Survived by wife, Maria Mendibles; daughters, Suzanne (Steve) Corral, Monica (Luis) Gutierrez; sons, Pete (Lupe) Mendibles, Gilbert (Diane) Mendibles; sister, Carmen (Jesus) Peralta; brother, Eddie (Cruz). Also survived by six grandchildren, Roxanne, Angelica, Jim, Stephanie, Eliza, Pete IV. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 1997 from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at CARILLO’S TUCSON MORTUARY, (North Chapel), 204 S. STRNATKA, Elaine Lee, 49, of Tucson, died June 8, 1997. Survived by husband Ken Strnatka; son Kevin; parents Merl and Genevieve Acton; two brothers Gary and Kent Acton. Elaine was a speech pathologist for T.U.S.D. A recent honors graduate of the University of Arizona. A Tucson resident since 1982. BALLESTEROS, Diego C., 84, of Tucson, passed away June 4, 1997. Survived by wife, Sofia; daughters, Lydia (Frank), Mary (Armando), Esther (Ramon) and Melva (Benny); sons, Robert (Romelia), Diego (Christina), Manny (Esther), Frank, Rudy, Danny Ballesteros and Henry Gonzales; 30 grandchildren; 64 great-grandchildren and numerous great-great-grandchildren. BORDING, Mary Elizabeth, born in Henning, Tennessee, January 30, 1916 to Florence (Laird) Morris and Joe Henry Morris, lived with her parents and her brother, Joe Henry Morris, Jr. in Memphis, Tennessee. A Tucsonian since 1947, she passed away suddenly June 2, 1997. She is the beloved mother of John Michael Bording of Tucson, Donald Joe (Joanne) Bording of Brighton, Colorado and Carole (Bill) Duncan of Garden Grove, California. Adored grandmother of Jim Moore of India, Jill (Mike) Carrere of Phoenix, Lisa Duncan (Tom) Roepke of Garden Grove, California, Lesli Burton of Tucson, Cheryl (Ken) McIntosh of Brighton, Colorado, Lori (Tom) Colamaria of Woodland Hills, California, Stoney (Julie) Neufang of Murray, Kentucky. Devoted great-grandmother of Thomas Burton, TJ Colamaria, Matthew McIntosh, William McIntosh, David McIntosh, Jacob McIntosh, Kyle Neufang and Ryan Neufang. Cherished aunt of Bonnie Jo (George) Weeks and Joe Henry Morris of Memphis, Tennessee. Liz loved her family and friends and brought joy and laughter to their lives. She loved nature in all its forms, golf, John Grisham novels, period movies, Jerry Seinfeld and the Larry Sanders show, silly songs, funny jokes and little creatures. She was a marvelous cook and an avid reader. She will be greatly missed. A celebration of her Life and Spirit will be held Saturday, June 7 at the Vineyard Christian Community Church at the corner of 5th Street and 2nd Avenue, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. All of her friends are welcome to join in our memories and participate in sharing 'Liz' Stories.

DIXON, David Benjamin 'Ben', 18, of Tucson, was taken home Wednesday, June 4, 1997 in Williamston, NC. He is the beloved son of Bob and Nina Dixon; cherished grandson of Sid and Mary Dutton; loving brother of Lori-Ann, Chris, Mason, Mary Ann, Morgan and Eric Dixon. An aunt, Gene (Wesley) Warren; uncle, David Dutton and many very good friends also survive him. Ben graduated in May of this year from Catalina High School, where he served on the Student Council and was a member of the Varsity Basketball Team. He was an inspiration and a joy to his family and friends. A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 8, 1997 at Fort Lowell L.D.S. Chapel, 3700 E. Fort Lowell Rd. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, June 9, 1997 at 10:00 a.m. at Fort Lowell L.D.S. Chapel. Interment at L.D.S. Cemetery. The family requests that memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, be made to a charity of choice. Arrangements by EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY.

FISCHER, Jack W., 73, died June 4, 1997. Survived by his wife of 49 years, Evelyn G. Calder Fischer; daughter, Cheri R. Davis and her husband, William C. Davis, Jr.; grandson, William 'Billy' Davis III and his fiance, Kris Smith; granddaughter, Christina R.Davis. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim Fischer and Mazie Wade Fischer. Jack was born in Warwick, KS. He graduated from Republic, Kansas High School in the 'Class of 42'. Moved to Brea, CA in 1944. Went into the Navy C.B.’s during WWII. Upon discharge he took his apprenticeship in the Plumber’s Union #582, Santa Ana, CA. He married Evelyn Calder and lived in Brea, CA for 35 years. upon his retirement in 1983 he moved to Rancho de Las Osa in Sasabe, AZ which was managed by his daughter and her family. He helped with the ranch work as well as doing all the plumbing work for the ranch. Rancho de La Osa was sold in 1996 and the Fischer and Davis families moved to the Three Points area to a new ranch called Coyote Mountain Ranch. Jack was a life member of VFW Post #10254 in Three Points, transferring from Brea, CA, Post #5384 where he was a Charter Member. He belonged to the American Legion Post #181, Brea, CA and UA Plumbers and Steamfitters Union #582, Santa Ana, CA. Graveside Service 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 9, 1997 at Evergreen Cemetery with Rev. Joe Hawkins officiating. Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Sunday, June 8 at BRING’S MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 236 S. Scott.

JARVIS, Woodrow W., 83, passed away June 4, 1997. He is survived by Mary, his wife of 59 years. Also survived by sisters, Ruby Stice of Midland, TX, Prudence Newsom of Kirkland, WA, Lela Norton of Clarendon, TX and Margaret Ellis of Ft. Worth, TX. Also survived by daughter, Kay (Wiley) Murphy of Tucson; grandchildren, Kelly (Dan) Sombert of Overland Park, KS, Wendy (Bill) Walsh of Tucson, Mark (Anna) Murphy of Portland, OR; and great-grandchildren, Zachary and Lindsay Somberg, Hannah, Alison and Morgan Walsh and Liam Murphy. Mr. Jarvis was born July 6, 1913 in Munday, TX. He moved to Eloy, AZ to begin farming cotton in 1945. He served on the Eloy City Council and the Eloy Elementary School Board. He was also an active member of the Eloy Methodist Church. Mr. Jarvis was a pioneer farmer in Avra Valley in 1950 and moved to Tucson in 1961. He retired in 1982 after selling his farm to the City of Tucson. Visitation will be Sunday evening, June 8 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the ARIZONA MORTUARY, 7 E. University Blvd. A Graveside Service will be held Monday, June 9 at 9:00 a.m. at South Lawn Cemetery, 5401 S. Park Ave., Rev. Jerry Haas officiating. LONGEWAY, Miss Mary, 78, died Sunday, June 1, 1997, at Maplewood Health Care Center in Jackson, TN, of heart failure. Miss Longeway had lived in Tucson, AZ for 42 years and was a retired department head with Hughes Aircraft in Tucson. She is survived by two brothers, Frederick Peter Longeway, Jr. of West Virginia and Richard Longeway of Jackson. Cremation. No Services. SHEMBERGER, Samuel W. 'Sam', 98, died May 29, 1997. Survived by many friends. He was a WWI Veteran serving in the Marine Corps. Memorial Service, 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 10 at BRING’S MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 236 S. Scott, with Rev. Jim Howard officiating.

ZARRO, Wally, 69, of Tucson, died Thursday, June 5, 1997. Survivors include: wife, Barbara of Tucson; his buddy, 'Boomer'; his daughter, Karen; sister, Ann (Jerry) Rzewnicki; several nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Shirley (Dennis) Fialkowski. Wally, who had an extreme love of life and battled several years, finally lost his life to his illness. He served in the Navy in WWII, member of American Legion, Post #36, retired U.S. Post Office Letter Carrier from Chicago and Hoffman Estates, active Leader in the Postal Union. Loved his bowling and golf and was a professional wrestler called the 'Polish Eagle'. Friends may call at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, Sunday, June 8, 1997 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., with Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be at Saint Francis De Sales, Monday, June 9, 1997. Burial will follow at Our Lady of the Desert. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd. (at Speedway).

BRUBAKER, Dale, 74, died June 3, 1997 after a valiant struggle with cancer. Born in Lebanon, PA, he was a graduate of John Harris High School in Harrisburg, PA. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946 and took part in the Okinawa campaign. After earning a Bachelor of Music degree from Boston University and a Master of Music from the University of Texas, he taught orchestra in the public schools of Wichita Falls, TX from 1952 to 1961, and held a similar position in TUSD from 1961 to 1988. As violinist and violist, he performed with numerous orchestras and chamber music groups, including the Tucson Symphony, Tucson Pops and the Flagstaff Festival Orchestra. Dale’s great love was teaching music to children and his two published books of music for young string players are played and loved by many students. He is survived by his wife, Carol; his four children, Marina, Steven, Catherine (Dileep) and David and his granddaughter, Asha. It is suggested that memorial donations be made to the TUSD Music Scholarship Fund, Tucson Boys Chorus, Tucson Junior Stings or Philharmonia Orchestra. A Memorial Service will be held at the Unitarian-Universalist Church at 4831 E. 22nd Street, June 8 at 3:00 p.m.

COX, Elizabeth Sue, October 5, 1929 to June 4, 1997. Sue lives on through her children, Gordon Lee Cox, Jr. (Lee) and Lorinda Anne Cox (Lori) of Tucson. Her sister, Deidre Anne Vaughn of Phoenix and many dear friends will miss her deeply. The ocean off the coast of Santa Barbara awaits her as we celebrate her life and share our memories. Mom, you are gone from our sight – that is all. The door has opened into your rose garden and you are welcomed with glad shouts of 'Here She Comes!' We love you always.

FIRTH, Clara Rea, widow of Harry Stanley Firth, died May 21, 1997 peacefully. Born January 12, 1895 in Chicago, IL. Predeceased by her parents, Charles F. Rea and Amy Colson Rea as well as her siblings, DeEtta Rea Perry, Norman F. Rea and Charles F. Rea. She is survived by her son, Richard W. (Annette Berger) Firth, Sr., Ruth C. (Arnold E.) Kelm. Grandchildren, Richard (Lorraine) Firth, Annette M. Firth, JoAnne Kelm Davis and Robert A. Kelm and six great-grandchildren and two nieces and one nephew. Clara and Harry came to Tucson in October 1930 for Harry’s health due to his WWI injuries. They moved to 'The Ranch' now Tri-Pointe Plaza and raised poultry, pigeons, rabbits, custom dressed, which they sold to guest and dude ranches. Harry died in September 1942. She was a member of Mountain View Presbyterian, Northminster Presbyterian and Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Arizona Boys Ranch (Russell Cottage) and the oldest WWI widow of the Gold Star Wives local chapter. During her lifetime she marveled at changes from gas light, horsedrawn streetcars to electricity, phones, radio, television, airplanes and space travel. After her retirement of operating her own guest ranch she traveled by plane and ship going to many places including Alaska, Far East and Caribbean. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30p.m., Saturday, June 7, 1997 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 1949 E. Helen, Tucson, AZ, Pastor Baer officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be sent to Shriners Crippled Children’s Hospitals and Shrine Burn Centers or Casa De Los Ninos. Arrangements by ARIZONA MORTUARY.

FRAVEL, Margaret Lucille, 87, of Tucson, AZ, died May 29, 1997. Preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Fravel; survived by daughter, Mary Ann Cass of Monrovia, IN; brother, Otis O. (Lois) Cassida of Pearce, AZ; grandson Steven L. Cass, two great-grandsons; and one great-granddaughter; niece, Sally Newland. Mrs. Fravel has been a resident of AZ for the last 27 years, moving here from Bridgeport, IN. Private Graveside Services will be held Friday June 6, 1997, at the Flora Park Cemetery, Indianapolis, IN. Under the direction of Conkle Funeral Home, Speedway, IN. HOBBS, James F., passed away May 21, 1997 in St. Mary’s Hospital in Tucson, AZ. Services were in Clinton, MO.

HUNTER, Donald Horace, son of Charles R. and Inez Pangborn Hunter, was born June 28, 1910 in Enid, OK and died May 26, 1997 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, IA at the age of 86 years, 10 months and 28 days. Don grew up on the family farm south of Scranton and attended the Scranton Consolidated School. On January 1, 1930 he was united in marriage with Helen Faith Paup at the Methodist Parsonage in Scranton. They were the parents of three children, Phyllis D., Ilene and Ron. They made their home on a farm close to the home place southeast of Scranton. They later moved to Rockwell City. In the spring of 1942, they purchased a farm west of Churdan. After several moves, they made their home in Jefferson in 1982. They also owned and operated motels and resorts in Iowa, Arizona, Missouri and Minnesota. Don’s hobbies included tinkering and repairing, but his greatest love was fishing. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Jefferson, the Carriage Travel Club, Greene County Campers and the Lion’s Club. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Helen in 1989; his daughter, Phyllis Hoyle French in 1987 and two brothers, Edmund and Robert. On March 2, 1991, Don married Velma Young. The couple made their home in Jefferson. They enjoyed traveling to Arizona in the winter and to Minnesota in the summer. He is survived by his wife, Velma of Jefferson; one son, Ron (Sharon) Hunter of Bena, MN; one daughter, Ilene (Carl) Trockmann of Tucson, AZ; two stepchildren, Marilyn Ulman of St. Mary’s, IA and Linda Lee Young of Des Moines, IA; 10 grandchildren, Kim (Kevin) Sellin of Bemidiji, MN, Rhonda (Lance) Allen of San Diego, CA, Lynn Hunter of Braynard, MN, Don Hoyle of Lenexa, KS, Steve (Sherry) Hoyle of Jefferson, IA, Sherwood (Jeanie) Hoyle of Scranton, IA, Vicki (Jeff) Clausen of Carroll, IA, Jim (Shanda) Hoyle of Grand Junction, IA and Deborah (John) Cellitto and Lester (Ann) Hoskinson, all of Tucson, AZ; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren, Mary Lynn (Brian) Ross of New Virginia, IA and John (Tammi) Taylor of Altoona, IA; two step-great-grandchildren. Other survivors include four brothers, George (Mildred) Hunter of Scranton, IA, Jack (Patti) Hunter of Dallas, TX, James P. (Cleo) Hunter of Scranton, IA and Paul Hunter of Council Bluffs, IA; two sisters, Ruth (Bob) Miller of Sun City West, AZ and Mary Shelton of Tucson, AZ; his brothers-in-law, Russell (Carol) Paup of California, Jim Blackford of Indianola, IA, Edwin Blackford of St. Charles, IA and Glen Blackford of New Virginia, IA; three sisters-in-law, Helen Dutton of Oscela, IA, Marjorie (Art) Linsley and Maxine Norlin, all of Indianola, IA; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Prayer Service was May 29, 1997 at Hastings Funeral Home, Jefferson, IA. Funeral Service was Friday, May 30, 1997 at the First United Methodist Church, Jefferson, IA. Interment at Scranton Township Cemetery, Scranton, IA.
