Erick Zion Acord
Erick Zion Acord, 85, of Ozark, father of Paul Lewis Acord of Ozone, died Friday, March 31, 2006, at Fort Smith.
He was a native of Franklin County, son of the late Ted and Hester Pippin Acord, member of River Valley Community Church of Ozark, Army veteran of World War II, retired line superintendent for Oklahoma Gas and Electric, and was preceded in death by one son, Kenneth Don Acord; and three brothers, Vurl Acord, Hadley Acord and Dale Kenneth Acord.
Survivors include his wife, Cleo Keith Acord; one daughter, Vicki Waldon of Rogers; two other sons, Gary Lee Acord of Ozark and Tim Acord of Rogers; one brother, Paul Foise Acord of Ozark; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral was at 10 a.m. Monday, April 3, at Shaffer Funeral Home Chapel in Ozark with Rev. Jan Akins officiating. Burial was in cemetery Ridge at Ozark.
Active pallbearers were Jim Acord, Wayne Davis, Lonnie Tolbert, Richard Hardy, Jack Keith and Joe Kennedy.
Honorary pallbearers were the elders of the River Valley Community Church.

Ewell Pyron
Ewell Pyron, 97, of Ozark died Saturday, March 25, 2006, in Houston, Texas.
A native of Johnson County, he was a son of the late William Cleve and Lillian Stewart Pyron, a retired employee of Arkansas Valley Electric Cooperative, a member of the First Methodist Church in Ozark, Ozark Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite 32nd degree of the Fort Smith Lodge, and was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Castleberry Pyron.
Survivors include one daughter, Jane Curtis of Conroe, Texas; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services and burial were at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 30, at Highland cemetery in Ozark with Rev. Ron Newberry officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home.
Gertie M. Langston
Gertie Mae Hickey Langston, 93, of Wetumpka, Ala., formerly of Johnson County, died Sunday, April 2, 2006.
She is survived by one son, R. Lynden Hickey Jr. of Houston, Texas; one daughter, Jan (Pete) McCoy of Wetumpka, Ala.; four grandchildren, Jody Lynn (David) Nixon of Cincinnati, Ohio, Leatha Ann (Tommy) Bailey of Houston, Texas, and Peter Lyn McCoy and Carolyn Jeanette McCoy, both of Wetumpka, Ala.; eight great-grandchildren, Kimberly Lynn (Matthias) Beyer of Berlin, Germany, Carrie Noele Nixon and Jonathan David Nixon of Cincinnati, Ohio, Lettie Catherine Rosenbaum of Abilene, Texas, Andrew Reid McCoy and Christopher Lyn McCoy of Wetumpka, Ala., David (Christy) Bailey of Houston, Texas, and Sharon Bailey of Austin, Texas; one stepdaughter, Marlene (Ron) Copeland of Searcy; five step-grandchildren, Danny and Kenny Mabe of Duck River, Tenn., and Aaron, Alexandria and Andrea Copeland of Seacy; and two step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 5, at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home with Pete McCoy and David Nixon officiating.
Graveside services and burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 7, at Minnow Creek cemetery under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home.
Honorary pallbearers will be Peter McCoy, David Nixon, Terry Baker, and Marty Rucker.
Visitation will be Thursday, April 6, at Roller-Cox Funeral Home.

Howard (Red) Hickey
Howard (Red) Hickey, 89, son of the late Charles J. and Ada O'Neal Hickey, formerly of Johnson County, died Thursday, March 30, 2006, in Aptos, Calif.. He had resided the past eight years at Dominican Oaks retirement community in Santa Cruz, Calif.
Hickey attended the University of Arkansas where he earned a spot on the Razorback's all-decade team in football and was also a first team all Southwest Conference forward for the school's 1941 NCAA Final Four basketball team.
He coached San Francisco from 1959-63, going 27-27-1 before resigning three games into the 1963 season. He also played on the Cleveland Rams' 1945 championship team, was an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Rams' title club in 1951, and spent two decades as an assistant and scout for the Dallas Cowboys.
Hickey was the NFL coach who invented the shotgun offensive formation with the 49ers. He made history in 1960, when he combined elements of a punt formation, a spread passing attack and a double-wing formation invented by Stanford's Pop Warner into the shotgun, so named by Hickey because it sprayed receivers around the field.
He was a World War II veteran and was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years Cecelia Surina Hickey.
Survivors are three sons, Michael, Patrick and Jeffrey; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Bailey; and several nephews and nieces including Cathryn Blackard of the Hickeytown Community.
A memorial service was held in California. The body was cremated.
James C. Pledger
James C. (Jim) Pledger of Danville, brother of John Pledger of Clarksville, died Friday, March 31, 2006.
He was a graduate of Danville High School and Arkansas Tech University and served on the Danville School Board and the ATU Board of Trustees, acting as president of both boards. He also served on the ATU Business School Advisory Council, was a member of the Danville United Methodist Church, served as Yell County Treasurer, president of the County Treasurers Association and president of the Association of Arkansas Counties.
He later joined the administration of Governor Bill Clinton where he served as legislative liason, chief of staff, commissioner of revenue, and director of the Department of Finance and Administration. He also served in the administration of Governor Jim Guy Tucker as director of the Department of Finance and Administration and chief of staff.
He was manager of the Yell County Fair for many years, member of the Arkansas Fair Managers Association, having served as secretary and president, and was general manager of the Arkansas State Fair and Livestock Show Association. He was a member of the International Association of Fairs and Expositions, where he served as a director and president of Zone 6, member of the Yell County Chapter of the Arkansas Cattlemen's Association, Danville Lions Club, and board member of the Arkansas 4-H Foundation, the Good Shepherd Ecumenical Retirement Center and the Chambers Bank board of directors. He was inducted into the Arkansas Fair Managers Hall of Fame, ATU Hall of Distinction and the Arkansas Agricultural Hall of Fame, and was the recipient of the Charles Smith Memorial award, UALR Good as Gold award, Farm and Ranch Club Col. T. H. Barton award, and state of Arkansas Governors Quality award.
Survivors include his wife, Geneva Pledger; two daughters, Martha Cahill of Morrilton and Courtnie Pledger of Conway; two grandsons, Drew and Tyler Cahill of Morrilton; and one other brother, Bill Pledger of Conway.
Funeral was at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 2, at Danville United Methodist Church. Arrangements were under the direction of Cornwell Funeral Home.

Bob E. Reynolds Sr.
Bob Eugene Reynolds Sr., 69, of Clarksville died Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at his home.
He was employed by Automotive Recycling Center as a maintenance supervisor, attended Hedgeway Church, paratrooper of the 101st Air Borne Division of the U. S. Army, son of the late Ralph Griggs and Cleo Reynolds, and was preceded in death by one sister.
Survivors include four daughters, Becky Babson of Brookville, Pa., Judy Jenkins of Missouri, and Gail Britt and Tracy Barton, both of Clarksville; one son, Bob Reynolds Jr. of Virginia; one brother, John Reynolds of Clovis, Calif., two sisters, Tami Kiethley of Duncan, Okla., and Katherine Lewis of Eureka, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 25, at Roller-Cox Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Zeiler officiating. The body was cremated.
Charles R. Broomfield
Charles Ray Broomfield, 65, of Barling died Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at his home.
He was a son of the late James Edward and Inice Duke Broomfield and employed in the concrete industry.
Survivors include one daughter, Deborah Robinson of Coal Hill; one son, Charles Travis Broomfield of Ozark; one brother, Ralph Broomfield of Fort Smith; three sisters, Mildred Leavell and Mickey Ruth Nichols, both of Clarksville, and Dors Woods of Bloomer; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 29, at Roller-Cox Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. J. D. Ellison officiating. Burial will be in Coal Hill cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Chris Brown, Gene Norried, Ben Heath, Scott Finney, Gerald Marcum, and Donnie Leavell.
Honorary pallbearers will be Ralph, Justin and Cole Broomfield.
