Mary Camper, 81

MILFORD - Mary Camper of Milford died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, in her home. She was 81.

Mrs. Camper was born in Milford, the daughter of the late Ada and Valvert Fox.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Camper was a member of the Margaret C. Pyle Rebekah Lodge, Milford, the Calvary U.M. Church, Milford, and the United Methodist Women.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur S. Camper, in 1976 and by three brothers, Lucius T. Fox, Emery Fox and Lyman Fox.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Wilbur Bruce Camper and Diane of Milford; four sisters, Sara Calahan, Helen Donovan, Barbara Robinson, all of Milford, and Mae Meeham of Wilmington; two grandsons, Bruce Eric Camper and his wife Dori of Salisbury, Md., and Darren Wayne Camper of Milford; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Home, 119 N.W. Front St., Milford, where friends may call 7 -9 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Robert Rowe will officiate.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milford.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Calvary U.M. Church, Church Street, Milford, DE 19963.

Lester R. Hudson, 88

FRANKFORD - Lester R. Hudson of Frankford died of heart failure Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, in Wicomico Nursing Home, Salisbury, Md. He was 88.

Mr. Hudson was born in and was a life long resident of Frankford, the son of the late Ralph and Ocia Hudson.

He was a self-employed farmer and grain buyer and weigh master for Murray's Feed company of Frankford and a former partner in Hudson and Baker, a company dealing in farming and subcontracting for produce.

Mr. Hudson was a charter member of Frankford Volunteer Fire Co., a 66-year member of the Frankford United Methodist Church and its administrative board, board of trustees and past president of its Methodist Men and the originator of the Golden Rule Club. He was formerly past president and member of the School Board of the John M. Clayton School District, and past president of the Frankford Kiwanis Club and a member of Odd Fellows Lodge #8 of Frankford.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Gertrude Hickman and a brother, Rollin L. Hudson Sr.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Gertrude Lowe Hudson of Frankford; a son, Bruce L.Hudson of Wilmington; two daughters, Lavessa H. Mitchell of Salisbury, Md., and Sandra H. Bell of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sons-in-law, S. Burton Mitchell of Salisbury and James W. Bell of Knoxville; a daughter-in-law, Jodi M. Hudson; 11 grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Frankford, where friends may call 7-9 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Dale Vroman will officiate.

Burial will be in Carey's Cemetery, Frankford.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Frankford United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, c/o Manship Payne, P.O. Box 37, Frankford, DE 19945.

John Logue, 73

LEWES - John Logue of Lewes died from heart failure Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, in Beebe Medical Hospital. He was 73.

Mr. Logue was born on April 11, 1925, in Philadelphia.

He was a World War II veteran.

Mr. Logue was a photo engraver for the Inquirer Press Co.

He is survived by three sons, John Logue of West Chester, Pa., Peter Logue of Boston and Patrick Logue of Cape May, N.J.; two daughters, Bridget Norquist of Vorhees, N.J.; and Nora Pearse of West Chester; four sisters, Donna Bibod of Newark, Kathleen McCreary of Morrisville, Pa., Margaret C. Schweitzer of Smyrna and Betty Dondero of New Castle and nine grandchildren.

Service and burial will be private.

Master Sgt. Todd W. Spence, 37

HARRINGTON - Master Sgt. Todd W. Spence of Harrington died due to injuries sustained in an traffic accident Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999. He was 37.

Sgt. Spence was born in Exmore, Va., on Oct. 3, 1961, the son of the late retired Chief Warrant Officer Third Class Tully W. Spence and Maria Rosa Tartaglia Spence.

He served seven years active duty in the U.S. Air Force and became a reservist on June 2, 1988. He had worked for Dover Air Force Base in Civil Service since August 9, 1993.

Sgt. Spence loved to travel, snow ski and his cats.

He did volunteer work for the USO, was actively involved with the Combined Federal Campaign, an affiliate of United Way and was a member of the Rock Church in Cheswold.

He is survived by a sister, Dale S. Rohl and her husband, John of Parksley, Va.; a nephew, Ethan Rohl of Parksley, Va., and many family members.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Rock Church of the Eastern Shore in Onley, Va.

Friends may call 3-5 p.m. Thursday at Torbert Funeral Chapel, Dover.

Burial will be in Belle Haven, Va.

Edlizabeth May Kemp, 71

WILLOW GROVE, Pa. - Elizabeth May Kemp of Willow Grove died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, in her home. She was 71.

Mrs. Kemp was born in October 13, 1927 in Wyoming, Del., the daughter of the late Thomas and Bertha Wright Rash.

She graduated from Caesar Rodney, class of 1946.

She retired in 1991 from the State of Delaware Insurance Commissioner's Office.

Mrs. Kemp was a charter member of the Camden-Wyoming Ladies of the Moose.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Charles Hampton Kemp of Willow Grove; two sons, Charles Micae Lemp of Washington, D.C., and Glen Ray Kemp of Willow Grove; a daughter, Phyllis Spiering of Willow Grove; two sisters, Pauline Watson of Dover, Del., and Susie Remus of Wyoming; Four grandchildren, Michael Heartly of Smyrna, Del., Matthew Kemp of Dover, Sheri Spiering of Dover and Kelly Kemp of Smyrna; and a great-grandson, Dorian Murray of Dover.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Pippin Funeral Home, Wyoming, where friends may call one and a half to one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Milton Kemp will officiate.

Burial will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Sandtown.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Delaware Hospice, Lotus Plaza, 911 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.

Roderick Scott O'Connor, 88

MILFORD - Roderick Scott O'Connor of Milford died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, in Island on the Lake, Genesis Elder Care Longwood, Fla. He was 88.

Mr. O'Connor lived in Woodshaven, Milford, Del., for over 20 years before moving to Longwood.

He graduated from Georgetown University, School of Foreign Service, in 1935.

Mr. O'Connor worked as the director of Traffic for the U.S. Maritime Administration in Washington, D.C., for 30 years, retiring in 1965.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Cynthia Louise Cornell O'Connor; two sons, R. Michael O'Connor of Ruskin, Fla., and Kevin O'Connor of Long Beach, Md.; four daughters, Lynne O'Connor of Longwood, Dianne Cater of Maui, Hawaii, Kathleen Casey O'Connor of Dover and Patricia O'Connor of Micanopy, Fla.

Service will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Gail Hano Lehman, 56

WORTON, Md. - Gail Hano Lehman of Worton died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, in Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital. She was 56.

Mrs. Lehman was born in New York, the daughter of the late Norman Pettit and Belle Hynson Pettit of Hampton, Va.

She worked with Landmark Finance Company as a collections officer for several years.

She enjoyed painting.

Mrs. Lehman volunteered her time with the American Red Cross, Dover Air Force Base. She was awarded the Red Cross Volunteer of the Year in 1997.

She was a past member of the Chestertown Jaycees and a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

She is survived by a son, Kirk Lehman of Chestertown, Md.; two daughters, Kecia Lehman of Chestertown and Tanya Brilz of Rock Hall, Md.; a brother, Norman Keith Pettit of Lumberton, N.C.; a sister, Pamela Fore of Hampton, Va.; two grandchildren, Cody Lehman of Crumpton, Md. and Chance Brilz of Rock Hall and a companion, Robert Brenholtz of Worton.

A Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. at Sacred Hearts Catholic Church, Chestertown, Md.

Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, near Chetertown.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital, 100 Brown St., Chestertown, MD 21620.

Roy Ernest Lynch, 85

LEWES - Roy Ernest Lynch of Lewes died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, in the VA Hospital, Elsmere. He was 85.

Mr. Lynch was born March 15, 1913, the son of the late Ernest Lynch and Annie M. Lynch.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

He worked for the Westinghouse Corp., retiring in the late 1970s.

Mr. Lynch was a member of VFW Post 345 of Essington, Pa.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Souder Lynch of Lewes; a stepson, Ronald W. Souder of Berlin, Md.; a stepdaughter, Jackie Burton of Lewes; a sister, Blanche Will of Lewes; three brothers, Lenard Lynch of Pennsylvania and Felix Lynch and Ernie Lynch both of Lewes; six step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Parsell Funeral Home & Crematorium Atkins-Lodge Chapel, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Joel Hitchcock, step-grandson-in-law will officiate.

Burial will be in White's Chapel Cemetery, Milton, Delaware.

Gwen L. Layton, 64

ELLENDALE - Gwen L. Layton of Ellendale died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, in Milford Memorial Hospital. She was 64.

Mrs. Layton was a unit clerk in the CCU Department for Milford Memorial Hospital for the past 25 years.

She enjoyed camping, company and friends.

She was president and chapter member of the Ellendale V.F.C. Sta. 75 Ladies Auxiliary and over the years has held many positions in the auxiliary.

Mrs. Layton was a member of the Ellendale U.M. Church.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cherly Goldsmith, a grandson, Jimmy Goldsmith, and two great-grandsons, Crawford D. Elliot III and Michael Alan Casterline Jr.

She is survived by her husband of 24 years, Norman Layton of Ellendale; two sons, Ray Wootten of Milford and Jeff Wootten of Greenwood; four daughters, Karen Hendreickson of Milford, Sharon Mitchell of Lincoln, Beverly Wootten of Milford and Anastasia Wootten of Ellendale; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three stepchildren, Lee Reed of Seaford, Peggy Clausen and Penny Rogers both of Seaford; a brother, James Lerch of Rock Hill, S.C., and two nieces and two nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Berry-Short Funeral Home, Milford, where friends may call two hours prior to the service.

Burial will be in Ellendale Cemetery, Ellendale.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Ellendale VFC Ladies Auxiliary or The Ellendale U.M. Church, Building Fund.

Samuel N. Matthews, 70

HARRINGTON - Samuel N. Matthews of Harrington died of heart failure Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, in his home. He was 70.

Mr. Matthews was born July 27, 1928, in Harrington, the son of the late Oscar B. Matthews Sr. and Edna May Matthews.

He was an owner, trainer and driver of harness horses, racing at Dover Downs, Harrington Race Track and Ocean Downs.

Mr. Matthews was a life member of Harrington Fire Company, member of Harrington Senior Center and the U.S. Trotting Association since 1961.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lelia A. Matthews in 1996; and a brother, Oscar B. Matthews Jr., in 1997.

He is survived by a daughter, JoAnne M. Butler of Harrington; a sister, Cora Fitzhugh of Harrington; a granddaughter, Jennifer J. Stubbs of Harrington and a great grandson, Byron Stubbs of Harrington.

Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at McKnatt Funeral Home, Harrington, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.
