Sexton
Loranza Stevenson Sexton Jr., age 43, died Friday, July 28, 2000 in Daytona Beach, Fla. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Mayes Sexton of Daytona Beach, Fla.; one daughter, Tina M. Sexton of Baltimore, Md.; two sons, Steven Rally Sexton of Baltimore, Md., and Rocky Sexton of Marion; his mother, Doris Wassum Brown of Bonifay, Fla.; his father, Loranza Stevenson Sexton Sr., Marion; three sisters, Betty J. Russ and Mary Hines, both of Baltimore, Md., and Vickie Walters of Tucson, Ariz.; one brother, Roger Sexton of Bonifay, Fla.; his grandmother, Carrie Wassum of Atkins; two half sisters, Loria Lee Sexton of Marion, and Teresa Brown of Baltimore, Md.; one half brother, Jason Sexton of Sugar Grove; one grandchild; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today, Aug. 2, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. William T. Wing III officiating.
Burial will follow in Wassum Cemetery in Atkins. Seaver-Brown Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Tolliver
J.D. Tolliver, age 76, of Troutdale, died Thursday, July 27, 2000 at Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax.
Mr. Tolliver was born June 19, 1924 in Grayson County, the son of Robert Lee and Lillie Matilda Privett Tolliver. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II.
Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph D. and Ruth Ann Tolliver, Bel Air, Md., Curtis L. and Susan Tolliver, Level, Md., and Jimmie D. Tolliver, Troutdale; daughter-in-law, Robin Tolliver, Fawn Grove, Penn.; four grandchildren, Jeremy Tolliver, Amy Tolliver, Angel Tolliver and Joseph Tolliver. Funeral services were held Monday, July 31, at 11 a.m. in Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel in Independence with the Rev. Fred E. Jennings officiating. Interment was in Troutdale Cemetery. Military rites were conducted by Grayson County VFW Post 7726. Memorial contributions may be made to Troutdale Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 160, Troutdale, VA 24378. Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence was in charge of arrangements.

VanHoozier
Daisy Abel VanHoozier, age 89, died Saturday, July 29, 2000 at the home of a daughter.
She was the widow of William E. VanHoozier. Surviving are two daughters, Katheryn V. Blevins, Seven Mile Ford, and Betty V. Dungan, Marion; one son, Charles P. VanHoozier, Seven Mile Ford; four sisters, Mattie Wyatt, Mary Abel, both of Tannersville, Sallie VanDyke, Lebanon, and Nell Monk, Tazewell; one brother, Robert Abel, Tannersville; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one son-in-law, A.I. Dungan, Marion; one daughter-in-law, Gladys P. VanHoozier, Seven Mile Ford; three special friends, Nancy Hart, Betty Walker and Elizabeth Fenner.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Aug. 1, at 11 a.m. in Williams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles E. Blevins officiating. Burial was in Middle Fork Cemetery.

Arnold
Patricia Ann Arnold, age 41, of Glade Spring, died Monday, July 24, 2000.
A lifelong resident of Washington County, she was a daughter of the late Carl "Mose" and Carrie Owens. She attended Glade Hills Church of God and was employed with Stringer's Restaurant in Abingdon.
Ms. Arnold was also preceded in death by one brother, Garland C. Owens.
Surviving are one son, Benji Widener of Hampton; one daughter, Alicia Ann Widener of Abingdon; two sisters, Mae Moorefield of Damascus, and Wanda C. Tuggle of Glade Spring; two brothers, Robert J. Owens of Glade Spring, and Cecil C. Owens of Chilhowie; three grandchildren, Desirae M. Widener, Alexis M. Schanze and Tara Emily Cullop; several nieces and nephews; and special loved ones, David Widener and Donnie Arnold.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 28, at 2 p.m. in Glade Hills Church of God with the Rev. J.L. DeBord and Leslie Hayden officiating. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Glade Spring.
Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon was in charge of arrangements.

Davidson
Mary L. Davidson, age 67, of Memphis, Tenn., died Wednesday, July 19, 2000, in Memphis, Tenn.
Survivors include her husband, Isaac Davidson; four daughters, Debbie Jones, Theresa Sigler, and Carol Shumann, all of Bartlett, Tenn., and Charlotte Gay of Auburn, Ga.; one son, Don Davidson of Memphis, Tenn.; her mother, Helen Schmidt of Pocahontas, Ark.; three sisters, Mildred Gain of Memphis, Tenn., Barbara Weaver of Kennett, MO, and Frances Fornoroto of Brick, NJ; one brother, Thomas Schmidt of Jonesboro, Ark.; 12 grandchildren, including Christy Atwell and husband Dean of Marion; one great-grandchild, Paxton Liberto; her former grandson-in-law, Paul Liberto of Marion.
Funeral services and burial were held in Memphis, Tenn.

Carl Joseph "Mose" Owens, age 69, of Glade Spring, died Monday, July 24, 2000.
A lifelong resident of Washington County, he attended Glade Hills Church of God and was the widower of Carrie Lee Owens. He was also preceded in death by a son, Garland C. Owens; and a daughter, Patricia Ann Arnold.
Surviving are two sons, Robert J. Owens of Glade Spring, and Cecil C. Owens of Chilhowie; two daughters, Mae Moorefield of Damascus, and Wanda C. Tuggle of Glade Spring; five sisters, Frances Thomas of Meadowview, Katherine Sipes of Bristol, Louise Doss of Glade Spring, and Nancy Davis and Barbara Barnes, both of Marion; five brothers, Charlie Owens of Marion, Weaver Owens of Glade Spring, Junior Owens of High Point, N.C., James Owens of Damascus, and Eugene Owens of Meadowview; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 28, at 2 p.m. in Glade Hills Church of God in Glade Spring with the Rev. J.L. DeBord and Leslie Hayden officiating. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Owens
Carrie Lee Owens, age 69, of Glade Spring, died Monday, July 24, 2000.
A lifelong resident of Washington County, she attended Glade Hills Church of God in Glade Spring and was the widow of Carl Joseph "Mose" Owens. She was also preceded in death by one son, Garland C. Owens; and one daughter, Patricia Ann Arnold.
Surviving are two sons, Robert J. Owens of Glade Spring, and Cecil C. Owens of Chilhowie; two daughters, Mae Moorefield of Damascus, and Wanda C. Tuggle of Glade Spring; two sisters, Dorothy Widener, Minnie Faye Widener, Margie Thomas and Edna Thomas, all of Glade Spring; four brothers, Elihu Barlow and Eugene Barlow, both of Glade Spring, Buster Barlow of Sugar Grove, and Earnest Barlow of Chesapeake; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 28, at 2 p.m. in Glade hills Church of God with the Rev. J.L. DeBord and Leslie Hayden officiating. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Romans
James Martin "Marty" Romans, age 18, of Manassas, died Tuesday, July 25, 2000 at Inova Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church.
Mr. Romans was a member of Old Dominion Baptist Church in Nokesville and was a student at Osbourn High School in Manassas.
Survivors include his foster parents, Sadie and Chuck Swanston of Manassas; his father and stepmother, Terry and Sandy Romans of Wytheville; his mother and stepfather, Belinda and Ernest Sage Sr., Marion; two sisters, Rebecca Romans, Wytheville, and Beverly Sage, Marion; one brother, Eric Sage, Marion; five stepsisters, Dixie Sage, Cedar Bluff, Delena Martin, Sugar Grove, Donna Gray, South Carolina, Melissa Samuels Arnold and Jennifer Samuels, both of Wytheville; three stepbrothers, Ernest Sage Jr. and Early Sage, both of Saltville, and Christopher Samuels of Wytheville; three foster sisters and two brothers-in-law, Teresa and Pat Mullen of Dumfries, Angela Swanston of Clearwater, Fla., and Joe and Debbie Merrill, Elizabeth City, N.C.; paternal grandmother, Betty Sexton, Bluefield; maternal great-grandmother, Ida Henderson, Marion; step-grandmother, Lillie Slate, Wytheville; six nephews and four nieces.
A memorial service will be held today, July 29, at 2 p.m. at the Original Church of God in Wytheville. Friends may visit at the home of his father, Terry Romans, or his mother Belinda Sage, anytime.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, July 30, at Price Funeral Home in Manassas.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 31, at 10:30 a.m. at Old Dominion Baptist Church in Nokesville with Pastor Bob Perdue officiating. Interment will be at Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Original Church of God, Wytheville, in memory of James Martin "Marty" Romans.
Price Funeral Home in Manassas is in charge of arrangements.

Salmons
Eugene Salmons Sr., age 76, died Wednesday, July 26, 2000 at his home in Marion.
Mr. Salmons was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army and he was a retired police officer with 35 1/2 years of service in Norfolk, Virginia. Mr. Salmons was a good provider for his family, was always willing to help others and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by three daughters, Brenda Hutson and Louise Fedorchuk, both of Marion, Patty Gainey of Hartsville, South Carolina; one son, Eugene Salmons Jr. of Millers Creek, North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Deborah Russell, Jeannie Gainey, Samantha Gainey, Danielle Hutson, Nicholas Futrell, Robert Fedorchuk and Michael Fedorchuk. Five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 29, 2000 at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Rev. Jerry Alley officiating. Burial will follow at Round Hill Cemetery with full military rites conducted by Marion VFW Post #4667.

Sawyers
E. Wayne Sawyers, age 53, of Dublin, died Monday, July 24, 2000 in the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.
Mr. Sawyers was born in Smyth County to the late Ernest and Jessie Dolinger Sawyers. He was a graduate of Emory & Henry College and the William & Mary School of Law. He received the Tradition of Excellence Award from the Virginia State Bar Association.
Mr. Sawyers was the past chairman of the New River Salvation Army and also a member of the Easter Seals Society. He practiced law for over 27 years and was a substitute judge.
He was a member of the Furnace Hill Lutheran Church in Marion.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Sawyers; one daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Brian Lambert, Charlotte, N.C.; one grandson, William Lambert; two sisters, Carol Lucus, Radford, and Kay Lynch, San Jose, Calif.; his dog and special companion, Benjamin; special brother-in-law, Chuck Sawyers; many close friends and family.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 27, at 2 p.m. in Furnace Hill Lutheran Church in Marion with Pastor Ed Schaack and Vicar Alex Hoffner officiating. Interment followed in the Attoway Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to the Salvation Army or to the Easter Seal Society.

Testerman
Dewey William "Bill" Testerman, age 58, died Wednesday, July 26, 2000.
He is survived by his wife, Rita Brantley Testerman of Sarasota, Florida; one daughter, Leigh Ann Cook of Concord, North Carolina; two sisters, Kaye Bailey of Smithville, North Carolina and Faye Ferrell of Richmond; his grandmother, Cleo Testerman of Marion; one grandchild, Carra Raye Cook.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 29, 2000 at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Rev. William T. Wing III officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, c/o Joyce Blevins, P.O. Box 905, Marion, Va. 24354 or the Hospice of Smyth County, P.O. Box 843, Marion, Va. 24354.
The family will receive friends Saturday, July 29, 2000 from 10 - 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel.

Umbarger
Anna Elizabeth Umbarger, age 88, of Chilhowie, died Tuesday, July 25, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Ms. Umbarger was a daughter of the late Milton Brown and Mary Josephine Cole Umbarger. She was a retired employee of TWA Airlines and a member of the Mountain View United Methodist Church.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Willard Umbarger and John Milton Umbarger; and one sister, Virginia Eleanor Vicars.
Surviving are one sister, Eula Mae Conner of Agaura Hills, Calif.; several nieces and nephews; several cousins.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, July 27, at 7 p.m. in Williams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John H. Graham officiating. Graveside services were held Friday, July 28, at 11 a.m. in Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Mountain View United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1722, Chilhowie, VA 24319.

LELIA DUNCAN AKERS
FLOYD - Lelia Duncan Akers, age 84, passed away Saturday, July 15, 2000 at New River Valley Medical Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin Ralph Akers.
Survivors include: one daughter, Lois Akers Tatum, Floyd; two sons, Lloyd W. Akers, William D. Akers, Floyd; three brothers, Vance Duncan, Fred Duncan, Christiansburg, Percy Duncan, Radford; eight grandchildren, 15-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 17, 2000 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Kenneth Hopkins and Elder Raymond Goad officiating. Burial followed in the White Rock Cemetery.
