PHILLIPS

James D. Phillips, Sr.

James D. Phillips Sr., age 64, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly while recovering from a recent open heart surgery.

He was born on Aug. 18, 1941 in Wynne, Ark. To Mitchell H. and Florence O. (Gaither) Phillips.

He married V. Rita Sanders on March 5, 1960 in Reno, Nev.

At a very young age, James’ family moved to Winters where he was raised and graduated from Winters High School.

He served his country in the United States Army during Vietnam.

Throughout his life he loved tinkering with trucks and any small mechanical item.

He worked as a parts manager for Ochoa Brothers of Woodland.

He was a very loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow and was particularly interested in watching their various sports activities, he was proud of his grandchildren and their accomplishments.

James was the type of individual that would do anything to help anyone, he was always very considerate of others.

He is survived by his wife, Rita Phillips of Woodland; children, Bonnie Sunderland (Robert) of Woodland; Sherry Trapp (Stephen) of Chicago; Frank Phillips of Woodland; William Troy Phillips of Reno, Nev. and James Phillips Jr. of Rapid City, S.D.; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Donald B. Phillips.

A viewing was held on Dec. 15 at Wiscombe’s Davis Funeral Chapel.

A private interment took place in the Winters cemetery.

PHILLIPS

Melvin 'Smitty' Lee Phillips

Melvin "Smitty" Lee Phillips died at Woodland Memorial Hospital Monday, Sept. 13 at age 69.

Mr. Phillips was born Feb. 6, 1935 in Rifle, Colo. to Doris Phillips and had been a resident of Yolo County for 35 years. He was a member of the Teamsters Local No. 150, and had been a truck driver for more than 37 years.

Survivors include Mr. Phillips' wife, Bonnie L. Phillips of Woodland, daughters, Teresa Gluesing of Sacramento, Anita White and her husband Darrel of Willows and Debbie Casey of Chico, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The family requests memorials in Mr. Phillips' name be directed to the Diabetes Association Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 2680, N. Canton, Ohio 44720.

Services: Visitation is scheduled for 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18 at Kraft Bros. Chapel, 175 Second St., Woodland. A funeral will be conducted at the same time. Private interment will be conducted at a later date. Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.

PHIPPS

Mart Phipps

Mart Phipps of Orange died Sunday, Nov. 6 at age 84.

Mr. Phipps was born July 20, 1921 in Rush Springs, Okla. He had been a Yolo County resident for 64 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was the owner of Nielson's Nursery in Woodland.

Survivors include Mr. Phipps' wife of 50 years, Louise Phipps of Orange; his daughters, Mary Phipps, Diane Messenger and her husband Scott and Alexandra Mason, all of Orange County; his son, James Phipps and his wife Lori of Woodland; his grandchildren, Mark and Morgan Messenger of Orange County and Teresa and Vanessa Cordero of Woodland; and his sisters, Ora Blevens of Sacramento and Opal Dimmick of Kerman.

The family requests memorials in Mrs. Phipps' name be directed to the charity of the donor's choice.

Services: A funeral was held Nov. 11 in Santa Ana. The Fairhaven Memorial Park and Mortuary of Santa Ana assisted the family with arrangements.

PHIPPS-TOLLIVER-HACKETT

Iona Phipps-Tolliver-Hackett

Iona Phipps-Tolliver-Hackett died at Woodland Memorial Hospital on Monday, July 12, 2004, at age 80.

Born Jan. 25, 1924 in Kingsburg, Mrs. Hackett came from a family of migrant farm workers. She attended Esparto High School for two years and resided in Yolo County for 66 years.

Survivors include her six daughters, Louana Tolliver-Harden and her husband Nick of Guinda, Charlotte Tolliver-Lopes of Yuba City, Colleen Tolliver-Henson of Sacramento, Carmen Hackett-Davis of Aurora, Colo., Paula Hackett-Palmer and Marva Hackett-Bailey both of Sacramento; her identical twin sister Leona Phipps-Sanders and husband John; her brother Eldon Phipps and wife Betty; 22 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; son-in-law David Lopes; grandson Kenneth Scott and granddaughter Saycha Davis.

Services: Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Mrs. Hackett's life at 10 a.m., Friday, July 16, at the Esparto Community Center/Scout Cabin, Highway 16. Private interment at Capay Cemetery will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made in Mrs. Hackett's honor to the Yolo Federal Credit Union, account No. 164300, for the Esparto High School Scholarship Program. Arrangements are under the direction of Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors of Woodland.

PIAZZA

Eva Louise Piazza

Eva Louise Piazza of Woodland died Thursday, March 23 at age 73.

Mrs. Piazza was born Nov. 19, 1932 in Victorville. She had been a Yolo County resident for 43 years. She graduated from Paso Robles High School. For 10 years she worked as a bank teller and for 32 years, she was a restaurant owner. In addition, she was a member of the Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include Mrs. Piazza's daughters, Cheryl Smith and Jackie Richardson and her husband Anthony, all of Woodland; her sons, Charles Piazza and his wife Krista of Woodland, Michael Millard and his wife Mary of San Bernardino and James Piazza and his wife Linda of Dublin; her grandchildren, Rachael, Joseph, Melissa, Amanda, Breanna, Danny, Tyler, Tylor and Mia; and her brother Gene Bowlin of Yucca Valley. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Piazza and her parents, Edward and Wilma Bowlin.

The family requests memorials in Mrs. Piazza's name be directed to Vitas Hospice, 3841 N. Freeway Blvd., No. 210, Sacramento, 95834.

Services: A funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, March 27 at McNary's Chapel, 458 College St., Woodland. Chaplain Christine Phobanz of Vitas Hospice will officiate. Interment will be at Monument Hill Memorial Park. McNary's Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.

PIRES

Belmira (Pimentel) Pires

Belmira Pimentel Pires of Woodland died at Alderson Convalescent Hospital Tuesday, Jan. 3 at age 95.

Mrs. Pires was born May 18, 1910 in Oakland, CA to Joseph S. Pimentel and Angela Mello Pimentel.

At an early age her father and mother moved to Yolo County where he had obtained work on a dairy. She attended and graduated from Willow Oak School. She married Felix B. Pires on July 24, 1926 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Woodland. In 1951 they were able to buy 20 acres in Esparto with a small house and barn and were able to fulfill their dream of having their own dairy.

Survivors include her son, Larry Pires and his wife Beverly of Woodland. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Bruce Pires and his wife Brenda of Atascadero, Missie Hobson and her husband Larry of Avila Beach, Stephanie Price and her husband Tom, Louis Pires Jr. and his wife Ting of Woodland. Also surviving are great-grandchildren, Kelsey Freshours and her husband Joseph of Dixon, Lacey Pacheco and her husband Jeff of San Diego, Matthew Hobson of Avila Beach, Jordan Price, Amaya and Arianna Pires of Woodland; great-great-grandson, Austin Freshours of Dixon; her sisters, Mary Borba, Evelyn Rhodes Schreiber and Isabel Bettencourt and her husband Frank, all of Woodland; and her brother, Clay Pimentel and his wife Barbara of Fremont; nieces, Rita Carlson and husband Michael of Carson City, Nev., Cynthia Bettencourt of Sacramento, Deolinda M. Duncan of Woodland, Lucille Peters and husband Manuel of Elk Grove, Ida Ortiz and husband Leonard of Galt; nephews, Denny Rhodes and wife Genie of Dillon Beach, Manuel Borba of Oakland, Todd and Craig Pimentel of Fremont, Frank Bettencourt and wife Isabel of Woodland, Manuel Bettencourt and wife Neyda of Portland, Ore. She was preceded in death by her husband, Felix B. Pires Sr.; her parents; her sons, Felix Pires Jr. of Woodland and Louis Pires Sr. of Esparto.

Services: Friends are invited to attend the vigil service scheduled at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9, 2006 at Holy Rosary Church, (Court and Walnut streets), Woodland and are also invited to attend the funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10 also at Holy Rosary Church. Interment to follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery.

PHLEGER

Naum Jeffrey (Freeman) Phleger

Naum Jeffrey (Freeman) Phleger died on Jan. 19, 2005, at UC Davis. He was 26.

Friends are invited to a memorial at 3 p.m. Thursday at the UC Davis Genome Center auditorium. A reception follows at Delta of Venus restaurant, 122 B St. in downtown Davis.

Born Feb. 5, 1978, in San Francisco, he attended elementary and high school in San Francisco, where he graduated in June 1996. He began his college career at UC Santa Barbara that same year. He developed a passion for physics, graduating with a bachelor's degree in physics from UC Santa Barbara in June 2001.

He began graduate studies at UC Davis in September 2001, where he remained until his death. He worked as a teaching assistant and later as a research assistant in both physics and biochemistry.

His family says he was excited about the research he had recently been involved in as well as his participation in publication of his work in scientific journals.

He was a gourmet cook and enjoyed hosting dinner parties. Over the years, he hosted more than 350 gourmet dinner parties for friends and family. His family says he had a vibrant personality and actively sought to share his joy and enthusiasm with others.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Patricia and Michael Phleger of San Francisco; his father and stepmother, Kyle and Shelley Freeman of Santa Maria; his sisters, Auda Phleger of Davis and Julia Freeman of Napa; and a brother, Brendon Freeman of Davis.

He is further survived by his grandparents, Dr. Forest and Georgia Gee of Davis, and Robert and Elizabeth Freeman of Napa; his uncles, Donald Gee of Arizona; Terry Freeman of Si Sa Ket, Thailand, and David Freeman of Susanville; and his aunts, Marilyn Schiffman of Davis and Barbara Riley of Templeton.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Naum J. Phleger Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 2643, Orcutt, CA 93457.
