Shirley Ann Basel, December 13, 1934 – July 14, 1996. Shirley’s Memorial Bench has been completed and installed on the plaza located in the southeast corner of the Four Apostles Statue at East Lawn Palms Cemetery.

ENDELMAN, Ruth, was born November 7, 1908 to Harry and Grace Platt Endelman in Algonac, MI, died June 24, 1997. Her mother, father and two sisters predeceased her. Surviving are three nephews, Paul Pontius of McAllen, TX, Lewis Pontius of Moore, OK and Ronald Pontius of Brady, TX. She graduated from Battle Creek College and taught in Bad Axe, MI and Rochester, MI before coming to Tucson in 1947 where she taught at Roosevelt, Jefferson Park, Lineweaver and Rogers Elementary Schools – retiring in 1974. She spent summers at her cottage at Algonac near the St. Clair River. No Services are planned. Memorial gifts may be made to Casas Adobes Congregational Church (UCC) or any charity to help children.Memberships include Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, Friends of the Library, Retired Teachers Association and Casas Adobes Congregational Church. Arrangements by BRING’S MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 236 S. Scott.

FRENCH, Elizabeth C., 89, of Tucson, died June 22, 1997. Survivors include her son, Donald (Judith French of Tucson; grandchildren, Eric and Suzanne; and one nephew, John. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Donald and her grandson, Andrew. Memorial Services will be held at Rincon Community Center, Saturday, June 12, 1997, time pending. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Elizabeth’s name to The University of Idaho, Science or Nature Conservancy. Arrangements by HEATHER MORTUARY.

JONES, Willis M., 90, of Tucson, Arizona, passed away June 24, 1997. He was born July 23, 1906 near Waterville, Washington. He is survived by his wife, Billie McCleary Jones; a son, Dr. Robert W. Jones of Tempe, AZ; a daughter-in-law, Marcia A. Jones of Los Alamos, NM; two granddaughters, Sherryl A. Jones of Port Townsend, WA, Diane Jones Schumacher of Seattle, WA; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Victor M. Jones of Seattle, WA, Rowland M. Jones of Cashmere, WA; and three sisters, Ruth Mae Bunnell of Yakima, WA, Ida Jenkins of Issaquah, WA and Mary Johnston of Portland, OR. Willis grew up in the wheat country of Eastern Washington. He was a graduate of Linfield College in McMinnville, OR and taught school in Oregon several years but spent most of her life in Seattle, WA.After selling his business interests in Seattle, he and his wife retired to Tucson, AZ. Memorials may be sent to the Willis M. Jones Memorial Fund, Linfield College, 900 S. E. Baker Street, McMinnville, OR 97128. There will be a private service. Arrangements conducted by VALLEY FUNERAL HOME, 327-6341.

KENNEDY, Janice B., 72, of Tucson, died Monday, June 23, 1997. Survived by: husband, Walter M.; children, Scott E. of Aurora, CO, Luann M. Fitzpatrick of Roanoke, VA, John A. of Englewood, CO; sister, Maxine White of Port Huron, MI, Imogene Stickney of Royal Oak, MI; brother, Ed Barnes of Dearborn, MI. Memorial Services Thursday, June 26 at 2:00 p.m. at Tucson Meadows Mobile Home Park, Community Building, 2121 S. Pantano Rd. Arrangements by ARIZONA MORTUARY.

MANDAL, Alex M., 38, of Tucson, died June 22, 1997. Survivors include his wife, Caroline; sons, Jesse and Joseph; and daughter, Leah; parents, Rose and Miguel Nieto; sisters, Alice, Agnes, Anna and Angie; and brother, Angelo. Alex was a resident of Tucson for 17 years and worked at Allied Signal Aerospace, Tucson for the past 11 years. Funeral Service will be at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd., Thursday, June 26 at 2:30 p.m. with Committal Service to follow. 'We love and miss you.'

MANNING, Alice M., 79, died June 24, 1997. Mother of Marcia (Richard) Grau of Tucson; sister of Ellen Chang of Lewiston, ID and E. Clark Miller of Santa Monica, CA; grandmother of Jennifer Martin of Morgan Hill, CA, Molly Grau, Briana Grau and Richard Grau, Jr., all of Tucson; one great-grandchild, Bradley Grau Martin of Morgan Hill, CA also survives. She was a member of P.E.O. Memorial Service, 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 5, 1997 at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, 9252 E. 22nd St., with Rev. Fred Wood officiating. Contributions to the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, c/o of The Youth Program in memory of Alice M. Manning would be appreciated. Arrangements by BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

Jeanne C. Nickson, 76, of Tucson, passed away June 17, 1997. She is survived by her beloved grandson, Jeffrey S. Nickson; sister, Patricia C.Johnson; and brother, Bill Collins, all of Tucson. She was a school principal for Los Angeles School District where she was recognized for her outstanding service in 1979. The library at Vine Street elementary School was named after her in 1994 in commemoration of her many years of dedicated service. She was still very active after her retirement & participated at the Tucson Museum of Art and was a leader of the Literacy Adult Education Program. She published two historical novels 'Tears of the Moon' and 'Shadow of the Condor'. It was her desire that her remains be cremated and no services be held. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. A celebration of her life will be held on her birth date July 15th.

STONE, Ruth O., 94, passed away June 20, 1997. She was preceded in death by her two brothers and five sisters and in 1985 by her husband, John W. Stone. Survivors include her son, J.W. Stone (Frances), Tucson, AZ; grandson, Gary Stone (Nancy), Kingman, AZ; three great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and by numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Ruth and John relocated to Arizona from Missouri in 1943. Ruth was a retired Boulder City, NV Hospital chef for many years. She enjoyed as her hobbies: cake decorating, crocheting, knitting, sewing doll clothes and collecting salt and pepper shakers. As was her wish her remains will be cremated and with John’s cremated remains interment will be in St. Joseph’s, MO. Ruth’s family wish to thank the staff, nurses and aids of Devon Gables Health Care Center and Dignita Hospice Care for their kindness and support. Arrangements by BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

TILLMANN, Anna Catherine (Hermann), 92, died June 23, 1997. Survived by niece, Loraine DeMay of Sun City West, AZ and other nieces and nephews. Mass will be offered 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 26, 1997 at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, 1800 S. Kolb Rd., with Msgr. Thomas Cahalane officiating. Interment to follow at Holy Hope Cemetery. Rosary will be recited 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 25, 1997 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, and friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 25, 1997 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway. Family request donations to Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church in her name.

BROWN, Dorothy M., 69, died June 20, 1997. Survived by her sons, Ellery and Paul W. Brown; grandchildren, Shawn A. Lezine, Maurice S. Hughes and L’Ree J. Brown; sisters, Laura Jones, Betty Williams, Arquila Irby, Priscilla Warren, Evelyn Hendley and Georgia Strong; one brother, Jasper Brown and a host of nieces and nephews. Dorothy was a member of Prince Chapel AME Church where she was an usher for many years. Friends may call, 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m, Wednesday, June 25, 1997 at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd., where Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 26, 1997. FALLON, John W., 79, died June 22, 1997 in Tucson. He was born in Boston, MA. Survived by three daughters, Patricia Glover of Tucson, AZ, Kathleen Carbone of Jacksonville Beach, FL, Amy Fallon, Milford, NH; one son, John W. Fallon, Jr. of Santa Cruz, CA; one brother, Francis Fallon of Boston, MA; one great-grandchild and a very special cousin, Helen Gorman, Nashua, NH. Friends may come to WOLFREY PEACE CHAPEL from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 24, 1997 where a Vigil Service will be at 6:00 p.m. Mass for Mr. Fallon will be said at 9:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 25, 1997 at St. Pius X, 1800 N. Camino Pio Decimo. Burial will follow at Our Lady of the Desert. Arrangements by WOLFREY PEACE CHAPEL, 5225 E. Speedway, 881-0338.

HAGEN, Margaret A., 84, of Tucson, loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend passed on peacefully in her sleep June 18, 1997. Born and raised in Turkey where she met and married her husband, Lt. Col. David R. Hagen, who preceded her in death May 22, 1982. Margaret lived an enormously productive and caring life dedicated to serving the welfare of children and the mentally handicapped. She received many awards for her contributions to the community. Her service included Honorary Lifetime Board Member of Beacon Foundation, Past AZ State PTA President and lifetime National PTA Board Member, Volunteer of the Year DMAFB Retired Officers Assoc., PCARC and FMCA. Survived by sons, Virgil B., David E.; and daughters, Linda B. (Stephen) Salajko, May M.; and grandchildren, Damien Bagalini, Victoria and Marguerite Salajko. We are all proud to have been a part of her and thankful to have had her in our lives, as well as being a part of hers. We love you and you will always be in our thoughts and hearts. The family held a private memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Beacon Foundation, 25 E. Drachman, 85705.

Mildred N. Hammer 'Millie', age 70, of Tucson, passed away June 20, 1997. She is survived by beloved husband, Francis J. 'Sledge' Hammer; sons and daughters, Christie Simons, Barbara (Michael) Norris, Mary (Dan) Kretschmer, Teri (Rex) Scott, Diane (Wes) Kinney, Greg (Mariana) Hammer and Michael (Robin) Hammer; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Rose Stam, Carol Milligan and Ruth Hamman and brother, Ted Kendrick. She was preceded in death by daughter, Catherine Ann. Services will be held at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 750 W. Chapala on Tuesday, June 24, 1997 at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Barbara Anderson officiating. The family suggests donations to the Lung Biology Lab, Georgetown University Medical School c/o Dr. Donald Massaro, GM12 Preclinical Science Building, 3900 Reservoir Rd. MILLER, Patricia L., 66, died June 21, 1997. Survived by sons, Scott and Tom Bower, both of Tucson; daughter, Eydie Pankow of Ohio; sister, Margaret Miller of Tucson and Colorado; uncle, Bret Emmons of Tucson; two grandchildren also survive. Mrs. Miller was an original employee in the Business Office of St. Joseph’s Hospital as a supervisor. The family suggests donations in Patricia’s name to Columbia Home Care El Dorado, 1200 N. Alfred A. Pfordte, 43, died June 21, 1997. Survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Pfordte and her mother, Candy; daughter, Jessica Queen; father, Alfred P. Pfordte; brother, Richard (Ruth) Pfordte; sister, Susan (Daniel) Keller; and nephew, Michael Keller. Alfred was born in Washington D.C. and a resident of Tucson since 1975. Manager of the Tucson Roto-Rooter as well as a plumber for several years. He loved the outdoors, enjoyed running and participated in Triathalons. He will be remembered by his many friends and family for his sense of humor. Memorial Service will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 26, 1997 at Unity of Tucson Church, 3617 N. Camino Blanco. Rev. Larry Swartz officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Unity of Tucson Church.

PITTS, Eleanore Irene, age 74, of Tucson, AZ died June 20, 1997. Survived by brothers, Leonard and Henry Baldwin and a host of nieces and nephews. Friends may call at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave. at Magee, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 25, 1997.Funeral Services will be held at the Dove of Peace Lutheran Church, 665 W. Roller Coaster Rd. at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 26, 1997, with Pastor J. Wendell Clutz officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.

RAWSON, Eugenia H., 73 of Tucson, died June 21, 1997. Preceded in death by brothers, Irwin and Charles. Survived by brothers, Kenneth Rawson of Tucson and John Rawson of Kittery Point, ME and sisters, Dorothea Rawson of Tucson, Marjorie Gaetano of Seymour, CT and Joyce Plaisted of Jay, ME. No visiting hours at the request of family. Interment will be in Connecticut. Arrangements by BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

RODERICK, Beth Anne, while scuba diving in San Carlos, Mexico, on Saturday, June 21, 1997, went home to sing to, rejoice with and to praise our Savior Jesus Christ in Heaven above. Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and sister, she will be so dearly missed by her family and friends. She loved and was loved by her dear husband, Ron of 34 years; daughter, Robin (Doug) Steinmehl; son, Derek Roderick; brother, Mark Sebestyen; parents, Geza and Adele Sebestyen; three grandchildren, Kurtis, Alexandra and Trevor Steinmehl and so many countless friends, both here in Tucson and in California. Beth was a true servant of God fulfilling His purpose for her life. She loved serving, helping and ministering to others while working at Community Hospice and most recently at Casas Adobes Baptist Church. She worked in the Worship ministry, sang in the choir and counseled many through the Stephen ministry program. She truly brought God’s love into the many lives that she touched. Our loss is Heaven’s gain and we look forward to our family reunion in His glory. Friends may call, Tuesday, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., EVERGREEN MORTUARY & CEMETERY, N. Oracle & W. Miracle Mile. STALCUP, Mary Elizabeth 'Lizzie', 96, died June 22, 1997. Survived by sons, Clifton Stalcup of Tucson, Ray Stalcup of Texas and Wayne Stalcup of New Mexico; sisters, Lala Petty and Lou Murray, both of California; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren also survive. Services and interment in Big Springs, Texas. Local arrangements by BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

SWITZER, David E., 18, passed away June 22, 1997. Survived by parents, Richard and Barbara Switzer; sister, Kathy Etchison; niece, Jessica; grandmother, Ruth M. Switzer, all of Tucson and uncle and aunt, James and Joanne Switzer of Livonia, MI. Friends may call at Hudgel’s SWAN FUNERAL HOME, 22nd & Swan, on Wednesday, June 25 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be Thursday, June 26 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home with interment following at East Lawn Cemetery.
