Hedwig G. Russell

Hedwig G. Russell, a former owner of D.W. Curry's in Old Greenwich and a resident of Marlton, N.J., died on Feb. 8, 2010.

She is survived by her daughter, Frances Balleste and her husband, Bill; a sister, Hannelore Lotz and her husband, Norman; and two nephews, Steven Lotz and his wife, Antoinette, and Robert Lotz. She was predeceased by her husband, David H. Russell.

A graveside service was held on Feb.13, 2010 at Greenwood-Union cemetery in Rye, N.Y.

Jane Van Tassel Crowle

Jane Van Tassel Crowle, 81, an Old Greenwich resident and longtime employee at the Perrot Memorial Library, died on Feb. 18, 2010.

Crowle was born on Sept. 30, 1928 in Elizabeth, N.J. to Leland and Evelyn Van Tassel.

She was an executive administrative assistant at the Perrot Library for 38 years and also volunteered at the First Congregational Church in Old Greenwich.

Crowle enjoyed many summers surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren by the pool in her backyard and on annual family vacations in Wellfleet, Cape Cod.

She is survived by her two daughters, Nancy Hall Curcio and her husband Sam, and Lynn Ann O'Gorman and her husband Paul; and two sons, W. Richard Crowle, Jr., and Bruce Allan Crowle and his wife Joanne. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Kimberly O'Gorman Menges and her husband David; Mark O'Gorman and his wife Patti; Matthew O'Gorman and his wife Erin; Jason Hall and his wife Maureen; Kristin Hall; Daniel Hall and his wife Megan; Carrie Crowle Nolen and her husband Mike; Adam Crowle; and Samantha Crowle; eight great-grandchildren: Erin, Sean and Cara Menges, Maggie and Jack O'Gorman, Audrey Hall, Keller Hall and Caitlyn O'Gorman; and a brother, Lee Van Tassel of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years and best friend, Walter R. Crowle.

A memorial service was held on Feb. 22 at the First Congregational Church in Old Greenwich.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the First Congregational Church. Arrangements by the Castiglione Funeral Home, Inc. in Greenwich.

Pamela L. Dempsey

Pamela L. Demsey, 52, a former Greenwich resident, federal prosecutor and daughter of Barbara Rice Dempsey and the late William L. Dempsey, Jr. of Old Greenwich, died on Feb. 6, 2010 in Washington D.C., after a ten-year battle with leukemia, with her husband and daughters by her side.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa., Dempsey was a 1975 graduate of Greenwich High School and a cum laude graduate of Duke University. She earned her J.D. degree from the University of Connecticut Law School, where she was an editor of the Connecticut Law Review.

Dempsey, a federal prosecutor for the Justice Department's Criminal Division and an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, was a national expert in forfeiture law who regularly advised government lawyers throughout the country on legal strategies related to forfeitures of businesses engaged in criminal activities. She began her legal career at Shipman and Goodwin in Hartford and later joined the U.S. Department of Justice as an assistant U.S. attorney in Manhattan under Rudolf Giuliani.

After moving to Washington, Dempsey rose to become Deputy Chief of Asset Forfeiture and Money Laundering at the Justice Department, working under attorneys general Janet Reno, John Ashcroft, Alberto Gonzalez and Eric Holder.

She continued to work during her illness, which included a bone marrow transplant and long periods of hospitalization at Johns Hopkins University Medical Center and George Washington University Hospital.

Dempsey was an active member of Temple Sinai in Washington, D.C., where she celebrated her adult Bat Mitzvah in 2008.

She is survived by her husband, Bruce J. Charendoff, a Washington attorney and Sabre Holdings government relations executive; two daughters, Sally Charendoff and Caroline Charendoff of Greensboro, N.C.; her mother, Barbara Dempsey of Old Greenwich; and two sisters, Allison Gruppo and her husband Stephen of Darien, and Charlotte Pendleton of Chatham, N.J.; and many additional relatives, friends and colleagues.

Funeral services were held at Temple Sinai in Washington, D.C. on Feb. 14. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Dr. Jonathan Gerber's Research Fund, c/o Anne Kennan Engleby, Department of Medicine, Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine, One Charles Center, 100 N. Charles St., Suite 444, Baltimore, MD 21201.

Roselyn J. McFadden

Roselyn J. McFadden, 77, Greenwich native and longtime Greenwich High School employee, passed away on Feb. 18, 2010 at Stamford Hospital.

She was born on Feb. 29, 1932 to Nicholas and Catherine Cuneen Canavino.

For many years she worked as an administrative assistant at Greenwich High School. McFadden enjoyed tennis and bowling, and she was an avid gardener.

McFadden is survived by two sons, Brian McFadden and his wife, Mary Beth, and Michael McFadden; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael McFadden, in 1993.

A Mass of Christian burial was held on Feb. 23 at St. Mary Church. Interment followed in St. Mary cemetery in Greenwich.

Leo Sabin Nikora

Leo Sabin Nikora, 94, formerly of Greenwich and Torrington, died of natural causes in Greensboro, N.C. on Feb. 7, 2010.

Nikora was born March 10, 1915, in Milwaukee, Wis.

He is survived by his son, Leo Sabin Nikora III and daughter-in-law Beverley Nikora of Kihei, Hawaii; a daughter, Cleo Nikora Dimmick and son-in-law Gary Dimmick of Greensboro; and a son, Henry Louis Nikora and daughter-in-law Maureen Nikora of New Hartford. He also is survived by two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Cleo Wehrle Nikora, and one brother, Alexander Nikora. A memorial service will be held graveside at Wauwatosa cemetery in Wisconsin, on May 22.

Chiara Cechet Drufovka Taylor

Chiara Cechet Drufovka Taylor, 62, passed away peacefully on Feb. 14, 2010 in Greenwich.

She was born in Trieste, Italy on July 6, 1947 to Mario and Marcella Cechet and emigrated to the U.S. in 1969.

Taylor's professional positions included private secretary to the late actor Anthony Quinn, secretary to a corporate president and vice president, and most recently legal secretary at a law firm on Park Avenue in New York City.

She leaves her two children, James Drufovka of Greenwich and Barbara Drufovka of Vermont; two grandchildren, Maya and Anya, also of Vermont; a sister, Fiorella Castello, a brother, Elvio Cechet, and several nieces and nephews, all of Trieste.

A memorial Mass will be held at a future date.

Christine Henrikson Detmer

Christine Henrikson Detmer, 97, of Greenwich, died on Feb. 21, 2010 at her home.

Detmer was an award-winning flower arranger and an animal and nature lover. She was especially fond of visiting Greenwich Point and taking in the views at the Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, N.Y. She was a member of the University Club, The Travel Club of Greenwich, Knollwood Garden Club, Indian Harbor Yacht Club, English Speaking Union, and The Woman's Club of Greenwich. A devout Christian, she was an active member of Christ Church Greenwich, St. Paul's, and Stanwich Congregational Church.

Detmer was born in Goteberg, Sweden. She immigrated to the United States in 1931 and married the late George H. Bretscher in 1932. She was a Powers model in New York City and appeared in the Saturday Evening Post and a fashion show screened at Radio City Music Hall. She married Jerome V. Detmer at the Metropolitan Club in New York City in 1937 and was the daughter-in-law of Julian Francis Detmer of Tarrytown, N.Y. She became a U.S. citizen in 1948.

Detmer was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome Vincent Detmer, a son, Jerome Henrikson Detmer, and her sister, Margit H. Jakobsson, of Malmo, Sweden. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert George and Ann Smith Bretscher, of Athens, Ga.; grandchildren, Susan Bretscher Crisler and husband Jon Brandt Crisler, Atlanta, Ga., Christine Bretscher Cooper and husband John David Cooper, Charlotte, N.C., Prentiss Bretscher Stidham and husband Thaddeus Jon Stidham, Knoxville, Tenn.; and great-grandchildren Wilson and Frances Crisler, Eli and Perrin Stidham, and Prentiss Ann Cooper. She also is survived by her niece, Lillemor Emland, of Malmo, Sweden.

A private committal service for family members took place on Feb. 25, 2010, in Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, N.Y. A memorial service followed at Stanwich Congregational Church. Funeral arrangements were made by the Leo P. Gallagher Funeral Home in Greenwich.
