Mrs. Jo Loyd
Mrs. Genova Lee “Jo” Carter Loyd, age 87, a resident of De Queen, died Friday, March 21, 2014 in Brookewood Nursing and Rehab, De Queen.

She was born to Bennett and Effie Wilson Carter in Broken Bow, Oklahoma, on September 15, 1925. She was a former beautician, owned and operated Momma Jo’s Barbeque in Roberta, Okla., as well as a homemaker. She was a member of the Roberta Baptist Church, and enjoyed

fishing, reading, soap operas, sewing, cooking, and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Roy Neal Loyd, her husband, Roy Cecil “Rod” Loyd, her brothers, Murray, Raymond, Weldon, Wilburn, Maurice, Forrest, and Cecil Carter, a sister, Vernie Bell, and a daughter-in-law, Bertha Loyd.

She is survived by one son, Ronald Kent Loyd of De Queen, seven grandchildren,

Angela Jordan of Wright City, Okla., Rodney Loyd of Hot Springs, Charlotte Hames of North Little Rock, Ark., Michael Loyd and Michelle Ritchie both of Whitewright, Texas, Rhonda Loyd of De Queen, and Ronnie Loyd of Broken Bow, Okla., sixteen great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mrs. Jo Loyd will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, March 24th

In the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. David Smith and Bro. Jeff Robinette officiating.

Burial will follow in the Highland Cemetery, Durant, Oklahoma. The family will receive friends at Chandler Funeral Home on Sunday, March 23rd from 2:00 to 4:00 P.m.

Mrs. Louise Talley Lay
Mrs. Louise Talley Lay, age 80, a resident of Atlanta, Texas, and former resident of De Queen, died Sunday, March 16, 2014, at her home.

She was born to Thomas James and Sarah Rachel Irvan Talley in Horatio, Arkansas, on March 29, 1933. She was retired executive assistant at De Queen City Hall, and a homemaker. She was a member of the Open Door Baptist Church in Atlanta, Texas. Louise loved gospel music, and sang in a quartet with her husband for many years. She also enjoyed yard work, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Louise was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Wayne Talley, her sisters, Sarah Marie Taylor Denton, and Shirley Gill, and a step-son, Dennis Lay.

She is survived by her husband of over 35 years, W. “Otis” Lay of Atlanta, Texas, a son and daughter-in-law, Ricky and Robbie Nichols of Jacksonville, Texas, two daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy Barnhill Beach and David Beach of Mountainburg, Ark., Lori and Randy Chandler of Horatio, Ark., a step-daughter, Cheryl and her husband, Emmet Blackmon of Lebanon, Ore., six grandchildren, David Nichols, Jason Nichols, Joe Barnhill, Sarah Barnhill, Camron Bates, and Rachel Yount, Five great-grandchildren, two brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry and Glenda Talley of Tyler, Tex., and Kenneth and Angelea Talley of De Queen, Ark., a sister and brother-in-law, Donna and James Mitchell of Horatio, Ark., a special brother-in-law, Phillip, and his wife, Cynthia Gill of Shreveport, La., a special sister-in-law, Dorothy Crocker of Lewisville, Tex., and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services for Mrs. Louise Lay will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, March 20th in the Williamson Community Church, Horatio, Ark. with Bro. Jimmy Roden officiating, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home De Queen. There will be a visitation after the service.

James Ward

A Christian celebration of the courageous life James Ward, lifetime resident of the New London/Overton, Texas area, will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday March 12, 2014 in the Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home Chapel, Overton, Texas with Reverend Ken Hayman officiating. Burial will follow at Lakewood Memorial Cemetery Henderson. Family visitation will be Tuesday 6:00-8:00 at Cottle-Pearson.

James Passed passed peacefully from this world on Saturday, March 8 in Mt. Pleasant, Texas, at the age of 89. He was born September 18, 1924 in Ozan, Arkansas, to Jeff and Jennie Jackson Ward and attended school in Overton where he participated in track and football. He worked as a messenger for Western Union and in the shipyards at Houston prior to enlisting in the Army Air Corp. While in the service he was a fighter plane mechanic and served in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe and the Europe Air Offensive for which he was awarded the EAME Campaign Medal with six bronze stars, a Good Conduct Medal and Distinguished Unit Badge with one Oak Leaf Cluster.

James will probably be best remembered for his big smile, the courageous efforts to maintain a productive lifestyle following his paralysis, and the mowing services he provided for his neighbors, as well as the Piney Woods Baptist Encampment. He loved his coffee, grandchildren, fishing and camping at Lake Greeson, Ar.

James was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Mollie Sealey Ward; his parents; two brothers, Rev. Freddie Ward and Kenneth Dale Ward; a sister, Betty Freeman.

He is survived by his two daughters, Judy Ward Worthen and husband Philip of Mt. Pleasant, TX, and JoAnn Ward Jones of Hallsville, TX. (and friend Jim Sweeden of Arkansas); brother, Horace Ray Ward of Phoenix, AZ; sister-in-law, Francis Ward of Kilgore, TX and sister-in-law Ann Ward of Henderson, TX; sister-in-law, Thelma Jo Sealey Hays of Tomball, TX; brother-in-law, Travis Sealey and wife Pat of Longview.

James is also survived by six grandchildren: Tina Carver (Jeff), L. Mike Ward (Amy), Paula Mitchell (Gilbert), Jennifer Sorenson (Josh), James Chapman (Kendra), Shellie Cary (James), two step-grandsons Aaron Worthen (Megan) and Adam Worthen; fifteen great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and friends.

Opal Pearl Alexander

Opal Pearl Alexander was born in Las Cruces, New Mexico on August 1, 1923. She departed this world peacefully on March 12, 2014 in De Queen, Arkansas at the age of 90 years 8 months and 12 days.

During her long and wonderful life Opal served and devoted herself in many ways to so many lives, as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to so many. She contributed so many wonderful memories to everyone she came to know and love. She will be remembered for her many years of service as the manager of the Holiday Inn in Idabel, Oklahoma, as well as her many years as a sorority mother to so many young women at New Mexico State University. Many who knew Opal saw her strong spirit in her. We also loved to listen to her stories of her many great adventures she had known over the years. Opal spent so many of her years as a mentor to so many, and lived and defined her life as we all should, that of a free spirit who held back nothing.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, one sister, and her son, Geddy Alexander Mathis.

She is survived by her daughter, Sylvia Mathis of Las Vegas, NV; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Barbara Alexander of Stockton, CA, Don and Jo Ann Alexander of Santa Clara, CA, and Dr. Byron and Carolyn Alexander of Manhattan, KS; five grandchildren, Blair and Virginia Smolar of Maryland, Geddy G. and Kim Mathis of Guthrie, OK, Alex and Marla Mathis of Horatio, AR, Terri Haubner of Broken Bow, OK, and Mark and Olga Mathis of Sherwood, AR; and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends and loved ones of Opal on Friday, March 14, 2014 at Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen, Arkansas from 6-8 p.m.

Faye Runnels Mobbs Brewer

Mrs. Faye Runnels Mobbs Brewer, age 74, a resident of De Queen, died Monday, March 10, 2014 at her home.

She was born on Mother’s Day, May 14, 1939 in De Queen, and enjoyed celebrating her birthday with Mother’s Day. She was a retired secretary for the Sevier County D.H.S., a member of the Kern Heights Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School. She enjoyed performing in the variety show at the Sevier County Museum and was a self-taught pianist who loved playing, and singing gospel songs.

Mrs. Brewer was preceded in death by her father, Charley Runnels; her husbands, Gerald David Mobbs and Ben Tugman; a son, Timothy Gerald Mobbs; and a sister, Charlene Friend.

She is survived by her husband, Harold Brewer of De Queen; two daughters, Gerry Robison of Little Rock, Arkansas and Teresa Evans of De Queen; one son, Jeff Mobbs and his wife Edie of Magnolia, Arkansas; her mother, Agnes Shaw Nix of Lockesburg, Arkansas; a sister, Martie Griffin of De Queen; two brothers, her twin, Ray Runnels of Lockesburg, and Dean Runnels, also of Lockesburg; two step-sons, Dwight and his wife Debbie Brewer of Houston, Texas and Kerry Tugman; two step-daughters, Beverly Brewer Stieben and Laurie Tugman Fisher; 10 grandchildren, and a number of step-grandchildren, great grandchildren, step-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Brewer will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 13, 2014 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Rusty Ross officiating. Burial will follow in the Chapel Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at the funeral home.

Sam Joiner

Sam Joiner, 74 entered Heaven’s gates on Sunday, March 9, 2014 at 7:30 PM. He was a loving husband, father, and friend to everyone in the community.

Sam was the son of L. D. (Bub) Joiner and Stella Joe (Miller) Joiner and was born in Eagletown, OK on Friday, January 13, 1940. He married the love of his life, Juanita (Peevy) Joiner on December 23, 1958 in Broken Bow, OK. They celebrated their 55th Wedding Anniversary on December 23, 2013.

Sam is survived by his loving wife, Juanita, of the home and three daughters, who adored him, and sons-in laws, Cindy and Willie R. (Ranny) Sorrels, Cheryl and Jay Hughes all of Broken Bow, OK and Cathy and Charlie Tallant of DeQueen, AR. Grandchildren; Casey and Colton Sorrels, Melonie (Hughes) Conner, Ashley (Hughes) Lucas, Shane Morphew and Erica (Morphew) Helms and Taylor Tallant; great grandchildren Brenten and Madison Morphew, Kinleigh Helms and Steven, Hannah and Ethan Conner. Also many other loving relatives and a host of friends.

Sam was preceded in death by his mother, father, brother Moss Joiner, sisters Nelda (Joiner) Sullivan and Bobbie Jo (Joiner) Chandler, as well as two other sisters and a brother who passed away during infancy, and a great grandson, Nathan Elliot Conner.

Sam was a hard worker doing carpentry and construction work in his early years. He worked for Dierks Lumber as a painter at various mill locations, and then for Weyerhaeuser Company. Later he ventured into logging as a contractor for Weyerhaeuser and other firms. As their last business venture, for over 30 years Sam and Juanita owned and operated a successful interstate refrigerated trucking company, “Sam Joiner Trucking”. Sam served on the Eagletown School Board for several years as well as volunteered his services where needed throughout the community.

The family requests donations be sent to the following: • Eagletown Cemetery Fund, c/o Shirley Hadley, 508 Parker Road, Eagletown, OK 74734, • Pine Top Cemetery Fund, c/o Alton Peevy, 321 Cougar Trail, Broken Bow, OK 74728.

Visitation will be held at the Bunch-Singleton Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 from 6 PM to 8 PM.

Services will be held at the Eagletown Gymnasium on Thursday, March 13, 2014 at 2:00 PM. Pastors Neal Jackson and Lewis Prewitt, former employees, and Melvin Baker will follow at the Pine Top Cemetery.

Gwendolyn Aimee May

Gwendolyn Aimee May, age 28, a resident of De Queen, Arkansas, died Thursday, February 20, 2014 in Sulphur Springs, Texas.

She was born February 16, 1986 in Idabel, Oklahoma.

Aimee was preceded in death by one daughter, Azaria Nicole Thompson.

She is survived by one daughter, Damaria Thompson of Wickes, Arkansas; father, James May of Wickes; mother, Debra K. Morgan Boyett of Detroit, Texas; two brothers, Paul Morgan of Paris, Texas and James May, Jr. of Nebraska; one sister, Jennifer May; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 12, 2014 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Charles Ligon officiating.
