MASON, Joseph Rocco, passed away June 12, 1997 after a lingering illness. He was born February 27, 1928 in New York City. Survived by wife, Jane; two daughters, Victoria Mason of Kailua, HI and Marianne (David) Siedsma of Costa Mesa, CA and several grandchildren. There will be no FuneralServices. Any contributions may be made to the donor’s favorite charity. Arrangements by Hudgel’s SWAN FUNERAL HOME.

William Franklyn Maxson, Jr., age 76, passed away Sunday, June 15, 1997. Bill served as a tail gunner in a B-24 completing 50 missions over Germanyduring WWII. He was a staff manager with Prudential Insurance Company from 1956 to 1962. Bill was also a manager of Occidental Life Insurance Company of N. Carolina from 1962 to 1965 and a loan officer with First National Bank from 1965 to 1968. Hemanaged American Oil self service station from 1969 to 1973. He then worked as a sales rep. for Enders, servicing the mines inArizona until his medical retirement in 1982. Bill was President of the Y’s mens club in Red Bank, N.J. and Tucson. He served as President of three Optimist’s Club in Tucson, Palo Verde, Pueblo and Cholla. He was an active member of Catalina Baptist Church for 40 years. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; one brother and onesister. Bill is survived by wife, Dorothy P. Maxson; daughters, Lynda McCanse of Tucson, Gaybrielle Gordon of Columbus, OH; son, William (Priscilla) F. Maxson III of Tucson; granddaughters, Stephanie and Cassandra McCanse, Tina Marie Maxson; grandsons, Benjamin and Timothy Gordon; brothers, Harry Maxson from Navesink, N.J. and Ernest Maxson from Atlantic Highlands, N.J. Memorial Services will be held atCatalina Baptist Church, 1900 N. Country Club on Saturday, June 21, 1997 at 10:00 a.m. with a reception following the service. Memorial donations may be made to James Logan Scholarship Fund of Catalina Baptist Church or Cholla Optimist Club C/O Bud English, 224 W. Pastime Rd. 85705. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOME, DODGE CHAPEL.

Mary L. McLeod widow of George C. McLeod and daughter of the late Harold and Lula Crawford of Tucson was born January 8, 1927 in Pittsfield, Maine. She died of breast cancer June 16, 1997 at her home here in Tucson. She and her husband, the former editor of the editorial page for the Tucson Daily Citizen came to Tucson in the early 1950s. She was an active member of St. Michael and All Angel’s Church and taught music at their Parish Day School for many years. She also taught private piano lessons and was very involved with the Tucson Music Teacher’s Association. Mary is survived by her son George B. McLeod, her daughter Phyllis Ripley and son-in-law, Tom Ripley and their children, Phinneas, Collin, Jacob, Kelsey and Zena Ripley all of Tucson, and her sister, Marion Hutchinson of Dubois, PA, and sister-in-law Elinor Beanland of South Dartmouth, MA. Also survived by Goddaughter Joy King and her mother Proscovia. Services for Mary McLeod will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday June 21 at St. Michael and All Angel’s Episcopal Church at 602 N. Wilmot (5th St. and Wilmot Rd.) Burial in the church yard will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the St. Michael and All Angel’s Organ and discretionary funds or the St. Michael’s School Scholarship Program.

NIEDERBRACH, Olive, 72 years old, passed away June 14, 1997 after a long battle with cancer. Preceded in death by her parents, Lacy and Elizabeth Chandler and her husband, Lt. Col. Kenneth Niederbrach. Survived by sister, Geneva Hart of Decatur, IL and son, Kenneth Scott Niederbrach and daughter, Jennifer Jane Niederbrach, both of Tucson. Olive’s family wishes to thank the TMC Hospice Staff for their loving care and support. Their will be no Funeral. Friends may visit the family Sunday, June 22 from 2:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon at the home of the daughter, Jennifer. Call 298-8454 for directions. In lieu of flowers, Olive’s favorite charity was the Humane Society.

PAYAWAL, Daniel, 41, of Tucson, died June 17, 1997. He is survived by wife, Evelyn; children, Leiana, Nicole and Rebecca;brothers, Abraham Payawal and Raymond Payawal; sisters, Leticia Payawal, Norma Lucio and Christina Pennington. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church on Friday, June 20. Burial will be private. Directed by VALLEY FUNERAL HOME, 327-6341.

ALLEN, F.W. Boyd, died June 15, 1997. He was born September 13, 1907 in Kaseyville, MO. The oldest son of Dr. and Mrs. F.W.Allen. The family moved to Arizona in 1921. Boyd graduated from Tucson High in 1925 and attended the U of A, where he was Student Body President. He served in WWII and remained in the Reserves until his retirement as a Colonel. He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters, K.C. Johnson, Barbara Babbitt, Pauline Kelley, Nancy Johnson and stepchildren, Sidney Thompson and Johnathan H. Michael and two sisters, Mrs. Helen Koogler and Mrs. Pat Winkle. There will be no Funeral Services and the family requests remembrances be made to the Tucson Botanical Gardens, 2150 N. Alvernon Way, Tucson, 85712 or Tucson High Badger Foundation, 400 N. 2nd Ave., Tucson, 85705.

ARTERBURN, Richard P., 67, died June 13, 1997. Arrangements by BRING’S MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 236 S. Scott.

BARRETT, Sherman J., 81, of Tucson, died June 16, 1997. Survivors include: wife, Odell of Tucson; daughters, Barbara (James)Darnell of Tucson; son, John S. Barrett of Kentucky; brother, John Barrett of California; sisters, Laura Wilburn, Dorothy Stratton, both of Kentucky, Marie Ritcher of Florida; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Gerald Barrett in 1992. Mr. Barrett served with the U.S. Navy in WWII. Friends may call at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, Thursday, June 19, 1997 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Graveside Service will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Friday, June 20, 1997 at 10:00 a.m., with Rev. Eugene Sheldon officiating. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd. (at Speedway).

Eleonore H. Durand, 60, Born May 7, 1937. She has gone to join her father, brother, Gat and our Lord after her battle with brain cancer. He granted her release from pain on June 14, 1997. Survived by her husband, Robert R.; daughters, Sylvia and Donna; son, Lothar; stepdaughter, Kathryn L.; grandson, Alex M.; father, Herman and mother, Lilli Hummel of Germany; sisters, Inga Braun and Sylvia Wolf; nieces, nephews and many other relatives in Germany. When Eleonore came to this country she did not know English, but quickly conquered the language and was very proud when she became an American citizen. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting as her hobby making many beautiful items such as afghans, doilies and sweaters most of which she gave as gifts. Eleonore was a loving wife, mother and friend. Memorial Service, 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 20 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway, with Fr. James Coleman officiating. Thefamily suggests donations in Eleonore’s name to the U of A Cancer Research Center, 1501 N. Campbell Avenue, in lieu of flowers.

HULSE, Herbert H., Jr., son of Alma D. and the late Herbert H. Hulse, Sr., died suddenly on June 11, 1997 near his home in Tucson. He is survived by his wife, Linda Bergeron Hulse of Tucson; his mother of Essex, CT; his sister, Margaret A. Coyle of Westport, CT and his nieces, Christi Coyle of El Cerrito, CA and Jill Coyle of Seattle, WA. Mr. Hulse was raised in Old Greenwich, CT, graduated from Greenwich High School, attended Iowa State University, and graduated from Brown University in 1958, where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. Upon graduation, he served with the U.S. Navy where he earned the rank of Lieutenant j.g. He worked for Garvin Bantel, Drexel Harriman Ripley, and Dominick & Dominick in New York, Los Angeles and Houston. After 15 years, he left the brokerage business and went to work for TransOcean Oil and Raymond International in Houston. Mr. Hulse retired and moved to Tucson in 1995. He never met a person – nor an animal – that he didn’t like. Memorial donations may be made in his name to the Tucson Zoological Society.

LYNCH, George V., 70, died June 11, 1997. Originally a native of Brooklyn, New York, he retired as an electrician. Survived by daughters, Christine (Robert) Robbins and Kathleen Lynch, all of Tucson; grandchildren, Keith and Kerri Robbins and Jordan Lynch. In lieu of flowers, his daughters request remembrances in his name to Hospice Family Care, 3838 N. Campbell, Tucson, AZ 85719. Memorial Service will be conducted 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 18 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway, with Fr. Charles Cloud officiating.

MORALES, Refugio V., 101, of Tucson, passed away June 13, 1997. Survived by daughters, Annie (Bob), Cruz; sons, Viviano (Dolores) and Manuel (Annie). Also survived by 24 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 20, 1997 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at CARRILLO’S TUCSON MORTUARY, (South Chapel), 240 S. Stone Ave., with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at St. Augustine Cathedral, 192 S. Stone Ave. Interment to follow at South Lawn Cemetery. Arrangements by CARRILLO’S TUCSON MORTUARY, INC.

NIEDERBRACH, Olive, 72 years old, passed away June 14, 1997 after a long battle with cancer. Preceded in death by her parents, Lacy and Elizabeth Chandler and her husband, Lt. Col. Kenneth Niederbrach. Survived by sister, Geneva Hart of Decatur, IL and son, Kenneth Scott Niederbrach and daughter, Jennifer Jane Niederbrach, both of Tucson. SHEPARD, John H., 75, died June 15, 1997. Father of Marie (Leonard) Morse of Michigan and Kenneth (Sandy) Shepard of Michigan. Companion and friend Darlene Uelman of Tucson; grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive. He was a member of the American Legion Post #109. Memorial Service, 7:00 p.m., Thursday, June 19, 1997 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway, with Chaplain John J. Kaszubski of the American Legion Post #109 officiating. Donations to the American Diabetes Foundation, 2328 W. Royal Palm Dr. Suite D, Phoenix, AZ 85021, would be appreciated.

WIEDMAIER, Lawrence (Larry) 'Bud', 66, of Tucson, died June 16, 1997. Survivors include his children, Lawrence (Shelley) Wiedmaier of Las Cruces, NM, William (Dena), Jon (Jolee) and Deborah Wiedmaier, all of Coeur D’Alene, Idaho, Sharon (Michael) Wiedmaier-Zucker of Tucson; 10 grandchildren and three brothers, Gene of Palm Springs, CA, Richard of San Francisco, CA and Jon of Denver, CO. Friends may call at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY, 5801 E. Grant Rd., Friday, June 20, 1997 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Burial will be at a later date in St. Joseph, Missouri.

ALEXANDER, Esther F., 83, passed away June 11, 1997. Survived by husband of 54 years, John E. Alexander and sons, John R. Alexander of Tucson and James E. Alexander of Las Vegas, Nevada; a brother, Charles L. Foreman of Leucadia, California also survives. Esther was born in Columbus, Nebraska on January 31, 1914 and came to Tucson in 1934 with her parents, Harry and Inez Foreman. Before marriage she worked as a Legal Secretary. When her boys were small, she was active in the Roskruge School PTA and Cub Scouts. Esther was a circle leader in the University Methodist Church and a member of the Rebekah Lodge #4 of the Rebekah Assembly of Arizona. She was an active member of the Pacific Coast Association of Magicians and the Society of American Magicians. Services are pending. Arrangements by HEATHER MORTUARY.

BROOKS, Evelyn Elizabeth, 77, died June 14, 1997. Wife of Olin Brooks; mother of Karen Richards, Ruth Longford and Susan Bieber; six grandchildren also survive.Funeral Services and Burial will be in Nashville, AK. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m to Noon on Tuesday, June 17 at BRING’S MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 236 S. Scott.

BRUMMITT, Johnnie Maude, 90, of Tucson, died June 13, 1997. Predeceased by her husband, Homer A. Brummitt on March 30, 1968. Mrs. Brummitt is the last of five siblings. Friends know of no surviving relatives. No Services are planned. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY & CEMETERY.

BURNS, Jessie W., 92, passed away June 15, 1997. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles L.; a daughter, Janice Johnson and stepchildren, Marian French and Robert Burns. Survivors include her son, James (Doris) and grandchildren, Cheryl Burns, Carolee Riley, Charles Johnson, Laurie Lessing, Shirley Smittle, Nancy Kister and David French. In addition, she is survived by 14 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Burns moved to Tucson from Ohio in 1939 with her family. She was a retired Pima County employee who worked many years in the Recorder’s Office. As was her wish, her remains will be cremated and a private family Memorial Service is pending. In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make donations to the Family Hospice Care, 3443 E. Ft.Lowell, 85716 or to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements by Hudgel’s SWAN FUNERAL HOME, 22nd & Swan.
