GILLELAND, Shirley Irene, passed away September 15, 1998. Our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend, Shirley Irene Gilleland, born December twenty third, 1920 in Chicago, Illinois, is at this moment in time, passing beyond, into another moment in time, She will be with Hugh Edward, her husband, and her own special Angel, Wendy, for eternity. As Beverly says…'our love for Shirley goes way beyond the simple word…and into a magical and wonderful place for which there are no words to describe.' She is everything to everybody. She has, only recently, realized what a burden it has been for her, for all of her years. The weight had, only now, begun to become heavy on her, in her eldest of years. A more powerful, generous, energetic and compassionate person would be difficult to find. She is a semanticist, always correcting our grammar. The death of her eldest son, Gilly, was devastating to her and yet, she continued to absorb the pains of the world while continuing to raise a family, keep a house, and hold down the business full time. She is gorgeous to this day. For a short woman, she has the longest legs you have ever seen. She is the toughest woman we have ever known and to have a little of her toughness right now would be wonderful to have, but difficult to achieve. Like Chris said, as were were reminiscing… 'she was always at the head of the conga line.' And she was indeed, with all of us behind her, and happy to be there. We will all miss her, with our individual thoughts and memories, and all of us, for her magic. Shirley's body left us at 8:05 a.m., Tuesday, September 15th, 1998. We, her family and her multitude of friends, will miss her, but will always have her magic in our very souls. Shirley is preceded in death by her eldest son, Hugh Edward Gilleland, III and her husband, Hugh Edward, Jr. Her surviving sister is Lorene Lieske of Glendale, Arizona. Her surviving children are: sons, Michael, Christopher, Kerry and Jesse; and daughter, Suzan; grandchildren, Justina, Hugh Edward IV, Alyssa, Megan and Kayla; daughters-in-law, Laura and Nancy. The family asks that you not send flowers, instead please make donations to her favorite volunteer group, The Red Cross in Sun City, Arizona. The family will receive visitors, gladly, between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. any day, please call first at 722-6895. Arrangements by EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY.
