RAMIREZ

Rudolph Ramirez

Rudolph Ramirez died in his Winters homes Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, at age 78, surrounded by his family.

Born Nov. 3, 1923, in Ontario, Mr. Ramirez was the son of Refugio and Josefina (Lopez) Ramirez who had immigrated to California from Mexico. He had been a resident of Yolo County since 1938 and had worked at Contadina Foods as a foreman for 29 years before his retirement. Previously, while a resident of Knights Landing, Mr. Ramirez had joined the United States Army at Camp Beale, Marysville, in February of 1943. He was assigned to an infantry battalion and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater in Hawaii and the Philippines, returning to the United States in January 1946 as a decorated Technical Sergeant having earned the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the Philippine Occupation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and Sharpshooter, Marksman, and Expert Riflery Medals. While in the Infantry, Rudolph was assigned with the 762nd Tank Battalion. Military honors will be conducted at the interment service of Mr. Ramirez.

According to his family members, "he loved his extended family, the children he raised and helped complete their education, his grandchildren who always looked to him for guidance and support, and the farmlands of Yolo County. His hobbies included fishing, all sports and taking his grandchildren to their school games and dancing." He was a member of the Guadalupe Societe of Yolo County.

Mr. Ramirez is survived by his wife of 39 years, Concepcion Ramirez; and his sons, Rodolfo "J.R." Ramirez and wife Ethel of Gosnell, Ark., and Frank Nieto and wife Lori Moore of Sacramento; his daughters, Olga Ramirez of Winters, Delores Castro and husband Francisco of Winters, Luz N. Rodriguez and husband Lorenzo of Winters, Letty Nieto of Sacramento, and Margaret Finley-Nieto of Denver, Colo.; brothers, Tony and Raul Ramirez of Sacramento, Ernesto and Refugio Ramirez of Woodland, Charlie and Fernando Ramirez of San Jose, and Mike Ramirez of San Diego; sisters, Elvira Medina of Woodland, Amada Valenzuela of Sacramento and Irene Phason of Yolo; 21 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, a granddaughter, Krystal Ramirez predeceased Mr. Ramirez in 2000, in Solano County.

Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m., today, Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Kraft Bros. Chapel, 175 Second St., Woodland, with a rosary to be recited beginning at 7 p.m.

Friends and family are invited to attend. A mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 301 Walnut St., Woodland, with Fr. John Boll officiating. Interment will immediately follow the mass at St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Donations in his memory may be made to Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, 95617; Cancer Society of Northern California; or a charity of donor's choice.

WOOD

Marie P. Wood

Marie P. Wood died Sept. 30, 2000, in Lower Lake. Born Jan. 31, 1922, in Berkeley, she was 78 years old.

She was raised in Berkeley and graduated from Berkeley High School in 1939. She moved to Davis in 1964, where she and her late husband were very active at the Davis Senior Center. She ran the Friday Night Bingo at the Senior Center for many years and was involved with the Travelaires. Her late husband was the president of the Senior Center.

She enjoyed bridge and golf and loved crafts of every kind, including ceramics, needlepoint and pottery. After her husband's retirement, they traveled the United States, visiting all but two states. In 1996, as her health failed, she moved to Santa Rosa to be near her nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Lester Edward Wood, in February 1989. She is survived by her nephews, Leslie Shank of Santa Rosa and Everet I. Shank of Santa Rosa.

Friends may call today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D St., and are invited to attend the funeral Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Chapel. Entombment will follow at Sunset Mausoleum in El Cerrito.

Remembrances may be made in her name to the Davis Senior Center.

WOODEN

Wesley R. “Wes” Wooden

Wesley R. “Wes” Wooden died at Courtyard Healthcare in Davis on Friday, Nov. 11, 2005, surrounded by his family. He was 93.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Wiscombe’s – Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D Street in Davis with a Celebration of Life to follow at Cafe California, 808 Second Street, Davis.

He was born at Elk River in Humboldt County to Ralph and Alina Wooden on Oct. 17, 1912. He attended UC Berkeley and studied Agricultural Engineering. He played football as a freshman, but injuries and health concerns forced him to drop out.

He returned to Berkeley, but drawn to animal science courses, he transferred to UC Davis and graduated in 1940 with a B.S. in agricultural economics.

While attending UC Davis, Wooden met fellow student Katherine while the two were observing a newborn border collie puppy at the campus sheep barn. They were engaged on May 1, 1940, and married later that year. In 1948, the couple moved to Davis permanently.

The Woodens were long-time Corriedale sheep breeders. In 1949, they won All American Ram and All American Ewe and the All American show in San Angelo, Texas. In 1957 at Harrisburg, Pa., Wooden won the Guthrie Award for Outstanding Corriedale Breeder of the Year.

He was a regional wool buyer and livestock judge at the California State Fair, the Junior Grand National in San Francisco, the International Show in Chicago, numerous state and county fairs and, on several occasions, the UCD Little I.

He was a member of various livestock and business groups, including Agricultural Chairman for the Davis Chamber of Commerce. He served as president of the Solano County Wool Growers Association, California Purebred Exhibitors, Purple Circle, California Sheep Dog Society and American Corriedale Association.

As a former Eagle Scout, he was especially involved in youth activities. He was a leader at pack, troop and post levels for Davis Boy Scout Troop III. He also served on the Board of Trustees for the Davis Community Church. He was a sheep leader for West Plainfield 4-H.

He often extended a helping hand to civic groups. He was a volunteer for the West Plainfield Fire Department and served on the Davis Citizens Committee for Public Schools, the Historical Landmarks Commission and the Senior Commission.

As a Realtor, he specialized in the sale of country properties. During his twenty year career, he served as President of Yolo County Board of Realtors in 1974 and in 1975 was named Realtor of the Year.

In his later years, Wooden was chairman of the Davis Senior Center Fund Drive for Phase II. For these efforts, in 1985 he was honored twice, as Senior Citizen of the Year and as the recipient of the Brinley Award for Special Merit.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, son Wayne S. Wooden of Palm Springs, daughter Marilyn Shepherd of Trinidad and daughter Joan A. Wooden of Davis.

Interment will be private at the Davis Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

RAMMING

Alfred J. Ramming (1st of 2 obituaries)

Alfred J. Ramming passed away peacefully in his rural Yolo County home, near Woodland, on Friday, July 16, 2004 after a brief illness. He was 89 years old and was a 20-year resident of Yolo County.

Born in Hinton, Oklahoma to the late Fred and Hulda Ramming, he moved to Lompoc, Calif. in the 1940s and married his wife, the late Jessie DeBolt, in 1951. They made their home in Lompoc, where they raised their three children. Alfred worked as an automobile mechanic and helped Jessie operate a private elementary school in their home.

After his wife passed way in 1982, Alfred moved to Yolo County in 1984 to be near his children, helping them in their business and agricultural ventures.

Alfred was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his three brothers (Elmer, Clarence and Paul); and a sister, Viola Cunningham. He is survived by: son John Ramming, wife Kathi and step-grandsons Michael, Brian and TJ; former daughter-in-law Bonnie Ramming, all of Woodland, and grandson Mark Ramming and great-granddaughter Jocelyn Ramming, both of Las Vegas, Nev., and grandson Brian Ramming; son Robert, wife Debbie and grandchildren, Adam, April, Julie and Karen Ramming; and daughter Carol Ramming, also all of Woodland. He is also survived by his sister Velma Radcliff of Mercer Island, Wash. and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and their children.

A private graveside service was held at the Woodland Cemetery. In keeping with Alfred's wishes, no memorial service is scheduled.

Alfred J. Ramming (2nd of 2 obituaries)

Alfred J. Ramming died in his rural Yolo County home, near Woodland, Friday, July 16, 2004, at age 89.

Born Oct. 6, 1914, in Hinton, Okla., to the late Fred and Hulda Ramming, he had been a Yolo County resident for 20 years. He was employed as an automobile mechanic and assisted his wife in the operation of a private elementary school in their home. He later assisted his children in their business and agricultural pursuits.

Survivors include daughter, Carol Ramming; sons, John Ramming and wife Kathi, and Robert Ramming and wife Debbie; former daughter-in-law, Bonnie Ramming; granddaughters, April, Julie and Karen Ramming, all of Woodland; grandsons, Mark Ramming of Las Vegas, Nev., and Brian and Adam Ramming of Woodland; stepgrandsons, Michael, Brian and TJ, also of Woodland; and great-granddaughter, Jocelyn Ramming, also of Las Vegas, Nev. Also surviving is his sister, Velma Radcliff of Mercer Island, Wash.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and their families. He was preceded in death by his wife of 31 years, Jessie (DeBolt) Ramming, in 1982; sister, Viola Cunningham; and brothers, Elmer, Clarence and Paul Ramming.

Services: A private graveside service was conducted in Woodland Cemetery. Respecting the wishes of Mr. Ramming, no memorial service is scheduled. McNary's Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.

MARTINEZ

Phil Martinez

Phil Martinez died in Woodland Skilled Nursing Facility Monday, March 3, 2003, at age 70.

Born July 21, 1932, in Dixon, N.M., Mr. Martinez had been a laborer in agriculture for 40 years. He had been a Yolo County resident for one and a half years.

Survivors include his brother, Eli Martinez of Elko, Nev.; and sister, Alcarita Greer of Algodones, N.M.

Arrangements are under the direction of North Sacramento Funeral Home.

Services: Cremains will be returned to his family.

MILLER

Martin Wesley Miller

Martin Wesley Miller, professor emeritus of the food science and technology department at UC Davis, died after a short illness on April 23, 2005, in Sacramento. He was 80.

A graveside service will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Davis Cemetery. A reception will follow at Sudwerk, 2001 Second St. in Davis.

Born Jan. 8, 1925, in Belden, Neb., to Emma B. and Dr. Earl E. Miller, his early years were spent in Scotia and Culbertson, Neb. His mother died when he was 7 years old, and his father, the town doctor, died in 1939. He and his younger brother Stephen lived in foster homes until his graduation from high school.

He tried to enlist in the armed services when Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941, but was refused because he was underage. On the night he graduated from Culbertson High School in May 1942, he turned down a scholarship to the University of Nebraska and took a job overseeing a rail shipment of cattle to California where he joined his half-sister, Mae.

He worked various jobs until he found a recruiter who looked the other way and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served as a radioman first class stationed in Honolulu, until his discharge in 1946.

During his service, he met and fell in love with Patricia Meyer of Oakland. They were married July 11, 1948, in Berkeley, where they were both students. He studied bacteriology while at UC Berkeley and received his bachelor's degree in June 1950.

On Jan. 16, 1952, their first child, Stephen, was born. After receiving his master's degree in food science in June 1952, Martin and Patricia moved to West Sacramento so he could continue working on his doctorate, working closely with Emil Mrak in the department of food science and technology at UC Davis. Son Craig was born in 1954 and daughter Susan in 1956.

He received his doctorate degree in microbiology in 1958 and the family moved to Davis, where he resided until his death.

He was an internationally recognized expert in food science. He had two books and numerous scientific articles published in the fields of food dehydration, food microbiology, fermentation, food spoilage by yeasts and molds, yeast taxonomy and ecology.

He was a researcher and consultant to the dried fruit and olive industries, as well as in international program activities in food science in Brazil, Saudia Arabia and Egypt. In 1964 he received a Fulbright Senior Research Award to Australia and the National Science Foundation Japan Society Science Award from 1967 to 1969. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and the Institute of Food Technologists.

He was said to have loved working with the students and was a popular lecturer. He also served as master student adviser for the food science undergraduate major for many years, mentoring students from countries all over the world.

He retired from the university in 1988, although he was recalled for several years to teach upper division and graduate bacteriology and mycology courses for which he was uniquely qualified. He remained in touch with many of his former students until his death.

His family said he loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and camper. Early in their marriage, he and Patricia often backpacked in Yosemite and climbed Half Dome. He also enjoyed playing cribbage and got involved with genealogy, tirelessly researching his own family's history and Patricia's as well.

He will be remembered for many things, including his pipe, his whistle, his cheerfulness and his sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by his half-sister, Mae, who died in 1971; and his son, Craig, who died in 1993.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Patricia Miller; his son, Stephen Miller; his daughter, Susan Hoffmann and her husband Jeff; and his grandchildren, Melissa Miller, Heather Hoffmann, Stephanie Hoffmann and Jason Hoffmann.

He is further survived by his brother, Stephen and his wife Arleen; and many nieces and nephews.

The family requests that remembrances be made to the Friends of Davis Arboretum or to a charity of the donor's choice.

RADULOVICH

Mitchel John Radulovich

Mitchel John Radulovich passed away on Nov. 23, 2004, in Red Bluff. Born on March 24, 1923, in Willow Glenn, he was 81 years old. Mr. Radulovich was a resident of Corning for the last 13 years.

He served for 55 years as a mechanic. He was known for being a very hardworking man. He last worked for the Hunt-Wesson cannery, where he was well-liked by his coworkers and made friends. He and his loving wife, Wilma, are the owners and operators of the Orchard Ranch in Winters.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma, of Corning; daughter, Loreta Demele, of Gardnerville, Nevada; sons Mitchel Robert Radulovich, of Winters, and Leo J. Radulovich, of Corning; brother, Peter Radulovich, of Dixon; four grandsons, four granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Nick Radulovich, and his sister, Lena Cornwell.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, Dec. 2, at 1 p.m. at the Silveyville Cemetery, in Dixon. Officiating the service will be Father Joseph Huong of St. Peter's Catholic Church, in Dixon.

The Hall Brothers Corning Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.

RAH

Carmen Oliver Rah

Carmen Oliver Rah died unexpectedly at Woodland Memorial Hospital Friday, August 2, 2002, at age 80.

Born Jan. 17, 1922, in Sigourney Iowa, Mr. Rah, had been a resident of Yolo County for the last 25 years.

He served in the United States Army, with the 211st Army Air Force Bas Unit, Sioux Falls, S. D. Shortly after completing training he served in the Balkans, the campaigns in both Northern and Southern France, including the battle of Po Valley, the Rhineland and Rome, Italy. He was awarded the European Expeditionary medal, the Army Combat Medal with Gold Okla. Cluster, the Good Conduct Medal, Marksman and Sharpshooter Medals, and the 485th Bob Group Outstanding Unit Award. He returned to the Untied States on May 1945 and was discharged from active duty as a sergeant, leaving the service in October.

He met and married Charlene (Kaiser) Rah, in Denver Colo., where he worked for Miller's Markets and then spent the next 24 years as a supervisor at Alexander' Markets in Southern California.

After retiring, Mr. Rah enjoyed reading, especially Zane Grey novels, as well as studying about the Old West and the Civil War.

According to family members, he loved his garden and enjoyed cooking as a hobby, and spent any spare time doing crossword puzzles. He also enjoyed sports, especially fishing, prior to retiring.

Mr. Rah is survived by wife Charlene Rah; daughter Cheryl Rah Lock and husband Steven; son Craig O. Rah, all of Woodland; sisters Elva Peck and husband Elliott of Concord, Mary Ferrero, of Sacramento, and Virginia Berger of Newhall.

He was preceded in death by brother Clarence Rah and sister Edna Rah.

Visitation is scheduled from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at Kraft Bros. Funeral Chapel, 175 Second Street, Woodland. A graveside service is scheduled at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at Monument Hill memorial Park, with military honors presented by the United States Army Guard.

Family requests memorials be directed to the charity of the donor's choice.
