Walter 'Pete' Mason, 88

DOVER - Walter 'Pete' Mason of Dover died of natural causes Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, in Westminster Retirement Community Health Center, Dover. He was 88.

Mr. Mason was born Nov. 10, 1910, in Sudlersville, Md., the son of the late Julie Mason.

He served in the U.S. Army in 1942.

He worked as a landscaper, construction worker and on various farms.

In addition to his mother, he is preceded in death by a brother, Robert 'Bob' Mason.

He is survived by three cousins, Pearl Gambino and Elnetta Mason, both of Montclair, N.J., and Gloria L. Chappell of Dover, a devoted cousin; a host of family and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bennie Smith Funeral Home, 717 West Division St., Dover, with Elder Paul Cauldwell officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be 9:00 a.m. Thursday in Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Bear.

Shobert Adams, 82

SEAFORD - Shobert Adams of Seaford died of heart failure Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 82.

Mr. Adams was born in Wichita Falls, Texas, the son of the late Oliver Gogin and Mable Shobert Adams.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II who worked on the Manhattan Project.

Mr. Adams worked at the DuPont Co.'s Savannah River Plant in Aiken, S.C., from 1950-1965; and was a maintenance supervisor of Works Engineering at the DuPont Co. plant in Seaford from 1965-1980, when he retired.

He was a member of the Mount Olivet Methodist Church, Seaford, and a charter member of the Seaford Clam Chowder Marching Society, a group of men retired from the DuPont plant. He read and reviewed books for the Seaford Public Library, and was an avid organic gardener.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Elizabeth Edmondson Adams, in 1982.

He is survived by a son, James S. Adams of Seaford; two daughters, Linda C. Mondoux of Farmington, Mich., and Mary E. Adams of Annapolis, Md.; and seven grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Watson-Yates Funeral Home, Front and King streets, Seaford, with the Rev. Earle N. Baker officiating.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Seaford.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Botsford Continuing Care Corp. (operators of the Botsford Continuing Health Center), 21450 Archwood Circle, Farmington Hills, MI 48336.

Thomas B. Athey Jr., 93

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Thomas B. Athey Jr. of Chestertown died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, in the Health Care Center of Heron Point, Chestertown. He was 93.

Mr. Athey was born March 26, 1905, in Baltimore, the son of the late Thomas B. Athey Sr. and Avarilla A. Edwards Athey.

He was a graduate of the University of Maryland.

Mr. Athey worked as a salesman of industrial bags.

He was a 50-year member of the Fertilizer Industry Roundtable and a member of its board, and was honored by the organization as its 'Mr. Hospitality.' He was responsible for setting up meetings and arranging for entertainment, even after his retirement.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Florence Athey, in 1993.

He is survived by a son, Eric Carter Athey, of Aynor, S.C.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Service will be private at a later date.

Geneva Branch, 89

MIDDLETOWN - Geneva Branch of Middletown died Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998, in Riverside Care Center, Wilmington. She was 89.

Ms. Branch was born in Suffolk, Va., the daughter of the late Alfred and Rosa Branch.

She was the owner of a restaurant.

Ms. Branch was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Middletown.

She is survived by a daughter, Almatha Porter of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kingdom Hall, Middletown.

Burial will be private.

Wade W. Blankenship Sr., 62

HARRINGTON - Wade W. Blankenship Sr. of Harrington died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 62.

Mr. Blankenship was born in Woodman, Ky., the son of the late Arnold and Eva Mae Blankenship.

He worked as a poultry farmer for Allen Foods for many years.

Mr. Blankenship was a former member of Lighthouse Christian Center.

In his spare time, he liked to hunt and fish.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Nancy Blankenship of Harrington; two sons, Wade Blankenship Jr. of Georgetown and Larry D. Blankenship of Harrington; a daughter, Eva A. Dalious of Farmington; three brothers, Arnold Blankenship Jr. of Seaford and Larry Blankenship and Godfrey Blankenship, both of Auburn, Mich.; and three sisters, Dolly Young and Rosalee Holly, both of Auburn, and Darlene Tice of Columbus, Ohio.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. DuPont Highway, Harrington, DE 19952, with the Rev. Paul W. Stauffer of the Farmington Church of the Brethren officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Burial will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests that contributions to defray funeral expenses be made to the funeral home.

Edmond Clark, 75

SEAFORD - Edmond Clark of Seaford died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, in Life Care at Lofland Park, Seaford. He was 75.

Mr. Clark was born March 7, 1923, in Oklahoma.

He has no known survivors.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill Cemetery, 100 Sunnyside Road, Smyrna.

Louis Edward Copper, 87

CORDOVA, Md. - Louis Edward Copper of Cordova died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, in Memorial Hospital at Easton, Easton. He was 87.

Mr. Copper was born Feb. 11, 1911, in Talbot County, where he was raised.

He worked on Skipton Farm for 47 years.

He is survived by two sons, Joseph Copper and Nelson Copper, both of Easton; a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Walter Harris of Florida; six grandsons; two granddaughters, Diane and Doris; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Pisgah Church of God, Port Street, Easton, with Elder Agnes Claggett, pastor, officiating.

Friend may call at the church two hours prior to the service.

Burial will be in Paradise Cemetery, Trappe.

Alwine S. Cox, 89

SEAFORD - Alwine S. Cox of Seaford died of congestive heart failure Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, in Seaford Retirement and Rehabilitation Center of Genesis ElderCare, where she was a resident for the last five years. She was 89.

Mrs. Cox was a homemaker and a poultry grower in the Rhodesdale, Md., area for 20 years.

She was a member of Gethsemane United Methodist Church, Reliance, near Seaford.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Cox, in 1993.

She is survived by a son, S. Eric Cox of Seaford; a foster son, Terry C. Thomas of Rhodesdale; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hardesty Funeral Home, 202 Laws St., Bridgeville, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in Bridgeville Cemetery.

Catherine C. 'Cee' Coxe, 80

CECILTON, Md. - Catherine C. 'Cee' Coxe of Cecilton died of an unidentified viral lung disease Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, in Union Hospital, Elkton. She was 80.

Mrs. Coxe was born in Earleville, the daughter of the late Marion E. and Leona Yates Pearce Sr.

She received all her formal education in Cecil County.

She worked for the Board of Education in the food-service department for 37 years. Her dedication to those she worked with prompted efforts to secure benefits for the personnel who worked in the school system.

She loved to work in her garden.

Mrs. Coxe was an honorary member of the Cecilton Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, an active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Earleville, and a member of the Cecilton Homemakers Club and of a host of other organizations in her area.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Heston Coxe, in 1966.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Etta Coxe Jackson of Marietta, Ga.; three sisters, Anna Louise O'Neal and Leona Lum, both of Earleville, and Margaret Bramble of North East; a grandson, David T. Jackson; a great-granddaughter; Anna L. DuPont of Colorado; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 226 East Main St., Cecilton.

'An Occasion of Condolence' will be held 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Chester Cemetery, Chertertown, following the service.

Catherine Sample Drummond, 91

MILLSBORO - Catherine Sample Drummond of Millsboro died of a massive stroke Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 91.

Mrs. Drummond was born March 23, 1907, in Pungoteague, Va.

She was a domestic worker and a homemaker.

Mrs. Drummond was a steward with the Union Wesley Methodist Church in Clarksville, and was an active member of St. Paul's A.M.E. Church, Pungoteague, prior to coming to Delaware.

She is survived by a daughter, Lelia Drummond of Millsboro; a sister, Annie Upshur of Georgetown; four grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. today at Union Wesley United Church, Sussex 365, Clarksville, where friends may call two hours prior to the service.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.
