Emma E. Coverdale, 90

MILFORD - Emma E. Coverdale of Milford and Fort Myers Fla. died of a heart attack Friday April 10, 1998, in Atlantic General Hospital, in Berlin, Md. She was 90.

Mrs. Coverdale worked for many years at the L.D. Caulk Co. in Milford, and later for W.T. Grant Co. in Milford until it closed in 1966.

She was a member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Milford, and a member of the Milford Senior Center.

Mrs. Coverdale enjoyed spending winters in Ft. Myers, Fla., since 1956.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Coverdale in 1976.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, James E. and Lynn L. Coverdale of Lakeland, Fla., and Charles R. and Rosemary T. Coverdale of Milford; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, and four step-great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Seabury Avenue and School Place, Milford.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Ave., Milford.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milford.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the St. John's Building Fund, Seabury Avenue and School Place, Milford, DE 19963.

Marian S. Spencer, 80

LEWES - Marian S. Spencer of Lewes, and also of Milton, died Friday, April 10, 1998, in the Lewes Convalescent Center. She was 80.

Mrs. Spencer was born in Georgetown, daughter of the late Grover and Madalyn Sammons.

She was employed as a nurse assistant with the Wilmington General Hospital in 1962, until she became ill. She was also a homemaker.

Mrs. Spencer's wish was to see her great-grandchildren and granddaughter graduate from college to become a nurse, which was accomplished before her passing.

She was preceded in death by, in addition to her parents, her husband, Lloyd C. Spencer, and a grandson, John Allen.

She is survived by two sons, Robert L. Spencer of Wilmington and Steven D. Spencer of Oak Orchard; four daughters, Elizabeth A. Jenicki of Wilmington, Evelyn M. Spencer of Milton, Linda E. Spencer of Rock Hall, Md., and Janice L. Spencer of Lewes; three sisters, Esther Scaggs of Dover, and Marjie Pettit and Dorothy Sammons, both of Georgetown; two granddaughters, Michelle Price of Oxford, Pa., and Buffy Janicki of Wilmington; a grandson, Vincent McCrackin of Felton; a great-grandson, Vincent McCrackin Jr. of Felton; three great-granddaughters, Kalee Figurelli of Jacksonville, Fla., and Christina Price and Taylor Price, both of Oxford, Pa.

Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Kings Highway, Lewes. The Rev. Randy Booth will officiate.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Bethel U.M. Cemetery, Lewes.

The family suggests contributions may be made to the Wishing Well Center, in honor of Vincent McCrackin Jr., 885-C S. Governors Ave., Dover, DE 19901.

Mildred P. Naudain, 90

CLAYTON - Mildred P. Naudain of Clayton died of heart failure Friday, April 10, 1998, in Kent General Hospital. She was 90.

Mrs. Naudain was born in Denton, Md., daughter of the late T. Wilton and Sadie C.Porter.

She was a graduate of Goldey Beacom College.

Mrs. Naudain was employed with the YWCA, Wilmington, with the Fred Klair Sheriff's Office, Wilmington, as a secretary with Holloway Brothers Tools, Hockessin & Wilmington, and was a homemaker of the family farm, Little Baltimore, Newark.

She was a member of the Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church for 60-70 years, where she sang in the choir; of the Harmony Grange of Wilmington, where she wrote, directed and sang in their minstrel shows for seven years; of the Pamona Grange of New Castle; of the Delaware State Grange; of the National Grange, where she was past delegate and held most of the offices; of the D.A.R.; of the Waverley Club of Hockessin; she sang in the Lions Club Hockessin/Yorklyn minstrel shows and also wrote and directed a rose drill for the Delaware State Grange which was adopted by the National Grange and is used all over the country today.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William H.

She is survived by a son, William W. Naudain of Clayton; a brother, Richard Porter of Newport Richie, Fla.; four sisters, Mabel Narvel of Wilmington, Rachel Rambo of New Castle, Vivian Ball of Hockessin and Twila Parker of Painesville, Ohio; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, where friends may call an hour and a half prior to the service. The Rev. Pat Singleton will officiate.

Burial will be in the Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Wilmington.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions may be made to the Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, c/o Robert T. Jones and the Foard Funeral Home, 122 W. Main St., Newark, DE 19711.

Lucille Phillips, 81

BRIDGEVILLE - Lucille Phillips of Bridgeville died Thursday, April 9, 1998, in the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. She was 81.

Ms. Phillips was born in Jones County, N.C., daughter of the late Clyde E. Phillips and Bernice Newbern.

She was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church, where she served on the Mother Board, was president of the senior choir, was a pastor's aide, a past member of the Kitchen Committee and a member of the Seven Sisters, where she served faithfully until her health failed.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Phillips.

She is survived by three sons, Ernest Tillman of Landover, Md., and Clyde Parker and Larry Parker, both of Bridgeville; three daughters, Christine Wright and Selena Spencer, both of Milwaukee, Wis., and Bernette Evans of Bridgeville; a daughter-in-law, Lila Tillman of Landover, Md.; a son-in-law, the Rev. Woodrow Evans of Bridgeville; three brothers, Nate Phillips and Leo Phillips, both of Kingston, N.C., and Troy Phillips of Bridgeville; two sisters-in-law, Gloria Phillips of Bridgeville and Dora Lee Phillips of Washington, D.C.; a brother-in-law, Neil Robinson of Kingston, N.C.; a sister, Margaret Robinson of Kingston, N.C.; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Mount Olive Baptist Church, First Street, Bridgeville.

Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Burial will be in the Middleford Cemetery, Seaford.

Ethel Mae Weal, 65

BRIDGEVILLE - Ethel Mae Weal of Bridgeville died of liver disease Friday, April 10, 1998, in the Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 65.

Mrs. Weal was born in Milford, daughter of the late Willie and Hattie Teagle.

She was employed with H. P. Cannon, Bridgeville.

Mrs. Weal was a member of the Williams Chapel Holiness Church, Bridgeville, where she served as an evangelist, usher, steward, senior and mass choir member, pastor's aide and on the missionary board.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert S. Weal Sr., in 1992, a brother, William Teagle, and a sister, Fannie Teagle.

She is survived by four sons, Henry Teagle of Scranton, Pa., Robert Teagle Sr. of Buffalo, N.Y., John Teagle of Bridgeville and Kevin Teagle Sr. of Queens, N.Y.; two daughters, Alberta Smith of Bridgeville and Laverne Weal of Greenwood; three stepsons, Albert Weal Jr. of Laurel, Md., James Weal of Painter, Va., and Timothy Weal of Bridgeville; two stepdaughters, Joyce Weal of Virginia Beach, Va., and Mary Jane Brummell of Bridgeville; 32 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. today at the Williams Chapel Holiness Church, North Camden Street, Bridgeville, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Charles W. Smith will officiate.

Burial will be in the Middleford Cemetery, Middleford.

Martha Libis Hitchens, 68

LEWES - Martha Libis Hitchens of Lewes died Friday, April 10, 1998, in the Lewes Convalescent Center. She was 68.

Mrs. Hitchens was born in Painter, Va., daughter of the late Harold and Pearl Virginia Libis.

She was a graduate of Western Maryland College with a bachelor's degree in chemistry and biology.

Mrs. Hitchens was employed as a social worker with the state of Delaware Division of Social Services for 31 years, retiring in 1992. She was awarded Employee of the Year in 1990 by the state of Delaware.

She was chairperson of the Mission Task Force at Epworth United Methodist Church, overseeing 19 local projects; a board member of the Epilepsy Association of Delaware and she was a committee person for LEND A HAND.

Mrs. Hitchens was highly respected both in her church and professional field.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Preston W. Hitchens Sr., in 1978.

She is survived by two daughters, Katherine E. Hitchens, at home, and Ruth Ann Donges and grandson, Christopher, both of Lewes; a son, Preston W. Hitchens Jr. of Marlton, N.J.; a sister, Ellen Libis of Richmond, Va.; a brother, Claude Libis of Baltimore, Md.; a nephew, Kenny Libis of Westminster, Md.; and two nieces, Claudia Libis of Deerfield, N. H., and Louise Jarvis of R.I., and a host of friends.

Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Epworth U.M. Church, Baltimore Avenue, Rehoboth Beach.

Martha J. McCabe, 96

GEORGETOWN - Martha J. McCabe of Georgetown died from complications of a stroke, Sunday, April 12, 1998, in the Lewes Convalescent Center. She was 96.

Mrs. McCabe was born in Chatham, N.Y., daughter of the late George and Mollie Schufelt Wharton.

She was employed as an assistant manager of both the Georgetown and Milton Silco Stores and later operated a grocery store in Georgetown, retiring in the early 1960s.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ernest Hall, in 1927, and her second husband, Horace McKinley McCabe, in 1968.

She is survived by a son, Horace M. McCabe Jr. of Seaford; two daughters, Marian E. Phillips of Georgetown and Helen H. Maddox of Lewes; two sisters, Frances Dukes of Georgetown and Amy Shockley of Salisbury, Md.; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Watson Funeral Home, Washington Street, Millsboro, where friends may call two hours prior to the service. The Rev. James Laugrall will officiate.

Burial will be in the Parsons Cemetery, Salisbury, Md.

Ann Layton Newton Mears, 64

SEAFORD - Ann Layton Newton Mears of Seaford died of cancer Monday, April 13, 1998, in her home. She was 64.

Mrs. Mears was born in Bridgeville, daughter of the late William J. and Ella Virginia Layton Newton.

She was a graduate of Goldey Beacom College, Wilmington.

Mrs. Mears was employed as a secretary with the Seaford School District for 21 years, retiring in 1991.

She was a member of St. John's U.M. Church.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Jack E. Mears; two daughters, Laura M. Sears and Jinny M. Bird, both of Seaford; and three grandchildren, Angela Monaco, Brian Bird and Jessica Bird.

Memorial service will be 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the St. John's U.M. Church, Pine and Poplar streets, Seaford. The Rev. Kari K. Jones will officiate.

Burial will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Seaford.

The family suggests contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 91 Rivers End Drive, Seaford, DE 19973.

Ethel W. Ackerman, 97

MILFORD - Ethel W. Ackerman of Milford, died Sunday, April 12, 1998, in the Milford Center. She was 97.

Mrs. Ackerman was employed as a secretary with L. D. Caulk Company, Milford, and then with T. C. Collins Insurance, Milford, for several years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William H., in 1983.

No immediate survivors.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, 1998 in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milford.

Instead of flowers, contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 611 Forest St., Dover, DE 19904.

Edith Mae Pringle, 78

MILFORD - Edith Mae Pringle of Milford died of heart failure Sunday, April 12, 1998, in Milford Memorial Hospital. She was 78.

Mrs. Pringle was born in Latrobe, Pa.

She was employed as a supervisor of central supply services with Milford Memorial Hospital for 18 years, retiring in 1981.

Mrs. Pringle enjoyed doing crafts and giving them to friends and making candies and selling them as 'Chocolates by Pringle.'

She was a dedicated member of the Cornerstone Church of the Assemblies of God, Milford.

Mrs. Pringle was a devoted mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Roy, in 1975.

She is survived by two daughters, Joanna M. Davis of Milford and Delores J. 'Dee' Walls and her husband, Ed, with whom she lived since 1994; a grandson, Scott Walls of Milford; and a granddaughter, Meghan Dougherty of Frederick, Md.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Cornerstone Church of the Assemblies of God, South Walnut Street, Milford.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions may be made to the Cornerstone Church Building Fund.
