Bessie E. Lewis

Bessie E. Lewis, 98, of Clarksville died Monday, July 7, 2008, at Johnson Regional Medical Center.

She was a native of Clarksville, daughter of the late Tom and Sirilda Carlille Cox, widow of Haskell Leon Lewis; charter member of Lamar Baptist Church, member of the Order of Eastern Star, retired cook having been one of the first cooks at Lamar School, and was preceded in death by one daughter, Pauline Casey; one son, Vernon Lewis; and two grandchildren, Jim Casey and Yvonne Bowers.

She is survived by one son, Fred Lewis and wife, Barbara, of Lamar; two grandchildren, Shaun Lewis and Alicia Fuentes and husband, Luis, of Clarksville; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral was at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 10, at Lamar Baptist Church with Rev. Nelson Wilhelm officiating.

Burial was in West Mount Zion cemetery under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Gene Leeds, Shelby Robinson, Brett Robinson, Ricky McCarley, David Graves, and Roger Ost.

Memorials may be made to Lamar Baptist Church.

Betty Brown Davis

Betty J. Brown Davis, 78, of Fort Wayne, Ind., died Friday, June 20, 2008.

She was a native of Knoxville, daughter of the late Vern and Hester Brown, graduate of Lamar High School and former school teacher.

Survivors include her husband, Glen Davis; two daughters, Sheri Winans and Teri Cummins of Indiana; two sisters, Verna Kness of Poland, Ohio, and Bea Molinaro of Knoxville; one brother and sister-in-law, Selby and Mildred Brown of Knoxville; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral was at E. Harper and Son Funeral Home in New Haven, Ind., on June 25.

Charles E. Harris

Charles Edward Harris, 70, of Lamar died Friday, July 11, 2008, at his home.

He was a son of the late Rayburn David and Stella Condley Harvell Harris, retired superintendent, Marine veteran, member of First Baptist Church, attended Bakers Creek Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by one brother, Richard William Lawrence; two great-grandchildren, Keena Hicks and Jacob Merideth; and one great-great-grandchild, Corben Lee Moses.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Jean Gokey Harris; five daughters, Debbie Bass of Bryant, Deanna Savell of Russellville, Elizabeth Genna and husband, Samuel, of Dover, Treva Jacobs and husband, Matt, of Texarkana, and Carree Bunton and husband, Daniel, of Lamar; two sons, Charles Edward Harris II and wife, Nancy, of Ephrata, Pa., and David Harris of Paris; three sisters, Patricia Pruett of Paris, Jean Johnson of Hackett, and Judy Johnson of Greenwood; one brother, Larry J. Lawrence of Magazine; 17 grandchildren, including Austin and Justin Bunton of Lamar; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Graveside services and burial were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, at Annie's Chapel cemetery with Charlie New officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Charles Harris, Samuel Genna, Daniel Bunton, Matt Jacobs, Dean Plank, and David Harris.

Edward Dwight Strong

Edward Dwight Strong, 66, of Humble, Texas, died Thursday, July 8, 2008, at the William D. Bakke Veteran's Memorial Hospital.

He was a son of the late Gayland and Ruby Porter Strong, 1959 graduate of Clarksville High School, attended Arkansas State Teachers College and the University of Arkansas, served in the U. S. Army, volunteer firefighter, employed as a freight operations manager with American Airlines until his retirement, and was preceded in death by one sister, Sonia Strong Pendergrass.

Survivors include his wife, Olga Strong; one stepdaughter, Marley (Mark) Berne of Kingwood, Texas; one stepson, Wilfredo Perdomo of Humble, Texas; one sister, Gaye (George) Taylor of Clarksville; one cousin, David Strong Taylor of Clarksville; one niece, Sarna Pendergrass (Wilma Bauer) of Circle Pines, Minn.; three nephews, James Johnson (Florence) of Springdale, John Pendergrass (Shelly) of Fort Worth, Texas, and Robert Johnson of Jacksonville, Fla.; three great-nephews; five great-nieces; and one great-great-nephew.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 19, at Oakland cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans, P. O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.

Helen M. Wellborn

Helen Maxine Wellborn, 91, of Clarksville died Monday, July 14, 2008, at her home.

She was a native of Spickard, Mo., daughter of the late Don and Mary Wilburn Wilson, widow of Olen Wellborn, graduate of Cedar Bayou (Louisiana) High School, member of Woodland Baptist Church, and was

She is survived by four daughters, Sharon Bosley of Ripley, W. Va., Patsy Dunn of Cloutierville, La., Joy Stansberry of Ponchatoula, La., and Susan Wheeler of Clarksville; two sons, Kelly Wellborn of Romona, Calif., and Mike Wellborn of Fulton, Ky.; two sisters, Ruth Jennische and Jean Robertson, both of Houston, Texas; 20 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 18, at Woodland Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Milam and Rev. Sam Howell officiating.

Burial will be in Woodland cemetery under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Mike Wellborn, Kelly Wellborn, Ronnie Dunn, Lonnie Dunn, Kay Jennische, and Don Jennische.

Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. Thursday, July 17, at Hardwicke Funeral Home.

Jon Kimble Bowman

Jon Kimble Bowman, 67, of Jacksonville, Fla., died Saturday, July 5, 2008, at Island Park, Idaho.

He was a member of Oceanway Assembly of God Church in Jacksonville, Fla., son of the late Donald Wattis and Dorothy Kimble Bowman, retired car salesman and previous owner of a flying service in Utah.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Nell Stewart Bowman; four daughters, Valena Magill and husband, Brent, of Roy, Utah, Jonna LaNell Gonzalez and husband, Mauricio, of Blounchton, Fla., Patricia Brown of Fort Smith and Stephanie Howard and husband, Jamie, of Iowa; two sons, Delon Vincent Ottley of Ogden, Utah, and Jeffery Redden of Kansas; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral was at 2 p.m. Friday, July 11, at Roller-Cox Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Amos Pledger and Rev. Danny Baggett officiating. Burial was in the Kendall cemetery.

Pallbearers were Nelson Eddy, Brent Magill, Michael Magill, Skip Ketting, Dutch Houston, Jeffery Redden, Jacob Redden, and Mauricio Gonzalez.

Mary Simpson

Mary (Shookie) Frances Brown Hargis Simpson, 73, of Lamar died Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at her home.

She was a retired Alaska Teamster employee, daughter of the late P. J. and Nancy (Georgia) Brown, widow of Gary T. Simpson, and was preceded in death by one son, Michael Hargis; and eight sisters, Ima Champion, Alma Lee Martin, Marie Perkins, Lillian McDaniels, Viola Pilgram, Vivian Brown, Billie Chamberlain, and Lois Carter.

She is survived by one daughter, Teresa Grady of Hartman; one granddaughter, Christina Grady; two nieces, Andrea Rowell of Knoxville and Pamela Kellison of Lamar; and one nephew, Glenn Chamberlain of Clarksville.

A memorial service will be held at the family home.

Arrangements were under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home.

Ray Gene Pitts

Ray Gene Pitts, 52, of Russellville died Sunday, July 13, 2008, at Chambers Hospital in Danville.

He was a native of Clarksville, son of the late Coy Levi and Gertrude Elizabeth Moffitt Pitts, and employee of Childers Wood Chips and More.

Survivors include his wife, Gabriela Pitts; two daughters, Ryna Pitts and April Williams, both of Russellville; one son, Michael Bruhn of Russellville; four sisters, Bobbie Callahan and husband, Bill, of Deming, N. M., Joyce Hicks and Jerry Pentzer of Hagarville, Ida Lantz and husband, Ron, of Trout Creek, Mont., and Mary Mullinax and husband, Calvin, of Tulsa, Okla.; two brothers, Troy Pitts and wife, Connie, of Deming, N. M., and Willie Pitts and Ann Greenhill of Batson; and one grandchild, Brandon Bruhn of Russellville.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 19, at Roller-Cox Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Amos Pledger officiating. Burial will be in Union cemetery at Fort Douglas.

Active pallbearers will be Willie Pitts, Doyle Hicks, Floyd Callahan, David Johnson, Bobbie Childers, and CR Mullinax.

Honorary pallbearers will be Donnie Hicks, Coy Hicks, Jerry Hicks, Les Lantz, Vince Lantz, Bryan Pitts, Lantz Pitts, Stormy Mullinax, and Michael Bruhn.
