BEHAR, Sadie Ida, 83, of Tucson, died January 25, 1997 as a result of an automobile accident. Survived by son, Sanford W. (Barbara) Behar of Tucson; daughters, Leonore (Wayne) Rosen of Lawrence, NY and Gigi Behar of Clearwater, FL; sisters, Ruth (Charles) Ranen of Salem, MA, Inez Eskenas of Kendall, FL; six grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Husband, William Behar died in 1967. Memorial Service, Wednesday, 4:00 p.m. Congregation Ner Tamid, River and Swan, with Rabbi Joseph S. Weizenbaum officiating. Graveside Service, Sunday, 11:00 a.m., Vista Memorial Garden, Miami, FL. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY & CEMETERY.

CARPENTER, Angela Mary Fraser, formerly of Huntington Valley, PA, died peacefully following a brief illness in Tucson, Arizona on January 26, 1997. Born in Farnsborough, England in 1910, widow of the late Philip S.P. Carpenter of Pennsylvania. She will be sadly missed by her loving daughter, Diana of Tucson; her sister, Diana Schott of London, England and her four grandchildren, Justin, Gillian, Carolyn and Malcolm Smith. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 29 at 4:00 p.m. at Sunrise Chapel, Wrightstown Road, Tucson. Everyone is welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations in honor of her memory, may be made to the Integra Hospice and K.U.A.T. of Tucson, Arizona.

DE WOLF, Dr. Hubert Gray 'Bud'86, of Tucson, died January 27, 1997. Survived by his wife of 57 years, Frieda F. DeWolf. Bud came to Tucson as a young boy with his father and two older sisters from Richfield Park, NJ in 1915. DeWolf graduated from Tucson High School and attended the University of Arizona Class of 1934. He went on to receive his degree in dentistry from the University of Southern California in 1937. Upon graduation he began his own dentistry practice in Tucson until his retirement in 1979. During his life Bud received many awards and was an active member in a variety of organizations both public and private. Most notable are, former president of the Southern Arizona Dental Association, State Dental Association and the Arizona State Board of Dental Examiners; recipient of the University of Arizona Medallion of Merit in 1960 for his distinguished service to Tucson, the State and University of Arizona. Bud was also inducted into the University of Arizona Hall of Fame and was honored member of the Tucson Conquistadors and the Mountain Oyster Club. Funeral Service will be conducted Thursday, January 30, 1:00 p.m., St. Philips In The Hills Episcopal Church, 4440 N. Campbell Ave., with The Very Rev. David Gillespie officiating. Interment to follow Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the University of Arizona Scholarship Development Fund, 1111 N. Cherry, Tucson, 85721, the H.G. DeWolf Student Loan Fund or your favorite charity. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY & CEMETERY, N. Oracle & W. Miracle Mile.

GARBELL, Dorothy, 79, died January 28, 1997. Wife of William Garbell of Tucson; mother of Richard Garbell of TX and Harlan Garbell of MN; sister of Leo Berman and Lucille Hirsch both of ILL; half sister of Reuben Berman of CA; three grandchildren also survive. Funeral Services and Interment in Illinois. Arrangements by BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

GRANADOS, Antonio, passed away January 21, 1997 at the age of 69 of a heart failure. He was born in Monterrey, MX on June 13, 1927. He is survived by his wife, Maria Granados; daughter, Ofelia G. Scott (Gregory), Juan Antonio Granados, Oscar Granados (Sonia), Alfredo Granados; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers and three sisters. Memorial Services have been held.

HENSS, Wilhelmina, 75, of Tucson, died Saturday, January 25, 1997. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ferdinand; son, Fred L. Henss and granddaughter, Michelle. She is survived by her children, Yvonne Bergier and Robert E. Henss; grandchildren, Fred, Monique, Donna, Mark, Yvette; and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Henss was born in The Hague, Netherlands on July 9, 1921 and has been a resident of Tucson since 1950. She was a longtime member of the Dutch Club. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 31, 1997 at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd. Interment will follow at East Lawn Palms Cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary on Thursday, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

HILS, Marie Antoinette, passed away January 21, 1997. Marie was born near Marseille, France on February 7, 1903. She is survived by her daughter, Annette (Howard) Baldwin of Tucson; son, Paul Resta, Ph.D. of Austin, Texas; her granddaughters, Denise Baldwin of Tucson, Challys True of Spokane; three other grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Marie was an adventuresome soul. Marie began her great American adventure when she arrived in Ellis Island in November, 1926. After learning English and struggling through the Great Depression, she proudly became a United States Citizen. Marie had a curious mind, and was always active. As a lifelong student of learning she appreciated the beauty of all religions; the music of Chopin and Bach; operas and ballets. Social at heart, she loved being with people and caring for her family. Marie was unique individual who often said she lived during the best years of the world, beginning with horse and buggy to space ship travel. She knew in her heart women were just as strong and capable as men and took pleasure in seeing the gain of women’s rights and racial equality. She loved children and her family deeply and held great optimism for each new generation to participate in a life which gives youth the opportunity to blaze their own path, just as she did. Her family admired, respected and loved her and will miss her dearly. No service will be held except within the hearts of those near to her. In lieu of flowers, Marie would appreciate donations to the Arizona Children’s Home Foundation, 2700 S. 8th Ave., Tucson, Arizona 85713.

KERSTEN, Clyde W., 71, died January 26, 1997. Husband of Carol Ann Kersten; father of Sarah (Stuart) Albrecht of CA, Peter (Lynnette) Kersten of CT and Jeffrey (Chelsea) Kersten of Tucson; brother of Melva (David) Marsceau, Milton (Dorothy) Kersten all of WI and Edward (Betty) Kersten of Green Valley; four grandchildren also survive. He was a member of the Bonanza Ward Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Funeral Service, 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 31, at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, with Bishop Rick Nielsen officiating. Burial in L.D.S. Cemetery. Contributions may be made to American Parkinson’s Disease Assoc., 1650 E. Ft. Lowell #302, Tucson, AZ 85719. KILBOURNE, Olen, 78, of Tucson, died January 27, 1997. Survived by his wife, Alma Kilbourne; sons, Gary T. Kilbourne of Tucson, James (Pat) Kilbourne of Cleveland, OH, John Kilbourne of Las Vegas, NV; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Howard Kilbourne; sister, Iva Ruthford, both of VA. Service Friday, 3:00 p.m., EVERGREEN MORTUARY, with Pastor Terry Blair, Church of God of Prophecy officiating. Interment Evergreen Cemetery. LEVENGOOD, Robert D., 69, of Tucson, died January 27, 1997. A WWII Navy Veteran and member of VFW Post 10188. Survived by brother, Bill of Tucson; sisters, Janice L. Bucher of Modesto, CA and Jacqueline Pelley of Henderson, NV; stepdaughter, Linda of NC and local uncle Milo Levengood. Graveside Service 1:00 p.m. Thursday, Holy Hope Cemetery, with Brother Patrick Gavin of Sacred Heart Church officiating. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY & CEMETERY.

LIPKE, John William, 39, died peacefully at his home in Tucson, Arizona, January 26, 1997. He was born January 7, 1958, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After attending Orme School and Carrow School, he graduated from Central High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He attended Pima Community College and the University of Arizona in Tucson where his main love and interest was English and the Humanities. John held a variety of sales positions in Tucson. He was outgoing, witty, and grateful for what he had. His many pets brought him joy over the years. He was loved and will be deeply missed by friends, including those from A.A., and his family. He is survived by his daughter, Hannah Lisbeth Lipke of Elgin, Arizona; two sisters, Kerstin Lipke of Burlington, Vermont; and Lisbeth Lipke of Grand Rapids, Michigan; his mother, Lee Ann Pushaw of Grand Ledge, Michigan; his father and step-mother, Daniel P. Lipke and Sveltana Elnitsky and family of Burlington, Vermont; and a special friend, Lydia Massie of Tucson, Arizona. He is also survived by James R. Lipke and family of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida; William C., Daniel, and Megan Lipke of Burlington, Vermont; Mary Margaret Landi and family of Buffalo, New York; and C. Jean Witherill and family of East Lansing, Michigan. A private service for family and friends will be held in Tucson. A memorial service for family and friends will be held in Michigan at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in John’s memory to The Computer Lab at Elgin Elementary School in Sonoita, Arizona, 85611.

MANKEL, Maria Luisa (Licha), 70, of Nogales and Tucson, AZ. Passed away suddenly January 22, 1997. Mrs. Mankel was preceded in death by her mother, Julia Montenegro; and son, Oscar Mankel. She is survived by her daughters, Elvira (Chay) Carrillo, and Colleen Wilson; sons, Bobby, Jr. (Lydia), Mario (Patty), Isaac (Perla); 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; many cousins, nieces, and friends. Visitation Thursday January 30, 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Rosary 7:30 p.m. at South Lawn Mortuary, 5401 S. Park Ave. Mass will be offered Friday, January 31 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Monica’s Church, 212 W. Medina. Internment to follow at South Lawn Cemetery.

MCEACHREN, Wilma Fern, age 91, a resident of Arizona since 1930 and a resident of Tucson since 1941, passed away January 26, 1997. Born November 6, 1905 in Green City, Missouri. Survived by her husband of 61 years, Ernest McEachren; daughters, Marcia (John) Inlow of San Diego, California and Catherine Lynne Cockburn of Lewiston, California; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren. A visitation will be held from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. Thursday, January 30, 1997 at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY, 5401 S. Park Ave. Burial will be private.

NOTARO, Peter Joseph 'Pete'81, died January 26, 1997. Survived by his wife, Marie 'Rusty' Notaro; daughter, Wanda Bentley; his pride and joy, Joya Bear. Pete started his own trucking business at the age of 14, in the state of NY. Moved to Tucson in 1968. Friends may call 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 29, 1997 at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY, 5801 E. Grant Rd. where funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Thursday, January 30, 1997. Entombment to follow at East Lawn Palms Cemetery.

OSWELL, John P., 84, of Tucson, passed away peacefully at home on January 27, 1997. Born September 22, 1912 in Coleraine, Minn. He grew up in Los Angeles and then joined in his family’s business in San Juan County, New Mexico. The Anna Oil Corporation developed oil and gas property in the late 20's and 30's. He served his country as a member of the Sea Bees during two tours in the South Pacific where he received three Unit Citations. Following the War he worked in construction. He then entered the copper mining business working for Isabel and ASARCO (Silver Bell) until his retirement in 1977. He was active in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and enjoyed helping others. He is survived by his wife, Louisa; sons, Rudy (Penny) of Savannah, GA, Carl of Tucson and Jeff of Tucson. He was a kind and loving man and will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched. A memorial service will be held at St. Marks Methodist Church at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 1, 1997. Private interment was held at East Lawn Palms Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice. Arrangements by EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY.

PASLEY, Hilda R., a Tucson resident for 25 years, passed away December 7, 1996. Memorial Services are being held Thursday, January 30 at 4:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2450 E. Ft. Lowell Rd., Tucson. Mrs. Pasley is survived by her husband, Thomas; two sons, Edwin Matthews of Long Beach, CA, Ronald Pasley of Katy, TX; and one daughter, Ardis Haward of Cary, NC; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Hilda was born in Youngstown, Ohio, served in the Women’s Army Corp during WWII, served many years as a volunteer worker for the Tucson Police Department and received her associates degree from Pima Community College.

SCHRETER, Carolyn F., 65, of Tucson, passed away January 27, 1997. Survived by husband, Emil; children, James, Joseph and Richard Steele, Cathy Padilla, Doreen Palmgren and Bradley Schreter; also seven grandchildren. Also by mother, Frances Lee; sister, Pauline Spann and brother, Warren Lee. Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 1, 1997 at 5:00 p.m. at Copper Crest Clubhouse, 7700 W. Bopp Rd. Arrangements by ARIZONA MORTUARY.

SHAW, Robert Tyler, 71, of Tucson, passed away on January 26, 1997 from extensive injuries sustained in a tragic automobile accident on January 22, 1997. Bob Shaw was born in Washington D.C. on June 18, 1925, the son of Maj. Gen. Franklin Prague Shaw and the former Mary Inez Skees. He spent his childhood in Virginia, Kansas, China and Ohio. During WWII he served in the U.S. Army as a photo intelligence analyst. He graduated with distinction from the University of Arizona in 1947, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He was also a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Shaw worked briefly as an editor for Proctor and Gamble before joining the brand-new Central Intelligence Agency in early 1948. He remained with the CIA as an Operations Officer in the Clandestine Services until his retirement in 1980. During those 32 years he served abroad at six Foreign Service posts in Latin America and traveled extensively in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and Asia. He was the chief of four CIA overseas installations and was the charter member of the Senior Intelligence Service. In 1979 he was awarded the Intelligence Medal of Merit. Subsequent to his retirement, Shaw established a security firm which provided training in how to anticipate, avoid and survive terrorist attacks. In 1990 Bob Shaw returned to Tucson and was active in the Tucson Committee on Foreign Relations, Foreign Service Retirees of Southern Arizona, Central Intelligence Retirees Association, Association of Former Intelligence Officers and Tucson Rod and Gun Club. Shaw was involved in flying, amateur radio, gun collecting and shooting, antique car restoration and with several collections, most recently British horse brasses. He was also a strong supporter of animal welfare issues. Bob Shaw is survived by his wife, the former Janet Lee Ruggles, a Tucson native; three children, Barbara Lee Hurt, a bilingual teacher in San Antonio, TX, Richard Wilson Shaw, a US Army officer currently serving on the Joint Staff in the Pentagon and Thomas Ruggles Shaw, a US Marine Corps fighter pilot currently stationed at San Diego, CA; four grandchildren, Steven, Mark, Michael and Helen. Shaw is also survived by two brothers, Franklin Prague Shaw, Jr. of Santa Fe, NM and Harry James Shaw of Easton, MD. Service will be held at Northminster Presbyterian Church, Friday, January 31, 1:00 p.m., with Dr.William F. Dean officiating. Interment to follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, January 30, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. EVERGREEN MORTUARY. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Association will be appreciated. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY & CEMETERY, N. Oracle and W. Miracle Mile.
