BASEL, Shirley Ann (Tozzi), died peacefully in her sleep Sunday, July 14, 1996 at age 62. Born in Greensburg, PA. Beloved wife of George E. Basel; mother of Karol, George K., Mark and Kris; grandmother to Leila, Tariq, Michael and Lance; survived by sisters, Joy Rand of Punta Gorda, FL and Helen De Vinney of Irwin, PA. Shirley was a registered nurse (B.S.N.), last employed as the Infection Control Nurse for El Dorado Hospital. She was very active in her community and was currently completing her second year as president of the Tucson Women’s Club. She was the immediate past president of The ESO Book Club and the Tucson Chile Peppers Group. She was also a member of the German Heritage Klub. Shirley was a loving and caring person who will be missed by all. Cremated remains will be interred at East Lawn Palms Cemetery on Grant Rd. Arrangements for memorial services pending.

HANNA, Azell A., 90, died July 14, 1996. Mother of Donna Lee Boies of Washington DC, Margie K. Stoy of Boise, ID and Fredericka S. Thielen of Tucson; sister of Iona Grunau of OK; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren also survive. Memorial Service 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 19, 1996 at Rincon Congregational Church, 122 N. Craycroft. Arrangements by BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

HUNTER, Edna V., 78, of Tucson, died July 15, 1996. She is survived by her children: Jerry Hunter of Hawthorne, NV, Charlotte Hunter and Russell Hunter, both of Tucson; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Memorial Service will be held at Serenity Baptist Church, 15520 W. Ajo, Thursday, July 18, 1996, at 2:00 p.m. in the afternoon. Arrangements by HEATHER MORTUARY.

KESICKI, Wanda Genevieve, 82, a long time resident of Tucson for over 50 years, was called home by our Lord Jesus on July 15, 1996. Beloved and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, tireless inspiration to us all. Her gentleness and humility disarming. She was good and kind and blessed all of us who knew and loved her. She was a courageous woman, living her life with great dignity, her generosity was without bounds. She was preceded in death by her precious husband, James Eugene Kesicki; son, Gregory Allen Kesicki of Tucson. Survivors include sons, James Thomas Kesicki of Tucson, Thomas John (Mary Ann) Kesicki of Denver, CO; daughter, Jo Ann Stella Riley of Tucson; sisters, Frances Hayes of Ludington, MI, Jean Genter of Ludington, MI; grandchildren, Jenna Ann Riley of Tucson, Keith Kesicki of Chandler, AZ, and Melinda Canter of Stafford, VA; and many other relatives and friends. It broke our hearts to lose you, sweet Mother, but you didn’t go alone. Part of us went with you. You will not be forgotten, we will love you forever. Your great faith and love for God sustained us all, you were our “rock’. Good-bye dear, precious, precious Mother! Memorial Mass will be Friday, July 19, 1996, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, located at 8650 N. Shannon Rd. Rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, July 18, at St. Mary’s Hospital Chapel, 1601 W. St. Marys Rd. Entombment will be at Holy Hope Cemetery. Arrangements by ARIZONA MORTUARY.

LEYVAS, Antonio T., 78, of Tucson, passed away July 14, 1996. Preceded in death by brother, Candalero “Lalo’ Gavino Trejo. Survived by husband, Albert B. Leyvas; daughters, Maria Elena Sanchez, Rachel T. Leyvas; son, Albert Leyvas; brothers, Mauro and Pete Trejo; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 18, 1996 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at TUCSON MORTUARY, INC., 240 S. Stone Ave., with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered Friday, July 19, 1996 at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of All Saints, 2915 E. 36th St. Interment to follow at Holy Hope Cemetery. LUCKETT, Bruce V., 75, died Sunday, July 14, 1996 in Tucson. Bruce was born September 20, 1920 in Belvidere, IL. He and his wife moved to Arizona in 1974. He was a WWII veteran. He retired from the University of Arizona in 1983. In life, Bruce loved to roam the desert and mountains with his dog, always leaving an area cleaner than he found it; he loved animals, providing food and water to the wildlife around him wherever he lived; he loved natural desert plants and was an avid gardener. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister. He is survived by his wife, Betty; son, Richard Luckett and his family, Debbie, Kelly, Angie and Andrew; his daughter, Sandra Testa, husband Ralph; son, Bill King his wife, Betty; his grandchildren, Brad and Shawn Phipps, David and Debbie Luckett, Sherry Cross, Duane and Ken King, Lisa, Stephen and Billy Graves and Christina Hernandez; and his 10 great-grandchildren. Bruce’s life was made brighter by his niece, Pat Stott, her husband, Paul and their children and grandchildren of Illinois; his nephew, Mike Morris, his wife, Mary of Idaho and their children and grandchildren; a nephew, Dave Luckett of Illinois, a nephew, Gary Luckett and his wife, Luanne of Texas; his sister-in-law, Lois Beneventi; brother-in-law, George Embury of Illinois and a brother-in-law, Dick Tucker of South Carolina; and his extended family, the staff at Hillhaven Valley Center. Bruce was a man of great integrity who enriched the lives of all he met; heaven has gained an honorable, gentle and genuinely nice sole who will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Private family services will be held. Memorials may be made to Community Hospice, 4330 N. Campbell Ave., Suite 256, Tucson, AZ 85718.

LUNDBERG, Lester F., 84, of Tucson, born May 17, 1912 in Minneapolis, MN, died July 13, 1996.
“I am home in Heaven, dear ones; Oh, so happy and so bright! There is perfect joy and beauty in this everlasting light.’
Joining with his beloved wife Molly and son Murray. Survived by daughters, Janice Washam of Tucson and Marcia Hopwood of Minneapolis, MN; and good friend, son-in-law, Duane Washam; 13 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; he will be dearly missed by his loving sister, Helen Bronson of Minneapolis, MN; and nephew, Dean Bronson; brother-in-law, Jerry (Carmie) Murray of FL; sister-in-law, Mary (Bob) Holland of TX, Janet (George) Nelson of FL, Pat (Bob) Hillstrom, Donna (Don) Rosche and Jacquelin Murray of Minneapolis. In his early days he was a dental lab owner, later he was instrumental in building 220 homes for the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. He was also involved in numerous construction projects. But his true passion was his violin and remained a source of enormous interest for him. He became a musicologist as well as an accomplished concert violinist. His wife, his family, his friends, and his music contributed to a rich and rewarding life. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY, 5801 E. Grant Rd., where Funeral Service will be held 1:00 p.m., Friday. Burial will follow in East Lawn Palms Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Tucson Symphony Orchestra.

PHILLIPS, Byron Wayne, Major, USAF, Ret. 62, born November 5, 1933 in Vancouver, British Columbia, passed away July 14, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Shirley J. Phillips; daughter, Julie Patrone; two brothers, R. Earl and R. Lawrence (Carol); a nephew, Aaron Phillips; and nieces, Shana Powell, Joelle Phillips and Amy Wallace. He was a recipient of the distinguished flying cross. Byron and Shirley celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in February. Contributions may be made to the Humane Society, 3450 N. Kelvin Blvd. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 19, 1996 at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd.

QUEBEDEAUX, John L., 77, of Tucson, died July 15, 1996. Survivors include: wife, Lucile of Tucson; son, Thomas Quebedeaux of Tucson; daughters, Loraine (Phil) Whitmore of Portland, OR, Ann (Richard) Cone of Salem, OR; sister, Jeanne Honsal of Albuquerque, NM; grandchildren, Rachel, Michael and Christian Quebedeaux of Tucson. At his request, there will be no Funeral Services held. Those who wish may make a donation to Carondelet Hospice or the charity of your choice in the name of John L. Quebedeaux. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd. (at Speedway).

SMITH, Donald P., 58, of Marana, AZ, died July 13, 1996. Survived by: loving wife and family, Loretta, daughter Erica Lyn and son Matthew James of Marana; mother, Alma; and two brothers of Pennsylvania. Friends may call from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, July 18 at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church, 12101 W. Moore Rd., Marana, AZ. Funeral Services will be held at 9:00 a.m. Friday, July 19 at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church with Fr. Ignacio Gameros officiating. Burial will follow at Holy Hope Cemetery. TURNER, Edgar R., 81, of Tucson, died July 13, 1996. Survivors include: wife, Virginia Turner; eight children; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. ANGULO, Lydia Elias, 90, of Tucson, passed away July 13, 1996. Survived by husband, Antonio Angulo. BALLASH, Bette F., 72, died July 14, 1996. Mother of Lillian “Lili’ Ballash of Tucson, Kurt (Caron) Ballash of CA and Michael (Katharine) Ballash of Portland, OR; sister of Louise Freese of VA and her twin brother, John (Bobbi) Freese of MI, Mary Esther (Don) Reeder of Tucson; grandmother of Elan Ballash. Bette taught school for 20 years teaching drama and English in the Sunnyside District. On behalf of Bette, the family sends her love to her former Sunnyside colleague, students and fellow S.A.G.E. members. Mass will be offered 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 18 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 7651 E. Pima, with Father Harry Ledwith officiating. Burial to follow at Our Lady of the Desert Cemetery. CALENDINE, Billie D., 52, died July 11, 1996. Father of Shane (Kendra) Calendine of Sierra Vista and Shawn (Kay) Calendine of Portland, OR. He was a member of the Alumni Assoc. at the U of A and received his masters degree in Journalism from the U of A. He was also an Air Force veteran and served in the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. In lieu of flowers, donations to Boy Scouts of America, Catalina Council, 5049 E. Broadway, Tucson, AZ 85711 would be appreciated. Arrangements by BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

CZAPEK, Lydia, 78, died July 15, 1996. Sister of Cynthia C. Payne. Lydia was a very active member of Tucson Gem & Mineral Society, Old Pueblo Lapidary Club and Tucson Chapter Embroider’s Guild of America. Gathering of friends from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Thursday, July 18, 1996 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway. ELENZ, Mark Alan, 43 years old, died July 12, 1996. He is survived by his loving sisters, Sandy and Lisa; nieces, Brandy and Taffy; brothers, Russell and Daniel; he will also be sorely missed by his boys, Justin and Rueben; and his beautiful babies: his baby boy, Studley; and his kitty, Margaret and testosterone Terrier Worthington, Ivory and Snuffer. Mark suffered an extended illness and is at last pain free and at peace. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward F. and Helen (June) Elenz; paternal and maternal grandparents as well as his aunt, Gwen. Mark brought laughter and happiness into many peoples lives and will be missedby many. May he rest in peace. Donations may be made in Mark’s name to Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospice, 1802 W. St. Mary’s Rd., 85745 or Metropolitan Community Church, 3269 N. Mountain Ave., 85719.

GARDNER, Stacy Danelle (Wier), 28, completed her life at 9:00 a.m., July 10, 1996, at the Baylor Medical Center where she died as the result of an auto accident earlier that day.
Stacy was born February 12, 1968 in Huntington Beach, CA. She married Richard Gardner, Jr. in 1990, in Tucson, AZ. Most recently they lived in Longview, Texas where Richard (Rico) graduated in May of this year from LeTourneau University. They were visiting Rico’s parents. Richard and Laurie Mae Gardner, Wycliffe Bible Translators, who live in Dallas, TX.
Stacy attended elementary schools in Tucson, middle school in Payson, and high school in Tucson, college in Pennsylvania, where she graduated with degrees in Psychology and Sociology. She had taken courses toward an M.A. at University of Arizona in Tucson, and the University of Texas at Tyler.
Stacy was employed as Executive Director of Communities in Schools for East Texas. Stacy and Richard were preparing to go to Italy where Richard was beginning work with International Inspections in his field of marine engineering. In addition to being a competent administrator, scholar, pianist, and homemaker, she was a wonderful friend to many.
Stacy was preceded in death by her father, Gary Wier. She is survived by her mother, Nola Kilgore, Boise, ID; stepfather, Jack Roszko, Tonopah, NV; sisters, Lori (Brian) Crook, Tucson, Joanna Roszko, Boise; brother, Gary (Pam) Wier, Salt Lake City; father-and mother-in-law, Dick and Laurie Mae Gardner, Dallas, TX; brother-in-law, Nate (Janice) Gardner, Catalina, AZ; nephews, Rodney, Sam and Andrew Crook, and Travis Gardner; nieces, Jessica and Alysha Wier, and Amanda Gardner; as well as her paternal grandmother, Virginia Wier, CA. In addition Stacy had a wonderful group of family and friends too numerous to list.
Stacy lived her life daily for the glory of God and now she is enjoying him forever more.
A memorial service will be held at Casas Adobes Baptist Church, 2131 W. Ina Road, Wednesday 1:00 p.m. Remembrances may be made to Stacy Gardner Memorial Fund #2035426, c/o Fidelity Bank NA, 1430 W. Danieldale Rd., Duncanville, TX, 75137.
