HANNA, Azell Anderson Stoy, was born on April 1, 1906 on a family farm near Silver City, Iowa. Second eldest, Azell at age 12 and her sister (13) took over raising four younger siblings when their mother died. Such rigors in an age before indoor plumbing, electricity or automobiles may have helped form her strong lifetime work ethics. In addition, her quick and curious mind and desire for education were encouraged by her father Israel. At a time when few women even attended college, she graduated from the University of Iowa. There she met and married Earle G. Stoy and the couple had two daughters. Major Stoy was killed in the WWII. After supporting herself and daughters for several years with her teaching and writing skills, she married Army Officer Fred S. Hanna, thus acquiring a third loving daughter. During Col. Hanna’s active duty years the family lived in several states, Austria, Germany and Italy where Azell both studied the languages and cultures and continued teaching. When Col. Hanna chose Tucson for retirement Mrs. Hanna returned to formal education, receiving a Masters in Remedial Reading from the University of Arizona. She worked in Tucson Public Schools and privately tutored youngsters with reading problems. One grateful mother wrote her: I want you to know how very much I appreciate the work you did with M. in special reading. He now has confidence in himself and his abilities. To you, perhaps, he was one child in a long string of children who needed a little extra help and encouragement to succeed; but you made a big difference in his life, and because I love him, in mine. Thank you very much for helping him to become again a happy confident child. Well into her 80's Azell continued new learning (taking Spanish and organ lessons), physical activities (walking three miles a day) and community involvement as a TMC volunteer, member of PEO, Eastern Star, and the Rincon Congregational Church. Azell was proud that all 13 of her grandchildren, following her bent have graduated from college. She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren; by daughters, Donna Lee Boies and her husband Robert of Washington, DC, Margie K. Stoy of Boise, ID, Fredericka S. Thielen of Tucson; sister, Iona Gruenau of Owasso, OK. Memorial Service 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 19, 1996 at Rincon Congregational Church, 122 N. Craycroft.
