John Schad

Brother John Schad, O.S.B., 82, monk of Subiaco Abbey, died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, at Abbey Health Center.

He was born Lawrence H. Schad on Jan. 10, 1916, in Lindsay, Texas, to John and Sophie Schad. He attended St. Peter's School in Lindsay, Texas, graduated from Subiaco Academy in 1935, and spent one year in the college department at Subiaco before returning to the family farm following the death of his father in 1937. In 1942, he was inducted into the Army where he served during World War II in the Pacific. While in the armed service he earned two bronze stars and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal as well as a good conduct medal. After being honorably discharged in 1942, he entered Subiaco Abbey where he made his monastic profession of vows on June 10, 1948, taking the religious name of John. He retired earlier this year after working for 50 years on the abbey farm.

He is survived by two brothers, Father Sylvester Schad of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Edward Schad of Gainesville, Texas; four sisters, Sister Alma Sophie Schad, Sister Vera Schad and Sister Helen Margaret Schad, all of San Antonio, Texas, and Mrs. John P. (Mae) Streng of Muenster, Texas.

A Christian Wake service was held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13, and the Liturgy of Christian Burial was at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 14, in Saint Benedict Church at Subiaco. Interment was in the Abbey cemetery under the direction of Roller Funeral Home of Paris.

John H. Whittmore

John Henry Whittmore, 84, of Witter, father of Gary Whittmore of Hagarville, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at his home.

He was born at St. Paul to Andrew Jackson and Mary Emaline Jones Whittmore and was a farmer.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Pauline Burnett Whittmore; one other son, Vernon Whittmore of Huntsville; one daughter, Bernice Cain of Huntsville; two brothers, L. D. Whittmore of Rogers and Louie Whittmore of Witter; one sister, Lou Ann Wheeler of Prairie Grove; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services and burial were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at Witter cemetery with Rev. Sam Judd officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Brashears Funeral Home of Huntsville.

Pallbearers were Russell Hoskins, Daryl Taylor, Felix Milligan, Landon Hawkins, Sonny Varnell, and Dearl Masterson.

Mrs. Macie Childers

Mrs. Macie I. Childers, 88, of Lamar died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at Sparks Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith.

A native of Lamar, she was a daughter of the late William McGruder and Edna Emma Simpson Selby, widow of Claude C. Childers, member of the Lamar Church of Christ, and was preceded in death by one son, Wayne Childers.

She is survived by six sons, Kenneth Childers of Clarksville, Carl Childers of Richmond, Calif., William Childers of Van Buren, and Argus Childers, James Childers, and Duane Childers, all of Lamar; four daughters, Helen Bouchard of Clarksville, Susie Francis of Orlando, Fla., Gail Newman of Van Buren, and Donna Jackson of Alma; one sister, Florence Zachary of Rodeo, Calif.; 19 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral was at 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, at the Lamar Church of Christ with Rev. Sam Howell officiating.

Burial was in Lamar cemetery under the direction of Shinn Funeral Service of Russellville.

Pallbearers were Selby Brown, Pete Christenson, Bill Jackson, Gene Newman, Bart Langley, and David Clayborn.

Mrs. Mamie B. Young

Mrs. Mamie Bell Roulston Young, 89, of Clarksville died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, at Johnson Regional Medical Center.

She was a daughter of the late George W. and Hattie Peller Roulston, widow of Lester Young, and a Pentecostal.

She is survived by one daughter, Jonnie Lynch of Dardanelle; two sons, Lee D. Roulston of Bradley, Calif., and Robert Roulston of Priest River, Idaho; two sisters, Jessie Brummett of North Ridge, Calif., and Florence Dill of Brinkley; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services and burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16, at Elizabeth Hall cemetery at New Blaine with Rev. Amos Pledger officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home.

Nola C. Justice

Nola C. Justice, 51, of Clarksville died Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, at Baptist Regional Medical Center in Little Rock.

She was a native of Clarksville, member of St. Paul AME Church at Tuckerman, graduate of Grace James High School of Clarksville and attended The College of the Ozarks one year.

She is survived by one sister, Kaye Bagsby Person of Tuckerman; two brothers, Rudolph Justice Jr. of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Michael Justice of Huntsville, Texas; several nieces and nephews; and a cousin, Ann Gilkey of Sherwood.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, at Hardwicke Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Oakland cemetery.

Robert L. Brimer

Robert Lawrence (R. L.) Brimer, 72, of Russellville died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at AMI St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Russellville.

He was a native of Belcher, son of the late Benjamin and Ruth Hutchins Brimer, retired employee of Van Horn Construction, and a Baptist.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Joyce Beatrice Hodges Brimer; two daughters, Sheila Kay Brimer of Conway and Sharon Gay Brimer of Dardanelle; three brothers, Glenn Brimer of McRay, Oneal Brimer of Beebe, and Johnny Brimer of Searcy; two sisters, Leona McGuire of Malvern and Flossie Cato of Conway; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral was at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at Humphrey Funeral Service Chapel in Russellville with Rev. W. H. McCuin officiating. Burial was in Rest Haven Memorial Park at Russellville.

Herman Reed Sitz

Herman Reed Sitz, 81, of Ozark, father of Betty Gilmer of Clarksville, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at his home.

He was a retired employee of Arkansas Valley Electric, Navy veteran, member of Calvary Baptist Church, native of Taft, son of the late William Marion and Dellie Dickerson Sitz, and was preceded in death by one daughter, Reeda Kirby.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Allie Sutherland Sitz; five other daughters, LaRue Walden, Shirley Schaffer and Regina Hice, all of Ozark, Janice Drake of Cumberland, Md., and Donna Pendasula of Calhoun, Ga.; one sister, Cree Veen Slusser of Jonesboro; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral was at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at Shaffer Funeral Home Chapel in Ozark with Rev. Gib Allen officiating. Burial was in Highland cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Hansell Yearta, John Fisk, Michael Kirby, Cebo Dickerson, Lonnie Turner, and Rick Keisman.

Honorary pallbearers were H. B. Bowman and John Keith.

Vernon Betnar

Vernon Betnar, 73, of Clarksville died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at Johnson Regional Medical Center.

He was a native of Pettigrew, retired lumber mill employee, attended Trinity Chapel Pentecostal Church of God, and was preceded in death by one brother, Jim Betnar.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Jean Betnar; two daughters, Brenda Perry of Clarksville and Kay Carmody of Hartman; one sister, Shirley Walker of Clarksville; two brothers, Lavon Betnar and Leon Betnar, both of Clarksville; five grandchildren, Jimmy Miner of Pampa, Texas, Travis Miner of Harrison, Glenda Jay of Russellville, Karen Turpin of Lamar, and Angela Huffman of Lewisville, Texas; eight great-grandchildren; six nephews; and three nieces.

Funeral was at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, at Trinity Chapel Pentecostal Church of God with Rev. Bob Freeman and Rev. Terry Schlinker officiating.

Burial was in Oakland cemetery under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Jimmy Miner, Travis Miner, Ronnie Betnar, Larry Betnar, Gerry Turpin, and Tim Huffman.
