Edna Rice Carter

Graveside services for Edna Rice Carter, 98, of Little Rock, will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, November 14th at Roselawn Memorial Park. Mrs. Carter, who died Wednesday, was the daughter of Horace Edmund Rice and Nina Jones Rice.

Mrs. Carter is survived by her niece, Jeanne Raines Ayars of Clovis, CA; and four great-nieces: Rev Amanda Ayars of Champaign, IL; Alicia Ayars of Amsterdam, Netherlands; Mrs Laura Hammett Millard of Silver Springs, MD; and Dr. Lisa Hammett of Durham, NC.

Arrangements are by Ruebel Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Pulaski County, 14600 Colonel Glenn Rd, Little Rock, 72210.

Jeanette Whitmore Busby

Jeanette Whitmore Busby, age 83, of Claremore, Oklahoma, formerly of Little Rock, died November 9, 2005. She was born March 25, 1922 in St. Charles, Arkansas to the late C.L. and Mamie Rasco Whitmore and was a member of First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband H.W. “Homer” Busby, who died in 1999, a sister, Alpha White; and brothers Charles and Dick Whitmore.

Survivors include her daughter, Joy Mays and husband Randall; and grandchildren, Jerry Bronson Smith and Lacey Smith, all of Claremore, Oklahoma; a brother, Jack Whitmore and wife Mamie of St. Charles, Arkansas; and several other relatives.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 12, 2005 in the Chapel of Ruebel Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Rex Pilcher. Private burial will follow.

Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Pulaski County, 14600 Colonel Glenn Rd, Little Rock, 72210.

Arrangements are by Ruebel Funeral Home.

Lois Elizabeth Greene Armstrong

Lois Elizabeth Greene Armstrong, age 81, of Little Rock, died on November 8, 2005. She was born in El Reno, Oklahoma, on March 27, 1924 to the late Charles and Bertie Holmes Greene.

Mrs. Armstrong graduated from the Baptist College of Nursing and retired as practicing R.N. in Little Rock. She was a member of East Union Missionary Baptist Church in Hensley, AR. She was a strong supporter of the Pulaski County Humane Society, a member of M.A.R.S. radio group, and C.A.R.E.N. (Central Arkansas Radio Emergency Network). KA5DQG is now signing off.

Mrs. Armstrong was preceded in death by her husband in 1997, Dr. Howard Armstrong; her brothers, Charles Greene, Frank Greene, and Richard Greene and her sister Adabelle Greene. She is survived by her 4 nieces, Judy Carroll, Lois Francis, Vicky Frazier, and Robin Lankford and their husbands. She is also survived by her special friends, Debbie and Bill Thompson of Little Rock.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday in the chapel of Ruebel Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Roberts officiating. Burial will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to the Pulaski County Humane Society, 14600 Colonel Glenn Road, Little Rock, AR 72210.

Gene Whitaker Wood

Gene Whitaker Wood was born January 22, 1928, in North Little Rock, Arkansas, and passed away after a lengthy illness on November 13, 2005 in Houston, Texas.

Gene was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Roy T. Wood; her parents, Andrew and Cora Whitaker; and her brothers Edward Whitaker and Norman Whitaker.

She is survived by her daughter, Roxann Wood Harris and her husband, Robert G. Harris, her granddaughter, Reagan M. Harris, all of Houston, Texas and her sister, Hazel Guenther of North Little Rock, Arkansas.

Gene worked for the Master in Chancery, child support division for Pulaski County for many years. When she lived in Little Rock she was a member of Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church.

She will be missed by family and friends.

A graveside service will be held at Pinecrest Memorial Park on Wednesday, November 16, 2005 at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to The Society for PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy), Executive Plaza III, 11350 McCormick Road, Suite 906, Hunt Valley, MD 21031.

Catherine "Katie" Garrett Wilson

Catherine “Katie” Garrett Wilson, age 76, of Little Rock, died November 11, 2005. She was born in Greenville, MS on January 9, 1929 to the late Charles and Mary Elizabeth Shaffer. She was our mother, an avid gardener, and a member of the Westover Hills Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Henry Garrett and later by her second husband, Jed Wilson. She is survived by her children, Ann and Terry Owens, Buddy and Bridget Garrett, Eva Wilson, Catherine and Rick Tepper, and David Wilson; one brother, Bubba Shaffer; sister, Betty Jo Shaffer, and 9 wonderful grandchildren, Mary Catherine, Hank, Amber, Sarah, Kate, Nicole, Jessica, J.D., and Zoe.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 13, at Ruebel Funeral Home from 2:00 – 4:00 PM with a memorial service immediately following in the Chapel of Ruebel Funeral Home at 4:00. Burial will be at 1:00 PM on Monday at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Greenville, MS.

Frank Skowronski

Frank Skowronski, 90, of Little Rock, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 9, 2005. He is survived by his wife Marie, son John, grandson Ethan, three step-daughters, 11 step-grandchildren, sisters Jean Jones of Florida, Stella Armstrong and Irene Middleton both of California, and one brother, Stanley Kaminski of Virginia.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2-4p.m. Saturday at the Ruebel Funeral Home followed by funeral services at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Trinity Assembly of God Church, 11120 Cantrell Rd, Little Rock. Burial will be in the Arkansas State Veteran’s Cemetery in North Little Rock.

Cora V. Bethel Schachlin

Cora V. Bethel Schalchlin, age 99, of Little Rock, died November 18, 2005 at Beverly Healthcare in North Little Rock. She is survived by her son, Ed Schalchlin, and grandchildren, Tanya, Nicole and Grant all of Sydney, Australia. In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to the American Arthritis Foundation. She is finally resting in peace.

Mary Katherine Wilson Malloy

Mary Katherine Wilson Malloy, age 94, of North Little Rock, died November 21, 2005.

She was born in Yorktown, Arkansas on March 26, 1911 to the late LaFayette A. and Agnes Gocio Wilson. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, North Little Rock, and was active in United Methodist Women and the church quilting club. She was past Chairman of the Margaret Blackburn Circle and an auxiliary member of the Disabled American Veterans.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Joseph Wilson and LaFayette Wilson.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Alvin Malloy; son, Michael Malloy and wife Sharron of Belleville, Illinois; grandchildren, Capt. Kristopher Malloy, who is serving with the USAF in Baghdad, Iraq, Korey Malloy of Fayetteville, and Kimberley Malloy of Belleville, Illinois.

Visitation will be 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, November 23, 2005 at First United Methodist Church, North Little Rock, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at the church officiated by Reverend Steve Copley and Reverend Earl Carter. Burial will follow in Rest Hills Memorial Park.

Memorials, in lieu of flowers, should be made to First United Methodist Church, North Little Rock, or to the Alzheimer's Foundation.

Funeral arrangements are by Ruebel Funeral Home of Little Rock.

Dr. Frank Kumpuris

Frank Gus Kumpuris, MD of Little Rock, one of Little Rock’s outstanding surgeons died on November 2, 2005. He was born on June 15, 1917 the son of the late Gus and Katherine Kumpuris.

He is survived by his wife Kula Makris Kumpuris of Little Rock, two sons; Dean Kumpuris, MD and his wife Mary of Little Rock, Andrew G. Kumpuris, MD and wife Nancy of Little Rock, one daughter Katherine Ann Trotter and husband Scott of Little Rock and eight grandchildren; Katherine Vogel and her husband Jon, Victoria Brown and her husband Stuart, Frank Kumpuris, Andrew Kumpuris, Richard Hahn, William Hahn and Elise Hahn. He was predeceased by one granddaughter, Anne Kumpuris, who died in 1997.

Dr. Kumpuris was a graduate of Tulane University and Tulane University Medical School. He did his internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, surgical residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and was Chief Surgical Resident at St. Mary’s Hospital of the Mayo Clinic. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgery and was the Chief of Surgery at St. Vincent Infirmary in Little Rock. Dr. Kumpuris was owner of Bensky Furs of Little Rock, and was co-owner of MK Distributors of Pine Bluff along with his brother in law, George A. Makris. He was on the board of directors of National Investors Life Insurance Company of Little Rock and later served on the board of Norin, Inc., a publicly traded insurance holding company based in Miami, Florida. Dr. Kumpuris was also on the board of Union National Bank. He was appointed to the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees by Governor Bill Clinton, where he spearheaded the development of the Cammack Campus and the implementation of system-wide educational standards. In addition, he served on the board of the Arkansas Symphony and was president of the Parent and Alumni Board at Washington and Lee University. Dr. Kumpuris was a 25-year member of the XV Club and the Downtown Rotary where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was an active part of the congregation of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church for half a century, donating his time, talents and funds. He was an excellent golfer, an avid duck hunter and enjoyed traveling with his wife, Kula. Frank helped countless people pursue their dreams.

The family would like to acknowledge the loving care of St. Vincent’s HomeCare especially, Pat Sims, Dorothy Jackson and Renee Modica as well as Arkansas Hospice.

A memorial service, officiated by The Reverend Rocki Proffitt, will be held on Friday, November 4 at 11 a.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.

Honorary Pallbearers will be the members of the XV Club.

Memorials in lieu of flowers should be made to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 1000 N. Mississippi, Little Rock, 72207; Easter Seals of Arkansas, 3920 Woodland Heights Rd. Little Rock, 72212; or to the charity of choice.
