High Point - Mrs. Delmarine Parker Taylor, 74, of 1110 Garrison St. died Sept. 20, 1999. Funeral arrangements are pending at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale.

H. Wayne Todd
Longs, S.C. – H. Wayne Todd, 63, died Sept. 19, 1999, at Loris Hospital in Loris. He was born Jan. 15, 1936, a son of Thomas Chestnut and Maggie Mae Watson Todd. He was a retired self-employed painter. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served in World War II. Surviving are five daughters, Brenda Hughes of Archdale, N.C., Judy Ann Simmons of Ash, N.C.; Joy Lee Floyd of Glendale, Ariz., Jo Lee Todd and Penny Marie Easter, both of Thomasville, N.C.; one stepdaughter, Janie Elaine Haynes of Whiteville, N.C.; one stepson, Edwin Allen Cox of LaRose, La.; two brothers, Eldon Todd and Kenneth Todd, both of Little River; two sisters, Patricia Mae Wilson of Hampton, Va., and Geraldine Stevens of Little River; 20 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lee Funeral Home Chapel in Little River by the Rev. Kenny Todd. Burial will be in Sharon Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Margaret Barber
High Point - Mrs. Margaret L. Barber of 504-B Saunders Place died Sept. 20, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Hargett-Gilmore Funeral Service at a later date.

Patricia DaLuz
Virginia Beach, Va. – Mrs. Patricia A. DaLuz died Sept. 8, 1999, at her residence. She was born Oct. 31, 1946, in Providence, R.I. Surviving are her husband, Robert B. DaLuz; two sons, Robert and Lawrance, both of Virginia Beach; one daughter, Penny DaLuz of Virginia Beach; her mother, Catherine Hepler of Providence; three brothers, Virgle M. Hepler of Providence, James V. Hepler and John T. Hepler, both of Virginia Beach; one sister, Catherine M. Bennett of Virginia Beach; and numerous nieces, nephews out of state and to all who knew her. Memorial service will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Thalia Lynn Baptist Church. Memorials may be directed to the Thalia Lynn Baptist Church or to the American Cancer Society. Colonial Crematorium in Norfolk is in charge of arrangements.

Grace Goings
High Point - Mrs. Grace Talley Goings, 79, of Grand Street died Sept. 21, 1999, at her residence following a brief illness. She was born June 1, 1920, in Moore County, a daughter of Henry and Lois Odom Maness. She was a homemaker and attended Abbotts Creek Primitive Baptist Church. Grace loved her family and enjoyed flowers, especially cactus. She was twice married, first to James “Jim” Talley, who preceded her in death in 1970, and then to George W. Goings, who survives of the home. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Phyllis Hash and her husband, Ray, of Archdale; two sons, Jerry Talley and his wife, Ann, of Thomasville and Steven Talley of High Point; a sister, Mrs. Selma Boger of High Point; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Goings requested that her body be cremated and that there not be a memorial service. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, NC 27262. Harold C. Davis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Annie Hughes
Archdale – Mrs. Annie Trotter Hughes, 92, of 625 Ashland St., formerly of Sophia, died Sept. 19, 1999, at Westwood Nursing Home. She was a native of Randolph County and a charter member of Sawyersville Wesleyan Church, where she was church secretary, Sunday school teacher and served on the board and Missionary Society. She also held offices in the War Mothers and Dogwood Garden clubs. She was employed at McCrary Hosiery until she started Asheboro Florist, then she retired and raised Shelties. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grady Lee Hughes; a daughter, Mary Frances Rich; and a son, Lloyd Hughes. Surviving are a daughter, Bertha H. Wrenn of Lady Lake, Fla.; a son, Bernard F. Hughes of Dania, Fla.; three half-sisters, Marietta Crotts, Elsie Hill and Florence Trotter, all of Asheboro; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Sawyersville Wesleyan Church by the Rev. McCray Holmes and the Rev. Darrel Rabon. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Ridge Funeral Home.

Carol Hyatt
Lexington – Mrs. Carol Holcomb Hyatt, 60, of 5022 W. Old N.C. 64 died Sept. 21, 1999. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Piedmont Funeral Home Timberlake Chapel. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Augustus Irby
High Point - Augustus Irby was born April 1, 1933, in Laurens, S.C., a son of John T. and Henretta P. Irby. He departed this earthly life Sept. 19, 1999, at his residence. He attended Laurens County public schools and completed high school in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Miracle Temple Church of God in Christ, where he was a deacon. He was last employed by Metal Creations as a supervisor. He served in the U.S. Army Korean War conflict. He was a great supporter to his community, where he often advised the youth to further their education. He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Mary Lee Irby of the home; one son, Jerome of High Point; a confidant, Priscilla Miller; two brothers, Lawrence D. (Velma) Irby and Fredrick (Lavania) Sheppard; one sister, Aiko (Nathaniel) Jackson; two grandsons, Aaron and Torrey Miller; one great-grandson, Cameron Miller; three brothers-in-law, Ralph (Ann) Davis of Rochester, N.Y., Vandell (Maude) Davis of Winnsboro, S.C., and John (Ruby) L. Davis of High Point; andfour sisters-in-law, Bobbie (Cletis) J. Johnson of the Cedar Square community, Eloise West, Versie M. Davis of High Point and Cheryl Leonard of Greensboro. Funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Miracle Temple COGIC. Burial will be in Carolina Biblical Gardens. Visitation will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at the church. Hoover’s Funeral Home is in charge of final arrangements.

Betsy Mason
Morehead City – Mrs. Betsy Clark Mason, 78, died Sept. 13, 1999, in New Tazewell, Tenn. Surviving are her husband, Charles M. Mason; a daughter, Charlotte Mason Oliver of Morehead City; a son, Capt. Charles Manning Mason Jr. of Alexandria, Va.; two sisters, Marguerite Rowe of Chapin, S.C., and Jacquelyn Poe of Durham; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Oct. 9 at First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Timothy J. Havlicek. Memorials may be directed to First Presbyterian Church, 1604 Arendell St. Brooks Funeral Home & Crematory Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Patterson
High Point - Joseph B. Patterson, 77, of 2206 Porsha Lane died Sept. 20, 1999, at Community General Hospital in Thomasville. He was born July 27, 1922, in Surry County, a son of Samuel C. and Minnie Riggs Patterson. He was the former president of the Joseph Dean Co., retiring in 1997. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a former High Point city councilman and mayor pro-tem. He was a member of the Furniture Manufacturers Credit Association and for 18 years was chairman of the Furniture Market Development Committee. He was the honorary chairman of the first High Point Furniture Festival of 1998. In 1992, he won the Others Award given by the Salvation Army, where he also served as a director. He was a member of the High Point Kiwanis Club and a former director of the High Point Chamber of Commerce. He was presented the Community Hero award by the High Point United Way. He was a member of Green Street Baptist Church, where he was a life deacon, Singles Sunday School Department director and from 1958 until 1970, he had been the superintendant of the Sunday school. On Sept. 29, 1945, he married Nell Rutledge, who survives of the home. Also surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Mary Beth Dalley and her husband, Darold, of High Point; two sisters, Mrs. Inez Lawson of Mount Airy and Mrs. Pat Cromer of Somerdale, N.J.; two brothers, Roger L. Patterson of Mount Airy and Jack Patterson of Burlington; and one granddaughter, Mrs. Jessica Stearns and her husband, Michael, of Charlotte. Funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Green Street Baptist Church by the Rev. C.W. Moss and Lt. Col. Tom Jones. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Sechrest Funeral Home, E. Lexington Avenue. The family has asked the Kiwanis Club, the directors of the Salvation Army and the deacons of Green Street Baptist Church to serve as honorary pallbearers. Memorials may be directed to Green Street Baptist Church Building Fund, 303 Rotary Drive, High Point, NC 27262 or to the Salvation Army, 301 W. Green St., High Point, NC 27260.

Ruth Petty
High Point - Mrs. Ruth Miller Petty, 71, of 2303 Dover Place died Sept. 20, 1999, at her residence. She was born April 1, 1928, in Alliance, Ohio, the daughter of Howard and Minnie Miller. She graduated from High Point High School and attended High Point College. She was a homemaker and a member of Christ United Methodist Church and the McFarland Sunday School Class. On March 25, 1948, she married Nathaniel B. Petty Jr., who preceded her in death March 21, 1992. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Martha Petty in 1977. Surviving are three daughters, Amy Clarke and her husband, Gary, of Livermore, Calif., Elizabeth Swallen and her husband, Jon, of Fairfield, Conn., and Nedra Proctor of High Point; two sons, David Petty of High Point and Robert Petty and his wife, Erin, of Mystic, Conn.; eight grandchildren, Layla Loens, Leslie Clarke, Holly Clarke, Cody Clarke, Thayer Swallen, Cameron Swallen, Josh Proctor and Amber Proctor; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Errett D. Miller of High Point. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Sechrest Chapel on E. Lexington Avenue by Dr. Glenn L. Myers. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Christ United Methodist Church, 1300 N. College Drive, High Point, NC 27262.

High Point - McLendon Smith of 607 Cross St. died Sept. 21, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Hargett-Gilmore Funeral Service at a later date.

Delmarine Taylor
High Point - Mrs. Delmarine Parker Taylor, 74, of 1110 Garrison St. died Sept. 20, 1999, at Evergreens of High Point. She was born June 6, 1925, in Chesterfield County, S.C., a daughter of Henry and Roberta Henry Parker. She was a homemaker and had attended Cloverdale Church of the Living God. On June 28, 1947, she married Grady F. Taylor, who survives of the residence. Also surviving are a son, Ralph W. Taylor of Sophia; two daughters, Ms. Inez Huggins of Jacksonville and Ms. Angelene Taylor of High Point; her father of Greenville, S.C.; a brother, Pete Parker of Asheboro; a sister, Mrs. Alma Mae Keel of Dover, Tenn.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale by Bud Proctor. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Margaret Barber
High Point - Mrs. Margaret L. Barber, 69, of 504-B Saunders Place died Sept. 20, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital. She was born Jan. 31, 1930, in Ansonville, a daughter of William and Rosetta Medley Watkins. She was a retired employee with Robert and Susan Culp. She attended Ansonville High School and was a member of Pearson Memorial AME Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard L. Barber; her parents; and four sisters, Ruth Harris, Ruby Watkins, Lilly Rippy and Mildred Clark. Surviving are a son, Richard S. Barber of Lexington; a daughter-in-law, Beverly Barber of High Point; two brothers, Charles Watkins of Morganton and James Watkins and wife, Bunnie, of Ansonville; and three sisters, Mary Rose Little of Ansonville, Maxine (James) Barber of High Point, and Elaine (June) Little of Ansonville. Funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Friday at Pearson Memorial AME Church by the Rev. J.R. Gwyn. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be 3-3:30 p.m. Friday at the church and other times at the residence.

Joseph Coble
Greensboro – Joseph Howard Coble, 91, father of U.S. Rep. Howard Coble (R-NC), died Sept. 22, 1999. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Alamance Presbyterian Church, 4000 Presbyterian Road. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Forbis & Dick Funeral Home, 1118 N. Elm St.

Mary Embler
High Point - Mrs. Mary Ruth Voncannon Embler, 73, of 8348 Harlow Road, Lot #18, died Sept. 22, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital. She was born May 4, 1926, in Guilford County, a daughter of Edgar Allen and Florence Hicks Voncannon. She was a retired employee of Acme Sample Books Inc. and was of the Baptist faith. On Dec. 22, 1946, she married Carlos Earl Embler, who survives of the home. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mildred Diane Beamer. Also surviving are two daughters, Gigi Frye and her husband, Jimmy, of Winston-Salem and Kathy Vanhoy and her husband, Terry, of High Point; five sons, Ted Embler of Thomasville, John Embler of Asheboro and Sam Embler, Howard Embler and Gene Embler, all of Archdale; three sisters, Mrs. Edna Southern and Mrs. Christine “Tiny” Palmer of High Point and Mrs. Lib McNeil of Apopka, Fla.; three brothers, George Voncannon, Tommy Voncannon and Jimmy Voncannon, all of High Point; 17 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Sechrest Archdale Chapel by the Rev. Patrick Stair. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, 120 Trindale Road, Archdale.
