BIRCHER, Pauline, age 78, died December 28, 1997 in Santa Maria, CA, in her sleep. Born in Erick, OK on June 11, 1919. Preceded in death by her husband, Les. Survived by her son, Steve and his wife Gretchen; and grandchildren, Katie and Terry of Santa Maria, CA. Polly managed the gift shop for the Association on American Indian Affairs in New York City and then managed Bahti Indian Arts for nearly 15 years until her second retirement this past May. She was an adopted grandma to Kim, Yuri, and Santiago Bahti of Tucson. A lady of exceptional talent, humor and an independent soul, she will be missed by many.

BRUNDAGE, William Joseph III, 45, of Tucson, passed away January 1, 1998. Survived by mother, Nancy E. Brundage; brother, Matthew David Brundage, both of Tucson; father, William Brundage, Jr. of Texas; sister, Nanette Marie Jepson of Tucson; nieces, Shannon Brundage and Kathleen Jepson – all who dearly loved him. Preceded in death by sister, Kathleen R. Brundage. He served in the Air Force in Vietnam. Friends may call 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. with Rosary at 7:00 p.m., Monday, EVERGREEN MORTUARY. Mass of Christian Burial to be held 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, St. Francis de Sales Church. Interment to follow Evergreen Cemetery, N. Oracle & W. Miracle Mile.

BURGER, Dorothy M., age 82, of Tucson, died January 4, 1998. She was a homemaker. Survivors include daughters, Caroline Nuil of Duarte, CA, Sandra (Thomas) Berkhouse of Tucson, and Dolores (Sidney) Hiatt of Indianapolis, IN; sons, Melvin (Eva) Burger of Lincoln, CA; and Gary (Donna) Burger of Lake Linden, Michigan; also survived by 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Graveside Services will be at South Lawn Cemetery, January 7, 1998 at 1:30 p.m. with Dale Jacobson officiating. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, DODGE CHAPEL, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd. (at Speedway).

ELLENSOHN, Ulrich J., 89, died January 3, 1998. Survived by his wife, Betty; sons, Ed (Kaye) and Bob (Terri) Ellensohn; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; one brother; and two sisters. Ulrich was born in Austria, and a resident of Tucson for the past 18 years. Private family service were held at EAST LAWN PALMS CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd.

GODDARD, Charles K., age 60, beloved son of Phyllis and Harold Gray, passed away unexpectedly January 2, 1998. Born November 29, 1937, he is survived by his parents and his daughters, Susan Warner, Sheri Goddard and Amy Goddard as well as his sister, Sharon Rivero; his two grandsons, Bradley and Christopher Warner and son-in- law, Steven Warner. Charles was a U of A alumnis and served his country as a marine 1954-1963. Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, January 6, 1998, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and services will be 1:00 pm Wednesday, January 7 at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY, 5801 E. Grant Rd.

GOLDSTEIN, Susan, 93, of Tucson, died January 3, 1998. She is survived by sons, Dr. Arthur (Elizabeth) Goldstein of Monaco, Bernie (Joy) Goldstein of Downey, CA; daughters, Judy Goldstein of Culver City, CA, Rita (Sheldon) Dreebin of San Diego, CA; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Frank Sternberg of Marblehead, MA and several nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Harry Goldstein on July 11, 1984. Mrs. Goldstein was a 51 year member of Congregation Anshei Israel. Graveside Service was held Monday, 9:30 a.m., Congregation Anshei Israel Section of Evergreen Cemetery, with Cantor Ivor Lichterman, Congregation Anshei Israel officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in the name of Susan Goldstein to Pioneer Women. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY & CEMETERY, N. Oracle & W. Miracle Mile.

GONZALES, Rafaelita A., of Tucson, passed away January 2, 1998. Survived by husband, Hector M. Gonzales; parents, Javier and Josefina Acosta; father and mother in-law, Manuel and Alicia Gonzales; stepdaughter, Danielle Gonzales; stepson, Hector Gonzales Jr.; brother, Jose Acosta; best friend, Graciela Ortega; sisters-in-law, Nellie Gonzalez Cecilia Contreras, Sandra Gonzales, Luz Lucero, Yolanda Gonzales, Alicia Gonzales, Silvia Gonzales, Isabel Bravo and Claudia Garcia; brothers-in-law, Pedro and David Gonzales; also survived by many beloved uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 8, 1998 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at CARRILLO’S TUCSON MORTUARY, South Chapel, 240 S. Stone Ave. with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered Friday, January 9, 1998 at 9:00 a.m. at Santa Cruz Church. Interment to follow at Holy Hope Cemetery. Arrangements by CARRILLO’S TUCSON MORTUARY. Rafaelita attended Pima College, graduated and transferred to the U of A to major in Education.

GREENBAUM, M.D., Philip Samuel, 89, a Psychiatrist of Tucson, died January 4, 1998. He is survived by his daughters, Joan (Gerald) Miller of Seattle, WA; Judith (Michael) Strausser of Tempe, AZ; Susan (Edwin) Williams of St. Louis, MO; grandchildren, Alissa Strausser of Tempe, AZ; David Williams of Albuquerque, NM; Ron Williams of Chicago, IL; Adam Miller; and Janet Miller, both of Seattle, WA; two nephews, Robert Hess and Martin Hess. Dr. Greenbaum was predeceased by wife, Dorothe Greenbaum and granddaughter, Carrie Strausser; and a sister, Hortense Hess. Service Tuesday, 11:00 a.m., EVERGREEN MORTUARY, with Cantor Ivor Lichterman of Congregation Anshei Israel officiating. Interment in Congregation Anshei Israel section of Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in the name of Philip S. Greenbaum to any mental health agency or a charity or one’s choice. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY & CEMETERY, N. McMULLEN, Richard Howell Sr., 83, of Tucson, died January 3, 1998. Richard was a master painter. He was preceded in death by wife, Crystal and grandson, Donny McAlister. Survivors include three children, Richard Jr. (Billie-Lee) of San Diego, Robert (Carole), Delia (Keith) Curnow; two grandchildren, Matthew David (Linda) of San Diego and Stacey Jeanne; two great-grandchildren, Kristen and Jessica of San Diego; sister, Shirley Marinus; nephew, Charles McMullen (Janet); grandnephews, Danny and Timothy. Funeral Service will be at ADAIR DODGE, Wednesday, January 7, 1998 at 1:00 p.m. with Wes Grimes officiating. Interment will be private. Memorial donations may be made to Salvation Army. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, DODGE CHAPEL, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd. (at Speedway). Services for Crystal and Richard will be Wednesday.

RAHM, Arthur Henry, 70, of Tucson, died December 26, 1997. He is survived by his wife, Martha; sister, June Toglia of Minneapolis. Mr. Rahm was a retired insurance agent for Occidental Life. He was on the board of Right To Life, a member of the Eagles, National Rifle Association, a Pi Kappa Phi, and was an American Legion member. He served in the U.S. Army. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, January 10, 1998 at 1:30 p.m. at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 1946 E. Lee. Inurnment will be at Holy Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Saints Peter and Paul Church, St. Vincent De Paul Society or the Tucson Chapter of the Right To Life. Arrangements by HEATHER MORTUARY.

Lloyd Arthur Sjulstad - Memorial Services for Lloyd Arthur Sjulstad, Lt Col. USAF, Retired, age 75, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wed., January 7, 1998 at 12041 W. Magee Rd. Pastor Kevin Kritzer of The Fountain of Life Lutheran Church will officiate. Mr. Sjulstad passed away January 1, 1998 at Wilson N. Jones Hospital in Sherman, TX. Lloyd served in WWII, was a fighter pilot in Korea and also flew 105 missions in Vietnam. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and Oak Leaf Clusters in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a loving husband, father and brother and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Surviving are, wife, Pat Sjulstad of Bonham, TX; children, Larry, Paula and Cindy of Tucson, AZ and Lesley of Evergreen, CO.; stepchildren, James and Jenny Tongate of TX; sisters, Betty, Beverly and Sharon of Tucson, AZ. Former wife, Peggy Tillman of Tucson, AZ; 18 grand and four great-grandchildren.

CLOHESSY, Bernard Francis, 91, died January 2, 1998. Father of Patricia Waite of Tucson and Thomas Clohessy of Sonoma, California. Brother of John Clohessy and James Clohessy, both of Irwin, PA; and Mary Peters of Orlando, FL. Granddaughter, Kimball Clohessy also survives. He was a member of the Elks Club; and an avid golfer and scored a hole-in-one at Greensburg Country Club. Services and interment in Pennsylvania. Arrangements by BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

GOLEMBIESKI, Ben M., 91, of Tucson, died at home January 1, 1998. Born in Redding, PA, he lived the last 45 years in Lakeside and Tucson, AZ. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen (1986); sisters, Emily and Mary; brothers, Joseph, Chester, Phil and Hank. He is survived by his children, Evelyn of Chicago, Jerome and Kenneth of Tucson; his siblings, Eddie, John, Ann, Jeanette, Reggie; his grandchildren, Ken, Judy, Donald, Gayle, Denise, Patrick, Danny and a large extended family. Visitation will be held at Jackson Mortuary in Showlow, AZ, Sunday, January 4, 1998, beginning at noon, with the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 5, 1998 at St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Church with Father Oliver officiating. Graveside services will be held at Lakeside Cemetery following the church service. A Memorial Mass will be held in Tucson, Saturday, January 10, 1998, 11:00 a.m., at St. Pius X Church, 1800 N. Camino Pio Decimo. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice. The family thanks Dr. Marilyn Hart for her care and concern for Ben over the past ten years.

HUGHES, Lola M., 76, died January 3, 1998. Wife of Glen L. Hughes of Tucson. Mother of James (Sue) Hughes of Birmingham, AL; and Jeffry (Anna) Hughes of San Jose, CA. Grandmother of Laura Bass and Adrienne McGee. Great-grandmother of Jordan Bass, Turner Bass, Kellen McGee, and Kennedy McGee. Memorial Service 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 6 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

JOHNSON, Herman Benjamin, 93, of Green Valley, died January 2, 1998. He is survived by sons, Gary Johnson of Gaines, MI; Monroe Johnson of Springfield, VA; daughter, Areta Johnson of Tucson; grandchildren, Gail Joy Johnson, Pamela Jean Johnson, Gregg Goetzke, Gay Lynn Goetzke, Lenore Goetzke, Lisa Angele Johnson, and Richard Andrew Johnson; great-grandchildren, Ryan Paul Tubbs, Amanda Jean Tubbs, Kaylen Goetzke-Rux, and Riana Goetzke-Rux; sister, Vesta Johnson Coyle of Pasadena, CA–the last of the 12 children of Joel and Ida Clara (Berquam) Johnson. Predeceased by his wife, Olive L. Johnson on January 18, 1981. Mr. Johnson graduated from Minot Teachers College, Minot, ND, and later taught elementary school in the area. He was a 32° mason and a member of Sabar Shrine Temple in Tucson. Service Monday, 2:00 p.m., EVERGREEN MORTUARY, with Rev. Edward L. Eddy officiating. Interment Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY & CEMETERY, N. Oracle & W. Miracle Mile.

LUZNEY, Viva E., 91, died January 2, 1998. Survived by her four daughters, Lois O’Day, Esther Moody, Eunice Carlson, and Phyllis Williams; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 7, 1998 at EAST LAWN PALMS CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd.

STACEY, Rose, 94, of Tucson, died December 30, 1997. Preceded in death by husband, Henry Stacey. Survived by son, Henry Stacy Jr. (Helen); daughter, Eileen Plunk (Raymond); several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Rose will be deeply missed by all her loving family and friends. Memorial Service will be at Grace St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 2:00 p.m. January 6, 1998 with Gordon McBride officiating. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd. (at Speedway).

WALKER, Jessie Lee, 77, died December 30, 1997. She was one of ten children born to Mrs. Viola Daniels Walker and William Walker of Dawson, GA. She was raised in Hartford, CT, attending schools in Hartford and Stamford, CT. After finishing school, she relocated to Stamford in 1938 and joined the Arthur Franklin family as Au Pair and family member. When the Franklin family relocated in Tucson in 1978 Jessie Walker had become a member of the Franklin family and a confidant of Ruth Franklin Mensch. Jessie and Ruth were like sisters and co-parents to the Franklin children, James and Leslie Franklin. Jessie leaves five sisters and one brother: Pearl Brown, Springfield, MA; Leila Andrade, Boston, MA; Mattie Laster, Bloomfield, CT; Viola Henderson, Hartford, CT; Minnie Lewis, New York, NY; and James Walker of Hartford, CT. She is preceded in death by sister, Annie Manns; and brothers, John and Kelly Walker. She also leaves a number of nieces and nephews. Members of her extended family, Ruth Franklin Mensch, Leslie and his wife, Sally and their sons, Johnathon, Peter, and David; James and his wife, Michaeleen ”Mike” Franklin. Also devoted friends, Delores Evans and Rose Foster. All are left with fond memories of Jessie for her kindness and devotion. No one who knew her will ever forget her. Funeral Services will be held 1:00 p.m., Monday, January 5, 1998 at EAST LAWN PALMS CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd. Visitation will be from 12:30 until Service time. Burial to follow at East Lawn Palms Cemetery.
