Delmar C. Maxel
Delmar C. Maxel, 79, of Eldorado, died Saturday, Aug. 14, at Wayne Hospital in Greenville after a sudden illness.
Born Nov. 10, 1919, in Preble County, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Estella Maxel. He was a retired State Highway worker, and was a member of the Castine Church of the Brethren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Minnie Silvers and Ruth Overholtz; and five brothers, Edgar, Ervin, William, Raymond and Everett Maxel.
Survivors include his wife, Viola P. (Gardiner) Maxel; two sisters, Frances Krintzline of Eaton and Martha Loy of Lewisburg; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, at Bussard-Barnes-Vaniman Funeral Home, 311 N. Main St., Eldorado, with the Rev. Calvin Cheek officiating. Burial will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery near West Alexandria. The family will receive friends from noon-2 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Freda Bowser
Freda Bowser, 73, of West Alexandria, died Sunday, Aug. 15, in Dayton.
Born May 1, 1926, she was the daughter of John and Ida (Ehler) Habekost. She was a graduate of Miami University, majoring in music and math. Mrs. Bowser taught at Northmont schools for 16 years, and was a church organist most of her life at many area churches. She was a member of Gleaners Chapter #182, OES; and Salem Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her husband of 46 years, William Bowser; a son, John (Helen) Bowser of Virginia; two daughters, Diane (Jack) Walker of West Alexandria and Barbara Bowser of Centerville, Ohio; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl Habekost and Stanley Habekost.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, at Salem Lutheran Church, West Alexandria, with the Rev. Daniel Snider and the Rev. J. Herman Bassler officiating. Burial will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery near West Alexandria. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church. Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, West Alexandria, is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph R. Dafler Jr.
Joseph R. Dafler Jr., 83, of 2945 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, N.C., and formerly of Eaton and Bradenton, Fla., died Friday, Aug. 13, at his home in North Carolina.
Born Aug. 25, 1915, in Lanier Township (Preble County), he was the son of the late Joseph R. Sr. and Wanda (Unger) Dafler. He graduated from Lanier Township School in 1933, after which he served in the CCC and was stationed in Idaho where he spent a great deal of time fighting forest fires.
During World War II, he achieved the rank of captain in the Army Signal Corps. He retired from Dayton Power and Light Co. in the early 1970s, where he served as regional manger at the Coldwater and Eaton offices. He had served as clerk/treasurer of Lanier Township, and had been a member of the Lanier Township School Board.
Mr. Dafler was a member of Rotary International, where he served as president while in the Eaton chapter. He was active in the Lutheran church, having served as Sunday school superintendent at Grace Lutheran Church in Eaton and congregational president and treasurer at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Bradenton, Fla.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur and Gerald Dafler.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia (Handley) Dafler, whom he married Dec. 3, 1942; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra D. and William M. Hildebolt of Winston-Salem, N.C., Ann D. and John B. Exline of Gahanna, Ohio; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard J. and Christy B. Dafler of Covington, La.
Also surviving are grandchildren, William and Daphne Hildebolt of New York, N.Y., Joseph Hildebolt of Winston-Salem, N.C., Amy Dafler Meaux of Austin, Texas, Adam, Elizabeth, Katherine and Andrew Exline of Gahanna, Ohio; a great-granddaughter, Hannah Hildebolt of New York, N.Y.
Other survivors are brothers and sisters-in-law, Dale and Catherine Dafler of Ingomar, James and Marjorie Dafler of West Alexandria, Fred and Joanne Dafler of Dublin, Ohio, John and Kay Dafler of Englewood, Paul Dafler of Lewisburg.
Also, sisters and brothers-in-law, Carolene and Hugh Sigler of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Samantha and William Riffel of Lewisburg, Patricia and Kevin Murray of Huber Heights; nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, at the First Presbyterian Church, 123 W. Decatur St., Eaton, with the Rev. Wayne D. Morrison officiating. The family will receive friends in the social room at the church after the service. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Gratis, at the convenience of the family. Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association-Preble County Unit, P.O. Box 32, Eaton, Ohio 45320, or to one's favorite charity.

Margaret Bindewald
Margaret Bindewald, 90, of Fairfield, formerly of Eaton, died Sunday, Aug. 15, in Fairfield.
Born July 17, 1909, in Oggerheim, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Ludwig and Margaret (Mess) Hock.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hans Bindewald, in 1987; two sisters; and one brother.
Survivors include a son, Herman H. Bindewald of Trenton; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton. Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

Marcia A. Kwolek
Marcia A. (Shover) Kwolek, 64, of Fairborn, died Sunday, Aug. 15, at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.
Born Jan. 7, 1935, in Brookville, she was the daughter of Hobart D. "Butch" and Idella Mae (Haupt) Shover. She was a 1953 graduate of Monroe Township High School. She had worked at Frigidaire Corp. in Dayton, was co-owner/operator of Pastime Lanes and Restaurant in Dayton and family-owned Moto-Photo in Beavercreek.
She was preceded in death by her father in 1996.
Survivors include her husband of 36 years, Bob Kwolek; a son and daughter-in-law, Robby and Jenny Kwolek of Dayton; a grandson, Cory Kwolek; and her mother, Idella Mae Shover of Eldorado.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, at the United Methodist Church, North Main Street, Eldorado, with Pastor Barbara Dungan officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday in the church social room following the service. Bussard-Barnes-Vaniman Funeral Home, Eldorado, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Miami Valley Health Foundation, Intensive Care Unit, 31 Wyoming St., Dayton, Ohio 45409-2753.

Wanda G. Guckian
Wanda Gail Guckian, 48, of 5073 E. Fourteenth Road, Coffeen, Ill., died early Saturday morning, Aug. 7, as the result of a house fire.
Mrs. Guckian was asleep in the home after working the second shift at an area hospital. Passersby saw flames and called 9-1-1, and when firefighters arrived, the house was fully engulfed. Her husband was at work at the time of the fire.
The state fire marshal's office, the sheriff's department and coroner's office personnel are investigating because of the fatality.
Born Dec. 15, 1950, in Springfield, Ill., she was the daughter of Ralph Morris McLaughlin and Ielene (Knoles) Burris.
She married Bruce Guckian on June 6, 1998. Her husband is the son of Don Guckian of Eaton, and attended school in Camden.
Survivors include her husband, Bruce; her mother, Ielene; a son, Tim Mount of Coffeen, Ill.; a stepson, Garrod Guckian of Witt, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Cathy Guckian of Witt, Ill.; a grandson, Dylan Mount; a brother, Ralph McLaughlin of Hillsboro, Ill.; a sister, Janet White of Coffeen, Ill.; a half brother, David Doyen of Fillmore, Ill.; and two half sisters, Beverly Grindley of Coffeen, Ill., and Judy Eichelberger of Litchfield, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her father; and a half sister, Doris Greenwood.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, at Toberman Funeral Home, Coffeen, Ill, with the Rev. Tim Woolard officiating.

Verlin L. Pollock
Verlin L. Pollock, 62, of Eaton, died Monday, Aug. 16, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind.
Born Oct. 14, 1936, in Eaton, he was the son of the late Walter Herman and Charlotte Mildred (Stover) Pollock. He was a 1955 graduate of Jackson High School, and served in the U.S. Army National Guard of Ohio from 1957-1961. He was an over the road truck driver for Emerson Electric, Schneider Tank Lines, Kemper Cabinet and Zumstein, Inc.
Mr. Pollock was a member of American Legion Post #215 and Eagles Lodge #2202, both of Eaton. He enjoyed flying, farming, traveling, mechanics, camping, dancing and horses.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Janice Marie Pollock, in 1935, and Donna Jean Pollock, in 1972; and a nephew, Michael K. Pollock, in 1984.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Mabel M. (Wilson) Pollock; a daughter and son-in-law, Kim A. and Bill Miley of Eaton; brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald K. and Arthella Pollock, Gordon W. and Becky Pollock, all of Eaton; grandchildren, Troy D., Chad A. and Marica M. Miley; nephews, nieces and cousins.
Funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 21, at Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, with the Rev. Lillian Gillespie officiating. Burial, with military graveside services, was in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society-Preble County Unit; or to the Northwest Emergency Squad, New Paris.

James D. Driggs
James D. "Danny" Driggs, 15, of Eaton, died Monday, Aug. 16, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton.
He was born March 22, 1984, in Greenville. He was working this summer for the Dayton KOA Campgrounds in Brookville, was an active member of the Eaton Church of the Brethren, and would have been a sophomore at Eaton High School this year. His interests included track, basketball, football, band, skateboarding and playing the guitar.
Survivors include his parents, Louis L. and Joellen R. (Leas) Driggs of Eaton; paternal grandmother, Marilyn M. Driggs of Kettering; paternal great-grandmother, Charlotte M. Morris of Kettering; maternal grandmother, Mary Jo Leas of Greenville.
Also surviving are a sister and brother-in-law, Tani J. and Dean Trejo of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, Brian M. and MaryAnn Waltz of Cincinnati; a nephew, Braden M. Waltz, and niece, Hannah J. Waltz, both of Cincinnati; aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were Friday, Aug. 20, at the Eaton Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Martin Peacock officiating. Burial was in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria. Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton Church of the Brethren Youth Fellowship, 1407 N. Barron St., Eaton, Ohio 45320.

James L. Lutz
James Leroy Lutz, 55, of Indianapolis, Ind., died Monday, Aug. 16, in Indianapolis.
Born June 10, 1944, in Preble County, he had worked for D & M Manufacturing in Connersville, Ind. He attended the Connersville Baptist Temple.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred A. (Suman) Lutz, in 1986; a sister, Donna Marie Lutz, in 1952; and a brother, Dale Lutz, in 1995.
Survivors include his father, Wilbur D. Lutz of Eaton; a daughter, Tina Marie Graves of Indianapolis, Ind.; sons, David Leroy and Wilbur Rowe Lutz, both of Indianapolis, Ind.; sisters, Shirley Karns and Alberta Lanthrope, both of Eaton, Delores Vaughn of Richmond, Ind., and Sandra Cravins of West Union, Ohio; brothers, Glen Lutz and Harry Lutz, both of Eaton; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services were Friday, Aug. 20, at Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel, with the Rev. Harold P. Combs officiating. Burial was in Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton.
