Elsie Ellen Evans

Elsie Ellen Evans, age 67, resident of Hatton, died Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005 in Mena.

She was born April 8, 1938 in the Baker Community in Polk County to Roy and Rita Hathaway Rose; was a homemaker; a member of Hatton Baptist Church; and a foster grandparent at Van-Cove Elementary. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Donnie Evans; a daughter, Teresa Louise Cochran; and a brother, Dale Rose.

She is survived by her husband, Rex Evans of Hatton; a son, Roger Evans of Hatton; a daughter, Sandra Byrd of Vandervoort; three brothers, Raymon Rose of Van Nuys, Calif., Lester Rose of Maybank, Tex., and Norman Rose of Amarillo, Tex.; four sisters, Irene Milan of Wickes, Doris Harp of Graham, Tex., Janice Rose of Garland, Tex., and Alice McKenzie of Wickes; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6 in Baker cemetery in Wickes with Bro. Chris Burke and Bro. Harold Davis officiating, under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.

Hal Robbins

Hal Robbins, 90 of North Little Rock, died Thursday, October 13, 2005 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Little Rock

Hal was born in Mena, Arkansas and lived and attended school in several communities in southwest Arkansas. After graduation from Ashdown High School, Hal attended Texarkana Junior College and then received a degree in chemistry from the University of Texas. Afterwards, he was in the wholesale oil business with his father in De Queen.

During World War II, the science teacher at De Queen High School was drafted and Hal was asked to complete the year. He continued until 1949 as teacher and principal at De Queen High School, in the meantime completing a Master's degree in school administration at the University of Arkansas.

In 1949 Hal became principal of Conway High School, a position he held until 1964. He then joined the staff of the Arkansas Education Association where he was a strong advocate of teachers' rights. He also worked with desegregation and legal issues and with kindergarten teachers. He retired from his position as assistant executive secretary of AEA, but continued to work with the organization on a part-time basis as well as working as an investigator for the Mitchell, Blackstock, Barnes, Wagoner, Ivers, and Sneddon Law firm. He was a Rotarian and member of Lakewood United Methodist Church. Hal was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Donia Robbins; a brother, Jerry M. Robbins; his wife of 58 years, Barbara Rogers Robbins and a son, Jon Robbins.

He is survived by his sons, Jerry H. Robbins of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Don Robbins, of Sherwood, and a brother, Loyce Robbins of Benton.

Funeral service were at the Lakewood United Methodist Church 1922 Topf Road, North Little Rock, on Monday, October 17, at 2:00 p.m. Graveside ceremonies and burial were in Crestlawn Memorial Park near Conway immediately after the funeral service.

A visitation was at Roller-Owens Funeral Home (791-7400), Sunday, October 16, from 3-5 p.m.

Robert Archie Emerson

Robert Archie Emerson, age 81, resident of Texarkana, Tex., died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2005 in Christus St. Michael Health System.

He was born Jan. 27, 1924 in Lockesburg to John and Bessie Wilson Emerson; graduated in 1955 from Henderson State Teachers College; was a retired industrial engineer; retired from the U.S. Navy; a member of First Baptist Church in Arkadelphia; was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict and served in the Sea Bees. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jimmie Thomas Emerson; one son, Lance Emerson of Tyler, Tex.; one daughter, Lori Tarnow of San Antonio, Tex.; four sisters, Frances Yates and Delia Goins, both of Texarkana, Tex., Bessie Torgeson of Washington State, and Lynda Monroe of Horatio; and four grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2 in Oddfellows cemetery in Lockesburg, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Windcrest United Methodist Church Youth Ministry, 8101 Midcrown, San Antonio, Tex. 78239-2597.

The family will be at their home in Texarkana.

Iva Nell Hogg

Iva Nell Hogg, age 91, resident of Mountain View, died Friday, Nov. 18 in Batesville.

She was born July 27, 1914 in Horatio to Claude and Mary Dobbins Barnes; was a homemakers; and a member of Northside Baptist Church in Yuba City, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Lora Smith, Dora Young, Lucille Killian, and Mary Lois Gross; brothers, Ursel Barnes, Jim Barnes, Dale Barnes and Walter Barnes; and one grandson, Donnie Joe Hogg.

She is survived by two sons, Joe Edwin Hogg of Mountain View and Herman Hogg of Eldorado Hills, Calif.; one sister, Edwina Alexander of Dierks; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21 in Green’s Chapel cemetery at Dierks, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home, De Queen.

James Oscar Frachiseur

Mr. James Oscar Frachiseur, age 89, a resident of Grannis, Ark., died Saturday, November 5, 2005 in Grannis.

He was born May 7, 1916 in Grannis to Jim and Anner Maddox Frachiseur. He was a retired serviceman for Lane Poultry, and was an Army veteran of WWII, where he was a Purple Heart recipient.

Mr. Frachiseur was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Illfay Coffey Frachiseur; a son, James Olton Frachiseur; a granddaughter, Patricia Oneda Fain; and four brothers, M. C., Nathan, Roy, and Johnny Frachiseur.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Oneda and Jim Fain of Grannis; one son and daughter-in-law, Edwin and Shirley Frachiseur, also of Grannis; six grandchildren, Rick Frachiseur, Scott Frachiseur, Charlotte Johnson, John Frachiseur, Monte Fain, and Shanon Frachiseur; 12 great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Bob, Jim and Abe Frachiseur.

Funeral services for Mr. Frachiseur were held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 8, 2005 in the Holly Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Grannis with Revs. George Frachiseur and Homer Frachiseur officiating. Burial followed in the Holly Grove cemetery under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.

The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, November 7, 2005 at the funeral home.

Effie Mae Kennedy Smith

Effie Mae Kennedy Smith, age 96, a resident of De Queen, died Tuesday, November 1, 2005, in De Queen Medical Center.

She was born October 8, 1909 in Provo, Ark. to Z.K. and Addie Kennedy. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of De Queen, where she was one of the original members of the T.E.L. Sunday School Class, an over 50 year member of Chapter 241 of the Eastern Star, and was employed by Ben Franklin's 5 & 10, Waltrip's Department Store and Mabry's Department Store.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John L. Smith; her children, Obria Smith, Oron Smith, Pauline Vickers Black, Martin Kenneth Smith, Henry Smith, Edward Smith, and Marion Smith; her brothers, Willie Kennedy, Luther Kennedy and Floyd Kennedy; her sisters, Flossie Larremore, Hazel Clark and Violet Luttrell.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Jerry Ann and Omagene Morris of De Queen; her daughters-in-law, Wanda Smith and Nadine Smith of De Queen, and Carolyn Smith of North Little Rock, Ark.; her sister, Zelmarie Crosby of Ventura, Calif.; her brother, Louis Kennedy of Van Nuys, Calif.; her grandchildren, Kenneth Moore, Tommy Moore, Linda Gentry, Larry Vickers, J.D. Smith, Keith Smith, Sharon Miesner, Stacy Smith, Randy Smith, Vickie Verser, Steve Smith, Eddie Smith, Ramona Standridge, Jeannette Smith, Inis Smith, Valerie Revels, Brenda Kramer, Quintin Morris, Kenneth Carroll, Jr., Pollyanna Smith, Barbara Batchelor, and J.F. Morris; 46 great grandchildren, 31 great-great grandchildren, one great-great-great grandchild.

Funeral services for Mrs. Smith were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 4, 2005 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Coy Arnold officiating. Burial followed in the Redmen cemetery.

The family received friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, November 3, 2005 at the funeral home.

John Hammonds Watkins

John Hammonds Watkins, age 70, resident of Vandervoort, died Thursday, Nov. 10, 2005 in Little Rock.

He was born Feb. 19, 1935 in Hartley to the late Homer Coyle and Minnie Othella Hammonds Watkins; was a farmer; a member of Vandervoort First Baptist Church; and a United States Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Rhodes Watkins of Vandervoort; two sons, John G. Watkins and James C. Watkins, both of Vandervoort; two daughters, Gloria Strother of Vandervoort and Regina Compton of Farmington; one sister, Joan McCrary of Nashville; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14 in Vandervoort First Baptist Church with Bro. Roy Brooks officiating. Burial followed in Center cemetery under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
