SAUNDERS

Preston K. Saunders

Preston Saunders died Oct. 5, 2005, in Petaluma. A Davis resident for 22 years, she was 86.

She will be remembered for her generous devotion to her small family and her large circle of friends. Her love of poetry, art, music, books and cooking inspired family and friends to enjoy every detail to the fullest.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry F. Saunders.

She is survived by her son, Brad Saunders and his wife Karen, and granddaughter Katie Saunders, all of Petaluma.

HERNANDEZ

Joel Hernandez

Joel Hernandez died at his home in Woodland Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006 at age 62.

Mr. Hernandez was born April 4, 1943 in Durango, Mexico. He had been a Yolo County resident for 20 years. He served 21 years in the U.S. Air Force in communication and special forces and had a master's degree in psychology.

Survivors include Mr. Hernandez's wife of 18 years, Mary Hernandez of Woodland; his daughter, Rhonda Kormanian of Hartford, Conn.; his son, Craig Hernandez of Lander, Wyo.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his sisters, Lucila Hernandez of Woodland, Josefine Velez of Santa Barbara, Imelda Villalpando and Delia Nevarez both of Davis, Zenaida Razo of Pismo Beach; and his brother, Jess A. Hernandez of Davis. He was preceded in death by his parents, Isabel and Pastor Hernandez.

The family requests memorials in Mr. Hernandez's name be directed to The American Cancer Society, 1765 Challenge Way, Suite 115, Sacramento, 95815.

Services: A graveside service is scheduled for noon, Wednesday, Jan. 18 at the Davis Cemetery. Clergy from St. James Catholic Church will officiate. McNary's Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.

VAWTER

Peggy Sue Hutchison Vawter

Peggy Sue Vawter, age 65, died at her home in Woodland on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, following a lengthy and courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

She was born on June 18, 1938, in Kennett, Missouri, to the late L. B. and Bertha Pruett Hutchison. A homemaker and 53-year resident of Yolo County, she attended both Winters and Woodland high schools and was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church of Woodland. Peggy believed "What we weave in time, We must wear in eternity." She was a beautiful person with a kind, gentle nature and loving sprit and will always be remembered as a good mother who loved her sons more than life itself.

Peggy is survived by her sons, Matt Scoggins and wife Vicky of Woodland, Glenn P. Scoggins of Rocklin, Craig Scoggins and wife Yvonne, Drue Vawter and fiancee Shawnda Herrera; sister Marjorie Daley and husband Mark, all of Woodland; brothers Hutch Hutchison and wife Mae of Carmichael, Frank Hutchison and wife Dorothy of Dunnigan, and Paul Hutchison and wife Edna of Woodland. Twelve grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews further survive her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald L. Vawter; brothers Guy and William Hutchison.

McNary's Chapel of Woodland is assisting the family with cremation arrangements. A private memorial will be held at a later date.

VEATCH

Cody Loren Veatch

Cody Loren Veatch, passed away Nov. 22, 2005. Born June 28, 1916 in Otero County, Colo. Cody's family moved to Arizona where he lived for 8 years. At the age of 9, Cody's grandfather died, being the eldest of 9 grandchildren he was sent to live and work on his grandparents farm in Rocky Ford, Colo. Cody was a hard working young man. He worked on the farm and earned a living working the watermelon fields in the spring and summer months.

Cody was raised with the Midwest saying of "we'll make do." As Cody entered into manhood, he made a living in welding, plumbing and mechanical work. He had a love of steam trains, which carried into his adult hobby of Lionel Train collecting.

On June 10, 1944, he married the love of his life Reba Mildred Vaughn. Cody and Reba traveled to the Comstock Silver Mines where he was a foreman/welder for a number of years. Cody and Reba loved life to the fullest, dancing their way through dance halls. Cody and Reba never had any children but had many animals which they treated like children. Their love of animals was apparent to everyone who knew them as they adopted many stray dogs/cats that needed help.

Cody and Reba moved to Woodland where they lived for over 30 years. Cody was employed by the Kimzey Welding Company for 30 years. Cody and Reba moved to Yreka for 10 years where Cody worked at odd jobs and growing flowers for Reba. When Reba grew ill Cody and Reba moved back to Woodland where they resided with their beloved dog Corky.

Cody is survived by his wife Reba and friend/granddaughter Sandi Reyes of Woodland. Friends are welcome at the memorial service for Cody on Dec. 8, 2005 at 4 p.m. in the Chapel of St. John's Retirement Village, 135 Woodland Ave., Woodland. Memorials may be made to the Veatch Memorial Fund at the Yolo County Animal Services in Woodland. Services provided by W.F. Gormley & Sons of Sacramento.

HERRERA

Tito “Pops” Herrera

Tito “Pops” Herrera of Davis died Jan. 22, 2006. Born Feb. 6, 1939, in Taos, N.M., he was 66 years old.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial Mass at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. James Catholic Church, 1275 B St. in Davis. A potluck lunch will follow.

He will be buried icon Monday in Davis, alongside his brother and nephew.

He worked many years for Nishi Farms before retiring in 1986. He loved the outdoors, trout fishing, hunting and camping. He also had a great sense of humor, his family says. Fundamental to his nature, he was always telling jokes and making people laugh.

“Pops, we will miss your little chuckle and smile, ” his family says.

He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and one nephew.

He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Shirley; four children, Erik of San Diego, Jennifer of Davis, and Lee and Betsy of Albuquerque, N.M.; seven grandchildren, Brandon, Estaban, Roxanne, Gabriella, Marcos (Bonzito) Melinda and Erik Jr.; two sisters, Cleo, and Rose; and one brother, Leno.

He also is survived by numerous nephews, nieces, friends, his dog Ogg and cats Pinto and Negro.

VEGA

Francisco Vega, Jr.

Francisco Vega Jr. died at the U.C. Davis Medical Center in Sacramento on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, at the age of 19. He was born in Woodland on Sept. 9, 1983.

Mr. Vega attended grade school in Esparto as well as Lee and Douglass junior high schools and Woodland High School.

Mr. Vega is survived by his parents, Francisco and Silvia Vega. Brother, Alberto Vega. Grandparents, Celia and Francisco Vega and Victoria and Jesus Collazo, all of Woodland. Also surviving him are aunts and uncles, Ma. De Jesus, Lourdes and Guillermo Vega, Alicia and Rafael Sanchez, Jose Luis and Rosario Collazo, Felipe, Alma, Ramon, and Maria Collazo, Carlos and Rosa Vega, Jose and Tammy, Celia Vega, Marina and Raul Noriega, Miguel and Rosa, Sergio and Ma, Luisa, Luis and Melissa Vega, Rosa and Luis Gomez, all of Woodland, Araceli Collazo of Monterrey Nuevo Leon, Mexico and Roberto and Lupe Ochoa of Sacramento.

Other survivors include numerous cousins and friends in Woodland and other cousins, uncles, and aunts in Southern California, Chicago and Mexico.

The funeral mass is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Holy Rosary Church, today, Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002.

McNary's Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.

SAUR

William "Bill" Saur

William "Bill" Saur, 57, of Sacramento, died on Jan. 4, 2005, at the UC Davis Medical Center of complications from Hepatitis C.

He was born on Sept. 9, 1947, in Ehningen, Germany, and moved to Massachusetts when he was 6 years old. He received his bachelor's degree in psychology from Clark University in Worcester, Mass., where he met Emily Kaufman, who later became his wife and the mother of his two children.

The couple moved to San Francisco in 1971 where he did post-graduate work. He finished his master's degree in psychology at Cal State Los Angeles and then took a job with Child Protective Services in Seattle. In 1981, the family moved back to Massachusetts and he worked for Dynamic Personnel as a recruiter until opening his own personnel agency.

After moving to Davis in 1990, he worked as a private investigator for Tom Elliot and then opened his own firm, Bill Saur Associates. He moved to Sacramento in 1994.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Margarete Kalajian, in 2002.

He is survived by his son, Chris, 24, of Davis, and daughter, Eva, 20, who is attending college at Cal State Northridge; brother, Gene Saur and his wife Donna of Los Angeles; sister, Kacie LaChapelle, of Springfield, Mass.; his former wife, Emily, of Davis and former sister-in-law Laura Kaufman of Los Angeles; and three nieces.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Hepatitis Foundation International, 504 Blick Drive, Silver Spring, MD 20904-2901, www.hepfi.org.
