Marie Dovie Hooker
Died: 11/24/1998

Marie Dovie (Hard) Hooker, of Battle Creek, Mich., died there Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, at Laurels of Bedford. She was 83.

Born Jan. 10, 1915, in Evensville, she was the daughter of the late Albert H. and Joanna (Ward) Hard. She lived in Battle Creek, Mich., since the early 1930s and worked as a packer at the Kellogg Company until her retirement in 1975. She was also formerly employed at Pop’s Laundry in Battle Creek. She enjoyed church and working with the children and seniors at the Level Park Weslyan Church. She enjoyed yard work, gardening, flowers and crafts.

She was preceded in death by her parents; step-mother, Adah Elizabeth Webb; first husband, Thomas H. Bonner; second husband, Glesner J. Hooker; infant son, Carl Joseph Bonner; daughter, Barbara M. Whitman; three brothers, Arlin, Charlie and Willard Hard; and three sisters, Elle May Alsip, Mary Gladys Hard and Elza Hard.

Survivors include her daughters, Gladys M. Nixon of Battle Creek, Mich., and Helen M. Lawrence of Lacey, Mich.; son, Thomas H. Bonner Jr., of Battle Creek, Mich.; brothers, Otis Hard and John Hard, both of Battle Creek, Mich., Jessie Hard of Florida and G.W. Hard of Nashville, Mich.; sisters, Cora Lee Johnson and Bonnie Griffin, both of Ludington, Mich.; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, in the chapel of Backman Hebble Funeral Chapel with Rev. Melanie Baker-Streevy of Birchwood United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Reese Cemetery in Springfield, Mich. The family asks that memorial contributions be made to the charity of their choice. Backman Hebble Funeral Service in Battle Creek, Mich., is in charge of arrangements.

Earl Francis Leuallen
Died: 01/04/1999

Earl Francis Leuallen, of Evensville, died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 76.

A lifelong resident of Rhea County, he was a member of Evensville United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Celia Iles Leuallen.

Survivors include a daughter, Diana Newell of Soddy-Daisy; step-mother, Mollie Couch of Dayton; three brothers, Johnny Louallen of Evensville, Sam Louallen of Hixson, Tenn., and Tommy Louallen of Graysville; three sisters, Patsy Stinnett of the Smyrna Community, Geraldine Filyaw and Edwina Farmer, both of Dayton; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Lonnie Eldridge officiating. Interment will follow the services in Smyrna Cemetery. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of arrangements.

Addie Lou Smith
Died: 01/01/1999

Addie Lou Smith, of Dayton, died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, at Bledsoe County General Hospital in Pikeville, Tenn. She was 59.

She was a lifelong resident of Rhea County and was of the Church of God Faith. She was preceded in death by her parents, Burt and Rosie Webb Neal, and brother, Bill Neal.

Survivors include two sons, Corwin Smith and Timothy Smith, both of Dayton; two daughters, Beatrice Bishop and Dorris Welch, both of Dayton; four brothers, Robert Neal of Grandview, James Neal, Don Neal and Jackie Neal, all of Spring City; five sisters, Edna Thurman, Angie Hunter, Teresa Gothard, all of Dayton, Joanne Ake of Nashville, and Mary Ann Jones of Spring City; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted 3:30 p.m. Monday, Jan, 4, 1999, in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with Rev. Leroy Smith officiating. Interment followed the services in Smyrna Cemetery. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City was in charge of arrangements.

Paul Jackson Youther
Died: 12/30/1998

Paul Jackson Yother, of Springfield, Mich., died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at Battle Creek (Mich.) Health Systems. He was 91.

Born Oct. 21, 1907, in Dayton, Mr. Yother moved to Battle Creek in 1942. He worked with Eaton Manufacturing until the end of World War II, then went on the manage Dole, Brenner and Market Basket Super Markets. He later worked for Coca-Cola for 10 years and was most recently employed by Valley View Elementary School in the lunchroom where he worked for over 16 years.

He was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy, Springfield (Mich.), where he served and taught for many years as Sunday School Superintendent. He was also deacon and treasurer for the Church of God state offices for over 21 years. He was preceded in death by his sister, Kate, brother, Ralph, and son, Donald. He enjoyed gardening and dearly loved his family.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Yother of Springfield, Mich.; four daughters, Juanita Brown of Detroit, Mich., Reba Brown of South Carolina, Barbara Bunch and Debra Blaniar, both of Battle Creek, Mich.; son, Harold Yother of Battle Creek, Mich.; three sisters, Bonnie Cooley of Louisiana, Jessie Thurman of Dayton, and Lola Martin of Chickamauga, Ga.; two brothers, James Yother Jr. of Nashville and Hershel Yother of Dayton; 12 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at noon Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at the Church of God of Prophecy Church in Springfield, Mich., with Rev. Jesse Buie officiating. Interment followed the services in Memorial Park Cemetery in Battle Creek, Mich. Royal Funeral Home in Battle Creek, Mich., was in charge of arrangements.

Clyde Capps
Died: 01/04/1999

Clyde Capps Sr., of Dayton, died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 83.

Mr. Capps was employed with Norfolk Southern and was preceded in death by two brothers, Clayton Capps and Wallace Capps.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Wilma J. Capps, of Dayton; son, Clyde F. Capps of Dayton; two brothers, Glenn S. Capps of Milton, Fla., and Thomas A. Capps of Chattanooga; granddaughter, Annette Capps Whitaker of Knoxville; great-granddaughter, Katherine Renee (Katie) Whitaker of Knoxville; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Revs. J.C. Gholston and David Burkhart officiating. Interment followed the services in Buttram Cemetery. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

Sarah Lydia Hartbarger
Died: 01/06/1999

Sarah Lydia Hartbarger, of Evensville, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at the Rhea County Nursing Home in Dayton. She was 95.

Born in Pickens County, Ga., June 20, 1903, she was the daughter of John P. Hales and Rhoda (Turner) Hales and lived in Rhea County since 1974. She was a homemaker and a member of the Dayton Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clyde Hartbarger; son, Glenn E. Hartbarger; daughter, Marzell Duncan; and brother, Dennis Hales.

Survivors include her daughter, Virginia Arnold of Evensville; two sons, Charles Howard Hartbarger of Toledo, Ohio and Earl Max Hartbarger of Whitehouse, Ohio; sister, Ruby Harrison of Dalton, Ga.; 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, at Dayton Church of God with Rev. Billy Bewley and Rev. Larry Arnold officiating. Interment followed the services in Spring City Memorial Gardens.

Orville Hartbarger
Died: 12/17/2000

Orville Hartbarger, of Sale Creek, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at a Spring City Care Center. He was 89.

A carpenter by trade, Mr. Hartbarger was a member of the Sale Creek Masonic Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Roy Hartbarger.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Ray Hartbarger of Sale Creek; daughter, Juanita Hartbarger of Hixson; sons, Danny Hartbarger of San Antonio, Texas, Doyle Hartbarger of Sale Creek, and Paul Hartbarger of Nashville; sister, Kitty Jones of Indiana; brother, Bill Hartbarger of Ohio; step-children, Oscar Ray, Linda Wolfe, Marsha Atha and Martha Hickman; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday in the chapel of Williamson and Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Ted Painter officiating. Burial followed in Greenwood Cemetery. Williamson and Sons Funeral Home in Soddy-Daisy was in charge of the arrangements.

Geneva Kathleen Ritcha
Died: 11/28/1998

Geneva Kathleen Ritcha, of Beaumont, Calif., formerly of Rhea County, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 1998, in Riverside, Calif. She was 61.

Survivors include her husband, Eldon Ritcha of Beaumont, Calif.; daughter, Darlene Ritcha of Beaumont, Calif.; three sons, Ronnie Ritcha, Danny Ritcha, Allen Ritcha, all of Beaumont, Calif.; brother, Steve Crowe of Evensville; four sisters, Bertha Tilley of Evensville, Margie Shipley of Dayton, Mary Meyers of Evensville and Cleo Hickman of Evensville; three grandchildren and several nieces in nephews.

A memorial service was held in California with burial at sea off the cost of Orange County, Calif. Announcement courtesy of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton.

Billy Adams
Died: 01/11/1999

Billy Adams, of Dayton, died Monday, Jan. 11, 1999, at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga. He was 50.

The son of Ray E. and Inez (Varner) Adams, Mr. Adams lived in Sale Creek until moving to Dayton 27 years ago. He was a graduate of Sale Creek High School, and worked for TVA at Sequoyah for 21 years as a labor foreman. He belonged to Masonic Lodge 512 F&AM, Past Master, 1987. He was an avid hunter and a member of New Union Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his mother.

Survivors include his wife, Jo (Bishop) Adams of Dayton; son, Jason Adams of Dayton; father, Ray E. Adams of Sale Creek; three sisters, Anna York of New York, Wilma Emery of Sale Creek and Betty Williamson of Miami, Fla.; brother, Sonny Adams of Waverly, Tenn.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton with Dr. Danny Ruehling officiating. Masonic graveside services will be conducted following the services. Vanderwall Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Esther D. Moore
Died: 01/08/1999

Esther D. Moore, of Spring City, died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, at Rockwood Health Care Center in Rockwood, Tenn. She was 101.

A lifelong resident of Spring City, she was a charter member of Central Baptist Church and a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School class. She was the daughter of the late William R. and Delia Delaray Floyd Hill, and the wife of the late John Moore.

Survivors include her son, Raymond Moore of Spring City; daughter, Celia Dodson of Orange Grove, Texas; sisters, Laura Fischesser of Spring City and Lena Smith of Graysville; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Campbell officiating. Interment followed the services in Spring City Cemetery. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City was in charge of arrangements.

Ruby Evelyn Ward
Died: 01/10/1999

Ruby Evelyn Ward, of Dayton, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, at her daughter’s home in Ringgold, Ga. She was 85.

Born May 10, 1913, in Dayton, Mrs. Ward was a Dayton resident most of her life. She was a graduate of Rhea Central High School and a homemaker. She formerly taught school for several years and also worked at the Rhea County Nursing Home. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting and traveling—especially to the Holy Lands where she visited twice. She was a member of Graysville Seventh Day Adventist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Edward Walker and Ada Elfledia (Montgomery) Walker; husband, Charlie Lee Ward; and sister, Hazel Walker Wilkey.

Survivors include four daughters, Ruth Motes of Dayton, Ohio, Naomi Davis of Sevierville, Tenn., Linda Hanon of Ringgold, Ga., and Betty Brown of Chattanooga; four sons, Charles E. Ward of Dayton, Arvil E. Ward of Dayton, Bobby G. Ward of Graysville and Felix L. Ward of Dayton; three sisters, Beulah McGhee of Battle Creek, Mich., Lila McMillen of Battle Creek, Mich., and Oleta Whitfield of Dayton; 43 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Graysville with Pastor David Jones and Everett Brown officiating. Interment will follow the services in Cove Cemetery in Dayton. Vanderwall Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
