William June Edwards

DANVILLE, Va. - William June Edwards, 71, of 835A Colquhoun St., died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at his residence.

Born Aug. 8, 1931, in Pittsylvania Co., he was the son of William Elliott and Bessie P. Wilson Hairston.

He was married to Carolyn Coleman Edwards.

In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by two daughters, Lora "Niki" Wimbush and Valerie Venable, both of Danville; three sons, William Garrett Edwards and Daryl Edwards, both of Danville and Michael A. Edwards of Roanoke.

The funeral will be held noon Saturday at the Christ Temple Holiness Church with Bishop Robert Tapper officiating. Interment will follow in the Floral Hills Memory Garden Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Earl Douglas Fisher

NATHALIE, Va. - Earl Douglas Fisher, 60, of 4152 Cody Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born April 10, 1942, in Halifax County, he was the son of Reginald Vernon Fisher and Dorothy Ingram Fisher, who predeceased him.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Republican Grove.

He was married to Barbara Gibson Fisher.

In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by one son, Steven Douglas Fisher of Nathalie; one daughter, Vicki F. Overby of Virgilina; four grandchildren; and one half-brother, Vernon Lacy "Buddy" Fisher of Nathalie.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one sister, Betty Fisher Angel and one half-brother, Louis J. Fisher.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Republican Grove with the Rev. Shelton Miles officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, please consider the First Baptist Church of Republican Grove.

William 'Red' H. Fitzgerald

DANVILLE, Va. - William "Red" H. Fitzgerald, of 105 Lombody Court, died Monday, January 13 at his residence. Born June 20, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Hester and Cornelia Stone Fitzgerald, who predeceased him. He retired from Donald Salvage Construction Company. He was a faithful member of White Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Dry Fork, Va.

He was married to Mae Jessie Anderson Fitzgerald, who predeceased him in 1998. He is survived by one son, Willis Fitzgerald and daughter-in-law, Myrtle Fitzgerald; his stepmother, Lena Mae Fitzgerald of Danville; two grandchildren, Timothy and Bryant Fitzgerald, both of Landover Hills, Maryland. He is also survived by seven sisters, his twin Lily Kirby of Danville, Luberta Carter and Dorothy Thomas and her husband Conway of Danville, Martha Scates, Geneva Echols and Rosa Medley of Chatham, Beatrice Thomas and her husband John of Dry Fork; three brothers, John Fitzgerald and his wife Lillie of Chatham, Jessie Fitzgerald of Blairs and James Fitzgerald of Ringgold; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. In addition to his wife he was predeceased by four sisters, Irene Bennet, Lizzie Motley, Mattie Crews and Mary Ellen Fitzgerald; and two brothers, Bud Fitzgerald and David Fitzgerald.

The funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday at White Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Edward L. Pope officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the residence, 105 Lombody Court, Danville.

Burnice Harris

CALLANDS, Va. - Burnice Harris, 78, of 1440 Mapleton Drive, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at the V.A. Hospital in Salem.

Born May 25, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William O. Harris and Bell Dickerson Harris.

He was a retired machine operator with Hooker Furniture Company in Martinsville. He attended Schoolfield Primitive Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He was married to Lois Harris.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by three sons, Larry Harris of Rocky Mount, Kenneth Harris of Martinsville, and Bernard Harris of Roanoke; three daughters, Barbara Baize of Dry Fork, Doretha Witcher of Callands and Debra Wilson of Cascade; two sisters, Evelyn Brooks and Beatrice Tarpley, both of Callands; a stepsister, Ethel Swanson of Martinsville; one brother, Emmett Harris of Callands; 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Alvin Harris; five brothers, Willie, Luther, Curtis, Leonder and J.T. Harris and six sisters, Eunice, Essie, Ida, Inez, Rosa and Katie.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Tarpley's Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Divens Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Brooks Family Cemetery.

Haywood Hunt

GRETNA, Va. - Haywood Hunt, 42, of 761 Farmers Mt. Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born March 20, 1960, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of George Hunt and Margaret Hunt, who survives.

He was employed by Saunders Lumber Company in Gretna.

In addition to his mother, of Altavista, and his wife, of the residence, he is survived by two sons, Haywood and Roger, of the residence; two daughters, Gabrielle, of the residence, and Jennifer Martin of Hurt; three brothers, Raleigh Hunt of Altavista, Robert Hunt of Martinsville and George Hunt of Hurt; four sisters, Elaine Stone and Dorothy Waller, both of Hurt and Shirlene Gregory and Katherine Stone, both of Altavista.

The funeral will be held noon Sunday at Miller Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Theodore R. Jones Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the New Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, Hurt.

Wyman R. Kirkland

DANVILLE, Va. - Wyman R. Kirkland, 75, of 4760 Winchester Drive, Titusville, Fla. and 223 Lady Astor Place, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, in Parrish Medical Center, Titusville, Fla.

Born July 24, 1927, in Lyons, Ga., he was a son of William E. Kirkland and Bessie Ganey Kirkland.

He was a retired pharmacist and co-owner of Modern Pharmacy. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia at Athens and was a registered pharmacist in Virginia and Georgia. He was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, the Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge #122 and a 32nd Degree Mason of the Danville Scottish Rite. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II.

He was married to Lois Rorrer Kirkland.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two sons, W.R. Kirkland Jr. of High Point, N.C. and Phillip Michael Kirkland of Danville; two brothers, William E. Kirkland Jr. and William B. Kirkland, both of Lyons, Ga.; two sisters, Angelina Crum of Albuquerque, N.M. and Betty Crum of Titusville, Fla. and three grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Elizabeth Kirkland and a granddaughter, Kathryn Kirkland.

The graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Jonathan Bennett officiating.

Harriett Garrett Lea

DANVILLE, Va. - Harriett Garrett Lea, 93, of Riverside Health Care, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born May 9, 1909, in Danville, she was the daughter of Willard Hayes and Mary Bell Williams Hayes.

She was a cook at Averett College.

She was a member of Loyal Baptist Church and a charter member of the Jones Gospel Chorus.

She was married to Charlie F. Lea, who predeceased her.

She is survived by one son, Howard Garrett of Danville; three daughters, Mable G. Anderson, Harriett Poteat and Clara Fuller, all of Danville; one sister, Franklin Brock of Cleveland, Ohio; 21 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Loyal Baptist Church with the Rev. Lovelle Maxwell officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

A viewing will be held from 4-8 p.m. Saturday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.

The family will be at the residence of her daughter, Mable Anderson, 843 Pine St.

Ray Coleman 'Big Man' Richardson

DANVILLE, Va. - Ray Coleman "Big Man" Richardson of 923 Washington Street, the son of the late Charlie and Mary Bell Harris Richardson departed this life on Tuesday, January 14 at Danville Regional Medical Center. He was born February 23, 1947 in Danville, Va.

"Big Man," as everyone called him, attended Danville Public Schools. He attended various churches in his early years. He was preceded in death by both parents, two sisters, Jean and Barbara Dell and one brother, Harry Lee.

He leaves to mourn one aunt, Juanity Millner of Riverside Health Care; one uncle, Willie "Jackie" Richardson of Danville; one sister, Shirley Harris of Philadelphia, Penn.; four brothers, Charles Richardson of Atlantic City, N.J., Frankie Richardson and his wife Cynthia, Ralph and Claude Richardson and his wife, Marie, all of Danville. There is also a host of nieces, nephews and friends that love him very much.

A viewing will be held Friday, January 17 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home. The family will be at the home of his brother, Claude and Marie Richardson, 431 First Street.

Graveside services for Mr. Richardson will be conducted Saturday, January 18 at 11:00 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Arthur Crews officiating.

Billy Greenwood Rigney

CHATHAM, Va. - Billy Greenwood Rigney, 67, of 6341 Sago Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at his residence.

Born May 24, 1935, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Averette Rigney and Mary Scearce Rigney.

He was a member of Oak Ridge Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Harris Rigney of the residence; a son, Carey Rigney of Chatham; two sisters, Exie Adkins and Clara Mae Rigney; a brother, Larry Rigney, all of Hurt; a granddaughter; three step grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Jerry Rigney.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Oak Ridge Christian Church with the Rev. Kenneth McFarling officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family received 7-8 p.m. Thursday at Oak Ridge Christian Church and at other times will be at the residence.

Mary Gilbert Simpson

DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Gilbert Simpson, 87, of 432 Hermitage Drive, Outlook Pointe, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003 in Stratford Health Care Center.

Born Jan. 26, 1915, in Danville, she was the daughter of George B. Gilbert and Fannie Jefferies Gilbert.

She was a graduate of Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Va. She was a bookkeeper.

She was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church.

She was married first to Pringle Jennings Myers, who predeceased her in 1976.

She was later married to Ray Simpson, who also predeceased her.

She is survived by two daughters, Ann Saffell of Roswell, Ga. and Mary Jane Bradley of Fredericksburg, Va.; and two grandchildren.

In addition to her husbands, she was also predeceased by four brothers, Jeff Gilbert, Hobert Gilbert, Jack Gilbert and Starling Gilbert.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Steve Carlton officiating.

The family will receive friends after the funeral.

The family suggests that memorials may be made to your favorite charity.

James Robert 'Bob' Southern

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - James Robert "Bob" Southern, 49, of Main Street, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 2, 1953, in Caswell County, he was the son of James Robert Southern and Lenora Hunt Southern, who predeceased him.

He was a member of Temple of Christ Church in Milton and was a construction worker.

He is survived by one daughter, Trevia Farrish of Yanceyville; two sons, James Robert Southern III and Lamar Southern, both of Danville; three sisters, Onnie Mae Southern, Deanne Southern and Betty Southern, all of Yanceyville; one brother, Henry Southern of Roxboro; and two grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one sister, Jackie Southern and one brother, John Southern.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Bibleway Church of Yanceyville with Bishop Nelson Luck officiating. Interment will be in the Hamer Baptist Church Cemetery, Blanch, N.C.

The family visitation will be held 7-8 p.m. Friday at Fulton Funeral Home Chapel. At other times they will be at the residence of his sister, Onnie Southern at 208 Hooper Ave.

Nellie Inez Pleasant Strader

RUFFIN, N.C. - Nellie Inez Pleasant Strader, 80, 7739 Park Springs Rd, Ruffin, N.C., died Thursday, January 16, 2003 at her home.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Bethel United Methodist Church with Rev. Philip Brown officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

A native of Person County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Ivey E. and Anna May Harris Pleasant and had lived in Caswell County most of her life. She was a retired school teacher with 37 years of service in the Caswell County School System and was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday School for a number of years and was very active in the Caswell County Retired Teacher's Association. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward Gilbert Strader and a brother, Ivey E. Pleasant Jr.

She is survived by one son, Ed Strader and wife Judy; one daughter, Sandra S. Pugh and husband Tom; and one grandson, William E. Strader, all of Ruffin, N.C.

The family will see friends 6:30 till 8:30 p.m. Friday at Citty Funeral Home, Reidsville, N.C. and at other times will be at the residence.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, c/o Kay Satterfield, 7375 Park Springs Rd., Pelham, N.C. 27311.

Nikki Dale Saunders Wilson

CHATHAM, Va. - Nikki Dale Saunders Wilson, of 329 Peach St., died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, at her residence after six months of declining health.

Born in Chatham, she was a daughter of Perry Garvin Saunders and Gladys Nance Saunders.

She lived her entire life in Chatham. She was a member of Chatham Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

She married Larry Arthur Wilson on Jan. 5, 1988.

In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by a daughter, Jill Davidson Helms of Danville and five sisters, Pat Tyree of Danville, Peg Mayhew of Chatham, Bobby Williams of Lynchburg, Perry Ann Gibson of Chatham and Jill Henderson of Birmingham, Ala.

She was predeceased by a son, Chris Davidson.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Danville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with the Rev. Kenneth Terry officiating. Entombment will follow.

The family will receive friends at her sister's residence, Pat Tyree, 153 Capri Court, Danville.

The family suggests memorials may be made to Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church, 3612 Dry Fork Road, Dry Fork, VA 24549.
