Kristen (Brant) Hawkins
On May 4, 2005, Kristen Marie (Brant) Hawkins passed away in Benzie County, MI. Kris was born on September 21, 1957, in Fairborn, OH and was baptized at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Elgin, IL.
She attended Elgin schools and graduated from Larkin High School. She was a 1979 graduate of DePauw University with a double major in Science and Elementary Education. She married Steven J. Hawkins of Benzonia MI in 1985, and they celebrated their 20th anniversary this February. Kristen had a special love for northern Michigan. She was inspired by her good friends Jim and Mollie Rogers to contribute to the Crystal Lake area by pursuing a career as a builder of fine homes. She enjoyed gardening, baking, nature and the art of woodworking. She excelled in all of these interests. Kristen was a member of First Church of Christ Scientist and practiced her faith with everyone she knew.
Kristen is survived by her husband, Steve Hawkins of Benzonia; her parents, Richard and Helen Brant of Leland, MI; two brothers, Eric (Kim) Brant of Leland, MI and Mark (Tracy) Brant of Bay Village, OH; nephews Andrew and Matthew Brant; two cousins and an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Alan Brant.
Kristen was preceded in death by her grandparents, Alice and Al Brant, formerly of the Elgin Association of Commerce.
Memorial donations may be given to an organization of your choice.
Services were held in Frankfort, MI.
Kristen was a special gift given to us for a little while.

Casey Detry
Casey Detry passed away in Santa Rosa, CA on April 28, 2005. He was 71 years old. He was born in Elgin, IL and was a proud graduate of the University of Illinois.
Casey is survived by his loving partner of 22 years, Trica Mark; and his daughter and son-in-law, Jody and Arthur Hoffman; two grandchildren, Asher and Chessy; and three step-daughters, Casandra Silverek, Sarah Mark and Melissa Perez.
He was a stockbroker for 20 years and enjoyed traveling the world. He was a sports enthusiast and an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and Green Bay Packers. Casey was able to rest in peace knowing his "Fighting Illini" made it to the finals this season.

Jean K. Schulz
Jean K. Schulz, 66 of Elgin, formerly of Algonquin, passed away Thursday, May 12, in her home. She was born September 8, 1938 in Elgin, the daughter of Clarence and Christine Soennichsen Franke.
She had been a resident of Algonquin for most of her life before moving to South Elgin in 1979 and then Elgin in 1992. She had been employed by School District 300 as a school teacher at Carpentersville Middle School before retiring in 1995. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Algonquin. She was also a member of IEA and NEA.
Surviving are her husband, Frederic E. Schulz whom she married on June 30, 1962; two sisters, Cheri Bundschuh of Algonquin and Barbara (Charles) Parker of Charleston, IL; a brother, Clarence "Bus" (Claire) Franke of Temucula, CA and several neices and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral Service will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 16 at Wait Ross Allanson Funeral & Cremation Services Chapel, 201 S. Main St., Algonquin with Rev. William Stroup officiating. Burial will be in Algonquin cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the LAM Foundation or St. John's Lutheran Church in Algonquin.

Modesta Cabezudo
Modesta Cabezudo, 73, of Elgin passed away Friday, May 14, 2004 in her home. She was born on May 8, 1931 in Jayuya, Puerto Rico and was the daughter of Hermogenes and Ermelinda Rodriguez Ruiz. Resident of Elgin since 1968 and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Elgin.
She is survived by her loving husband, Agustin Cabezudo Sr. of Elgin; three children, Agustin, Rene' (Lourdes) and Eddy Cabezudo all of Elgin; two grandchildren Tatianna and Adan Cabezudo; three brothers, Miguel, Santana and Juan Ruiz; a sister, Rosa Rodriguez; and many nieces and nephews, family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Juana Maria and Antonia.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10 AM on Monday, May 17, 2004 in the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Elgin with Fr. Hector Moreno officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be held on Sunday in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin from 4 to 8 PM and on Monday from 9 AM until time of services in the church. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Harold E. Coats
Harold E. Coats, 67, Sarasota, FL. died May 5, 2004.
He was born June 23, 1936, in Batesville, Ark., the son of Cyrus and Ida Coats and came to Sarasota in 1984 from Elgin, IL. He was a watchmaker and owner of the North American Supply Co. He was a member of American Watchmakers Institute and Concordia Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Marlene and a sister-in-law Judy Dennis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister Ida Kathryn.
Memorial service was held at 7:00 PM Wednesday, May 12 at Concordia Lutheran Church in Sarasota with the Rev. Robert Hinz officiating. Cremation is being Handled by the National Cremation Society, Sarasota Branch.
Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society or to a favorite charity.

Gary John Jurczak
Gary John Jurczak, 55, passed away May 2, 2004 in Phoenix, AZ. He was a native of Carpentersville, IL and an 18-year resident of Honolulu, HI. He had recently moved to Phoenix, AZ to be close to family due to his failing health. He had worked for many years at Eagle Food located in the Meadowdale Shopping Center in Carpentersville, both before and after service in the Navy. He had retired early from an administrative civilian position with the Army in Hawaii.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Cathy Jurczak, and survived by brother, William Jurczak (Debby); sisters, Debbie Carroll (Terry) and Paulette Deibert (Gary); nephew and niece Adam and Diana Jurczak and nieces, Courtney and Brittany Carroll. Private services were held in Scottsdale, AZ.

Elizabeth Ganow
Elizabeth Ganow, 81, of South Elgin, passed away, Friday, May 13, 2005 in Tower Hill Nursing Center. She was born March 15, 1924 in Dundee, IL, the daughter of Arthur L. Esther (Ganchow) Ganow.
Survivors include her brothers, Kenny (Wilma) Ganow of Elgin, and Ronald Ganow of South Elgin; sister-in-law, Geraldine Ganow of South Elgin; and several nieces and nephews.
preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Walter Ganow.
Graveside services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, May 17, 2005 in Dundee Township East cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM, until 11:30 AM on Tuesday morning in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin.

Aileen L. Houdek
Aileen L. Houdek, 91, of Elgin, former many year resident of Haegers Bend, Algonquin, died Friday, May 13, 2005 at the Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin. She was born on March 29, 1914 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Henry and Clara (nee Banger) Robarts. She was a 60 year resident of the Algonquin-Elgin areas and a member of the Light Of Christ Lutheran Church in Algonquin.
She is survived by her loving daughters, Carol (Wayne) Stanchina of Lake in The Hills and Susan (John) Lukasik of Elgin; six grandchildren, Tina (George) Saldivar, Kelsey (Lena) Kwicizinski, Beth Keding, Christopher Lukasik, Mary (Ken) Cutroni and John (Gina) Lukasik; five great-grandchildren, Alexia and Benjamin Saldivar, Max, Jake and Kevin Keding; and a sister, Jane Kyle of Colorado.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband of 68 years, Robert J. Houdek on June 14, 2003; her brother, Henry Robarts, Jr.; and her sisters, Lillian Price and Alvina Kobs.
Family and friends will meet for funeral services on Tuesday at 10:30 AM in the Light Of Christ Lutheran Church, 100 Hanson Road in Algonquin. The Revs. Sandra J. Bentz and Kendall Koenig will officiate. Burial will follow in the Algonquin cemetery, Algonquin. Ethel P. Kline
Ethel P. Kline, 89, of Elgin, passed away Thursday, May 12, 2005 in Provena Pineview Nursing Center in St. Charles. She was born November 27, 1915 in Chicago, IL the daughter of Elmer and Callie (Hickman) Pahnke.
Ethtel attended Stephens College, graduated from Rockford College and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. She was a past member of the Elgin Jr. Women's Club, Jr. Service Board, Elgin Day Care Center. She was also a founding and active member of the House and Garden Club and an active volunteer at St. Joseph Hospital.
Survivors include sons, Willard (Mary Jo) Fedou of Louisville, KY, and Jeffrey (Cynthia) Kline of Huntley; grandchildren, Nicole McLean, Elizabeth Hoban, Robert Fedou, Rachel and Kevin Kline; great-grandchildren, Jake Hoban and Will McLean.
preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Willard Fedou; and her second husband, LaVerne Kline on December 14, 2000.
Funeral Services will be held 10:00 AM on Wednesday, May 18, 2005 in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin, with Rev. Steve Srock officiating. Burial will follow in Bluff City cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4:00-8:00 PM on Tuesday in the funeral home.

Richard K. Mattocks
Dick Mattocks, born and raised in Elgin, Illinois, and a long-time Palmetto, Florida resident, passed away in Denver, Colorado, February 27, 2005. He was 83.
Dick retired from Minnesota Rubber Company, Minneapolis, and moved to Florida with his wife, Grace, in 1980.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Grace; three daughters, Jill Swenson, Joy Rishavy and Jan Feldmann; six grandchildren, K. Mattocks, Brett and Parker (Swenson), Nicholas, Ryan and Carly (Feldmann); and niece, Judi Connors. He will always be remembered and loved.

Margaret Haley Schori
Margaret Haley Schori, 91, passed away on Tuesday, May 10, 2005, at her home at Village Green in East Dundee, IL. Margaret was born on a farm east of Buda, IL, on September 7, 1913, to Scott F. and Mary Elizabeth (Webb) Haley. She graduated from Buda High School and Illinois State Normal College and taught in country schools in the 1930's. She married Ward K. Schori in January of 1936, in Tiskilwa, IL. The Schori family moved from Tiskilwa to Ketchikan, AK, in 1946. The family returned to Illinois and moved to Evanston in 1948, where they lived for over 50 years. Margaret and Ward worked side-by-side as the owners of the Schori Press. They were members of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church and their Forty Plus Club. She was active in the Evanston Women's Republican Organization. She enjoyed family gatherings, celebrating holidays, and was delighted when loved ones and friends gathered for her wonderful meals.
She is survived by her six children, Ellen (Don) Boscher, Richard (Katharine) Schori, Mary (John) Dammann, Ruth (Sam) Carrell, John (Barbara) Schori, and Carl Schori; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Visitation Monday, May 16, 12:00 (noon) to 2:00 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 516 Washington, West Dundee, IL 60118, with funeral services at 2:00 p.m., reception following.
A memorial service and interment will be at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 2120 Lincoln, Evanston, IL 60201, at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 17, 2005. Both services will be officiated by daughter-in-law, the Rt. Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, Espicopal Bishop of Nevada.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to Hospice of Northeastern Illinois, 410 South Hager Ave., Barrington, IL 60010 or St. Matthew's Episcopal Church. Arrangements by the Miller Funeral Home.

Joseph Cerasa Sr.
Joseph Cerasa Sr., 92, passed away May 12, 2004 in the Willows Health Center, Rockford, IL. He was born on January 13, 1912 in Vellalunga, Sicily and was the son of Phillip and Mary (Zuzze) Cerasa. Joseph immigrated to this country at eight years old with his parents and originally settled in Batavia, New York. The family moved to Elgin in 1930. He served in World War II as a Tank Mechanic in the 745th Tank Battalion, which was attached to the First Infantry Division "Big Red 1", of the U.S. Army and participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France and many other campaigns throughout the European Theater of Operations. After returning home from the war, Joseph attended Barber College under the GI Bill, and became a licensed barber, and in a short time opened his own barber shop on Walnut Ave, in Elgin. He worked at the trade until his retirement. Joseph was a life member of the VFW and Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #799, as well as the American Legion Post #57.
Survivors include two sons, Joseph (Patricia) Cerasa Jr. of Byron, IL, and Peter V. (Sue) Cerasa of Leech Lake, MN; one daughter, Mary Jane McGinley of Aurora, IL; two brothers, John Cerasa of Rhinelander, WI and Tony (Gladys) Ceresa of West Salem, WI; one sister, Christine Izatt of Elgin, IL; four grandchildren, Mark J. (Julie) Cerasa of Byron, IL, Daniel W. (Melody) Cerasa of Crystal Lake, IL, Kim Bartow of Batavia, IL, and Michael McGinley of Oceanside, CA; step-son, Paul Mowry of Walker, MN; step-grandson, Trey (Kim) Ecckels; five great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.
preceded in death by his parents, Phillip and Mary Cerasa; four brothers, Charles, Sam, Paul, and in infancy, Phillip Jr.; daughter-in-law, Sonja M. (Joseph) Cerasa; and his former wife, Phyllis (Danielson) Cerasa.
Burial with Honors will be private in the Abraham Lincoln National cemetery, Elwood, IL. Visitation will be held Monday in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin from 5-9:00 PM with Prayers for the Christian Wake recited at 7:00 PM with Rev. Andrew Plesa officiating. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
