BERGSCHNEIDER, Leonard, was called home by his Heavenly Father on June 14, 1997. He was born March 22, 1918 at Rib Lake, WI. He is survived by his daughter, Darlene (Harvey) Sangals; grandchildren, Robert Crump, Tucson, Katherine (William) Roberts and their children, Karyn, Jonathan and Katelyn, Phoenix and William (Ann) Crump and their child, Daniel. He is also survived by three step-great-grandchildren, Brett and Darren Roberts, Phoenix and Ayla Rothman, Sierra Vista. Leonard was an Operating Engineer and worked all over the world. He ‘retired’ to Alaska where he operated several different rock crushing operations before retiring to Tucson to be with his family. He led a truly exciting and eventful life. He will be missed by many who loved him dearly. Memorial Services will be held for the family only. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave. (at Magee).

W. Paul Colwell, 89, born July 19, 1907, in Detroit, Michigan, died peacefully on June 19, 1997 after a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Colwell and his wife, True (Gertrude), moved to Tucson in 1982 from Los Angeles where Mr. Colwell had been a prominent figure in the wholesale food industry for 37 years. He was a member of the Board of Pepperdine University and the President of the Ann Peppers Foundation. Mr. Colwell graduated from the University of Michigan in 1929 and married Gertrude Johnson, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Ralph K. Johnson, in 1931. His job as regional sales director for Stokely-Van Camp, Inc. took him and his family from Detroit to Massachusetts in 1939 and then to Los Angeles in 1942. In 1948 he was promoted to National Sales Manager of Stokely-Van Camp in Indianapolis, IN. In 1951 Mr. Colwell decided to start his own food brokerage company in Los Angeles. He became president of Colwell-Hopson and Associates and later vice chairman of Cook Boynton Company. Upon retirement from the food business, Mr. Colwell launched a second career in commercial real estate. In Tucson, he owned and managed Commerce Plaza business park for nearly 15 years, working at his office every day until well into his 90th year. Devoted and loving husband, father and Christian, Mr. Colwell was highly respected for his integrity, business acumen and care for people.Always an active church member, he also supported the Moral Re-Armament program for 46 years. Preceded in death by his brother, Horace, Mr. Colwell is survived by his wife, Gertrude (True); his sons, Steve (Lynn) of Post Falls, ID, Paul Jr. (Catalina) of Tucson, Ralph (Deborah) of Tucson and Ted (Mary) of Caldwell, ID; his 12 grandchildren, Christopher, Corey, Chip, Wade, Jeb, Sabina, Kit, Clayton, Fletcher, Beth, Amy and Paul; and his great-grandson, Noah. Visitation at Christ Community Church, 7801 E. Kenyon Drive, Tucson, AZ 85710, Monday, June 23, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Memorial service celebrating Mr. Colwell’s life also at Christ Community Church at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 24. Instead of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the W. Paul Colwell Memorial Fund tosupport programs and activities at Christ Community Church. EICHORN, Fred C., 79, U.S. Air Force retired, died June 21, 1997. He is survived by his beloved wife, Martha; loving father of, Sharon (Harry) Christensen of Portland, OR, Nancy (Glen) Strange of Portland, OR, Fred C. (Bonnie) Eichorn of Tucson; dear brother of Margaret May; fond grandfather of Eric, Kirsten, Kurt, Kevin, Wade, Monica, Deitra, and Tennille; great-grandfather of Jeremy, Shayna, Harrison, Rachel, and Gabriel. Friends may call on Monday, June 23 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at VALLEY FUNERAL HOME, 2545 N. Tucson Blvd., (one block North Grant). Funeral Service will take place Tuesday June 24 at 10:00 a.m. at VALLEY FUNERAL HOME, with Rev. Cynthia Kirk officiating. Interment will take place at Eastlawn Palms Cemetery. ESPINOZA, Artemisa Garcia (Artie-Michie), born to Eternal life on June 21, 1997 and reunited with her parents, Espiridion and Catalina Garcia of Safford; and her husband, Pilar Espinoza of Morenci. She died surrounded by her loving family after a long, courageous battle with osteoporosis. She will be greatly missed by her brother, Manuel Garcia; and her sister, Carmela Maldonado; her children, Esther (Barry) Fox, Louis (Kathleen) Espinoza, Fred (Laurie)Espinoza and Catherine Espinoza; her 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; numerous relatives and close friends. She was very active in her parish at St. Rose of Lima in Safford and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Tucson. The celebration of her life here with us and her eternal life with our Heavenly Father will be on Monday, June 23, 1997 at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, 8090 N. Northern Ave. at Magee from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, June 24, 1997 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 8650 N. Shannon Road (297-7357) at 10:00 a.m. Interment immediately following at Holy Hope Cemetery. Donations may be made to Hospice Family Care, in memory of Artemisa Espinoza, 3443 E. GUTIERREZ, Luis M., 75, of Tucson passed away June 20, 1997. Preceded in death by parents, Florencio and Victoriana Gutierrez; survived by wife, Carmen C. Gutierrez; daughter, Margaret Budynski; son, Louie J. (Kristina) Gutierrez; sisters, Mary (Ruben) Munoz, Josie (Gabriel) Encinas; brother, Cruz (Anita) Gutierrez. Also survived by five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. Gutierrez was employed by Magma Copper Mine for 30 years. He was a member of the American Legion Cocio-Estrada Post 59 for 23 years. At his request there will be no Services held. Arrangements by CARRILLO’S TUCSON MORTUARY.

HASKELL, Willard L., age 77, of Tucson died June 22, 1997. Survivors include wife, Elizabeth Haskell of Tucson; son, Ronald S. Haskell of Denton, TX; daughters, Dayle Antram and Janet Crowson of Tucson; 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.Mr. Haskell was preceded in death by one brother, Frederick Haskell. Mr. Haskell served with the USAF in WWII, was a prisoner of the Japanese for 28 months. He has resided in Tucson since 1969, moving here from Wisconsin. Graveside services will be at Petland Memorial Park, 5720 E. Glenn, Wednesday, June 25, 1997 at 9:30 a.m. with Rev. Dale Jacobson officiating. Burial will follow at Petland. PITTS, Eleanore Irene, age 74, of Tucson, AZ died June 20, 1997. Survived by brothers, Leonard and Henry Baldwin and a host of nieces and nephews. Northern Ave. at Magee, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 25, 1997.Funeral Services will be held at the Dove of Peace Lutheran Church, 665 W. Roller Coaster Rd. at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 26, 1997, with Pastor J. Wendell Clutz officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.

SAMP, Leonard O., age 86, of Tucson. A loving husband, father, and grandfather. Passed away June 20, 1997. He is survived by his son, David; and grandson, Ryan, both of Seattle; sister, Martha of Detroit and many friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy. Mr. Samp was born in Alpena, MI and after serving in the U.S. Army in World War II, moved to Tucson in the late 1940's. He then worked for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement. He was an active member of V.F.W. Post 4903 and attended Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Friends may call at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY 5401 S. Park Ave, beginning at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 24th. A memorial service will follow at 4:00 p.m. with Pastor David Poedel officiating. The V.F.W. also will conduct a Memorial Service.

VIRDEN, Dorothy S., 91, died June 19, 1997. Preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, James Virden and son, Thomas. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Kay Savage of Tucson; granddaughter, Cathy Duncan and grandson, Chris Virden. She leaves four great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Lisa and Scott Duncan of Gilbert, AZ and Casey Virden of Tucson. As was their wish, the cremains of Dorothy and James will be buried together in Columbus, IN with Graveside Services on July 6. 1997. The family is very grateful for the care provided by the staff of 'Our Place' Adult Care Home, where Dorothy had resided since November, 1994. Arrangements by ARIZONA MORTUARY.

VOSBERG, Donald T. 'Huck', will be forever remembered as a loving and devoted husband and father. As a long time resident of Tucson, he dedicated his time, energy and enthusiasm to his family and community. He began his athletic career at Dubuque High School where he lettered in football, track and field. He was later inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 1993. At Marquette University, he starred on the football and track teams and played on the All Star Football team of 1941. Upon graduation, he played for the New York Giants. Called to duty, he served as a Lieutenant in WWII aboard the USS Quick, and later became a coach at the University of Arizona. Along with service as a charter member of the Tucson Conquistadors, he provided for the youth of Tucson through service in the Kiwanis Club, Lions, Catholic Youth Organization, Tucson Youth Football, Tucson Little League and the Democratic Party. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Eleanor; sons, Donald Jr. (Anne), Michael, and Thomas; daughters, Patricia, Barbara, Kathleen (Richard) Snyder, Susan (John) Moore, Lori (William) Francis, Ann (Robert) Tillery, 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Jane Glaser, Kathleen Glaser; and brother Edward Vosberg. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Cyril’s Catholic Church, 4725 E. Pima (Pima at Swan), Tuesday, June 24, 1997 at 10:00 a.m. The Vosberg family has requested in lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Donald Vosberg Memorial Fund through St. Cyril Educational Foundation. AXTELL, Jay W., 82, a resident of both Colorado Springs, CO and Parker, AZ, passed away on June 14, 1997 at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, CO. Jay was born on August 23, 1914 at Binghamton, NY, a son of the late Percy J. and Virginia Woodruff Axtell. Mr. Axtell is survived by wife of 60 years, Mabel Barney Axtell, they were married on January 18, 1937 at Binghamton, NY. He is also survived by three children, Kay Esther Dean of Prescott, AZ, Dr. Marijane Axtell Paulsen of Colorado Springs, CO, Henry 'Hank' Axtell, a retired DPS officer of Tucson, AZ; one brother, Chuck Axtell of New York, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mr. Axtell was a member of St. Phillips Episcopal Church in Parker, AZ, Benson, AZ Lions Club, the Sheriff’s Posse Association in Parker, AZ, he was a rider in the Great American Cattle Drive, he had also been a rider at the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Parade in Colorado Springs for the last five years. Mr. Axtell never met a stranger. Private family Services will be held. The family request that memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association, 619 N. Nevada Ave., Colorado Springs, CO 80903 or a charity of choice. Mountain View Mortuary, 2350 Montebello Sq. Dr., Colorado Springs, CO 80918, is in charge of arrangements.

CLEGHORN, Harold Burt, age 83, diedSaturday, June 14, 1997. Survived by wife, Betty Cleghorn, Tucson, AZ; daughter, Marilyn Knipp, Vancouver, British Columbia; son, Roger Cleghorn, Bedford, Massachusetts; sister, Hazel Baker, Wichita, KS; brother, Edward Cleghorn, Rifle, Colorado; two grandchildren. Mr. Cleghorn was born January 26, 1914 in Kiowa County, KS. married Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Parker on June 10, 1939 in Wichita, KS. Attended Southwestern College in Winfield, KS and Colvin Chiropractic College in Wichita. He was a resident of Wichita for 42 years and worked for Beech Aircraft for 41 years. He served with the Marines from 1944 to 1946. He was a Mason and a Master of Lodge #99 in 1952. He was active at College Hill Methodist Church. In 1978 Mr. Cleghorn moved to Tucson, AZ, where he spent his remaining years serving his God at the Church of God in Tucson. Memorial Services will be Tuesday, 11:00 a.m. at the Church of God in Tucson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: The First Church of God, 3355 N. Fontana, Tucson, AZ 85705. Carolyn C. (Crockett) Edgett passed away June 17, 1997, Tucson, AZ. Preceded in death by her parents, Lewis N. and Mildred (Bender) Crockett and sister, Doris (Sue) Musgrove. Survived by her husband, Gordon L. Edgett; and four brothers, Richard (Bonnie) Crockett, Don (Pat) Crockett, John (Violet) Crockett, Bob (Sonja) Crockett; and sister, Kaye (Gary) Jay and their families. Also survived by two brothers-in-law, Alvin (Al) Edgett and Raymond (Toni) Edgett and family. After graduating from Tucson High School Carolyn joined the U.S. Naval Reserve and later served on active duty in the Aviation Service, U. S. Navy as a Tower Operator for 23 months during WWII. The family wishes to thank all the relatives, friends and the nurses and aides at St. Mary’s Hospital for their love and support during Carolyn’s long illness. Also, many thanks to the staff, nurses, and aides of Carondelet Hospice Services for their thoughtful and professional care and assistance during the past few months. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Augustine’s Cathedral, 192 S. Stone Ave., 9:00 a.m. Monday, June 23, 1997. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Carolyn’s name may be made to Carondelet Hospice Services, 1802 W. St. Mary’s Rd., Tucson, AZ 85745-2619.

ELGIN, Woodrow Louthan, 83, died in Tucson on June 20, 1997. He was born March 1, 1914 in Shelby County, Missouri, to William Walter Elgin and Ethel Carmichael Elgin. He married Margaret Reed Crawford Elgin on July 19, 1938 in La Plata, Missouri. They lived in Jefferson City, MO, Kansas City, KS and Kansas City, MO before retiring to Tucson in 1979. Mrs. Elgin died March 7, 1997. He attended school from first through twelfth grades in La Plata, graduating in 1931. After working in several federal and state agencies in Jefferson City, he took an accounting position in Kansas City with Transcontinental and Western Airline (later known as Trans World Airlines). He worked for TWA for 35 years in various accounting positions, retiring as Manager of Accounts Payable. He was a Charter member of the South Platte Kiwanis Club and a Board member of the Park Hill Christian Church, Boy Scout Troop #5, Riverside, MO and the Houston Lake Association. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and sister, Maurine Elgin Eggert. He is survived by his son, William Russ Elgin; his daughter, Lynn Elgin Brown-Quick and her husband, Gary Quick; grandchildren, Jennifer Lynn Roden and Elizabeth Ann Bell; great-grandchildren, Sara Lynn Roden, Wade Allen Roden and Robert Daniel Bell; sister-in-law, Leigh Crawford and nieces, Sally Crawford Morgan, Sandra Crawford Wilcoxson; and nephew, John B. Crawford. Memorial Service, Monday, 11:00 a.m. EVERGREEN MORTUARY, interment, La Plata Cemetery, La Plata, MO. FATHERA, Anna Nadine, 84, born in Omaha, IL, passed away peacefully in her sleep in Tucson, June 18, 1997. Preceded in death by husband, Rayford B. Fathera and son, Ronald R. Fathera (Carol). Mother of William 'Red' B. Fathera (Antoinette) and Lowell G. Fathera (Loeles) of Tucson; sister, of Wanda Loeffler of Long Beach, CA and Donald and Cleatus Baker of San Diego, CA; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Fathera was a Tucson resident for 67 years and a founding member of the Amphitheater Community Church. Funeral Services will be held at EAST LAWN PALMS CHAPEL, Tuesday, June 24 at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Stephen Patrick Ambrose officiating. Friends may call at EAST LAWN PALMS CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd. GRAUMAN, John E. 'Jack', 70, beloved husband of Betty; loving father to Joe(Janie), Mark (Linda) and Sue (Dante); cherished brother to Walter (Peggy), Edie, Rubin, Gloria and Fred Schimmel; adoring grandfather to Jenna and Jon, Steve and Lisa, Keith and Lindsey and countless friends. His bright humanity touched all who knew him and everything shined a little brighter while he was on this earth. A former Tucsonian, Jack attended Mansfeld Junior High and Tucson High before moving to California in 1943. Memorial Services were held at Hillside Memorial Park, 6001 Centinela Ave., Wednesday, June 18. In lieu of flowers, the family requests tributes be sent to the John E. HEARNE, Josephine T., 92, beloved sister went to be with the Lord on June 19, 1997. Beloved sister of Gertrude Branker of Tucson, Michael (Edith) Nairne and Raphael (Dorothy) Nairne, both of Florida and Anna Van Beverhoudt of Tucson; beloved nieces, nephews, close friends and other relatives also survive. She attended Eastside Assembly of God Church. Funeral Service, 10:00 a.m., Monday June 23, 1997 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, with Pastor David Stevens officiating. Interment to follow at TMP South Lawn. Friends may call from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, June 22 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.
