SMYRNA - Katherine D. 'Kitty' Bailey of Smyrna died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital. She was 83.
Mrs. Bailey was born Sept. 20, 1915, in Smyrna, the daughter of the late James Wallace Davis and Rena Jones Davis.
She was a graduate of Smyrna's John Bassett Moore High School, Class of 1934.
Mrs. Bailey was a prominent Smyrna citizen and an active member of many local and state organizations.
She married Clay F. Bailey on Jan. 15, 1936. He died April 5, 1959, leaving her solely responsible for rearing two young sons.
Mrs. Bailey and her husband operated a grocery store on Smyrna-Clayton Avenue. She also was employed in the office of Wilson Refrigeration. In 1961, she was hired by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. as a consultant to work out of the Dover office. Mrs. Bailey held the distinction of being the first female consultant in Delaware to be employed by that company. She later became an employee of the state Board of Education in Dover and faithfully served as the administrative secretary of the board until her retirement in 1984.
She was a people person, a trait which began in her youth. She went to Sunday school and church at Asbury United Methodist Church in Smyrna and joined Epworth League, and, as an adult, became an active member in the WSCS and the Harvey C. Jones Bible Class. She served on the old Official Board and later the Administrative Council, during which time she was a member of the Planning and Development Committee for the erection of the new church parsonage and educational wing.
From the time she was able to cast her first ballot, Mrs. Bailey was a registered Republican, and later became affiliated with the Republican Women's Club, holding positions on local, state and national committees.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion David C. Harrison Post 14 in Smyrna and enjoyed working on its many committees and activities, including being a delegate many times to the state organization. She was a past president of the state and local auxiliaries. She was the chairwoman of the March of Dimes drives for over 20 years.
She was a member and past president of the Twentieth Century Club in Smyrna and served in both the local club and the State Federation of Women's Clubs.
She enjoyed being a volunteer at the gift shop for the Historic Houses of Odessa.
Mrs. Bailey became a member and attended meetings regularly at the Duck Creek Historical Society. Whenever she was asked to help, she always did so, beginning with the first autumn in Duck Creek, where she served as a volunteer hostess. She became interested in the work of the society and in the history of 'my town.' She became a member of the board of directors, served as treasurer, and assisted with the acquisition of the Barracks, which is now the Smyrna Museum. She volunteered to be the curator and guide, a position which she held faithfully for the last decade. Her interest in historic preservation prompted her to join the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Smithsonian Institution, the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation and the Smyrna-Clayton Heritage Association.
She was a charter member of the Smyrna High School Alumni Association.
Mrs. Bailey was in the Volunteer Nurses Corps in World War II and, for several years, was a member of the election board of the town of Smyrna.
In 1996, she was voted the winner of the Great Person Award by the citizens of the Smyrna-Clayton area.
In 1998, Mrs. Bailey received the Tourism Award from Gov. Thomas R. Carper.
In addition to her husband of 23 years, she was preceded in death by a son, Danford C. Bailey, in 1986.
She is survived by a son, George Larry Bailey of Smyrna; two brothers, Robert L. Davis of Ocean Pines, Md., and Preston C. Davis of Media, Pa.; a grandson, David C. Bailey of Smyrna; and two great-grandchildren, Brittney and Courtney Bailey, both of Smyrna.
Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Asbury United Methodist Church, 22-24 W. Mount Vernon St., Smyrna, where friends may call 7-9 p.m. Monday.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna.

Michael Brochet, 68
RIDLEY PARK, Pa. - Michael Brochet of Ridley Park, formerly of Chester, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, in his home. He was 68.
Mr. Brochet was born Aug. 17, 1930, in Chester, son of the late Michael and Katheryn Matkowska Brochet.
He worked for Phoenix Steel Company, Claymont, Del., from 1948-1983. He was a truck driver for P-R Finishing Co., Folcroft, from 1987-1998.
Mr. Brochet was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
He was a member of St. Madeline Catholic Church, Ridley Park; past post commander of American Legion Post 546; and a member of Indian River Yacht Club, Millsboro, Del.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, John Carmen, Andrew Brochet and Nicholas Brochet; and two sisters, Anne Waters and Sue Hinkle.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Adele Macielag Brochet; two sons, Michael J. 'Mickey' Brochet of Ridley Park and Stephen J. Brochet of Millsboro; two daughters, Debbie Coleman of Wilmington, Del., and Dianne Brochet of Ridley Park; a brother, Peter Brochet of Chester; a sister; Mary Lipp of Chester; and four grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Madeline Catholic Church, Penn Street and Morton Avenue, Ridley Park, where friends may call from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Monday at White-Luttrell Funeral Homes Ltd., 311 N. Swarthmore Ave., Ridley Park. Friends may also call 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Lawn Croft Cemetery, Linwood.

Josephine A. Burke, 92
FELTON - Josephine A. Burke of Felton died of natural causes Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, in Courtland Manor Nursing Home, Delaware. She was 92.
Mrs. Burke was a member of St. Bernadette's Catholic Church, Harrington, and of the Harrington Senior Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E. Burke Sr., in 1972.
She is survived by four sons, Thomas E. Burke Jr. of Rock Hall, Md., Robert J. Burke of Spokane, Wash., Lawrence J. Burke of Dover and Daniel J. Burke of Canadensis, Pa.; six daughters, Irene Haase of Fort Myers, Fla., Rita Merritt of Lincoln, Rose Marie Rautio of Mesa, Ariz., Betty Ann Koss of Wilmington, Mary Lou Mongiello of New Castle and Kathleen Spicola of Wilmington; 25 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and a great-great grandchild.
Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Bernadette's Church, Harrington, where friends may call two hours before the service.
Burial will be 3 p.m. Tuesday in Edgewood Memorial Park, Delaware County, Pa.

James Deputy Davis III, 85
GEORGETOWN, Md. - James Deputy Davis III of Georgetown died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, in Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C. He was 85.
Mr. Davis was born Aug. 23, 1913, in Middletown, Del., the son of the late James D. Davis II and Frances Scott Davis. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Kent County, Md.
He was a 1935 graduate of Washington College.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a lieutenant junior grade, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater.
Mr. Davis was a district salesman for 35 years for the Ralston Purina Co. of St. Louis, Mo. After retiring, he worked as a real estate salesman for Cooper-Barroll Real Estate in Chestertown. He became a broker, opening his own company, Davis Real Estate, in Galena, Md.
He was a member of Chester River Yacht and Country Club, Chestertown. He was a member of Shrewsbury Parish, Kennedyville, and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Earleville. He was a past president of Galena Lions Club, and was a board member of Westminster Cemetery, Georgetown. Just last fall, he was recognized for his efforts for locating the land for the Kent County Commissioners to establish Toal Park, between Galena and Georgetown.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Agnes Wilson Davis, in 1984.
He is survived by a son, Jarman Wilson 'Jerry' Davis of Annapolis; a daughter, Frances Davis Ward of Columbia; and three grandchildren.
Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Shrewsbury Parish Church, Md. 213, Kennedyville. The Rev. Thomas Hughes will officiate.
Burial will be in Westminster Cemetery, Georgetown.

Reuben S. Ebling, 94
RIDGELY, Md. - Reuben S. Ebling of Ridgely died of heart failure Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in Memorial Hospital at Easton, Easton. He was 94.
Mr. Ebling was born in Ridgely, the son of the late Gabriel King Ebling and Mary Ann Stoudt Ebling.
He was a farmer. He also was a foreman for Saulsbury Brothers, Ridgely, for 27 years.
Mr. Ebling was a member of the Ridgely Church of the Brethren, Ridgely.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, John Ebling, Paul Ebling, Daniel Ebling, Amos Ebling, Eli Ebling and Ira Ebling; and two sisters, Mary Cecil and Deborah Lynch.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mabel C. Ebling of Ridgely.
Service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Moore Funeral Home P.A., 12 S. Second St., Denton, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in Denton Cemetery, Denton.

John D. Green Sr., 75
MILLSBORO - John D. Green Sr. of Millsboro died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 75.
Mr. Green was born Oct. 31, 1923, in Sewanee, Tenn., son of the late John McFarlane Green and Lethia Rhodes.
Mr. Green was a carpenter.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Green was a member of the VFW Georgetown post.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his companion, Kathryn (Kitty) Carmine, Jan. 7, 1999.
He is survived by three sons, John David Green of Fairhill, W. Michael Green of Redden and J. Dennis Green of Georgetown; a daughter, Linda Sue Green of Milford; two sisters, Geraldine Cantrell of Sewanee and Mamie Hawkersmith of Decherd, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Dodd-Carey Chapel, 307 North Bedford St., Georgetown, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Lawrence Lilly will officiate.
Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Georgetown.

Shane C. Miller Jr., four months
MILLSBORO - Shane C. Miller Jr. of Millsboro died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, in his home. He was four months old.
Shane was born Sept. 11, 1998, the son of Shane C. Miller Sr. and Cynthia N. Ross.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandmother, Kathy Ross of Millsboro; maternal great-grandparents, William and Mary Ann Scott of Inverness, Fla.; paternal grandparents, Gina Miller of Brighton, Mass., and Roland Mumford of Frankford; maternal great-grandparents, Joseph and Dorothy Ross of Coatesville, Pa.; paternal great-grandmother, Blanche Miller of Millsboro; paternal great-grandmother, Adelle Mumford of Frankford; and an uncle, Keenan Miller of Millsboro.
Service will be held 1 p.m. Monday at the Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Karen Booth will officiate.
Burial will be in Harmony Cemetery, Millsboro.
Donald G. Mitchell, 81
MILFORD - Donald G. Mitchell of Milford died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in Bayhealth Medical Center-Milford Memorial Hospital. He was 81.
Mr. Mitchell was born Sept. 17, 1917, the son of the late Harry R. and Grace Robinson Mitchell of Appleton, Maine, and Wakefield, Mass.
He was a 1938 graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He served as a major in the U.S. Army under Gen. George Patton during the D-Day invasion of Normandy, and retired as a lieutenant colonel from the U.S. Army Reserve, Chemical Corps, in 1971 with 31 years of service.
He was a technical service manager for Baker's Chocolate/ General Foods, Dorchester, Mass., and Dover for 42 years, retiring in 1981.
He was an active member of the Mayflower Society, which supplies a history of the Mayflower and the traditions of Thanksgiving to every fifth-grade class in Delaware. Mr. Mitchell was a direct descendant of the Pilgrim Isaac Allerton.
The last remaining Pilgrim House, known as the Howland House, on Sandwich Street in Plymouth, Mass., was built by his distant grandfather, Jacob Mitchell, nine generations removed.
He was a past president of the Milford Rotary Club, a member of the Milford Rotary Club, a member of the Milford Memorial Hospital board of directors from 1971 until 1988 and a member of the Shawnee Country Club, where he was an avid golfer.
He was a friend of the First Presbyterian Church of Milford.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Norman L. Mitchell, in 1917.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ruth Hall Mitchell; a son and daughter-in-law, John W. and Terri F. Mitchell of Milford; a daughter, Donna Briggs of Dover; a sister, Marion Minnick of Keene, N.H.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three nieces and nephews; as well as several cousins in Maine.
Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Ave., Milford, where friends may call 7-9 p.m., Monday.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milford.

Glennwood K. Pase Sr., 61
CHERRY HILL, N.J. - Glennwood K. Pase Sr., of Cherry Hill died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, in JFK Hospital, Cherry Hill. He was 61.
Mr. Pase was born in Ellendale, Del., and moved to Cherry Hill over 20 years ago.
He attended Swarthmore College, receiving a bachelor's degree in English literature, and he attended South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, receiving his degree in mechanical engineering.
He served in the Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army, Europe, in Heidelberg, Germany, during the Vietnam War era.
He was employed as the chief design engineer for the Joseph Oat Corp. in Camden and was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, contributing immensely to the global industry for years to come.
He had many published articles pertaining to his field.
Mr. Pase was the true definition of a gentleman and a scholar; he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his son, Glennwood K. Pase Jr. of Cherry Hill; a daughter, Francesca Amelia Pase of Easton, Pa.; five brothers, Clarence Pase of Milford, Del., Charlie Pase of La Luz, N.M., Golden Pase of Milford, Bob Pase of Havelock, N.C., and Walter Pase of Las Cruces, N.M.

Kenneth Charles Pierce, 79
BEAR - Kenneth Charles Pierce of Bear died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, in his home. He was 79.
Mr. Pierce was born May 27, 1919, in Cadillac, Mich., the son of the late Charles Pierce and Florence Kempster Pierce.
He was a captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
Mr. Pierce was the manager of the Wilmington office of Aetna Life and Casualty for 31 years, retiring in 1981.
He was a member of Peniel United Methodist Church, Newport.
Mr. Pierce enjoyed amateur radio. He had played semiprofessional baseball, and coached and managed for Little League.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Pauline W. Pierce, in 1980.
He is survived by a son, Kenneth C. Pierce Jr. of Newark; three daughters, Gail McMakin of Allentown, Pa., Vicki Peterson of Lewes and Lisa Fannin of Bear, with whom he lived; a brother, Merton D. Pierce of Arlington, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Peniel United Methodist Church, Newport.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Nichols-Gilmore Funeral Home, 212 E. Justis St., Newport.
Burial will be at Gracelawn Cemetery, New Castle, immediately following the service.
