Ceola "Dinky" Daniels
Died: 02/28/1999

Ceola (Dinky) Daniels, of Dayton, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, in a Chattanooga area hospital. She was 67.

A lifelong resident of Dayton, she was of the Methodist Faith. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Wendell, Archie, Loreal and Eskell Daniels, and parents, R.O. and Martha Jane (Wilkerson) Daniels.

Survivors include two sisters, Eloise Roberts and Juanita Cummings, both of Dayton; uncle, Luther Wilkerson; two aunts, Henrietta Smith and Blanche Wilkerson; several nieces and nephews, and a host of cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, 1999, in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Donald Daniels officiating. Burial will follow the services in Pinecrest Cemetery in Dayton. The family will receive visitors one hour before the service. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of arrangements.

Thelma Glayds Shelton
Died: 03/01/1999

Thelma Glayds Shelton, of Dayton, died Monday, March 1, 1999, at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga. She was 84.

Born June 1, 1914, in Dayton, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Floyd Arnold and Myra Ann McCullough. She was a lifelong Dayton resident and worked as a looper at Kayser-Roth for 31 years. She attended Faith Baptist Church in Dayton. Survivors include her husband, Malcolm Emmett Shelton of Dayton; two sons, Neil Shelton of Hixson, Tenn., and Jackie Shelton of Soddy-Daisy; three brothers, Robert and Donald Ray Arnold, both of Dayton, and Walter Arnold of Kingston, Tenn.; three sisters, Nancy Brady and Helen Lindsey, both of Dayton, and Cathy Childs of Baltimore, Md.; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, 1999, at Faith Baptist Church in Dayton with Rev. Wilburn Hartsman and Rev. Ken Fugate officiating. Burial will follow the services in Buttram Cemetery in Dayton. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

Clinton Smith
Died: 02/28/1999

Clinton Smith, of Hendon, Tenn., died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 48.

He was a retired iron worker and a member of the Hendon Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Blaine Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Naomi Johnson Smith of Hendon, Tenn.; daughter, Tammy Hudson of the Brayton community; two sons, Russell Smith and William Hall, both of Hendon, Tenn.; mother, Katie Smith of Hendon, Tenn.; three sisters, Rosie Swanner and Anna Ruth Skiles, both of Hendon, Tenn., and Susie Keith of Soddy-Daisy; six brothers, Marvin Smith of Soddy-Daisy, Edward Smith of Hixson, Tenn., James Smith of the Brayton community, Billy Smith, Carlos Smith and Ronnie Smith, all of Hendon, Tenn.; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, 1999, at Hendon Baptist Church with Rev. Steve James and Rev. Milford Bowman officiating. Interment will follow the services in Hendon Cemetery. Williamson and Sons Funeral Home in Soddy-Daisy is in charge of arrangements.

Blanche M. Wills
Died: 02/21/1999

Blanche M. Wills, of Dayton, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, at Rhea Medical Center in Dayton. She was 91.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Dayton and had been a resident of Dayton for 22 years.

Survivors include her daughter, Reba Foxall of Hixson, Tenn.; son, Edward A. Wills of Lackport, Ill.; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, at Moore-Cartner Funeral Home in Winchester, Tenn., with Rev. Jake Strickland officiating. Interment followed the services in Franklin Memorial Gardens in Winchester, Tenn. Moore-Cartner Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Carl Brady
Died: 03/03/1999

Carl Brady, of Battle Creek, Mich., formerly of Dayton, died there Wednesday, March 3, 1999, at his home. He was 86.

Born April 1, 1912, in Dayton, he was the son of George and Addie J. (Eakins) Brady. He moved in 1951 to Battle Creek, Mich., where he worked at Oliver Equipment Co. from until 1954. He then worked from 1954 to 1977 at Hannah’s Cement Products on the loading dock. He was member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Battle Creek.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Marie White, whom he married in Dayton in 1931; his brother, Wallace Brady; sister, Anne Marie Brady; and grandson, Timothy Herbstreith.

Survivors include two daughters, Helen “Louise” Fleming and Katherine Herbstreith, both of Battle Creek, Mich.; sisters, Genva Riggs, Lila Mae Stewart, Jessie Hall and Alice Davis, all of Battle Creek, Jane Chadwick of Dayton and Nancey Riggs of Spring City; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 9 a.m. Saturday, March 6, 1999, in the chapel of Richard A. Henry Funeral Home in Battle Creek, Mich. Burial will follow the services in Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens. The family asks that memorials be sent to Good Samaritan Hospice. Richard A. Henry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charles "Hoss" Coulter
Died: 03/02/1999

Charles (Hoss) Coulter, of Dayton, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 80.

A veteran of World War II, Mr. Coulter served in the U.S. Army. He was member of Brady Williams American Legion Post 100. He was of the Church of God Faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mae Coulter; son, Gary Coulter; brother, Raymond Coulter; grandchildren, Bobby, Caitlyn and Heath Blaylock, Ryan Suttles and Joshua Gore.

Survivors include his wife, Nell (Mama) Coulter of Dayton; children, Emmalee Montgomery, Betty Suttles, Sue Blaylock, Ed Coulter, Jim Coulter, Billy Ray Coulter, Wayne Coulter, Carol Taylor, Rose Coulter, Mary Ann Hammonds and Randy Coulter, all of Dayton; brother, Tommy Coulter; sister, Robbie Milligan; 28 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Friday, March 5, 1999, in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Sister Opal Scott and Rev. Al Levengood officiating. Interment followed the services in Cranmore Cove Cemetery. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

Brown Joe Gordon
Died: 03/07/1999

Brown Joe Gordon, of Spring City, died Sunday, March 7, 1999, at Oak Ridge (Tenn.) Methodist Hospital. He was 83.

Mr. Gordon was a former mayor of Red Bank, Tenn., and was a member of King Memorial Seventh Day Adventist Church in Spring City. He was a veteran of World War II and was a retired merchant.

Survivors include his wife, Anne Gordon of Spring City; three sons, Bobby Wayne Gordon of Red Bank, Tenn., Billy Ray Gordon of Graysville and Roger Lee Gordon of Graysville; step-son, John Taylor of Gate City, Va.; two brothers, Paul Gordon of Graysville and Alton Gordon of Red Bank; sister, Bonnie Hicks of Dayton; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 10, 1999, in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Pastor David Jones, Pastor Woodson Walker and Elder Steve Johnson officiating. Burial will follow the services in Pleasant View Cemetery. The family asks that memorial contributions be made to King Memorial Seventh Day Adventist Church, 1548 Cemetery Rd., Spring City, TN 37381. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of arrangements.

Glenda Sue Alvey
Died: 03/13/1999

Glenda Sue Alvey, of Evensville, died Saturday, March 13, 1999, at Erlanger Medical Center. She was 46.

Mrs. Alvey was a lifelong resident of Rhea County. She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnny and Gladys Johnson. Survivors include her husband, Robert Alvey; son, Terry Alvey; three daughters, Crystal Steel, Angela Alvey and Katherine Alvey; two sisters, Virginia Dobbs and Sheila Johnson; brother, Johnny Johnson; grandson, Brandon Steel; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 16, 1999, in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Reverend Stan Brotherton officiating. Burial was in Smyrna Cemetery. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Ross Fugate
Died: 03/12/1999

Mary Ross Fugate, of Dayton, died Friday, March 12, 1999, in a local hospital. She was 80.

Mrs. Fugate was a life long resident of Dayton and a member of White Oak Baptist Church. She was retired from Kayser-Roth. Mrs. Fugate was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Fugate.

Survivors include three daughters, Evadean Davis of Dayton, Linda Payne and Mary Tapley, both of Hickory, N.C.; seven grandchildren and six great-grand children.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, March 14, 1999, in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Reverend Clyde Fitzgerald officiating. Burial was in Spence Cemetery. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.

Edward C. Jones
Died: 03/13/1999

Edward C. “Ed” Jones, of Breman, Ga., died Saturday, March 13, 1999, at Alvin C. York VA Hospital in Murfreesboro, Tenn. He was 57.

A former resident of Spring City, Mr. Jones was the son of the late Coram K. and Velma Moyers Jones. He was a member of the Pennine Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Jones was employed for many years with Bill Vaughn Construction Co. and was preceded in death by a daughter, Alesha Jones, and two brothers, Howard and Danny Jones.

Survivors include his wife, Janice Dryden Jones of Breman, Ga.; son, Micah Jones of Chattanooga; stepdaughter, Melanie Mullins of Breman, Ga.; stepson, Mark Windom of Breman, Ga.; three sisters, Faye Alley and Mary Hill, both of Spring City, and Martha Hood of Lumberton, N.C.; two brothers, Elmer Jones of Spring City and Henry Jones of Dayton; five stepchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, March 15, 1999, in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with Reverend Darwin Caldwell officiating. Burial was in the Spring City Cemetery. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert Lee King
Died: 03/11/1999

Robert Lee King, of Hudson, Fla., died Thursday, March 11, 1999, in his home in Florida He was 72.

Born January 12, 1927, in Chattanooga, he was the son of Charles and Nancy (Williams) King. He lived in Rhea County and then in Florida until 1995. Mr. King was of the Baptist faith and was a carpenter at trade.

Survivors include seven sons, John Smith of Dayton, Charles Smith of Spring Hill, Fla., Allen Ray King of Chattanooga, David Smith of Hudson, FL, Carl King of Bulls Gap, Tenn., Kevin King of Tarpon Springs, Fla., and Donald Thomas of Dayton; four daughters, Sharlene Saroukos of Tarpon Springs, Fla., Kathy E. Brooks of Holiday, Fla., Julia Haney of Jasper, Tenn., and Mildred Smith of Hudson, Fla.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, March 15, 1999, in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Reverend Harold Crisp officiating. Burial was in Smyrna Cemetery, Evensville. Vanderwall Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
