CONLEY, Mary Alice, born on June 11, 1925, in Marshalltown, IA, died in Tucson on April 19, 1997. She was preceded in death by her parents, Brig. Gen. Edward A. and Nona Shunick Conley. She is survived by 13 cousins and many friends. (Mary Alice had, all her life, a rare genius for friendship.) She earned a B.S. in Business Administration, with high distinction, in 1952 at the University of Arizona, and immediately began working there in the Office of the Registrar (Degree Certification section). She performed with high distinction there as well for the next 23 years. She was a member of the Newman Club, Beta Gamma Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi scholastic honorary, and the Marian Guild at SS. Peter and Paul Parish. Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 23, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at VALLEY FUNERAL HOME, 2545 N. Tucson Blvd., with recitation of the Rosary at 3:30. Mass will be offered Thursday, April 24, at 10:00 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 1946 E. Lee St., with Father Donald J. Fiedler officiating. Interment will be in the family plot in Monmouth, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to the Arthritis Foundation, 6464 E. Grant Rd., Tucson, AZ 85715, or to the SS. Peter and Paul Catholic School Endowment Fund, Inc., c/o SS. Peter and Paul Catholic School, 1436 N. Campbell Ave., Tucson, AZ 85719. Good-bye, Mary Alice. LOVELL, Wilbert Myer, 68, of Tucson, died April 20, 1997. He is survived by his daughters, Sandra Jacobson and Connie Cowell; granddaughters, Lauren Shay and Hanna Rae; and cousin, Faye Puskaric. Friends may call from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at HEATHER MORTUARY, 1040 N. Columbus, on Tuesday, April 22, 1997. Graveside services will be at East Lawn Palms Cemetery, 5601 E. Grant Rd., on April 23, 1997 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow. Arrangements by HEATHER MORTUARY.

MARDIS, Rener, 58, passed away at his home on April 17, 1997. He is survived by his mother, Dovie; his brother, Keith, both of Tucson; aunt, Opal McCauley of Lake San Marcos, CA; his nieces, Toby Katz of New York, Terry Mardis of San Francisco; and numerous cousins. Rener was born in Tucson, attended Tucson schools and graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in Business Administration. He served honorably in the United States Army and the Arizona National Guard. Upon his discharge he worked for Pima Savings as an appraiser until he was diagnosed as having Multiple Sclerosis. There will be no services and any remembrance could be sent to the National M.S. Society, Southern AZ Chapter, 626 N. Craycroft, Tucson, AZ 85711 in the memory of Rener Mardis. Local arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel.

NEWHOUSE, Raymond R. Age 79. Born Rocky Hill, New Jersey, January 24, 1918 died in Tucson April 18, 1997. He worked on his father’s airport in Princeton from 1929 to 1940, and his brother, Werner, taught him to fly. In 1940 he started with American Airlines making Captain in 1942. His career covered 38 years flying everything from DC-2's to Boeing 747's. During WW II Ray served our country in the Air Transport Command. In April 1943 he married Helen Schneider and together they had seven children. He moved to Arizona in 1972 where he met Lorraine Jones and married in November, 1973. Ray and Lorraine have lived in Arizona since then. From a pioneer aviation family, his father was an early aviation inventor. Ray’s hobby was antique airplanes. Always active in Aviation organizations he was proud of his membership in Q.B.’s, Grey Eagles, Antique Airplane Assoc., and Experimental Aircraft Assoc. He restored the Aeronca C-3 in which his brother, Werner taught him to fly in 1934. Ray taught all his children to fly in a 1946J-3 Piper Cub. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; sons, Jim (Mary), Russ (Kathleen), Rich (Pat), and Bob (Joye); stepson, Ron Chandler; 18 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and preceded in death by his first wife, Helen; daughters, Lisa and Kathy; and son, John. A Memorial Service will be held for friends and family Saturday, April 26, 1997 11:30 a.m. at the family residence. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Casa de Los Ninos. Arrangements by ARIZONA MORTUARY.

STANFORD, Alice, 89, born January 24, 1908, died April 12, 1997 surrounded by family and many loving friends. Preceded in death by husband, Theodore Stanford. Survived by sons, Marvin (Annette), Florida, Jack (Nona), Alabama, David (Lois), Ohio; daughter, Marjorie Rowland, Tucson; 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Alice and her husband retired to Tucson in 1965. She was an active and beloved member of the Church of God of Prophecy. For the past three years Alice was a beloved resident of the Catalina Care Center. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 1997 at 7:00 p.m. at the Church of God of Prophecy, 3002 E. Glenn St.

SWOPES, Edward C., 80, of Tucson, died April 19, 1997. Survived by wife, Margit of Tucson; daughter, Terry Cowley of Ogden, UT; sons, Ronald and Robert Hubbard; grandchildren, Kimberly and Kathryn Cowley of Odgen, UT; sister, Lucile Freeman of Las Vegas, NV; and his pals, Sheba and Rambo. He was a life member of American Legion, Post #36 and V.F.W., Post #549. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WW II. He received his pilot rating in Ord, NE and was in the Nebraska Wing of Civil Air Patrol. Mr. Swopes was also a member of Elk’s Club #1674 and #2371 in NE; past president of Nebraska Professional Photographers Association; sales representative for Victor Molding Co; and a member of the Saturday Morning Breakfast Club. Graveside Service Wednesday, 2:00 p.m., Evergreen Cemetery, with military honors by American Legion, Post #36 and V.F.W., Post #549. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY & CEMETERY, N. Oracle & W. Miracle Mile.

ALLGOOD, Robert E., Retired USAF, 65, of Tucson, died May 30, 1997. Survivors include his beloved wife of 45 years, Barbara; five children, Stephen, Pamela (Louis) Escoto, Richard (Jeane), Gregory (Cathy), Robert Jr.; six grandchildren; three sisters, Joy, Terri and Dorothy; two brothers, Chester and Wiley. A one hour visitation at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY will be scheduled prior to a pending Graveside Service at East Lawn Palms Cemetery.

CLARK, David Bryden, age 72, died May 31, 1997. Born January 26, 1925 in Scotland. Survived by loving daughter, Gloria (Bob) Chabot and grandchildren, Jon, David (Kim), Dan (Linda), Susan (Lowell), Rob (Krista) and Donna Chabot; plus nine great-grandchildren. Predeceased by wife, Ann Clark, Tom his brother and grandson, Richard John Chabot. A private Memorial Service will be held at EAST LAWN.

CREMEANS, Nancy J., 37, died May 31, 1997. Wife of Raymond E. Cremeans; mother of Christopher Raymond A. and Steven; daughter of Alice and Robert J. Strosser; sister of Kathleen Buchwald of CA and Robert J. Strosser of OR; niece and nephew Kelly and Don Buckwald, nephews, Jeffrey and Jonathan Strosser. Graveside Services, 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, TMP Southlawn. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 626 N. Craycroft Rd., Tucson, AZ 85711, would be appreciated. MITALL, Louise B., 91, of Tucson, died Friday, May 30, 1997. Preceded in death by her great-granddaughter, Kara Belknap.Survivors include: daughter, Patricia (Gerry) Smith of Tucson; sons, Jim (Sylvia) Blythe of FL, Bill (Eva) Blythe and Bob Mitall, both of PA; 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Memorial Services will be at Christ Church United Methodist, Tuesday, June 3, 1997 at 7:00 p.m., with Rev. Paul Caseman officiating and the Eastern Star Service Board of Tucson participating. WARES, Helen E., 82, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, May 24, 1997 due to pneumonia and a major stroke. Beloved wife and constant companion of James for 61 years; mother of Marilyn (Robert) Hicks, Suzanne (David) Ritzenthaler and Sharon (Donald) Forester; grandmother of six and great-grandmother of three. Memorial Service planned for Wednesday, June 4 at 10:30 a.m. at Vista de la Montana United Methodist Church, 3001 E. Mira Vista Lane just north of Wilds Road and Oracle Road approximately 12 miles north of Ina Rd. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to Vista de la Montana United Methodist Church Building Fund or charity of choice. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. DIXON, Hazel M., a long time resident of Tucson, died Saturday, May 17, 1997 at her son’s home in Merriam, KS. Born August 16, 1908 she was the daughter of James and Charlotte (Korn) Gibson. She married William Dixon on June 24, 1929. Hazel worked for the Arizona Inn and TUSD Food Services for many years. Hazel is survived by her brother, Carl Gibson, Janesville, WI; her son, Robert (Dolores) Dixon of Merriam, KS; daughter, Lois (Kevin) Warner of Tucson, AZ; son-in-law, Fred Mochel of Las Cruces, NM; six grandchildren, Danni, Darcy, Marisol, Echo, Lauren, Sarah and three great-grandchildren, Kayla, Jacob and Jordan. She was preceded in death by husband, Bill and daughter, Delores. A Memorial Service will be held for family and friends to say goodbye on June 3, 1997 at the Rincon Congregational Church, 122 N. Craycroft at 11:00 a.m.

FRANCO, Mike R., 83, of Tucson, passed away May 28, 1997. Survived by sons, Mike (Gloria), Manuel, Martin (Yolanda), Andrew (Konokan); sister, Carmen Contreras and 11 grandchildren. Visitation will be held Sunday, June 1, 1997 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at CARRILLO’S TUCSON MORTUARY, (North Chapel), 204 S. Stone Ave., with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered on Monday, June 2, 1997 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Augustine Cathedral, 192 S. Stone Ave. Interment to follow at Holy Hope Cemetery. MADDEN, Josephine Grace, age 82, passed away Thursday, May 29, 1997. She has been a resident of Tucson since 1952, formerly of Pennsylvania. She is preceded in death by her husband, James Henry Madden and sister, Mary Macon and brother, John Zagst. Survivors include son, James A. (Mary) Madden; granddaughters, JoAnn and Jamie Madden of Tucson; sister, Helene Beer of Plano, TX and sister-in-law, Mary Zagst of Tucson. MARCUSSEN, Ruby B., 94, died May 30, 1997. Survived by son, Tom (Sandra) Stout; daughter, Helen Stauss; grandchildren, Jennifer (Stewart) Van Kirk, Susan (Dave) Gauntlett, Sandra (Marty) Howard, Thomas A. (Kim) Stout, Dan (Amy) Stout and Jeff Stout; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Mark Hooper and sister, Katherine Hickey. Preceded in death by husbands, Tom Stout and Andrew Marcussen; daughter, Norma Jean Barnes; grandchildren, John Barnes III and Deborah Stauss. MARTIN, Charles F., born in Mineola, NY on February 4, 1926, parents, Lucille and John A. Martin, died May 29, 1997. Charles came to Tucson with his family in 1941, attended Tucson High School and enlisted in the Navy in 1942 serving in the South Pacific on the USS Pensacola. After the war, he finished high school at Tucson High School, graduating in 1947. After moving to Idaho and California, where he worked with J.C. Penney’s, he and his family returned to Tucson in 1960. He retired from Montgomery Wards in 1982 after 22 years. Survivors include wife, Kay C. Kopp; daughters, Jo Ann, Chino, CA, Patti, Tucson; sons, Dan (Jill), Tucson, Tom (Julie), Phoenix, Paul (Celina), Tucson, Steven (Cindy), Flagstaff and former wife, Betty (Hank) Salgado of Show Low. Also stepdaughters, Fran (Gary) Fellhauer, CO and Pam (Bill) Unterseh, Phoenix; stepsons, Stan (Jana) Miller, Tucson and Curtis Miller, Phoenix. Charles leaves 24 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sister, Honey Dayton of Denver, CO; brothers, John Martin of NY and Robert (Pat) Martin of Tucson and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at the Avalon Chapel, Northern Ave., on Saturday, May 31, 1997 at 2:00 p.m. The family requests that any donations be made to the Humane Society of Tucson.

MORRIS, Patsy Jean, 67, died May 29, 1997. Wife of Fred; mother of Mike (Jean) Castle of CO, Steve (Lori) Morris, Linda (Jim) Wiggins and Suzanne (Larry) Wheeler, all of Tucson; sister of Honorable David L. Grounds of Tempe, Todgy Grounds and Gary Hanshaw and Yevette Hanshaw, all of Phoenix; grandmother of Sarah, Steven, Cedrick and Anthony. Funeral Service 10:00 a.m. Sunday, June 1, 1997 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL with Rev. Lew Runion officiating. Friends may call from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 1997 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

MULLIGAN, Virginia M., of Tucson, passed away May 30, 1997. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Raymond A. Mulligan; four children, Barry, Kevin, Brian and Marianne; grandchildren Trevor, Brendan, Carrie, Colin, Sean and Michael. Virginia was born in Indiana and received degrees from William Woods College in Missouri and Indiana University in Bloomington. She was very active in many organizations and achieved many state, local and national posts and honors. Among the organizations in which she held membership are the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Colonists, The Sociological Association of Ireland and the International Congress of Celtic Studies. She was also active in the Tucson Indiana University Alumni Club, the University’s Women’s Club, Mothers Club of the Lambda Chi Alpha, Alpha Delta Delta, Alpha Kappa Delta and Public Administration Association, plus the Tucson Symphony Women’s Club and Opera Guild. Friends may call at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY, Monday, June 2, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., with Graveside Services to follow. A Memorial Service will be held at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL, Sunday, June 8, 1997 at 3:00 p.m.
