John P. Holbrook, age 71, died March 26, 1998. He was born on July 12, 1926 in San Francisco, CA and moved to Tucson in 1928. He is preceded in death by his father, Dr. Wm. Paul Holbrook; his mother, Margaret Bressler Holbrook; and his sister, Elizabeth Holbrook Whidden. He is survived by his wife, Jane Wraith Holbrook; his children, Margaret Holbrook, Elizabeth (Tom Holycross) Holbrook, Paul (Marsha) Holbrook, Bruce (Anna) Holbrook, Charity Holbrook, Catherine (David) Boscacci, James Weed; and grandchildren, Alexander ('Hondo') Holbrook, Anthony ('A.Z.') Holbrook, William ('Will') Holbrook, Johanna Holbrook, Henry Holbrook, Bill Boscacci and Christopher Boscacci. He is also survived by his brother, Bruce Holbrook and seven nieces and nephews. He attended Sam Hughes Elementary School, Mansfield Junior High School, Tucson High School and Virginia Polytechnic Military Academy. In 1949, he received his B.A. from the University of Arizona. In 1953 he received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Boston University. Having joined the Air Force, he took his internship and residency programs at Letterman's General Hospital in San Francisco. From 1957 to 1959, he was stationed at Francis E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne Wyoming, where he was Chief of Medicine. From 1959 until 1963, he was stationed at Lakenheath Hospital in England and as Director of Hospital Services and Chief of Medicine, he started and was founding President of the Anglo-American Medical Society. He received the Commendation Medal from the Air Force for his work with the Society. From 1963 until 1965, he was Chief of Medical Services at Fairfield Air Force Base in Spokane, WA. He retired from the Air Force in 1965 and returned to Tucson, where he joined the Holbrook-Hill Medical group. He went into private practice in 1979. After his retirement in 1992, he divided his time between residences in Tucson and Bigfork, MT. Memorial Services will be held at St. Phillips in the Hills at 11:30 on April 4. Friends are invited to join the family at the Tucson Country Club following the services. The family requests that Memorial gifts may be made to the TMC Foundation Cancer Fund for Patient Support Services in Tucson or the Quick Rescue and Response in Bigfork. LEWIS, Mrs. Velma DeHaven, 95, of Tucson, Arizona and Greensboro, NC, died on Sunday, March 29, at her residence in Greensboro. Born in Roanoke, Virginia on December 17, 1902, she was the daughter of Mary Jane Richardson DeHaven and Calvin Ellis DeHaven. She is survived by a daughter, Jane Lewis Shetler and son-in-law, Dr. Jerold D. Shetler of Greensboro; three grandchildren, Jerold David Shetler II of Mexico City, Suzanne DeHaven Shetler Cheek of Athens, Georgia and Joseph Todd Shetler of San Antonio, Texas; and six great-grandchildren. She was the oldest of five children, and is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ardith Gallimore and Mrs. Gladys Hall of High Point. She was preceded in death by two husbands, brothers, Lloyd David Lewis and Marvin R. Lewis and a son, James, who died in infancy. She is also survived by two step sons, Dr. Marcel Lewis of Bennington, Vermont and the Rev. Donald Lewis of Glens Falls, New York. She lived for 61 years in Tucson, Arizona, before coming to Greensboro in 1991 to be near her daughter and sisters. She was a charter member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Tucson, where she maintained membership until her death. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, at First Presbyterian Church, conducted by her son-in-law, Dr. Jerold Shetler, Pastor. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to First Presbyterian Church Life Center. Hanes-Lineberry, North Elm Chapel is assisting the family.

LOPEZ, Antonio 'Tony', 74, of Tucson, passed away March 29, 1998. Preceded in death by step-daughter, Yolanda Moreno. Survived by wife, Lupe Lopez; daughters, Adeline Casillas, Esther Serrano (Edward) from Cypress, CA, Stella Story from Southgate, CA, Teresa Winters from Ft. Meade, MD and Aurora Callaway (Thomas); step-sons, Robert Moreno (Dorothy), Raymond Moreno from Bisbee, AZ and Rodolfo Moreno from Bisbee, AZ; also survived by 21 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Visitations will be held on Thursday, April 2, 1998 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at CARRILLO'S TUCSON MORTUARY, (North Chapel), 204 S. Stone Ave. with Rosary at 7:00 p.m., Mass will be offered Friday, April 3, 1998 10:30 a.m., St. Margaret's Church. Interment will follow at Holy Hope Cemetery. Antonio M. PAIN, Edward, 76, of Tucson, passed away Sunday, March 29, 1998. Edward was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Albert Pain. Mr. Pain is survived by his wife, Celia; children, Edward, Richard, Albert, Cathy, Eugene and Christina; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; brothers, Octavio, Armando, Alfred, Oscar, and Fred. A Memorial Service with Rosary will be at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, April 2, 1998 at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5401 S. Park Ave.

PEARCY, William Thomas, 96, died March 31, 1998. Husband of Dorothy A. Pearcy; father of James O. Pearcy of Houston, TX, and Mary A. Gilbert of Tustin, CA; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 57 years, Amelia C. Pearcy. Four step-children, Annette Carey of Dallas, Diane Fozdar of Dallas, Dr. Allan Magee of Paris, France and Brian Magee of Tucson; and one step-grandchild also survive. RIVERA, Joe Richard, 27, of Tucson, died Friday, March 27, 1998. He is survived by his paternal grandmother, Maria Flores; maternal grandmother, Francisca Rivera; mother, Pauline Rivera; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. A Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 1, 1998, starting at 5:00 p.m. at First Yoeme Christian Church, 7658 S. Camino Vahcom. ROMERO, Celia Y., 68, of Tucson, passed away March 28, 1998. Survived by husband, Santiago; daughters, Sandra (Thurman) Brooks, Juanita (Hector) Felix, Josie (Al) Gomez, Didi (Frank) Soto, Cynthia (Peter) Mendivil, Josie Romero and Clara Moreno; sons, Ron (Eveline) Soto, Jimmy (Maria) Soto, Frank (Sandy) Soto, Santiago Jr.(Dorothy) Romero and Tommy (Rosie) Soto; sisters, Anita Nigreville and Alice Chavez; also survived by 41 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitations will be held on Wednesday, April 1, 1998 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at CARRILLO'S TUCSON MORTUARY, (North Chapel), 204 S. STEPPI, Mary L., 79, of Tucson, died March 27, 1998. She is survived by daughters, Mara Goldschmidt of MO, Lea Friton of CA; son, Gerald Friton of MO; sisters, Enid Cutler of AK, Barbara Fumagalli of WI; granddaughters, Caroline Goldschmidt of MO and Susan Friton of MO. TESTA, Joseph C., he was taken from us on March 29, 1998. Born in Providence, RI on October 18, 1928. TREGO, Marvin E., 77, passed away March 30, 1998. Survived by wife, Rita; sons, Doug (Diane) Trego of Tucson and James (Alice) Trego of Salt Lake City, Utah; daughter, Dianne (Keith) Runion of Little Rock, Arkansas; step-sons, Michael and Kevin McCarthy; and step-daughter, Diane Schlotterer. Preceded in death by his grandson and survived by seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson; and one brother; and four sisters. David A. Valencia, 48, of Tucson, died Sunday, March 29, 1998. He was preceded in death by his father, Ramon Valencia. He is survived by his mother, Maria Valencia; sisters, Cecilia Valencia, Natalie Valencia, Martha (Albert) Yucupicio, Rachel (Peter) Romero, Betty (Alfonso) Gallego, Norma (Joe); brothers, Oscar Valencia, Raymond Valencia; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. David was a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran. Services will be held at Santa Rosa Mission Chapel, 2015 N. Calle Central, Visitation on Thursday, beginning at 4:00 p.m. with a recitation of the Rosary at 7:30 p.m. and a Funeral Mass on Friday, April 3, 1998 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Holy Hope Cemetery. YOUNG, Mary Louise, passed away on Sunday, March 29, 1998. In her last year of life, she was at Life Care Center–a nursing home. She is survived by her husband, Lyle M. Young of Tucson; and two sons, Randal Young of Show Low, AZ and Roger Young of Tucson. She is also survived by a brother, L. Blain Mohr of Gallipolis, Ohio, Donald Mohr of Las Vegas, NV; nephew, Mark Mohr of Vinton, Ohio; and a niece, Marie Difillipantonio of Newtown, Connecticut. She was educated in the public schools of Gallipolis, Ohio and earned a B.S. in Education at Ohio State University and a M.A. degree from Teachers College, Columbia University, New York City. She was a music teacher in the schools of Franklin, Ohio, Alliance, Ohio, Columbus, Ohio, Amphitheater Junior High School in Tucson and taught an evening music education class at Queens College in the Spring of 1952. Her church affiliations included the First Baptist Church in Gallipolis, the First Presbyterian Church in Normal, Illinois and St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Tucson. She was a member of Phi Mu, a social sorority, and Delta Omicron, a music fraternity. Her cremains will be placed in the Columbarium at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Andrew's at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel on Friday, April 3. In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made to the Building Fund at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, located at 750 West Chapala Drive, Tucson, 85704. Arrangements by ARIZONA MORTUARY.

Christian Erich Bayer, age 24, died on March 30, 1998. He is survived by his son, Gabriel Christian, 19 months; his fiancee, Tracy Lynn Vega; his parents, Frederick Bayer and Barbara (Benny) Spinelli; his sisters, Jennifer (Janus) Poppe and Robin Jeanne Bayer; and step-sister, Lisa (Paul) Tessen. Also survived by his grandparents, Frederick and Janet Bayer; and Jack and Mary Louise Troy; his aunts, Suzanne (Phil) Reinecker, Mary Ellen (Tim) Hobby; uncles, Peter (Arlene) Troy and David Troy; also many cousins and friends.
Forever in our hearts and minds. May the light at the end of the tunnel shine brightly upon you and bring peace to your soul. Your spirit is with us always. You will be greatly missed.

CHILLE, Jean, 87, of Tucson, died Wednesday, March 25, 1998. She is survived by her sons, Richard (Helen) Chille, Ronald (Elsie); brother, Frank Starapoli; sister, Sally Mula; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held at Noon on Saturday, April 4, 1998 at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd. Arrangements by HEATHER MORTUARY.

CUDE, Marjorie L., passed away Monday, March 30, 1998 at her home in Elgin, Arizona. Mrs. Cude grew up in Kansas City, Missouri and served in the Women's Army Corp as a radio operator during World War II. While serving with the military she met her husband with whom she remained married for 53 years. After moving to Tucson in 1956, she spent her time raising her family and working part-time typing dissertation's for graduate students at the University of Arizona. She later worked for eight years as an administrative assistant for Utah International Mining Co. She was a devoted animal lover and an avid gardener during her years in Tucson. She was busy planting and landscaping her new home in Elgin at the time of her death. She is survived by her husband, Jessie Cude of Elgin; and sister, Lorena Mae Holland of Lee's Summit, Missouri; children include, Jesse Cude of Salinas, CA and Dana Cude of Elgin, Arizona; grandchildren include, Gavin, Craig, Kelly, Michael and David. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 3 at the ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd. (at Speedway).

Dale L. (Larry) Culbertson
A long time Tucson resident passed quietly away into the arms of the Lord on March 31, 1998. Larry was born September 7, 1913. Surrounded by family, he was raised and nurtured in a small town in South Dakota. Early widowed, his mother remarried Andy Laustrup who was the first of many fortunate events in 'Cubby's' life. Andy imbued the belief 'persistence is the key to achieving goals.' Following two years attending Yankton College, Larry moved to Southern California in 1936 where he met and married Amelia Vacca, his partner and loving wife of 51 years. Amelia's eight brothers and sisters created the family and activity that Larry so enjoyed.
While pursuing dreams in the entertainment world he took a job as Fireman/Engineer with the Southern Pacific Railroad. As an avid union member, he was instrumental in creating better work environments that the craft enjoys even today. In 1960, he moved to Tucson in the managerial position of Road Foreman of Engineers and then in 1969 as General Manager of Engine Service Training, he helped create from concept, simulator training of Locomotive Engineers.
Larry is preceded in death by his wife Amelia (1914-1992). Larry is survived by brother, Charles A. Laustrup, U.S.A.F. Ret. of Colorado; two sons, Stephen L. (Genevieve) and James C. (Rebecca); and four grandchildren, Stephanie, Craig, Tim and Scott, all of Tucson. He will be gravely missed by all those who believe nice guys can finish first. In lieu of flowers please donate to the organization of your choice as Larry supported many local and national charities.
Mass will be offered 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 4, 1998 at Villa Maria Chapel, 4310 E. Grant Road. Burial will be in Our Lady of the Desert Cemetery. Friends may call from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, April 3, 1998 with a Rosary being recited at 7:30 p.m. at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

EIDESHEIM, Elaine M., passed away at her residence on March 31, 1998. Born in Bayonne, NJ, Elaine was a 40 year resident of Arizona. Elaine moved to Tucson in 1958 and met her husband, Harry, who was also from Bayonne. She and Harry lived in Phoenix for 30 years. After returning to Tucson, Elaine became a member of St.Cyril's Catholic Church and was a volunteer at Handmaker Jewish Services Care facility. She is preceded in death by her husband, Harry; mother, Mildred Heinbockle; and father, Frances Edmonds. Elaine is survived by her sister, Linda (Larry) Huegli of Tucson; aunt, Myrtle Emmons; stepbrother, Kenneth Heinbockel; four nephews; one niece; three great-nephews; two great-nieces; and several cousins. Friends may call at the ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd. (at Speedway) on Friday, April 3, 1998 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with Rosary Service at 5:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be offered at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 4, 1998 at St. Cyril's Catholic Church, 4725 E. Pima. Private Interment to take place in National Memorial Cemetery of AZ. Arrangements by family owned ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES.

HOFFMAN, Alvin, 81, of Tucson, passed away March 28, 1998. Survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Pearl; son, Dennis; daughter, Teresa (Kenneth) Dupee; grandchildren, Christopher Ball and Rebecca Ball. Memorial Services will be held at 6:00 p.m. Friday, April 3, 1998 at West Ajo Baptist Church, 5757 W. Ajo Way.
