Garcia Baden
Aubrey Garcia Baden Sr., 88, a lifelong resident of Annapolis, died Feb. 8, 2001 at the Annapolis Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
For 35 years Mr. Baden was a postman for the Postal Service in Annapolis, retiring in 1973. He was a lifelong friend to the residents he served on mail routes.
Born on Nov. 15, 1912, he was educated at the former Stanton School and graduated from high school in Baltimore. He served in the Army's 4204 Quartermaster Corps in Holland, France, Germany and Austria in 1944 and 1945.
He was a lifelong member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church, holding several positions at the church, including many years as bookkeeper. His favorite activities were playing cards, solving crossword puzzles and listening to music, particularly jazz. He also loved helping others.
In 1935 he married Helen Sophronia Banks, who died in 1984.
Surviving are one son, Aubrey G. Baden Jr. of Riva; one daughter, Angela D. Baden of Washington, D.C.; one brother, Harold Baden, and two sisters, Constance Arthur and Kathleen Brashears, all of Annapolis; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
He was the brother of the late Thomas R., Walter, Roswell, Goldzy, Delmar and Gloria Baden and Dorine Russell.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, with a Christian wake at 10 a.m. and a funeral service at 11 a.m. at St. Philip's Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Annapolis Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Philip's Episcopal Church Family Life Center, 730 Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD 21401.

Ernest Beath
Ernest Ballard Beath Sr., 80, of Cambridge, formerly of Annapolis, died at home Feb. 8, 2001 after a lengthy illness.
Born on Feb. 20, 1920, in Kaiying, China, he was the son of missionary parents Sterling and Eilleen Ballard Beath of Evansville, Wis.
In 1937 he graduated from Shanghai American School and came to the United States, where he graduated from the University of Southern California and the University of Colorado with a Japanese languages arts degree.
Mr. Beath was a World War II Navy Reserve veteran, having served with Adms. "Jacko" Clark, Chester Nimitz and John McCain in the Pacific on various aircraft carriers as a Japanese interpreter. Honorably discharged as a lieutenant, he received two Bronze Stars, one Gold Star and various medals and citations.
After the war he joined the National Security Agency. In 1974 he retired as a research analyst and moved to Town Point in Cambridge, where he restored his farm. In 1989 he moved to Bonnie Brook in Cambridge.
He was a member of Antioch United Methodist Church in Town Point and the Phoenix Society of the National Security Agency.
In his earlier years he was an avid sailor. For many years he was active in the Project Read Program of the Dorchester County Public Library, where he taught English to Chinese immigrants.
Surviving are his wife, Eleanor Poteat Beath, whom he married on March 14, 1945; six children, Katherine Beath Godsey of Fountain Inn, S.C., Nida Beath Petachenko of Virginia Beach, Va., Ernest Beath Jr. of Cambridge, John Beath of Tyaskin in Wicomico County, James "Jimmy" Beath of Upperco in Baltimore County and Richard "Ricky" Beath of St. Paul, Minn.; a brother, Sterling S. Beath of Evansville, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grand-children.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Antioch United Methodist Church, Town Point Road, Cambridge. Inurnment will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery. Arrangements are by Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home in Cambridge.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church in care of Susan Meredith, 5413 Town Point Road, Cambridge, MD 21613, or Habitat for Humanity, 350 N. Aurora St., Easton, MD 21601.

Lilias Galvin
Lilias Bower "Lil" Galvin, 78, of Annapolis, died Feb. 9, 2001 at North Arundel Hospital after a brief illness.
Born Sept. 30, 1922, in Mobile, Ala., Mrs. Galvin graduated in 1939 from Murphy High School. She attended the Alabama College for Women, now the University of Montevallo.
She worked as a legal secretary in the law offices of Richard Wright and his late father, John Wright, in Annapolis. Previously she worked at Tilghman's Jewelers.
Mrs. Galvin was a member of the Book Lovers Club and Calvary United Methodist Church. She loved to read, was an avid gardener and enjoyed socializing with her bridge and gourmet cooking friends.
Her first husband, Harry C. Bower Jr., died on May 19, 1966.
She was married on Dec. 4, 1976, to Ormond R. Galvin.
Also surviving are a son, Harry C. Bower III of Richmond, Va.; a daughter, Polly Bower Mitchell of Severna Park; three stepsons, Ormond T. Galvin of Corvallis, Ore., Michael L. Galvin of Greeley, Colo., and Ralph B. Galvin of Baltimore; a stepdaughter, Mary K. Kresslein of Middletown; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. tomorrow at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St. Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Calvary United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

John Harbaugh
John Raymond Harbaugh, 89, a resident of St. Margarets for 50 years, died Feb. 8, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. The cause of death is unavailable.
Mr. Harbaugh was born July 27, 1911, in Baltimore. He retired after 32 years at the Naval Experimental Station power plant.
He was a member of St. Margaret's Episcopal Church for many years. His interests included working in the yard and around the house.
His wife, Irene Wales Corner Harbaugh, died in 1973.
Surviving are a daughter, Eleanor Harbaugh Poole of Arnold; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by three sisters.
Visitation will be from 1 to 3 and 6 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St., where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in St. Margaret's Episcopal Church Cemetery.

Virginia Ewald
Virginia R. Ewald, a 40-year resident of Sherwood Forest, died Feb. 10, 2001 at the Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville, where she had resided for the past 2 years. She was 77.
Born Nov. 15, 1923 in Atlanta, Mrs. Ewald attended Agnes Scott College and once worked in real estate, serving as president of Virginia Ewald Realty Co. of Sherwood Forest for several years.
Her first husband, John B. Ewald, whom she married in 1942, died in 1978 and her second husband, John McKittrick, whom she married in 1983, died in 1995.
She was involved in the Severn Town Club in the 1960s and was once a member of the Anne Arundel County Board of Realtors and the Annapolis Yacht Club.
Her interests included playing golf, bridge and gardening.
Survivors include two sons, John B. Ewald III of Silver Spring and Walter W. Ewald of Annapolis; a daughter, Virginia E. Wich of Hunt Valley; her mother, Nellie T. Acree of Altanta; three grandchildren; a step-daughter, Nancy Rast of Decatur, Ga.; three step-sons, James J. McKittrick of Sherwood Forest, J. Grant McKittrick of Baltimore and Michael McKittrick of Parkton; and three step-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 tonight at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St., where services will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow. Burial will be in St. Anne's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Society for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, 1838 Greene Tree Road, Pikesville, MD 21208, or the Sherwood Forest Endowment Fund, Sherwood Forest, MD 21405.

Peter Riddle
Peter Matthew Riddle, the two-day-old infant son of Julie and Eugene Riddle of Millersville died Feb. 9, 2001 at the Rebecca M. Clatanoff Women and Children's Health Pavilion in Parole of natural causes.
Born Feb. 7, 2001, in addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Joseph and Thomas Riddle of the home; and his grandparents, Paul and Barbara Kircher of Pittsford, N.Y. and Doris Riddle of Annapolis and James Riddle of Pasadena.
Funeral services will be held Feb. 12 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church in Millersville with interment to follow in the church cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Cape Nabe c/o Hospice of the Chesapeake, 8425 Veterans Highway, Millersville, MD 21108.

Arthur Jones
Arthur Phillip Jones, 55, of Annapolis, died of cancer Feb. 7, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a brief illness.
Mr. Jones was born Feb. 3,1946, in Davidsonville. He attended Anne Arundel County public schools and graduated from the former Wiley H. Bates High School in 1964.
He was a property manager with Commercial Management Co. starting in 1982.
He enjoyed making videos and converting pictures into slides. He also loved to play bass guitar for the Silvertones of Annapolis, a gospel group.
On June 22, 1968, he was married to Diane Collins Jones.
Also surviving are one son, Eric Jones of Annapolis; three brothers, Johnny Jones of Edgewater and Frank and James Jones of Annapolis; and two sisters, Alice Leach and Margaret Parker of Annapolis.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Chews Memorial United Methodist Church, 492 Owensville Road in Harwood, where the Christian wake will be at 11 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.

Doris Goddard
Doris Day Goddard, 88, a homemaker and lifelong resident of Annapolis, died of natural causes Feb. 10, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
The daughter of David J. and Aurelia Day Wigley, Mrs. Goddard was born in Gambrills on May 24, 1912, and graduated from the former Millersville High School. She was married in 1937 to Benjamin Philip Elliott, who died in 1954, and in 1961 to Elmer Franklin Goddard, who died in 1994.
She was of the Methodist faith and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Annapolis Elks Lodge 622.
Surviving are two sons, Loren Elliott and Philip Elliott of Annapolis; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren. Her son, Donald Leroy Elliott, and her daughter, Nancy Louise Elliott, are deceased.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow with the funeral service at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Eastport United Methodist Church, 926 Bay Ridge Ave., Annapolis, MD 21403.

Leroy Koch
Leroy J. Koch, 89, a resident of Davidsonville for 37 years, died on Feb. 10, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Mr. Koch was born in Washington, D.C., on May 29, 1911. He was employed as a labor supervisor at the Navy Yard in Washington.
He was a former fire chief and president of the volunteer fire department in West Lanham Hills. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Davidsonville, the Knights of Columbus and the Maryland Sheriffs Institute. He enjoyed wood crafts, farming and construction.
Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Ruby K. Koch; two daughters, Judy C. Woods of Lanham and Lynn A. Poetzman of Michigan; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow, with the funeral service at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Evans Funeral Home, 16000 Annapolis Road in Bowie. Burial will follow at the Fort Lincoln Cemetery, 3401 Bladensburg Road in Brentwood.

Paul Townsend
Paul E. Townsend, 42, of Queen Anne and formerly of Edgewater, died of heart failure Feb. 9, 2002 at the Metropolitan Transit Authority terminal in Washington, D.C., where he had worked for the past 18 years as a mechanic.
Mr. Townsend was born in Chester, Pa., moved to Selbyville, Del., as a child and then to Edgewater. He was a 1976 graduate of Southern High School in Harwood.
He moved to Queen Anne 12 years ago from Laurel. A past member of the Woodland Beach Fire Company No. 2 and Rescue Squad Station 49 in Laurel, he was past president and currently a chief engineer of the Queen Anne-Hillsboro Fire Company.
Surviving are his wife of 17 years, Patricia V. Townsend; two children, William E. and Brittany Lyn Townsend of Queen Anne; his parents, William E. and Doris M. Records Townsend of Edgewater; his sister, Gail E. Hollis of North Beach; and his grandmother, Hilda E. Townsend of Hebron in Wicomico County.
Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Moore Funeral Home, 12 S. Second St., Denton, where services will be at 2 p.m. Burial will be private.

Eugene Wayson
Eugene W. "Gene" Wayson Sr., 84, a lifelong resident of the Owensville and West River areas in south county, died Feb. 9, 2002 at Crofton Convalescent Center of complications of an aortic aneurysm.
Mr. Wayson was born on Dec. 11, 1916, in Owensville. He attended the former Owensville School and the former Tracey's High School and graduated from Southern High School in Harwood in 1934.
A longtime farmer, Mr. Wayson worked in his youth at the family-owned Wayson's Restaurant and service station in Wayson's Corner. In the 1940s, he was an Anne Arundel County police officer and worked as a correctional officer for the State of Maryland, retiring in the mid-1960s.
Mr. Wayson was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in West River. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, wildlife and gardening.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Irene Witt Wayson; his son, Eugene W. Wayson Jr. of West River; two daughters, Martha I. Humm of Owings and Barbara J. Hartge of West River; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Christ Episcopal Church, Owensville Road in West River. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Arrangements are by Rausch Funeral Home in Owings.

Carl Cotterill
Carl Hayden Cotterill, 83, a retired chemical engineer with the federal Bureau of Mines, died Feb. 10, 2002 at his home in McLean, Va.
Mr. Cotterill was born Nov. 27, 1918, in Lamar, Mo., to Minnie Ulrich and Samuel Hayden Cotterill.
He received a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering at the University of Missouri at Rolla in 1940, an honorary degree in metallurgical engineering and a master of science degree in business administration at Washington University in St. Louis in 1948.
From 1942 to 1946 he served with the Army in North Africa, Italy and Germany in the 562nd Signal AW Battalion as an aircraft warning officer. After his discharge, he served in the Army Reserve, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel before his retirement.
While working as a metallurgical engineer for American Zinc, Lead and Smelting Co. in Dumas, Texas, he met and married Ollie Glee Mills on Dec. 25, 1941.
He worked for the Bureau of Mines of the U.S. Department of the Interior from 1971 until retiring in 1991.
He was an active and lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Sigma Xi and Alpha Chi Sigma. He held various positions in the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and was an editor, an avid golfer and student of history.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are four children, Hayden Mills Cotterill of Northville, Mich., Merrilea Ann Lamborne of Edgewater, Carla Jean LaFever of Leesburg, Va., and Wray Q.C. Cotterill of Arnold; a sister, Mary Louise Vallier of Erie, Kan.; and seven grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Wray Pierson Cotterill.
Visitation is from 7 to 9 tonight at Money and King Funeral Home, 171 W. Maple Ave., Vienna, Va. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Charles Wesley United Methodist Church, 6817 Dean Drive, McLean, Va. Burial will be in Waters Cemetery in Jasper, Mo.

Josephine Fantozzi
Josephine "Josie" Fantozzi, 95, of Edgewater and formerly of District Heights, died of natural causes Feb. 10, 2002 at Habor Hospital Cener in Baltimore.
Born Dec. 20, 1906, in Corona, N.Y., Mrs. Fantozzi was known as "Nana" to her family. She was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking.
She was a member of a Catholic church in District Heights before moving to Edgewater 20 years ago.
On Sept. 13, 1932, she married Severino Fantozzi who died July 6, 1981. A son, Lawrence Anthony Fantozzi, died in 1989.
Surviving are one son, Joseph J. Fantozzi Sr. of Brooksville, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. Services and burial in Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton will be private.
