ELY

Ruby Spaulding Ely

Death Claims Mrs. Elmo Ely

The community was deeply grieved Monday when it was learned that Mrs. Ruby Ely had passed away that morning. It was generally known that for several days Death hovered near, but where life is young and vista of many happy years is unrolled before hope dies hard, and there was hope. There was hope that the virility of youth, combined with an unfaltering spirit might pull even the steepest grade, but it was not to be, so another spirit is added to the heavenly host.

Mrs. Ely had not been well since a girl, having an affliction of the heart. The portals of eternity were ajar for her two years ago, but hers was a brave and courageous conflict and she won, but with health still further impaired. Her last illness was of several weeks' duration and from the first those close to her feared the worst, but lived in hopes. Ruby was 24 years, 6 months and 8 days at her death.

Mrs. Ruby Spaulding Ely was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S.H. Hoy, highly esteemed pioneer residents of Winters. She was born in Winters, schooled in the Winters schools, was known and loved by all. She was married six years ago to Elmo Ely, a scion of the loved and revered Uncle Ben Ely, pioneer settler from Missouri. To them was born one son, Robert Elmo, nearing five years of age, who survives, with her parents, two sisters, Mrs. W.R. Chapman, Mrs. Rita Luft, two brothers, Will and Ben, all of Winters. Her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Stewart, octogenarians, also survive.

Funeral services were held from the home of Mrs. Chapman Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. There was one of the largest turnouts from the countryside of and funeral ever held here, and the floral tributes of loving friends were elegant and innumerable. Ross C. Wilson had charge of the arrangements. Rev. H. H. Wilson of the Christian church spoke words of comfort to the sorrowing and held out the hope of a reunion over there. Song service was rendered Mrs. E.W. Fisher at the piano and Mrs. R.E. Baker, Miss Lulu Wyatt, Mr. F.E. Wilson and Mr. E.W. Fisher. The casket bearers were Everett Sidwell, Henry Johnston, Ted Engelhart, Frank Englehart, Craig Niemann and Lloyd Green.
