, Forbes Building, University of Arizona, Tucson 85721. SMITH, Jenean (Hestor) Lorraine; 94, of Tucson, died Wednesday, December 11, 1996. Survived by son, Richard W.(Joanna); grandson, Daniel and great-granddaughter Darienne. Preceded in death by husband, Richard and grandson, David. Mrs. Smith was a long time member of VFW Auxillary Post #549. Visitation to be Friday, December 13 from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY, 5401 South Park Avenue. STONER, Carolyn Walker, 46, died December 11, 1996. Daughter, of Reid E. Walker; mother of Shelby Walker, John Saturley and Tomas Stoner all of Tucson. Survived by many other relatives and friends. Carolyn attended Amphi High School and the U of A. the family wishes to express their deepest, heartfelt appreciation for the kindness and love to her friends and loved Ones. TOOLEY, Harold W., 84, of Tucson, passed away December 12, 1996. Survived by wife, Vera of Tucson; son, Russell Tooley of WI; brother, George Tooley of WI; sister, Jeanette Heschke of Casa Grande; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Harold was a well known auto mechanic in Tucson. Graveside Service, Saturday, 3:00 P.M., Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY & CEMETERY, N. Oracle and W. Miracle Mile.

DONOVAN, Suzanne R., 95, of Tucson, died December 7, 1996. Mother of Judy Donovan and Gloria Azzarello of Tucson, Jack Donovan, of South Bend, IN; seven grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; a niece and four nephews. Born September 10, 1901 in Chicago, she lived there all her life until moving to Tucson 18 years ago. Her husband H. George Donovan died in 1977. For several years she was active in Holy Family Parish activities. Graveside ceremonies will be at Holy Hope Cemetery Mausoleum at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 14. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church. Mass in her memory will be celebrated there at 7:00 a.m. Sunday, January 5. Arrangements by Tucson Mortuary.

FISHER, Alice C. Loving mother and grandmother. Born on March 5, 1925 in New Bedford, Mass, she died in Tucson on December 10, 1996. She was a long time resident of Joliet, IL and spent the past 20 years in Tucson. She was a member of The Daughters of The American Revolution and was a 17 year employee of the Pima County Health Department retiring in 1993. She was preceded in death by her parents, Milton Carroll and Ruth Kaseman and a daughter, Mary Ann Fisher. She is survived by two sisters, Ruth Renaut of Baltimore, MD and Sally (Bob) Ellis of Delta, CO; three sons, Lind (Melita) Fisher of Tucson, William (Kimberly) Fisher of Phoenix and Douglas (Jannette) Fisher of Gilbert; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive. There will be a Memorial Service at Streams in the Desert Lutheran Church, 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 14, 1996. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Lung Assn., 2819 E. Broadway, Tucson, AZ 85716 or American Heart Assn., 5325 E. Pima 85712. MARTS, Lee T., 94, of Sierra Vista, formerly of Tucson, died December 10, 1996.Survived by son and daughter-in-law, David L. and Nellie Marts of Sierra Vista; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Martinek of PA; brother, Edward J. Marts of PA. Visitation will be held Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd., where Funeral Services will be held at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, December 14. Burial will follow in East Lawn Palms.

MOORE, Richard, 50, passed away suddenly on December 8, 1996. He is survived by wife, Georgia; son, Scott; daughter, Alissa; stepson, Gabe; stepdaughter, Jessie all of Flagstaff; mother, Laura Perkins of Tucson; sister, JoAnn and her husband, Jeff Grover of CA; brother, Sheridan Moore of Tucson. Richard has resided in the Flagstaff area since 1980. Richard worked as a rehabilitation counselor and a carpenter. He loved music and played guitar in a musical group known as the Earth Tones. Richard was dearly loved and will be missed greatly. Memorial Service will be held at St. Francis in the Foothills River and Swan at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, December 12, 1996. SCHACHOW, Wasily, 90, died December 11, 1996. Survived by his wife, Maria; son, Wasilij (Beatrice) Shachov; daughter, Victoria Shdanov; six-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Mr. Schachow, born in Russia, came to the United States, from Germany, in 1950 as a displaced person. He served in the Slavic Baptist Church in Trenton, NJ as a Lay Minister for over 40 years. STEPP, Louis W. Born April 13, 1910, journeyed to a better place December 9, 1996. Native of Pennsylvania, spent the last 15 years in Tucson. He was a carpenter by trade working many years in California in the Ice Capades. Father of nine; grandfather of 23; and great-grandfather to 18, loved by many along the way and will be greatly missed. No services. Friends may contribute to Toys for Tots.

STERTZ, Robert A. Passed away December 10, 1996, after a brave battle with brain cancer. Born in Milwaukee, WI, August 21, Bob grew up in Marshfield, WI, and was a 1967 graduate of Columbus High School, a graduate of the University of WI-Eau Claire in Journalism and Political Science, and a graduate of the University of Arizona in Accounting. He was the owner of Business Information Systems, an accounting firm in Tucson for the past 10 years, and Bob’s mother will continue to service their faithful clients in his absence. Bob will be deeply missed by his bible study group and dear friends and family. He generously gave of his time, spreading the Lord’s Word. Bob is survived by his loving parents, Leroy and Jeanette Stertz of Green Valley, AZ; his sister, Lynda Stertz and nephew Ryan; brother, Richard Stertz and sister-in-law, Debbie; and nieces, Chelsea and Morgan (all of Tucson). Memorial Services will be held Saturday, December 14, 10:00 a.m. at Casas Adobes Baptist Church Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the American Bible Society, 1865 Broadway, New York, NY, 10023.
