HERTZ

Clifford H. Hertz

Clifford H. Hertz died in Albuquerque, N.M. Sunday, April 10, 2005 at age 82.

Mr. Hertz was born Oct. 17, 1922 in Anoka, Neb. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked in sales, banking, real estate and insurance industries for most of his adult life and was employed as an insurance agent for Anderson Agency in Albuquerque, N.M. for more than 15 years. He was a leader for the Boy Scouts of America, a member of the Fraternal Order of Elks, Fiesta Singers and New Mexico Organization of Transplant Recipients.

Survivors include Mr. Hertz's wife of 56 years, Mary Hertz of Albuquerque, N.M.; his daughters, Cathy Hertz Roberts and her husband Cliff of Woodland and Cindy Vaughn and her husband Bob of Cody, Wyo.; his sons, Terry Hertz of Vista; Jim Hertz and his wife Cindy of Denver and Rick Hertz and his wife Victoria of San Diego; his grandchildren, Amelia and Olivia Roberts of Woodland, Jacob Hertz and his wife Karen, Matt Morgan and Joey Covillo all of Denver; Lindsay Hertz of Austin, Texas, Tom Vaughn and Rikki Vaughn both of Cody, Wyo. and his cousins, Bonnie Granger and her husband John, Matt Granger and his wife Gina, Ben, Brian and Rose Granger all of Woodland and Gina George and her family of Long Beach, Wash.

The family requests memorials in Mr. Hertz's name be directed to the charity of the donor's choice.

Services: A celebration of Mr. Hertz's life is scheduled for 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 16 at Chimney Ridge Club House, 6098 Osuna NE, Albuquerque, N.M. Private inurnment at Santa Fe National Cemetery will be held at a later date. Sunrise Funeral Options of Albuquerque is assisting the family with arrangements.

HERNANDEZ

Angelina Arias Hernandez

Angelina Arias Hernandez was chosen to join God and her son, Esteban, in heaven on Tuesday, May 6, 2003. Angelina passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her family. She was born on May 21, 1933 in Douglas, Arizona.

She migrated to Winters in 1962 after living in Guadalupe for a number of years. Although she was a migrant worker, she fought hard to equal access to education for poor migrant families. She was heavily involved with migrant education.

Angelina was known for her spirit of giving and touched many lives. She never turned anyone away. Her door was always open. Cooking, feeding and spending time with others always filled her life with joy. Her loving heart and giving nature will be missed by all who knew her.

Her greatest achievements are her children and grandchildren. They were her pride and joy, and she always bragged about them.

She was devoted to her faith, which sustained and comforted her through her battle with cancer.

She leaves behind eleven children, Louis Javier, Audrey Javier, Vickie Catalan Javier, Connie Ferreira Javier, Victor Hernandez, Humberto Hernandez, Petra Rodriguez Hernandez, Rodolfo Hernandez, Angelina Meza Hernandez, Hortencia Gaines Hernandez and Elidania Wright Hernandez. she also leaves behind 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

We love you, Mom. You will always be in our hearts.

The family wishes to express its gratitude to the Hospice Care team and Guille Cuevas for their help with her care.

The family requests that donations be made to Yolo Hospice.

MICHAUX

Dorothy Donaldson McAlister Michaux

Dorothy Donaldson McAlister Michaux died Jan. 4, 2005, following a long battle with cancer. She was 78.

A memorial service will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, at United Methodist Church of Davis, 1620 Anderson Road. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.

Born June 28, 1926, in Ely, Nev., to Dora and Peter McAlister, she arrived in California with her family in a Model T Ford on her first birthday. She attended grade school in Portola.

After graduating from Stockton High School and Stockton Junior College, she studied for a year at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, with an emphasis on kindergarten/primary education. She later taught kindergarten in Richmond.

On her return to the United States, she continued her study of early childhood education. She graduated from San Jose State College. It was there that she met her future husband, Bernard Michaux. Fifty-four years ago they were married in Morris Chapel at the College of the Pacific in her hometown of Stockton. Their marriage was described as one of unusual love and loyalty.

Her family said she was devoted to children. Her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews all had a great fondness for her. She was known for her joy of finding a bargain, regularly gathering collectibles from garage sales and thrift shops. She also enjoyed visiting with acquaintances while dining with her husband at Cindy's Restaurant in Davis.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Bernard Michaux; their three children, Joan Chandler and her husband John of Davis; Jean Bloomquist and her husband Mark of San Carlos; and Bruce Michaux and his wife Cindy UpdeGrave of Seattle, Wash.; and her siblings, Mary Stark of Auburn, and Scott McAlister of Concord.

She is further survived by eight grandchildren, Laura, Lisa, Christina and Jason Chandler; John, David, and Angela Bloomquist; and Mielle Michaux.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, CA 95616.

Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.

MICHEL

Jose G. Michel

Services held for Jose G. Michel

A graveside service was held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Woodland yesterday (Dec. 6, 1989) for Jose Guadalupe Michel, who died Sunday, Dec. 3, in a hospital in Woodland. A native of Mexico, he was 61.

A rosary was recited at McNary’s Chapel in Woodland on the evening of Dec. 5.

Mr. Michel is survived by sons, George Michel, Jess Michel and Joemanuel Michel, all of Woodland, and Arthur Michel of Los Angeles; one daughter, Rosemary Calderon of Sacramento; brothers, Joaquin Michel and Miguel Michel, both of Winters, and Lino Michel and Antonio Michele, both of Mexico; three sisters, Nate Garcia of Winters, and Rachel Michel and Perta Michel, both of Mexico; and 11 grandchildren.

MIDDLETON

Lura S. Middleton

Lura Skinner Middleton died on Dec. 2, 1999, in San Leandro. Born on Aug. 11, 1914, in Council, Idaho, to Clyde and Cora Skinner, she was 85.

She graduated from the University of Colorado in 1935 and did graduate work at San Francisco State University. She worked as an editor for the University of Colorado, for the Western State Commission for Higher Education and as a business officer for the Cardiovascular Research Institute at UC San Francisco.

For 15 years she was a continuing education specialist for UC Davis Extension, retiring in 1984.

She was married to Marion Elliott, who died in 1953. In 1965, she married Norman Middleton, who died in 1994.

She was active in the University Farm Circle and was a charter member of the Design Alliance, support group for the UC Davis design department. She worked as a volunteer for Yolo Hospice at the Davis Community Clinic.

She is survived by two sons and their families, Kent and Arline Elliott and Larry Elliott, both of Las Vegas, Nev.; two granddaughters, Christi Elliot of Laguna Beach and Suzanne Elliott, a student at UC Davis; two brothers, Maynard Skinner of Davis and his family and Durland Skinner of San Leandro and his family; and numerous first cousins.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of Davis, 1620 Anderson Road. Family and friends will gather following the service at the home of Maynard Skinner and Cristy Jensen, 222 University Ave. in Davis.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers made be made to the Design Alliance at UC Davis, in care of Maynard Skinner, 222 University Ave., Davis, CA, 95616.

MIGUEL

Santiago V. Miguel

Santiago V. Miguel died in Alderson Convalescent Hospital, Woodland Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at age 91.

Born Dec. 25, 1910, in the Philippines, Mr. Miguel was the son of the late Anesento and Margareta Miguel. He had been a Yolo County resident for the past five years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1946. He served in the European African Middle Eastern Theater earning the campaign medal of the same name as well as the American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was a bartender for 45 years. He was last employed by the City of Paris in San Francisco. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Miguel is survived by his sister, Victoria Miguel-Lucas of the Philippines; nieces, Jacinta Barena and husband Larry of Carson, Lynn Miguel-Mullen and husband Tom and Ann Miguel-Joule and husband Frank, all of Woodland; nephews, Santi Miguel and wife Verline of Esparto, Leon Miguel and wife Jane of Woodland; cousin, Andrea Miguel Amor and husband Dominador of New Orleans; stepson, Samuel Pasion and wife Esther of San Jose; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Felicidad (Mangaoil) Miguel in 1990; cousin, Leon Miguel in 1981; and stepson, Theodore Pasion in 2001.

The vigil service is scheduled at 7 p.m. today, Friday, Feb. 8, at McNary's Chapel, 458 College St., Woodland.

A funeral mass is scheduled to be said at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 9, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Woodland, with interment to follow at Monument Hill Memorial Park, Woodland.

McNary's Chapel of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.

MILLER

Doris Katherine "Mom" Miller (1st of 2 obituaries)

Mrs. Doris Katherine "Mom" Miller passed away peacefully at her Woodland home surrounded by her loving family, Friday, March 18, 2005. "Mom" was born in Birmingham, Ala. Oct. 19, 1922 to Robert and Helen W. (Wynn) Mason. Mrs. Miller was a Yolo County resident for the last 60 years.

Raised in Birmingham, Ala., Doris attended Miles College, graduating with a BS degree and taught elementary school for two years. She was the homecoming queen at Miles College for three years. She met Victor W. Miller while he was in the military and moved to California in 1945, where she devoted her time to being a housewife and raising her four children. Doris worked for E.O.P. for the county, generously helping many needy families and worked in home health care for several years, later becoming a child care provider. When Doris retired from working she never lost her title as "Mom" Miller or "Grandma" to many. Through the years, many did not know her real name was Doris, but she was "Mom" or "Grandma" to all. While retired, she enjoyed the company of her family and friends, which always managed to find their way back to her throughout the years. Her love of all of her children and grandchildren is what kept her young in spirit and heart. With all of her wisdom and advice, she always offered a prayer and was willing to help anyone. So ... as Mom would say, "that's cool."

Surviving Mrs. Miller are her children, David R. Miller and fiance Debbie of Woodland, Stephen W. Miller and wife Lori of Susanville, Denyse Y. "Sissy" Miller-Mamou and husband Don Mamou and Cynthia H. Miller, all of Woodland. Grandchildren include Margot G. Birch and husband Dr. John Birch of Granite Bay, Brett and Zachary Miller of Woodland, Sanita Coutee-Washington and husband Staff Sergeant Douglas of Tinker Air Force Base, Okla., Dennis E. Coutee and partner Tiara Sells, Timothy D. Coutee and partner Stephanie Morales, Stephen Miller II and fiancee Vanessa, all of Woodland and Alexander Miller and Catherine Miller of Susanville. Great-grandchildren Jordan and Baylee Miller of Woodland, Michael, Ethan, Gabriela and Sofia Birch of Granite Bay, Tayzyah Washington and Karisa Washington of Oklahoma, Jaiden, Jocelyn and Destin Coutee and Stephen Miller III all of Woodland, and former daughter-in-law Arloa Miller of Rocklin. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended adopted family also survive Mrs. Miller. She was preceded in death by her parents, granddaughter Karisa Coutee and great-grandson D'Kaiah Coutee.

No visitation scheduled. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 24 at the American Legion Yolo Post No. 77, located at 523 Bush St., Woodland. A special memorial in celebration of Mrs. Miller's life will be dedicated in her name with a big farewell party with her favorite nephew's live band, Nathan Owens and the Sounds of Motown, at Cache Creek Casino in Club 88 on April 9 at 9 p.m. The family requests donations in Mrs. Miller's memory be made to the American Heart Association, 1710 Gilbreth Road, Burlingame, 94010.

Doris Katherine 'Mom' Miller (2nd of 2 obits.)

Doris Katherine "Mom" Miller died at her Woodland home Friday, March 18, 2005 at age 82.
