Elizabeth May Kemp, 71

WILLOW GROVE, Pa. - Elizabeth May Kemp of Willow Grove died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, in her home. She was 71.

Mrs. Kemp was born in Oct. 13, 1927, in Wyoming, Del., the daughter of the late Thomas and Bertha Wright Rash.

She graduated from Caesar Rodney, class of 1946.

She retired in 1991 from the State of Delaware Insurance Commissioner's Office.

Mrs. Kemp was a charter member of the Camden-Wyoming Ladies of the Moose.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Charles Hampton Kemp of Willow Grove; two sons, Charles Michael Kemp of Washington, D.C., and Glen Ray Kemp of Willow Grove; a daughter, Phyllis Spiering of Willow Grove; two sisters, Pauline Watson of Dover, Del., and Susie Remus of Wyoming; four grandchildren, Michael Heartly of Smyrna, Del., Matthew Kemp of Dover, Sheri Spiering of Dover and Kelly Kemp of Smyrna; and a great-grandson, Dorian Murray of Dover.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Pippin Funeral Home, Wyoming, where friends may call after 11 a.m. The Rev. Milton Kemp will officiate.

Burial will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Sandtown.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Delaware Hospice, Lotus Plaza, 911 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.

Jannie Elizabeth Lewis Douglas, 82

CHURCH HILL, Md. - Jannie Elizabeth Lewis Douglas of Church Hill died after a long illness, Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, in Kent & Queen Anne's Hospital, Chestertown. She was 82.

Mrs. Douglas was born on April 7, 1916, in Queen Anne's County.

She was educated in Kent County.

Mrs. Douglas was a domestic worker in her early years.

She enjoyed endless hours sewing, cooking and caring for children.

Mrs. Douglas was married to the late Rigby Douglas Sr. in February 1936.

She was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Church Hill and a faithful member of the Helen Clark Missionary Society.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ellen Matthews.

She is survived by six daughters, Mildred Wright of Bear, Del., Anna Bordley and Rev. Janet Rochester, both of Church Hill, EllaMae Blake and Beatrice Sisco, both of Chestertown, Md. and Gladys Hynson of Worton, Md.; a son, Rigby Douglas Jr. of Fort Washington, Md.; a sister, Loretta Smith of Philadelphia; 20 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; four sons-in-law; a daughter-in-law; three brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law and a host of family and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Church Hill United Methodist Church, 508 Main St., Church Hill.

Friends may call 7-9 p.m. at Bethel A.M.E. Church, New & Agnes Street, Church Hill.

Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery, Church Hill.

Maria R. Evans, 70

MIDDLETOWN - Maria R. Evans of Middletown died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, in Christiana Hospital. She was 70.

Mrs. Evans was born in Wurzburg, Germany.

She worked as a seamstress out of her home in Middletown.

Mrs. Evans was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Odessa Fire Co., Delaware Sanger Bund, and the MOT Senior Center.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Edward C. Evans of Middletown, three sons, Michael E. Evans of Newark, Ronald E. Evans of Prior Lake, Minn., and Gary J. Evans of Clayton; two sisters, Gertrude Rohracker and Wilhemina Boser, both of Germany; and five grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, West Cochran Street, Middletown.

Friends may call 7-9 p.m. at Daniels & Hutchinson Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown.

Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Delaware Sanger Bund or Ladies Auxiliary of Odessa Fire Co.

Joan M. Swigert, 60

CENTREVILLE, Md. - Joan M. Swigert of Centreville died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, in Corsica Hills Genesis Eldercare Nursing Center, Centreville. She was 60.

Ms. Swigert was born on Aug. 15, 1938, in Baltimore, the daughter of the late John Wright and Mildred McGuire Malpass.

She was educated at Western High School in Baltimore and subsequently attended the Baltimore School of Cosmetology.

Ms. Swigert worked as a cosmetologist while residing in Baltimore, continuing her career after a move to Cape St. Claire, she also worked part-time at Busch's Chesapeake Inn. She began working in Annapolis for the Acme Supermarket, moving to Shippings Creek (now Stevensville) after transferring to the Acme Supermarket on Kent Island.

She is survived by a son, Charles G. Lansinger III of Centreville; two daughters, Debbie Mullins of Millington, Tenn., and Sandy Stowe of Chester; a sister, Nancy Hornig of Texas; five grandchildren; a devoted lifetime companion, Wesley Thompson of Chester; and a very dear friend, Linda Dicus of Queen Anne.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral, Chester.

Friends may call 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Baltimore.

Simon Arthur 'Art' Egge, 80

HARRINGTON - Simon Arthur 'Art' Egge of Harrington died after a long illness Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, in his home.

Mr. Egge was born Feb. 23, 1918, in Williams County, North Dakota, the son of the late Simon and Aslaug Larson Egge.

He was baptized into the Bethania Lutheran Church.

He worked on the family farm and attended schools in North Dakota and Humboldt Business College in Minneapolis, Minn.

Mr. Egge worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps for nearly three years doing soil, water, and forestry conservation.

He entered the U.S. Navy on Dec. 27, 1940, as a yeoman third class and was discharged on Sept. 26, 1945, as a chief petty officer. He saw action in the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans.

Mr. Egge worked for the headquarters of the Social Security Administration in Baltimore after the war, retiring in 1980.

He moved to Harrington in 1993, becoming a member of the Harrington Senior Center.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl Egge of Billings, Mont., Olav Egge of Williston, N.D., and Albert Egge of Blacktail, N.D. and a sister, Agnes Hoeft of Minneapolis.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Aileen Egge of Harrington, a daughter, Deborah Egge of Harrington, a son, David Egge and his wife, Diane Egge, of Baltimore, Md.; seven grandchildren, Alicia Vinson and her husband, Steve Vinson of Felton, Pamela Egge of Elkridge, Md., Laura Williams of Harrington, Kathleen Egge of Elkridge, Md., Tiffany Raines of Harrington, and David Egge Jr. of Baltimore, Md.; three great-grandchildren, Bridget and Shane Vinson of Felton, and one due in April, whom he was so looking forward to, and a sister, Evelyn Lierboe of Vero Beach, Fla.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Marriotsville, Maryland. The Rev. Paul Heins of the Bethany Evangelica Lutheran Church will officiate.

Friends may call 7-9 p.m. today at Melvin Funeral Home.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Lower Delaware Parkinson's Disease Support Group or Harrington Senior Center, 102 Fleming St., Harrington, DE 19952.

Dr. Edward S. Dennis, 85

DOVER - Dr. Edward S. Dennis of Dover died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, in his son Dr. Lee M. Dennis' home in Dover. He was 85.

Dr. Dennis was born on October 12, 1913, in Princess Anne, Md., the son of the late James I. Dennis and Gwendolyn B. Jones Dennis.

He received his formal education at Princess Anne Academy. He was a graduate of Lincoln University, Oxford, Pa., and Howard University Medical School, Washington, D.C., graduating in 1951. He completed his medical residency at Harlem Hospital in New York.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, fighting in the European Campaign. He was discharged as a captain in 1946.

Dr. Dennis was a family practitioner on staff at Kent General Hospital. He practiced on South Queen Street in Dover from 1952 to 1981, and served as Medical Director for Delaware State College for 29 years, Kent County's first Deputy Medical Examiner in the 1960s, and physician for the former John Morris County Jail, New and Water streets, Dover, for most of his career.

He was an avid outdoorsman, loving boating, hunting and fishing.

Dr. Dennis was a 33rd Degree Mason, a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, the County Republican Committee, Beta Eta Chapter of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity and the Scientific Honor Society of Beta Cappa Chi.

His wife of more than 50 years, Virginia Lee Monroe Dennis, died in April 1998.

He is survived by three sons, Dr. Lee M. Dennis and James I. Dennis, both of Dover, and Edward S. G. Dennis of Philadelphia; a daughter, Carlee Simmons of Silver Spring, Md.; four grandchildren, Jole D. Simmons, Edward Brookfield Dennis, Tiffany Dennis and Timothy Dennis; two daughters-in-law, Lois J. Dennis and Jannette L. Dennis; and a son-in-law, Earl Simmons.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, Queen and Fulton streets, Dover. The Rev. Rudolph Coleman will officiate.

Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday at Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover.

Iris Willin, 71

NEWARK - Iris Willin of Newark died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, in Manor Care Nursing Home. She was 71.

Mrs. Willin was born in Georgetown, the daughter of the late Joshua and Mildred Chatham.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Ronald Willin and Brent Willen.

She is survived by a daughter, Judi Mills Friedel of Burlingham, Va.; a sister, Jeanne Hearn of Delmar, Md.; a brother, Henry Chatham of Colora, Md.; a granddaughter, Sherri Rood of Burlingham, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. in Bridgeville Cemetery, Bridgeville. The Rev. Dr. John Randolph will officiate.

William E. Gardner, 85

SMYRNA - William E. Gardner of Smyrna died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, in Silver Lake Center, Dover. He was 85.

Mr. Gardner was born on July 23, 1913 near Townsend, the son of the late William A. and Erma Jones Gardner.

He worked for the Chrysler Corp. for several years, before retiring due to poor health.

Mr. Gardner or 'Ed' as he was known loved to garden, especially raising lima beans and fishing.

He was a member of Region 8 U.A.W. retirees' committee.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Mae Heverin Gardner of Smyrna; three sons, Melvin Gardner of Clayton, Wayne Gardner of Elmhurst, Illinois and David Gardner; three daughters, Doris Jean Hindt, Darlene Welzel and Sherri Kress all of Clayton; and 30 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 S. Main St., Smyrna, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Smyrna.

Mary Frisby Bradley, 89

SEAFORD - Mary Frisby Bradley of Seaford died of heart failure Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. She was 89.

Mrs. Bradley was a retired domestic worker.

She attended Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Bridgeville.

Mrs. Bradley was preceded in death by her husband, John Bradley.

She is survived by a son, Roland Wilson; a sister, Carrie Frisby of Bridgeville and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Bridgeville, where friends may call two hours prior to the service.

Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Middleford.

Dorothy E. Cox, 74

MILTON - Dorothy E. Cox of Milton died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 1999, in her home. She was 74.

Mrs. Cox had been a beautician for many years, working in Wilmington, opening her own salon, Dorthy's Beauty Salon in Milton, and retiring several years ago.

She was a former member of the Milton Historical Society, member of the American Hairdresser and Cosmetology Association and attended Goshen U.M. Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles 'Ed' Cox, in 1969.

She is survived by a son, Bayard T. Cox of Milton; a sister, Lydia Sammons of Georgetown; a brother, Willard Messick of Seaford; and four nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of Short Funeral Services, Federal Street, Milton, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milton.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Delaware Hospice, Georgetown.
